SENIORS: Week of 2-24

Short Week--no school Friday for faculty retreat, so plan for a test on Thursday. I have posted a test review at Studywiz.

Monday: we'll review "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" by going over "my" questions and comments---we will also hone in on some possible themes that Oates may have been suggesting

Tuesday: this day is your chance for asking specific questions about the material covered on the test. We will also discuss your responses to the article "Cut" by Bob Greene. You should have read this article and answered two questions on it back when we were studying "Granny Weatherall". Bring your answers to these question to class on Tuesday.

Wednesday: Introduction to One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest. I will be assigning pages for Cuckoo's Nest to read for next Monday.

Thursday: test

Sophs: Week of 2-18 (President's Holiday on Monday)

You should have read "The Minister's Black Veil." Be ready to discuss (and maybe write about) the meaning(s) of the black veil during your next class.

More work to come tomorrow, so check back.

Seniors: Week of 2-18 (President's Day Holiday on Monday)

For Tuesday's class please read and prepare 10 questions/comments for "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" It's attached at Studywiz, but it's also in your book.

To help with your understanding of the story, use the handout that I gave to you during class on Wednesday. If you left this at school, then use the attached file at Studywiz.

Also, please complete the assignment for "Cut" (article and writing prompt found on Studywiz). You may answer the questions in your notebook.

Sophs: Week of 2-10

This week?

All classes should have read the Famous People section of  The Greatest Generation for Monday's class. You should have your chapter summaries done, too.

Depending on your section color, you may be having a vocab quiz on Monday or Tuesday.

To finish this unit of literature, we will study the two American anti-Transcendentalists writers, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville.

For Wednesday's class, you should read the short story "The Minister's Black Veil" by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Prior to reading this story, you should read pp. 270-271 in your book. We will then watch a video of a Hawthorne short story called "Rappaccini's Daughter."

COMPLETE The Greatest Generation for next Tuesday, February 18. Of course, again write brief chapter summaries.

Next week we'll watch a video that discusses Herman Melville's Moby Dick.

Seniors: Week of 2-10

Buy Cuckoo's Nest ASAP

Please tell your parents that I will not be available for parent-teacher conferences because I have an away basketball game at Sussex Central that night. They can contact me at jfiorelli@stmarkshs.net to communicate.

for Monday's class: Come to class with 10 questions and/or comments on "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall" for class discussion. We will especially focus on the passages that use stream of consciousness to reveal Granny's character and concerns.

for Tuesday's class:(Mass schedule) finish "Granny" and peer evaluations of interior monologues

for Wednesday's class: peer evaluation of interior monologues

for Thursday's class: (short periods) read "Cut" by Bob Greene (it's on Studywiz). Read Bob Greene’s article entitled “Cut” and then answer these questions for class on Wednesday. Recommended length is 4-6 sentences.

1. Explain how Granny’s jilting by George is similar to the experiences of these men who were cut or belittled in youth sports. Cite specific lines from “Cut” and from “Granny.” Compare and contrast how Granny and the men reacted.

2. The last man who describes his “cut” experience is Dan Rather, now 82 years old. Briefly research Dan Rather and his accomplishments. With what accomplishments are you most impressed, ones that you might attribute to the “toughness” he developed from being cut.

for Friday's class: I will introduce a short story called "Where Are You Going? Where Have You Been?" that we will begin to read in class in preparation for our next test.
