Sophs #3 Journal--Writing a Conceit

POST BEFORE WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 29

I'm driving 65 mph on I-495, cars whizzing by me like I'm standing still. Two guys darting in and out of traffic like it's some video game chase--I can only imagine how fast they're going. I'm on the gas just to keep up with the flow, the left foot covering the pedal, just in case . . . momentarily reverting to what Mr. Shaw instructed back in my tenth grade driver's ed class.

Then comes the inevitable question from the backseat driver, who actually occupies the other seat in the front.

"Are you using cruise control?"

"No," I answer curtly.

"Why not? Doesn't your foot get tired?" the passenger harps.

I then begin my rant on the dangers of cruise control.

Clicking on the cruise control does prevent tired, cramping feet. However, it has its problems, too. For one, it lulls you into a false sense of security, and the feet usually get further and further away for both the gas AND the brake pedals. At that point, how much control do I really have?

Like my car, my life isn't often in cruise control. I hope I'm the one in charge as much as I can be (and without being a "control freak"). I realize I'm driving on a path that's been traveled on before, but as long as I'm the one making the decisions, I'll take that route, common as it might be.

How are you navigating through life?

Do you gas up, and then check the oil, wipers, air pressure, and radiator water level before a big trip?

Do you have the "pedal to the metal" or "both hands on the wheel at 10 before 2?"

Do you prefer I-95 or would you rather take the more scenic route?

Are you easily distracted by the billboards and other advertising signs outside of commercial business, or can you get from point A to point B without making a single stop?

Do you use your cell phone while driving, chatting and texting away instead of paying attention to the road?

Obviously, all of these driving situations can be applied metaphorically to situations in our lives.

For instance, the guy who gases up and checks out his car before a trip is the man who begins all his endeavors in life with preparation and a plan.

The "pedal to the metal" driver travels recklessly through life, hellbent on getting things done in a hurry without concern for safety for himself or anyone else.

Hopefully, you have the idea of what makes a CONCEIT, an elaborate (sometimes far-fetched) extended metaphor. Two things that are essentially unalike, like driving a car and living one's life, are compared. The "extended" part of the metaphor means that different parts of each item are compared, like the examples that I gave above comparing driving a car and living one's life.

So now it's your turn.

Think of an area in which you have some knowledge and expertise. Maybe it's a hobby (reading) or activity (sport, dance, fishing, etc.).

Think of a metaphor, and then extend it by breaking it down into parts.

For instance, reading a book is like developing a strong friendship.

How might choosing a book to read be like finding a friend? Examine its cover, its foreword, the reviews on the cover. How might this be similar to entering into a friendship? You can go on from here, and talk about opening the book the first time, feeling the stiffness of the book's bindings, maybe reading a few uneventful pages and then putting it down. How might this be like the beginning of a friendship, too?

Choose between these two assignments:

1. Tell me, in some elaborate, extended metaphor (conceit), what your LIFE is like. Let's avoid "roller coaster" or "box of chocolates."

2. Make any far-fetched, comparison (conceit) like the ones I read in class: going to a family reunion is like channel surfing cable television (this is posted for you on Studywiz); love is like white water rafting; my father is a toaster.

For some other examples, check the September 2009 archives and read the comments for "The Dangers of Cruise Control." Some are pretty original and thoughtful.

Life is like a desk.
You put out what stuff you want people to see on top of the desk and show them only that stuff.

You put in the bottom cabinet way in the back what you don’t want others to see.

You keep stuff that is important to you in the top cabinet on the first shelf.

You keep what you want to know in the cluttered middle filing cabinet on both sides

Sometimes you lose stuff from the desk and sometimes someone opens the bottom cabinet.

But no matter what, the desk will still be yours to do with as you please.

Life is like a roller coaster. Life is like a highway. Like is like a… Life can be like many things. Life to me is like a maze. At the very beginning of your life (and also in this case, the maze), you take your first step. You make not know exactly how to begin or you may not know what is around you. Tall hedges run next to you, keeping you where you are supposed to be, like the protection of a mother’s arms or the guidance of your father. When you start you’re with people you know for a long time, just like the long nine years of elementary school. You feel safe and comfortable. As you go along, you make different choices and turns, and you may separate from the others. High school is just like that, with different choices that you have to make every single day. But you have to follow your instincts and go your own way. You have to choose your college and hope that it’s the right one. With your choices, you may come across dead ends and have to try again. You may break up with someone or even lose a friend. Sometimes as you are turning around a corner, you might bump into someone. They could be helpful and you might follow them. You may be dependent on them to find the end. Or they could be completely lost and you may help them yourself. You will make friends and you will make foes. You don’t know where or what is at the end. You don’t know how close it is or how far away it is. You don’t know how old you will be or what you will be doing when God decides it is your time. When you’re close to the end, you’re relieved that it’s over. But something inside you doesn’t want to leave. It has been a fun journey, despite all the turns and twists of a maze, and all the ups of down of life. At the end, you meet up with the people you know and love. At the end, when you’re in heaven, everything will be okay. Life is troubling. Life is hard. Life is fun. Life is rewarding. Life is like a maze…

There are many ways people can describe their life. An example would be "life is like a box of chocolate, you never know what you're gonna get." or "life is like a rollercoaster." To me, life is something completely different. Life for me is about taking opportunities and making importanat decisions. I put life on a road, you can choose from many different paths like; whether you choose the upper path and your life and experience positvie opportunities or go down a lower and darker path to bad situtations. "Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending"- This quote was from Maria Robinson. She explains that once you're on that road, you can never go back and start all over, but you can start today and make a positive difference. Even if you are going down the wrong path, you can always change your life and find a shorcut to a better place. There is always hope.I would say that life is like a line. It can be very long and lasting or it could be very short and lurid, it all depends on the decisions you make in life. If you want your life to be long lasting and happy, make a positive choice. The points on the line represents the decision you made or an event that occured during your life and suprisingly, you could stop there or move on. Another good metaphore on life is: "life is a grammar lesson. You find the past, present, and future tense." This metaphor applies to my life very well. You made a mistake in your past, you learn from it now, and prevent the same mistake from happening again in the future. What you do in this life will affect you in the next life. God Judges you and determinds whether you go to heaven or hell mostly on the decisions you made in your past life. So be careful and wise on your chioces. little mistakes can lead up to bigger ones.

What is life like in my eyes, life is like a football game. You talk about your game plan on the first day, much like your life up through high school, thinking what you want to do with your life. The college years, the practices, you are putting into action what you have talked about doing. On the last day before the game you go through the motions of all your plays and assignments on the field, after this you feel prepared for game day. It’s finally here, you are all suited up for the big event, and pumped up and ready for your time to shine on the field. As you run on to the field, you are walking onto your first job site, into your first day at the office, or into your first operating room. First quarter, you make some mental errors but other than that, you’re in good shape. In the second quarter you make a huge mistake and it costs you the lead, now you’re playing catch - up. At half time there are a couple of changes made, and a great speech by your coach gets you fired up and ready to push through the obstacles ahead. During the second half you have all of your emotions under control and can make decisions without thinking, much like a seasoned veteran at your craft. At the end of the game, you have come out on top and dead tired, you left everything in you on the field. This is like retiring, you have worked hard all of your life, and now you get to live it out relaxing. And at the end of the day, when you put your head down to rest you can be happy with your life.

Life is like time. It doesn't wait for you, no matter how much you try or how important a certain event is for you. Time can often pass by very quicky, almost to the point where every thing is an undefined blur; somethings just pass so quickly that it can cause you to wonder where you were when it happened. Time can never go backwards and help change things that may have not happened in the first place due to carelessness or some other foolish mistakes that could have easily had a bearing on a relationship or someother event or person. Time is constant, just like they way you wake up every day and experience sunrises and sunsets. Time can never go away like things in life that people try to hide, such as personal problems and uncertainties that people want to deny out of fear. Time is similar to life be cause it plays such an important part in life its self.

“Life is a beach, I’m just playin’ in the sand,” sung by Lil Wayne. My life has many different aspects and it all comes together at the beach. When you first walk on the beach you face the sand. You’re wobbling back and forth with your bag full of beach gear looking for the perfect spot. The travel through the sand for me represents keeping my grades up. There is always that smooth patch when you do not have to work hard, but then the next week five tests are thrown at you. It is always easier to ignore the work, but you have to take the tasks and work through them until you reach where you want to be. Once you have found the ideal location, then you must set up. The amount you have to set up defiantly shows how much of your parents trust you have with the older you get. This summer I had to set up all the beach chairs and the cooler, but when I was younger I would just have to give my cover up to my mom and then I could play. The next and most important step is applying your oil to get your tan on. This shows how a teenage girl’s image is such a big aspect in her life. You always want to look tan, skinny, and pretty. After tanning for some time you get hot, so you go down to the ocean. The decision to just go in for a cooling dip or actually go in and enjoy the waves determines whether you’re too mature for your own good or if you can still enjoy the gifts god gave us without feeling like a little kid. The last depressing step of your day on the beach is packing up and going home. There are many paths in life that are available to you, but you have to keep your eye on the prize. This is just like heading back up the beach trail, you always want to go back and say bye to the people you met that day or take one last dip, but you just have to keep going because there will always be another long day on the beach.

Life is like riding a bicycle. You do not fall off unless you stop peddling. You check your bike before you ride it to see if the tires are low on air, the chain needs greased, and the brakes are working correctly. If there are no problems here, take your life in whatever direction you like. You can choose the path you want to adventure out on, whether it is a dirt trail, the side of the road or even a sidewalk. Likewise, throughout life you choose the direction you want to go in life. When life is tough at time you may choose to shift to a lower gear, although when life is going well you may want to shift into a higher gear. You may take on different terrains throughout your ride, whether its rocks, mud, or steep hills. These different terrains are good tests to see if you can adjust to different situations in life. Throughout your ride it is possible to come across different weather patterns that may affect your safety riding. In life, God may throw obstacles at you that you just have to figure out how to overcome. At the end of your ride you feel, life is like a bicycle.

The way I see it, life is like a hockey game. Your childhood is like training camp and preseason. You are training during your childhood to try and be a perfect adult. During this preseason and training camp you see who will most likely be successful, who will be average, and who will be the weakest links. Then you have the regular season and playoffs which are like adulthood. This is the hardest time in your life and the hardest time in hockey. During this time, people will try and bruise you or beat you down just like if you were competing for a job or your space on the highway. Then there is the time leading up to the playoffs. The teams that gave it their all will move on, while others will fall off, kind of like peoples social statuses in the real world. Then finally, you have the period of time where you are old and wrinkly in retirement. This is like the time after the Stanley Cup. If you were the winner, you will look back and remember all the great times in your life and realized how hard you worked. But if you were the team who got beaten in the playoffs or just fell short in the Stanley Cup, then you will look back and have some regrets but of course you will still feel successful in your own peace of mind.

To me, life is like a fast-paced football game. Most days, you start off in the neutral zone, or the 50 yard line. Your day can go any which way and you have to decide whether you want to happy and positive, or give up and be grumpy. So you start off with the ball and the field is clear. But then, something goes wrong. The next thing you know, the other team gets an interception and it’s their ball now. You feel like you want to give up and just go back to bed. That is when the other team gets to the 20 yard line, gets their first down, and is so close to getting the first touchdown of the game. So you decide to give up, and let them get a touchdown. When this happens, you let the negative rule your day and that never ends up well. But only good part about the other team getting a touchdown is that now you get the ball. This is when you decide to turn your day around. You stop dwelling on the negative and focus on the positive, and you start trying. And then, you get a touchdown! Your hard work pays off and you have a glorious spot at the top. If you keep pushing yourself throughout your entire day, amazing things can happen. Including more touchdowns, and eventually winning the game. In life, you have ups and downs. But like football, you can’t give up when one thing goes wrong. You have to push through the odds and ignore other people’s expectations of you and never give up.

Some people may consider an individual's life like a box of tissues. Everything is boxed up into one package of paper that wipes away unwanted "things".

Someone may use you for their own benefit when they sneeze or have a cold. This can be compared to when someone is hurt and upset and you help them by wiping away what's bothering them.

You get them cleaned up and ready to face the world with a fresh start.

As a Christian, our mission in life is to help others and I believe this metaphor fits this idea perfectly. If we all use our abilities and talents to help others then our world be a clean and content place.

My life is like an art studio. Throughout life comes the many diverse works of art found in this room. When stopping to look at each work, the story behind it begins to unfold. First are the vague sketches of doubt and timidity. These are the mysteries that cause us to think twice before taking that step into the unknown. Next are the dark, gloomy drawings influenced by rage, sorrow, and melancholy. The pains of life that must be endured for the artists to grow, and for the art to improve. By learning from mistakes and evolving, come brightly colored, bubbly paintings of cheer and contentment. The times in our lives that that bring joy with the splashy color scheme. And then, the sculptures of passion. Although it may take time, patience and hard work, like a smile from across the room, or laughing at someone’s joke; this plain block of stone will be molded into a symbol of beauty, devotion and love. Here in this studio are the endless possibilities of art, and the journeys we take to achieving happiness.

My life can be compared to baking. When I first look at a recipe, I can be intimidated by how complex it is. This can compare to trying something new. You don’t know how good you might be at it, or how your effort s might turn out. It’s a fear of the unknown. Sometimes you just have to take a risk and try your hardest no matter how scared you are of what the outcome might be. After looking at the recipe, you have to add the different ingredients. When you first pour them into the bowl, they don’t blend well. They are separated until you use the blender to mix them. This can relate to making friends which is very important in my life. When I first met people freshmen year, we were all shy and quite. We kept to ourselves and didn’t really talk to other people. We were the unmixed ingredients. After a few weeks of school, we all became a lot closer and soon we were all best friends. We became the mixed ingredients. At the end of baking, all of your hard work, frustration, and energy have turned out to be something delicious if you followed the recipe correctly. In life, if you follow the right path everything will turn out right in the end. All of your frustrations will be forgotten and you will only remember the good outcome.

"It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right. I hope you had the time of your life"- Green Day. To me, life is different types of music. Sometimes life can be sluggish; it is a slow moving song. It can seem to drag on forever, never tuning higher or lower or never changing beats. Life can seem so boring that nothing differs in your tedious, everyday routines. On the other hand, life can be a cheery song, such as "Joy Ride" by the Killers. When you are feeling happy, you just want to sing as loud as you can. Life's optimistic lyrics and upbeat tune can keep you smiling like the days where nothing can put you down. When love's wondrous tunes hit you at some point in your life, you will feel its bubbly lyrics playing through your mind. Life is a love song at these times, such as "Hey There Delilah" by the Plain White Tees. On the days where you are just downright mad, life is screamo or heavy metal music. You have just gotten in a huge fight with your friend and no one seems to listen to you. Your life is screaming harsh lyrics at you, and the intense strings of the guitar continue to ring in your ears. But life is also be the sad and dreary tunes of a depressing song. There are times in your life where everything seems hopeless, and you feel alone in the world. The gloomy tune continually plays through your head. Music can channel all types of feelings and emotions, which is why it will always be a part of my life.

Life is like a sports season. The practice and effort you put into succeeding in life is the same effort you put into beating your opponents. Sometimes your opponent is easier to beat, they are like the little successes in life. But sometimes in your schedule you have a tough opponent coming up. You get your team all pumped up for the game and you all work very hard to get better in practice. This could be like studying for tests. So when the big game starts you give your very best effort and your team wins. Or you go in to take the test and get an A on it. But sometimes in life we all have times where we do not succeed, or we do not beat that team that we worked so hard to win against. Even though it hurts to lose, it shows that we are going to have to work harder to achieve what we want. So, in practice you work a little harder and push a little more to show you are not going to give up without a fight. The next time you play them, you show them you are better then you were and win the game and feel so much more accomplished with how far you have come to achieve your goal. So, to me, life is like a sports season. We are going to have our triumphs and our loses, but what you do with the loss is what is most important.

Life is like fishing.
Life is like fishing because when your fishing you have to sit there and wait for fish to come and eat your bait and sometimes fish just dont come. In life you have to be patient and wait for certain things to come just like in fishing you cant just magically make fish appear you have to wait for the fish to come to you. Sometimes no matter what you do fish wont bite, you can a million differnt kinds of bait but the fish won't bite. This is like life because sometimes in life it is really boring and their is nothing to do but other times you are having so much fun you can't focus on other things like responsibilities. Sometimes when your fishing you get bites constantly and there are so many fish you can't fishing no matter how long you have been there. You coulnd't imagine life any better because your caught in the moment and your having so much fun. This is like life because sometimes your having so much fun at parties and with friends that you dont spend enough time on things like homework and school. But then other times during fishing there are no fish and you are totally bored and there is nothing to do. This is like life to when there are no parties to go to and no friends to hang out with and your bored. To me life resembles fishing in all these ways because I know sometimes I am completely bored and there are no people to hang out with. But then other times I am having so much fun I forget to do things like my homework. I believe that fishing is a great metaphor for life because of all these reasons.

I feel like life is like Cross Country. I have to train many days to finally be prepared for my ultimate goal and become successful. For most people XC doesn’t seem like a real sport. I thought this once myself before I actually joined. When I joined I found out that this is more than just running, it is a very competitive, fast paced, and shocking sport. In life we go to school to get an education and then find a career and become successful. In the beginning we first put on our learning shoes and begin our run for knowledge. As we progress and add on more and more miles for knowledge we learn everything we need to know. In XC we first start out slow and run as far as we can go and for me that first day I could not go very far. But as I ran more each day I could run further and further as this season progresses. Back to our knowledge run we are now in high school and the course has changed in front of us. There are so many new paths we can run on that take us to many different places. We can run on the mathematics path, the path of science, the historical path, or the writing path. When I am running in one of our meets the course has many twists and turns and there are many obstacles that I need to overcome. In some meets there is a huge hill or there is a rocky root filled path I have to traverse. In life I encounter so many obstacles such as: school, social life, peer pressure, taxes, and my career. I train hard all my life to become what I dream of whatever I may want to be when I grow up. As long as I train hard and well I will come down the final stretch giving it all I got knowing I have worked hard to get this far and in the end it is work it.

Life is like an amusement park. There are many different things to do and many different people to do them with. There are the great rides and then there are the bad ones. At an amusement park, it’s wild and fast paced. Everyone is moving around and trying to be the first in line to every ride. That is how it is in life, everyone is constantly doing something and it just seems like it to me that everyone should just slow down. The rides of an amusement park are the special moments we share with others, good or bad moments. Some rides/moments might be long or they might be quick. We need to hold on to those moments and be able to deal with them. At an amusement park there are always those kinds of people who take shortcuts in lines to get closer to the front. Those kinds of people are just skipping over and taking the shortcuts in life too. The people in our lives who make it great are the cotton candy you eat at an amusement park, they’re a great big of sweetness. The people who make our lives bad are the gum you step on at an amusement park that you just can’t get off, they show up and refuse to leave while getting you angry at the same time. But an amusement park can be fun and it is full of fun things you can do, you just have to know how to deal with the gum and be sweet like cotton candy. Life is like an amusement park.

My life is like a well-played video game. When my life began I started as a novice player. At each new level that I reach it is a challenge from the start. As an infant, I was learning the controls. Once the controls were “figured out” I was ready to start level one. To advance to each new level, I have to master the challenges in the previous one. There are obstacles that I have to overcome “around every corner”. Some of these obstacles can be beat easily, but once you think the tough part is over, you come to the “boss” of the level. These “bosses” can be almost anything. They can be small things such as taking tests, or big things such as graduating college. Sometimes, the game may not play out the way I want it to, but I have to follow the “rules”. There are many secrets that I can discover in life, just like on the games that I play. Every end is a beginning. Just as there is always more for me to learn and discover, the video game of life never ends. And just like video games, the sequel can be much better, yet often harder.

Life is like solving a jig saw puzzle. All of your pieces are the different people in your life. Some pieces you can automatically put together. Sometimes you can easily find a group. Just as your different friend groups and families. Some pieces you think should fit together just dont. Maybe this could be a friend, boyfriend, or situation when you think you are doing the right think but are not. You always look for the edges first for the easiest parts to get started, such as your earlier years. Childhood when everything was so much simpler is an example. Then you start to move to the middle, when it becomes a little more tricky and you cant find anything that fits. In life, when you get older and more experienced, you cant find your way, and everything seems like nothing is going to work out. You may even walk away from the puzzle or situation for a couple of hours or even a couple of days. Then there are always the times where you loose a piece and you cant find it anywhere and cant complete the puzzle and you feel defeated after how hard you worked at it. Like when you worked so hard at something such as a project, or relationship and you loose it. You can try to fit pieces that look the same together but they just dont fit. Sometimes you think some choices are right for you but you will learn some things cant always go the way as planned.. Then, your almost done and you feel good. Things seem to be working out. Finally, you have those last 2 pieces in your hand. And in the end, when you put the last piece in, you feel accomplished and good. You could reach your goals, get a job, go or graduate from college. However, there is some sort of sadness once your goal is completed. You have nothing to obsess over, work for. This is when you pick up a new puzzle, find a new dream. Sometimes you cant finish the puzzle. You give up and feel like a loser maybe even defeated. Another alternative is the puzzle goes on for months, you are not willing to give up no matter how long the puzzle or your dreams take. Some of us will never give up.

For me, life is like a game of chess. Everyone could be one of the 32 pieces and every one of those 32 pieces plays an important role. Some people are the queens or kings. Some the rooks or the bishops or maybe even the knights. Some people could also be the pawns. The pieces in chess all have their importance, just like people in real life have their importance.
I also think life is like a game of chess because in life, I feel, you have to be strategic. You have to plan ahead sometimes to be successful and the same holds true for chess. Every move you make has a consequence or reaction. Some of those reactions will be bad and some will be good. With enough thought, the reaction to your action will be a good one.
The last example of why life is like a chess game is that you have to trust the people around you to make good decisions as well. I think you have to be able to relay on people around you more than some people realize. In chess, the pieces aren't alone the whole time and they relay on the pieces around them to stick around for as long as possible.

Life is like a box of crayons.
When you are about to color a picture the first thing you must do is open the box of crayons. What you don’t know about the box, is that when you open it there is that overwhelming stressful first moment, when you are staring at an extremely ridiculous amount of crayons. What is one to do with all those choices? For starters you have the very bright bold crayon that stands out and your eye is immediately mesmerized. Just as you are about to use that crayon, you second guess your judgment you realize that that color would look absolutely horrible in the picture. So you put it back in the box where once again you must choose. So you try a less bold crayon that looks like it could work, then you make the first line with that crayon and you have an unpleasant surprise. The color on the paper looks nothing like the color of the crayon. You cannot believe you fell for that old trick that you have been warned about so many times, “looks can be deceiving”. So disappointed you decide to go back to the box for round three, but this time you are nobody’s fool. Instead of looking at color you decide to read the names of the crayon, positive that you will find the right one this time. You read them off "brussel sproutlet, tiny teapot tan, and baby fir green”. It takes you about two seconds to realize the names are either so preposterous or so irrelevant to the actual color of the crayon that you cannot possibly find the right crayon with this method. When you are just about to crumble up your picture and forget about the whole thing, you see a dull colored crayon in the very corner of the box. You start to use it and the color is perfect. Although you went through all that trouble to make one decision about one crayon that one crayon completed your whole picture and it is a true work of art.

For me life is like the ticking clock in the movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The movie starts out showing how the clock was made and why the clock maker made it. The clockmaker was a blind man who had a loving wife and son. When his son decided to join the Army, he promised his dad that he would come home. A few months later, the clockmaker got a letter saying that his son had died. The son came home, but not in the way anyone had hoped. So, the father was inspired to make a clock for the new train station. Everyone, including the President, came to see the unveiling of the new clock. When the clock maker revealed it, everyone saw that the clock was ticking backwards. When asked why the man made it that way, the clock maker said that maybe it would help turn back time. He went on to theorize that by turning back time, maybe all the dead soldiers would return therefore, someday, his son might come home again. The backwards-ticking clock is related to my life because I cannot turn back time or re-do events over again. I have to think about every move and action I make because it can impact the rest of my life. For example, choosing what metaphor to pick for the blog. If I had choose a simple topic that most others had picked, then maybe my grade would not be as good as it would be if I had picked a topic like this one. Another way the ticking clock is related to my life is that time does not stop. At the very end of the movie it shows the old backwards clock in a storage room and it just keeps on ticking. This shows that we cannot pause time. Sometimes when I am really stressed out and feel like life won’t slow down, I want to stop time. Of course, this does not happen. Life moves on and time moves on. Another way the clock represents life is when we experience the death of a close person in our lives. We feel like we can never get over this horrible tragedy. We move through stages of grieving, just like a clock moves through stages of the day. Even after we die, the clock will keep on ticking. Life does not stop we stay alive in the memories of out friends and family. These are the reasons why life is like the ticking clock in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, life never stops to take a break and neither does the ticking clock.

My family is like a well-oiled mini van. Why a mini van? To me, when i see a mini van, I think of a happy family going on a drive. My mom is the engine. She keeps the family running through anything. Like the engine keeps a van running, my mom keeps us running through the good and the bad. My dad acts as a seat belt. He disciplines us when we’re in trouble. A seat belt is there to keep you in place. My dad will keep us in place like a seat belt when we’re out of line. My sister Mia is the radio ‘cause of her loud mouth. She’s loud all the time, even when it’s not the right place and time to be loud. D.N. my older sister is like the mirrors. To put it simply, what you see is what you get with her. My youngest sister, Tina is the GPS system. I believe she is the smartest person out of the whole family. And me, I’m the AC. I keep everybody cool with jokes and laughters. When things get too serious, I try to ease the situation. On the other hand, I can be a hot head and thats because of my temper. All in all, if one part is missing from my family van, we can’t run. We complete each other. Maybe my family isn’t a well-oiled mini van, but we are enjoying the ride.

People say life is like a road, and life is like a box of chocolates. To me, life is like a poker game. You never really know what kind of hand you will have, just like in life you never know what opportunities or disasters will present themselves. You can choose to fold, or go all in, just like in life when you have to choose to either take a risk or wait for the next one. At first you may not know what your doing and you might get lost, but as time goes on you get better and better. You keep getting new hands and you always have the option to bet or fold, to get in, or get out. Life is like a poker game, and the dealer is chance. He gives you the hand you can choose to play. If you do not take risks, you cannot win, and if you take too many risks, chances are you will lose. In life, to succeed you must be ready to risk certain things and be ready to change things. The trick to both poker and life is to know what risks to take, and when to fold.

If I could compare my life to something, I would say that my life is like a closet. In my closet, there are many different types of clothing. There are dress clothes, uniforms, play clothes, sweatpants, some of my favorite outfits, and clothes that I have never worn before and never will wear. This represents the different people in my life such as my friends, family, enemies, and teammates. My favorite outfits that represent what I am comfortable in, just like my best friends who I like hanging out with. The clothes I have never worn are clothes that I have tried on but never liked or never found an occasion to wear. These symbolize people I thought I would have a relationship with but never materialized. My closet also has a variety of items such as bags, shoes, and boxes. These are not necessities, but make my life interesting and more detailed. These are the different types of people that I will encounter in my life, such as outgoing, self-centered, cocky, and even annoying.
My closet is usually neat and organized. Just like my closet, my life is usually well planned and carefully scheduled. However, sometimes my closet gets very cluttered, like my life. That is when I could search all day and not find what I am looking for. When my closet becomes stuffed and overflowing, that is when I take the time to clean it out. When my life becomes too busy and I am over committed, I stop to realize what is important and get rid of the unnecessary commitments and re-evaluate my schedule. I also put things in my closet that I don't want other people to see. I keep my closet door open when someone comes in my room that I am really close to, because they know a lot about me. When someone that I am not too familiar with comes in, I shut my door, because I don’t want them to know my whole life story. In life, I am cautious not too open up too quickly.
It doesn't matter if the door is open or closed, the contents in my closet remain the same. Just like my closet, whether I am totally open, partially closed, or tightly closed, doesn't change the real person that I am inside.

Many Americans are familiar with the saying from Forest Gump, “life is like a box of chocolates.” Although I have never completed watching the well-known movie, I have heard the saying many times. In my mind, Life is like a movie. Each movie has a director to direct the scene, cast, and to get ideas rolling. You are the director of your own life and star in your own personal film. As the director of your life, you control the setting and the scenes by where you travel and what you accomplish throughout each day. Movies also need cast members to tell the story. Your relatives and friends represent the supporting roles in your production. Extras are hired in famous films to make the scene more natural and organic. Bystanders and strangers who are scattered throughout your life signify the extras in your movie. You as the director are also an extra in many other “personal movies”, for an example if you attend a football game for the “first scene” all of the fans in the stadium are essential to the game or in this case, a scene. Motion pictures also have a beginning, middle and an end, similar to life. Climax and resolution are key elements to a successful movie. Life has many ups and downs, which could be considered the climax or resolution of a movie. In addition, Viewers may watch the same movie multiple times and perceive it in a different way each time they watch it. Like life, you may do the same thing consistently, for example, attending school or church, and learn different lessons. Most importantly, there are different types of movies such as thriller, drama, comedy and romantic comedy, which symbolize the different moods and phases you go through in your life. Favored movies always have sequels to follow. In your movie, the sequels will tell the story of different chapters in your life.

People are like purses. When you go to buy a purse from the store, it is usally the appearance that draws you to the bag. That’s like people. We often look at people like that. Even if we are just walking down the street, we look at peoples appearances and think one thing, when really they are probably like something else. The things you put inside the purse can be compared to what the people are really like. Each item expresses the person differently. The problem though, is that other people don’t see what in the purse from the outside. This symbolizes how you need to get to know people to see what’s inside instead of judging them by their looks. Another aspect is the design outside of the purse. The design almost tells you a little about the purse. This is almost similar to the clothes we wear or the way we do our hair and present ourselves to others. Overall appearance can only hint to the kind of person we are though. You need to dig inside that purse, or get to know the person, to see what’s really inside.

There are many different things people can describe their life as. I would have to describe life as a flower. A flower starts out as a small seedling, as do children. Flowers need sunlight and water to grow. In life, your parents, friends, and positive people are the nourishment you need to grow. Flowers are delicate and can die very quicky. Life is like this too, in which you need to take care of yourself and be safe. Once they are done growing and bloom, flowers are so beautiful and nice to look at. If you work hard in life and have positive influences, you can succeed just like a flower does. If you have faith in yourself, you can blossom into a beautiful flower.

Life can be like many things, but to me life is like a close soccer game. You start life off as a baby or a toddler, which is like warming up. You do a few drills and go over the gameplan to get yourself ready for what is to come, just like kindergarten or elementary school. Then the game starts, the first ten minutes of the game is like the sixth grade. In the sixth grade, you have just come up from the elementary school and you don't know what it is going to be like, so you start off by getting a feel for it. Just like how in soccer you move the ball around trying to get to know if the other team is going to come at you hard or defend like crazy. Then you get towards the middle of the game, which can be like high school. In the middle of the game you try a little harder to get a goal so you can take the lead. In high school you try harder than you would have in the years before so you can get into a great college and get a great education. Then you get down to the final half of the game. In the second half everyone is trying as hard as they can to get that goal to win the game or mess with the other team and keep the ball so they can't win the game. This can be applied somewhat to college. This can be applied to college because most everyone is trying to make the best of it and have fun, but at the same time get good grades and get a masters or a PHD or an MD so they can succeed in life. And finally it comes down to the final few minutes, where everyone is either happy that they know they succeeded or panicking to get that goal to go into overtime. This can be applied to the final few months of college where everyone is either happy that they know they succeeded and can head on to med school or whatever they want to do, or panicking because they know they need those final few grades to be good to pass and get their masters or bachelors degree. This is what life means most to me.

My life is like shopping. Sometimes in life or at your favorite store you have a good experince (day) or a bad experinece. A good day of shopping would be getting your favorite pair of jeans on sale at your favorite store. In real life that would be compared to as getting a one hundred percent on the hardest test you have ever taken plus getting the extra credit right. On a bad day of shopping you would most likely have no money on your giftcard (happens to me all the time) or the store just ran out of the new pair of shoes you had been saving up for. In real life having a bad day would include, not getting your locker open or remembering as you walked into classs that day that you had two assingments due and you hadn't done them. Just like shopping, life is a hit or miss situation.

Life is like a beach. To me I think life is like a beach because there is an endless opportunity of things to do. When you first get to the beach, you have to pick the perfect spot in the sand to spend your day. You have to pick a spot big enough for all your belongings, toys for your little siblings, and of course the cooler with all the drinks and snacks. The spot has to be perfectly smooth and just right. This relates to life by making tough decisions such as whether or not to do your homework or study for a test. Although you may not feel like doing it, in the end the right decision is to get it done. Once you find your spot on the beach the next step is to apply sunscreen. If you don’t apply any sunscreen, you will get burnt and be complaining for the next two days! Just as if your parents ask you to do something around the house and you don’t listen, there will always be bad consequences and you will be wondering why they wont let you go out that weekend. After you apply all your sunscreen you are free to go in the ocean. When you get down to the water you have the decision to jump right in or get used to it first. This is just like meeting new friends. Some people are very outgoing and will go up to someone they never met before and right then and there they will be best friends. That is not always the case for everyone though, other people have a shyer personality and they have to warm up to someone before their true self comes out.

Life is like learning to ride a bike. You start off with the training wheels and then as you grow and become more confident you eventually will take them off. The same is true for life. You start off as a baby in the care of your parents and as you become older each year you become more independent of them, just like the training wheels. Learning how to stop with the brake is the next step. When your riding a bike you depend on the brake to do its job and stop when you need it to. In life you need that brake to help you from making mistakes and stops you from getting hurt. Next, you learn how to steer the bike. The handlebars are one of the most important parts of the bike. The handlebars in life help you keep holding on especially when times in your life are getting bad and you need something to grab hold of and hold on. Learning to steer your life gives you the power to make your own decisions and be your own person with your own morals and standards. Learning how to turn around helps you for not going to far. In life being able to turn around gives you the oppurtunity to make things better and to fix your mistakes. Now that you have taken off your training wheels, learned to use the brake, and can steer and turn the bike around you are ready to face the path. on that path you can face downward and upward hills, bridges and rocky paths. Going up the hill in life is like facing your fears and once you reach the top you have overcome those fears and are no longer afraid, the wind is pushing you up the hill and helping you get to where your going. Going down the hill is like going through tough times in your life, the wind is pushing against you and seems it is doing everything it can to slow you down. The bridge in your life is like crossing over an obstacle that you never thought you could overcome it. The rocky road in life is the rough patch in your life where you don't want to go through it instead just go a different way. However, instead of pushing away and running from your problems you go through them and work your way through them, becoming a your own person and being able to take control of your own life.

There are many things that can be compared to each other in our world, but two things that come to my mind are people and food. Would you ever think to compare those that are living and breathing to something you eat? People and food are both essentials to our lives, without food we would die of starvation, and without people we would most likely be lonely and depressed. My favorite type of food is seafood, and my least favorite type of food is fruit. There are some people that I meet in my life, that are going to be seafood and then there are some that are going to be fruit. The first thing we tend to do when meeting new people is look at the outside of them and their appearance, we do this exact same thing with the foods we eat before we try them. If I were to go to the grocery store and see something that looks completely disgusting, I most likely won’t buy it, the same is if I were at a new school and I saw a person with a mean look on there face I probably would avoid being their friend. There are other types of foods that just by their look I would love to try, this is the same with people. Some foods are gross and unappealing, others look delicious and we must try them, but there will always be those foods that may looks gross and they taste amazing. We shouldn’t judge people the same way we judge foods, or we will never know how the person really is until we try them.

Life is like a light bulb.
Light bulbs always shine their brightest for as long as they "live" until "die". Like people, they always try their hardest until they die.

They sometimes stop working breifly if theres a shortage in the electricity and then work again. People sometimes are delayed with a problem but always over come the situation.

If they break, they are recycled and made into a better, new light bulb. When people make mistakes, they learn from them and become a better, new person.

Light bulbs need a little "twist" to get them going. People sometimes need a gentle push in the right direction in life, just like light bulbs need a twist to get going.

Lastly, when a light bulb "dies" you have to change it. In life when you can not do something, you have to change what you are doing and try something else.

Life is like building a sandcastle on the beach. When you pick the perfect spot and the sand has a good consistency to build, tunnel, and create, life is going well. Sometimes you start and you have an exact plan of the castle you’re going to create. Just how sometimes in life you think you know exactly where you’re going. Then someone else helps you build the castle and has a different perspective or new idea, and your original plan changes. This can be compared to your friends and family in life influencing and helping you. There’s a saying “when it rains it pours” or when one bad thing happens it seems as if a lot of bad things happen. Like those days where you just can’t win. In building a sandcastle it literally pours if waves crash on your hard work. There’s always that one big wave that comes out of nowhere just as there are surprises in everyday life that keep you on your toes. Then there are good days, when you get lucky. That’s like finding the perfect sea shell to complete your castle, or placing the castle in the perfect spot so it doesn’t get ruined by the tide. I think life can be compared to the simplest things because it’s the simple things in life that matter.

Life is like your closet. It's your go to place when you need something new, such as a cute outfit. But if you look deeper you find things that you forgot you had, Such as an old shirt or old shoes. Though these things are old, they go perfectly with your cute new outfit and you remember how happy this objects used to make you. Life is like a closet because sometimes you forget about things that once used to make you happy. We grow up and become new people and in doing so loose old friends, our favorite teddy bears or an old shirt or shoes. But even though we reestablish ourselves doesn't mean we have to leave the things we love behind.

Making a new friend is like buying a pair of shoes. When you go to the store, you always become interested in the shoe that looks the “coolest” and that will get people to notice you. You try on the awesome shoes, only to find that they just don't fit like you wanted them to. You still don't want to let them go, even though they're much too small. Eventually you force yourself to look for a new, more fitting pair. You end up going through numerous pairs, some that fit but aren't your “style,” and vice versa. Eventually you find a modest pair that you feel actually represents the real person that you are. They end up being just your size and you wear them for many, many years, perhaps even your whole life. When you try to find a new friend, like any person would, you are always first attracted to the people who you think are cool and popular. Sometimes you can get lucky and the first person you find may in fact be your new best friend. Often times though, you realize after a few days that the person who you thought you were friends with, just isn't what you were looking for. Perhaps they're just too obnoxious or they don't share the same values. It takes time to find that one friend that likes the same things as you and fits perfectly in your life.

Finding the right high school is like going to a shoe store. When you first enter the shoe store, you look for the perfect style for you. This is like finding what kind of style school you would like to attend. There are many different kinds of schools such as private, public, art, religiously affiliated, tech, and science schools. After you find the pair you like, you need to find your size. The school that you are looking for may be big or small. When the clerk brings out the shoebox, it’s time to put them on. Trying shoes on, can feel like an endless event. Like trying on shoes, you have to try out many schools by visiting them. While you have the shoes on your feet, you need to test them out and walk around. This could be like taking an entrance exam into the school of your choice. Next, you need to make sure you feel comfortable in them because there’s nothing worse then being uncomfortable; this could be equated with how comfortable you feel at your school. Once you’ve made your final pick, it’s time to go to the cash register. You need to make sure that the price is right. The school you go to depends on the price of tuition. No one wants to pay a ridiculous amount for his or her child to go to high school. You have to try many options before you find the perfect fit.

Life is like a sailboat.
Some of us built sturdy, but all of us have some soft spot. We all have small waves or problems that come our way that we have to get through. And sometimes we have storms and really hard times in our life. But always we have a wind, which takes us wherever life decides to take us, sometimes the wind is stronger than others but its almost always there. We have an inside which holds all of our prized possessions or parts of us that we don't want to get wet or rained on. And sometimes we go inside to be secluded from the outer world. But despite the bad things it comes with great things. It comes with a journey but to be enjoyed. We all have a destination but we should all enjoy the ride we can endure on our journey there.

Life is like riding a bicycle. Sometime we can ride on smooth ground, steadily and with ease. However, sometimes we ride along bumpy roads and the riding becomes tougher. Sometimes we need to slow down our bikes, when we are lost or confused and sometimes we speed them up. Whether its to try and find new places or just to get by the old ones. The way I see it, we are all riding our bicycles...and all in a different gear. Some in the tenth gear, coasting through life without even a glance to our side. While others are still just in gear one, taking time, making sure we don't miss a single thing. I can also think of the gears on my bike as gears to which a person can reach in their life. On a ten gear bike, most of us will never even get past the fifth gear. But if you pedal hard enough we can slowly reach higher and higher gears. There is one more point I can make while trying to explain life as a bicycle, you will never fall off unless you plan to stop peddling.

Life is like skateboarding, you may fall down, you may get hurt but with every fall and every bruise you learn and get better. You have to persevere and work your hardest if you want to succeed. You sometimes break your board but you get a new one, your wheels become worn down and so do your trucks. Same with obstacles in your life, they may get in the way but you have to deal with them and move past them and if you don’t you will struggle. Skateboarding has its highs and lows, much like life does and you have your times when life is great and everything is going good for you, and you have your times when it seems like everything goes bad and that things are not working out right. But what really matters is how you come back up from those low points and how you force your way through the bad times in your life. You need to push yourself has hard as you can if you want to succeed. In conclusion I believe everything about skateboarding is a good and real comparison to life.

To me life is like a cheerleading routine. In the beginning you are just getting warmed up and you are still getting a feel for things. Life takes a lot of getting used to because of all of the ups and downs. Sometimes in life you can receive something that you don’t want, just like in cheerleading something might happen that you don’t expect. If you make mistakes you can learn from them, but your mistakes may affect other people. If everyone works as a team it will make things better and maybe even easier. In life you have your highs and lows and your wins and losses. Hopefully things are going well in the routine and in life. You can only hope for the best, but you will have to accept anything less than what you wanted the outcome to be. If you practice over and over for something you can hope that the outcome is as close to perfect as possible. If you live a good life people will remember you in a good way and they will remember all that you did. If the cheerleading routine is good everyone will remember and you may even win first place. It doesn’t matter if you win first place every time; what are important are the relationships that are formed with your teammates as you go through the routine together. You learn to trust one another and you look out for each other. Life and the routine are winding down to the end and you are hoping for a great ending that would leave a great impression on everybody.

A mall is a huge building, a huge building full of many different stores. All of these stores are under one roof. It is kind of overwhelming at first. You walk down a long hallway and there are stores on your right and on your left. You can choose to either go in the store and look around, or just walk right on by. Each store is very different and has something different to offer. One store may sell clothes and the other may sell jewelry. You may spend hours in one store but only minutes in the next. Life is like a big mall. Throughout your life there are several different choices that you will have to make and you will weight each decision differently. You may be overwhelmed at times, but do not worry, that decision is just one out of the hundreds of others that you will have to make later on. Soon you will just move on to the next. Throughout your life you will like some of the things that you do, and hate some others. You may love to go to soccer practice, but hate the time spent on homework. All of these examples show how life is like a huge mall. Life is full of different choices, different paths, and you have to decide for youself which way you are going to go. You may not like the path you chose, but do not stress because there is another good things that will happen to you soon.

From my viewpoint, life is like a field hockey game. As the buzzer goes off, you are surrounded by your family or team facing your opponents. You are all in it together. As you begin playing your team gets the ball half way up the field closer to the opposite teams goal. This is very exciting. You watch as your mid fielders pass the ball from player to player avoiding the other team with grace. And suddenly the other team snatches it. Now your defenders take over trying to reclaim the ball. They call out to each other when they are available for a pass or if the need help. Finally after a few nail-biting minuets of battling in front of your goal, your defenders find a break and get the ball away from your goal. This is like everyday life. You go about your tasks whether they are challenging or easy, and if help is needed, all you have to do is look around you. People who care about you are always around you to help you if things aren’t going your way. They will help you get things back on track to help you succeed. As the midfielders get the ball farther up the field, they start passing to the forwards who get the ball in the circle right around the opponent’s goal. A few quick passes later you finally get the ball in. A point for you and your team is scored. Even though one person scores the point, it benefits the whole team. People will be happy for you when you achieve you goals. Now everything gets reset, life and the game moves on. Unfortunately, in life and in field hockey games, you’re not always in the lead. The other team gets a goal. Everyone is disappointed, but you have your team to lean on for support. You are still all in it together. You do your best in everything you do in the game and in life and it pays off. If you slack off you disappoint yourself and your team. However you can always redeem yourself. You can learn from your team just as you learn from the people in your everyday life.

Life is like running.
On some days you do fast runs, on other days you do slow runs. Sometimes life goes by slow, other times it goes by fast.

You strive to get better in running. In life you strive to get better in everything you do.

It doesn't matter how good you are, it matters that you are doing the best you can.

You have good races, and then you have bad races. Sometimes you have great days, and other times you have bad days.

You have to practice every day to get better. You have to do all your work to succeed.

No matter how good or bad you are you have to have fun and enjoy it.

People describe life in many different ways, but to me life is best described by the weather. At times where everything is going good, those are the perfect sunny days. Then there are the times where everything is mixed up and you cant seem to find yourself, those are the foggy days. Then there are times where you feel down and depressed and you just want to sit at home and mope around, those are the rainy days. Sometimes you go about and you feel in a daze, where everything is the same, those are the snowy days. Other times you can just feel in your gut something bad is going to happen. That’s when those dark ominous clouds are looming in the distance. Then there are times when you’re all over the place. Those are windy days. The trick is to bundle up or wear short sleeves. Sure the weather can set you back, like rain delays and such, but you have to find a way around it. You have to adjust to whatever the weather throws at you. So why not adjust to what life has in store, and get the most out of everything.

Life is like eating a watermelon.

First you are attached to your mother’s hip, the way all the many “future slices of watermelon” are all binded together. This happens until an action is taken to separate that bond so that it’s purpose for life may be possible.

At first, you’re life is carefree and vibrant, and as you get into the ordinary, boring schedule your life slowly dulls, like an watermelon. It first starts out a beautiful shade of pink, and then as you get closer to the rind it becomes white and tasteless tasteless.

The seeds are the negative experiences in your life. The white seeds are minor difficulties such as waking up late, getting a minor infraction in school, or getting reprimanded. These seeds are easy to overcome and can just be eaten through. Though, the more difficult of those life problems, such as a death in the family or serious illness, are black seeds. These seeds cannot be eaten and must be dealt with in a rational way. Dealing with these problems would be equivalent to spitting out the seed.

There are many things that are related to one another; however, there are two that stand out to me the most. The two things that stand out to me most that are related in an unusual way are car dealerships and school.

Car dealerships and school are related in many ways. These two things resemble two “big” parts of a person’s life.

A car dealership and a school both have a goal in which people are striving to reach towards. The goal of a salesman at a car dealership is to sell cars, while the goal of a school is to learn and educate others. A teacher wants to teach so the kids can learn, and a salesman wants to teach its customers about their cars and to sell it.

The different dealerships represent the different types of cars that they sell. The different types of cars are like the different courses and classes we are required to take.

The price ranges of a car are similar to the grading scale from “A” to “F.” An “F” being the lowest grade, is similar to paying the lowest price for a car with the most basic features. An “A” is the highest grade, which is like paying the most or highest price for a car which is the “best of the best” and contains all the “bells and whistles.”

Every time we buy a new car, we start a new beginning or chapter in our lives. The new beginning that comes along with buying a new car is the start of high school in which we learn to drive, or starting a new family in which more room is needed for the storage and the kids.

A small car is like the public schools we attend, or the community colleges we apply to. The smaller cars are meant to hold less passengers, and a community college usually has an enrollment smaller than most universities.

A big car resembles the private schools we attend, and the state universities. A bigger car allows room for more of the “college life.” A bigger car helps to hold more people, and state universities are the colleges with the most students.

Finally, the brand name cars like Mercedes, Lexus, and Bentley represent the “upper class.” These cars equal the more expensive and exclusive schools such as Harvard, Princeton, and Yale. All of these schools are the “cream of the crop” just like many of these cars.

A car dealership and a school are related in many different ways. They begin with the different classes and types, and end with the biggest brands and the exclusive schools. These two subjects relate to one another very well, and they have many similarities.

Many well-known artists write their own music. Many say that music is their life, but I say music is life. The music artists write can describe our lives. An album can be really good and hit double platinum even which in our life, can be the high points such as graduation college, or even getting married. Yet also, an album that was worked hard on, that you put so much worked in can be the worse album ever sold. Like our lives many people influence it. Choices we make can be affected by what others say. LIke an album, the consumer chooses if they like what they hear or not. Also when an artist writes a song its rare that it's perfect the first time. Like life, we make mistakes and aren't perfect whatsoever. When they write a song sometimes, an artist has writers block. Sometimes they also have to start over when they feel like the music doesn't fit right for them. They need inspiration to write music, too which can also be a reason that the music they wrote wasn't that well which is why they had to start over again. This relates to life because we all make mistakes and their are times when we start to start over. Also we have times where we don't know what to do and need inspiration to keep moving on with our lives. A song's lyrics can also describe someones life, too.In conclusion, music can be our life and can even describe our lives in ways that we sometimes dont expect. Any song or any artist can help us find the soundtrack, or soundtracks, of our life.

Life is like a flower.
In the process of a life of a flower a seed has to be planted for life to start. The same process goes for human beings and wildlife.

Once the seed is planted and born you are watering, feeding it and teaching the basic of life.

In human life we are born as helpless babies needing to be touch, feed, bathed, and nutured into childhood/ young adults.

Its the most important time of our life as a flower because this will determine the begginig and end of life. This will determine some of the choices made in our adolescents/ young adults years.

Now in adulthood we are on our own to take care of ourselves, and we dont need the care if we were a seed/ baby with nuturing. We are able to be a care giver to someone else and react to the environment with our own minds.

As we grow older and wiser we set a standard for our own seed and we have a plan for their childhood/ adolescent hood so they can succeed in their own adulthood. The ultimate goal is to be known in society as successful acheivers.

Now we have teach our seeds all we know in life our body run out of energy/ nutrients and water we start to shut down and die.

Life is like an ocean. Like many people’s lives, it ranges in many different ways. It could be beautiful and crystal blue like the Caribbean, dark and deep like the abyss, warm like the Gulf of Mexico, and as frigid as the Alaskan waters. When life is like the Caribbean, life is great and fun. When life is like the Abyss, you feel like no one knows how you feel. When life is like the Gulf of Mexico, you can walk as far as the horizon and get through everyday with new ground you have made up. And unfortunately, life can sometimes be like the frigid, dangerous Alaskan waters when you feel sick and your in bad moods. For me, when life is fun and I’m happy, the ocean is as warm as the Caribbean and the waves are a decent size, and they are fun to jump over them. When my life is upset and I’m in a bad mood, the ocean is like the freezing Alaskan waters with 50-foot swells and I am fighting every wave to get through life. I believe waves are like choices or the events happening in your life. If you make a bad decision or your life is hectic, the hurricane rolls in and the dangerous surf and rip currents try to suck you in and you fight come out alive, or back to how it was before. When you make good decisions and your life is good, you are on the Hawaiian Islands with a surf board and the blue dolphins, basking it all in. Usually my life is like a Caribbean day, but some of them can be as tough as the Alaskan waters.

My life is like a computer. Before you begin to use a computer you have to download all the necessary programs and security before your ready to use it just like how my parents had to be ready to keep me safe and ready my house for me to live in safely. Just like in life when you are just born you have no memories just like how a computer has no files. As you use a computer more and as time goes on it becomes filled with pictures, files, videos, and information; just like your mid becomes filled with thoughts and experiences of life! As the computer grows older it starts to run slower, just like it seems harder to get through life as it drags on. With usage of a computer there is a higher chance of crashes just like our bodies get worn out as we age. Fire walls and virus scanners can only protect a computer for so long just as my parents can only protect me for so long too. When a computer fails you can take it to the repair shop to get it fixed just like my friends are always there to fix me when I am hurt but some damages can never be fully repaired. After the computer fails its time to throw it away and buy a new one like starting a new family and bringing a fresh new life into this world. Then the process starts all over again.

For me, highschool is like trash can. When you first buy that shiny new trash can it can happy to finally add the small but necessary addition into your room. When you first walked into those shiny front doors you knew that this was where you belonged. As the days move on, little by little bits and pieces of trash pile in. The first few days are exciting full of games, laughter and new friends. Everything new (teachers, friends, routine) seems to move slowly but happily into your life. It all goes in one spot. You trash can is happily sitting in its corner patiently eating up all the trash. But than one day you start to throw out a lot of stuff, things keep piling up. School becomes stressful to the point where you want to break down and give up. Homework is loaded upon you, tests seem to pop out of nowhere, and before you know it midterms are around the corner. Life just gets out of control. You seem to have too much mess piling up in your trash can. It starts to take a turn for the worse and over flow on to the ground. Projects become gum sticking between tests and quizzes. Homework has much of a smell. Your trash can is a mess and it needs to be cleaned. Finally trash day comes and you happily dispose of all the mess and stress in your life. You can relax now knowing that its all disappeared. Its finally the time of year that you can sleep in late, go to the beach all day, and stay up all night; summer. But as the day grows on, the trash can begins to lurk out of its dusty corner and the calenders start to sing september.

Getting in shape is like getting braces. You might ask how those two could ever be compared but if you really look into it they really are alike. When you first try to get in shape the first few weeks are like hell and you’re sore to no end. You probably think “why am I doing this?” and “is it really worth it?” , the same exact thought run through your mind after you get your braces on because your cheeks are cut up, it hurts to chew, and you just found out you can’t eat your favorite candy! After you muscle through those first few weeks it seems to be going ok you’re able to keep up with everyone, you seem to be hydrated. With braces your cheeks have toughened up and you can finally chew but then your coach decides to take it up a notch and it seems you’re in the same boat that you started in, where you can barely breathe after any workout. For braces it’s when you get your braces tightened or a new wire. That process seems to unfortunately repeat itself a few times. Then comes one of the happiest day of your life; you get your braces off! Or you finally feel like you’re in-shape. Now that’s where you would normally think it would stop but it doesn’t, after your braces you have to maintain your perfect, straight pearly whites by wearing a retainer every night or sometimes every day. That is also what you have to do when you’re in shape, you can’t just stop there you have to remain in shape by going to the gym maybe 4 times a week, going to the gym is like wearing your retainer.

To me, life is like a tree. Both a tree and a person start out small and grow up to be something great and unique. Every tree is unique, just like every person's life is. Let’s say we take life in the perspective of one year of a tree’s life. We all start out small as a child or a sapling. Each relationship, friendship and memory we obtain in life can be represented by a leaf. Every branch on a tree can represent an experience that has made you grow and made you stronger. Throughout a lifetime, and a tree’s lifetime, we are scarred by things. These scars last forever, but in time, just like on bark on a tree, they will fade, but never be completely gone. As the year progresses, maybe and animal or two will stop by and make a home in your tree. They rely on that tree for protection, shelter, and nourishment. These animals represent our children. We must provide those three things in order to be good parents. Eventually, the animals and our children will move on. As the year progresses we will face challenges, just like a tree may face a terrible storm. We must fight for our lives when ill, just like a tree trying to stay rooted into the ground during a storm. Trees go through a series of changes, in the fall. As our lives progress, and the year progresses, we change like the leaves. The changing of the leaves in the fall, symbolize the changes we all experience in our lives. Eventually as our lives come to an end we slowly start to forget things. A tree’s leaves fall and blow away as do our memories fade and passed loved ones leave us and our memory. We are both still living until our last breath is exhaled or a tree’s last leaf falls to the ground.

In my eyes, life is like a book. When you are in a book store trying to figure out which book you should choose, the first thing that entices you into picking up the book is the front cover and title. If the front cover is dull and boring, chances are the reader will get the impression that the story is quite humdrum, and therefore is not even worth reading the back cover to see what the true meaning behind the story is. In relation to real life, we humans can be very judgmental towards people we come into contact with in our daily lives based upon differences such as looks, appearance, personality, race, and beliefs. This can often be described as “judging a book by its cover.” In doing so, we miss out on the opportunity to meet great people who we would have originally thought of as to be
quite different from our expectations; underneath the outside image of a person lies a completely different world filled with wondrous things that we could never tell about a person if we only got to know the outside part. Life is about digging into our utmost selves and the selves of others, and finding the core to our existence on this earth, and what we value most in this life. Many choices are thrown at us, and we can write down all of our decisions we make in a book and evaluate them as we grow older. In any book that you will lay your eyes upon, there will always be various emotions expressed throughout the duration of the story; whether it be happiness or sadness; whether it be in a fairy tale or a true life story. Man and woman eventually will undergo all of these emotions in some point in there life, if not several times, as we naturally mature and have deal with more pressures and challenges in life. Together, both or choices and emotions have a major role in what other people think about you, and how you would like to be portrayed. Just as in any book, it usually ends with a happy ending or a tragic ending. Ultimately, you are the only person who has control of your own book, (the story of your life) and only you have the ability to change its ending.

I'm going down a rapid, the wind rushes in my hair. The kayak tilts, but I keep it afloat. My friends all ask if I'm ok, I say yes. Then without warning a big drop happens. My Kayak flips, and I'm submerged. I struggle to flip it over, and it's scary because I'm thinking that I'm going to drown, But I always end up flipping it right side up again.
In a way, Kayaking is a lot like my, even most people's lives. There is the calm parts, that you simply sail through and relax. There are the Hard parts that you knew were coming, and you prepared for, so you make it out ok. Then there are the Sudden terrible parts that no one was expecting, and causes you to be submerged in all of yours troubles. But even if you think that you're not going to make it, just keep trying, and your boat will flip. Then your back on the surface with all of your friends, and life goes on, and you drift by another easy rapid......

Living life is like going to fires. Life can be compared to going to fires for a few reasons. First of all every time you go to a fire, there is different circumstances, different locations different layouts, and different types of buildings. Living every day we can be in different places. We can be in different states, different schools, cities, countries. We have to live every day of our lives differently. Just like every fire you must find ways to improvise, adapt, and overcome constantly changing conditions of the fire. Just like we must do the same with our lives to overcome problems and continue with our lives. One final way a fire can be compared to life is that every building layout is different making it difficult to find our way in smoky conditions you must just feel with your hands moving inch by inch trying to find any life moving inch by inch. Just like in life due to some bad influences and hard choices it is sometimes difficult for us to find the right way that we should live, and move forward with our lives day by day.

When I think of what life is like, the first thing that comes to mind is like a box of chocolates. It's famous from the movie "Forrest Gump", but you never seem to realize all the comparisons you can make through that one simple quote. 'Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get", just think in a box of chocolates you always get your favorite chocolates, the really gross chocolate, the ones that aren't chocolate, and the ones that you really haven't decided why they're in there. Your favorite chocolate represents the people who mean the most to you such as family, a best friend, or the one friend so close that they're almost family: you can trust this person with your life, or would give anything to help this person. The really gross chocolate represents the people who you thought you can trust but who turned out to be the nasty chocolates where you want nothing to do with them. Those random pieces that have nothing to do with chocolate represent the people who just show up in your life for a certain reason, may it be good or bad, that person is just there for show. And the chocolates where no one likes represent the kids who you should be nice to and may in return help you in some way.

Life is like your favorite pair of shoes.

Shoes are brand new at the beginning; sparkling, shining and beautiful.

They lift you up for a new perspective if you are willing to stick it out.

Some days you walk too far and you cannot wait to kick your shoes off for a while.

Every now and then your shoes are envied by others.

Eventually your soles will get worn out and it is time for a pair of new shoes.

The cycle begins again.

Life is like doing math homework. At first, it’s easy, just like simple addition and subtraction math equations. As a child, you don’t know much about anything. You don’t have to worry about a single thing and all you do is play and have fun. Though, when a problem does arise, your parents, siblings, or other family members are there to help you do it step by step or sometimes they even do it for you. But then, during your teenage years things get little harder and more complicated, just like long division and multiplication. There are now a lot more rules to follow and a lot more problems to solve. This is only because as you get older, you are become more independent and are given more responsibilities. But, no matter what, you still have family and friends to guide you and help you out, although, they won’t solve it for you. And finally, you reach the dreaded word problems where you have to apply everything you’ve learned into solving each problem. Some problems are more complicated than others and take a lot more time to figure out. You still go to your family and friends for advice, but now they definitely can’t tell you what to do because you are now an adult who can think and makes decisions for his/herself. Though, at some point you’re just not going to want to deal with any of these problems, you remember that there are others “working on the same problem” and that you guys can work together or you realize that ultimately it’s for your own benefit. And, when you’re all finished, you get to let out that sigh of relief that now you’re done and can move on.

There are many conceits about life, ‘Life is a Pencil’, ‘Life is a Rollercoaster’, etc. In my opinion, I think life is most like a book or a novel. We each have our own book or “life book”. Think about it, life in many ways is like a book/novel. Over the many years of your life, you grow up, meet, love, and associate with several different people. The people, friends, and family that come in and out of your life are like the characters in a book. In your own “life book” you are the main character, the narrator, and the author. Throughout your life you will have many different experiences and memories. As you grow up and become an adult, you go through different stages of your life. Each stage that you go through would be considered a new chapter in your “life book”. Every novel has a plot, a climax, and a turning point. In your “life book”, the plot would be your reason for living, your purpose, and what you want to accomplish. A climax is usually the highpoint in a book or the major part. So the climax in your actual life would be the major parts of your life; when you graduate high school and college, when you fall in love, when you get married, when you have children, or whatever other important personal memories you might have. The turning point in your life and your “life book” would be when something in your life drastically changes… like when you move away and the lifestyle you once used to know so well changes, flips upside down and your life is completely different from what you’re used to. A book’s theme is the message the author/narrator/main character (a.k.a. you), is trying to get through to the readers (everyone in your life that is surrounding and watching you). Your life also has a theme, but instead of just one or two themes, your life has many themes. The themes in your life are the many lessons you’ve learned and acquired over the years. And finally, just like every good book, every good life must come to an end.

School to me is one of the most fun experience daily especially when you can share it with friends. Dont get me wrong though it has its days
where school just really feels like a prison. As soon as you get inside you have minimal time to talk to what few friends you can find before the bell rings and the prison officers herd you into your cell just like the teachers force all the students into their respective homerooms. The uniforms we are required to wear daily are constant reminders of where we are and why we are there much like the jumpsuits of inmates. Lunch is the only time where you get to see all your friends and meet new ones too, mess hall is just like this you can meet people or see ones you already know. Once a day the inmates are given the chance to get some fresh air and stretch out with some physical activity but only for a short time just like the little 41 minutes a day we get in gym to loosen up but then its right back into uniform and back into a cell or other classroom. Then after what seems like years we are finally allowed to be released back into society to do as we please like being dismisssed at the conclusion of the day of school. Despite being released the true students always end up back in school as do the real criminals land themselves back in prison no matter how much we dont want to. School has its fun times but it also has moments where it can feel and have many characteristics of the worst place on earth.
-Last night I was writing this and my laptop died and i didnt have time to rewrite the whole thing sorry about it being late, thanks.(And i dont really mean this school is fun!)

Life can be compared to many things but I want to compare it to a big ball of yarn. At first you are one continuous strand of yarn. As the yarn gets used it gets shorter; closer to being done with. Throughout the life of yarn it gets cut into different pieces and made in to different things. No matter what it gets made into it is still a piece of yarn. This resembles human life by as a teenager you try different things but you are still the person from the beginning of life. Lastly sometimes yarn get cut way too long for something that is real easy. Or sometimes cut to short and needs more yarn to make the craft. People try to do as many things and end up have nothing done or vice verso. This is how I see life!

Life is a spinning roulette wheel. Every spin gives you a different number. Every day gives you something new. Sometimes you will hit the jackpot and other days will leave you make you feel ruined. The wheel is always turning and you will never know what will happen. As the white ball falls into a different slot you will never know what will happen to you during the day. Just like life every day you wake up and start a new day you hope that the day will bring you good fortune but sometimes life doesn’t always go as we expect it to. Like roulette we hope for a big win just as with life you always want things to go well. Sometimes you are willing to risk a fortune on a single spin just as with life you are willing to take big risks to get want you want. Just as some people bet large amounts of money, others will only bet a few dollars because they do not want to loose everything they have. Roulette is a game of luck just as life can go really well with the right amount of luck.

Life is like crack cocaine.
I admit this view is a little strange, but my imagination gets the best of me sometimes. No matter what you are always going to want more of it. For a short time you will enjoy yourself but no matter what hard times(withdrawal) will come. Sometimes we are so distracted by it that we forget to look around and enjoy the simple things. If you don't have it you die, quite literally. You are going to meet people who will lie and steal from you. You will do anything, no matter how extreme, to keep getting it. We constantly try to distract ourselves from the stress of reality, to the cost of our bodies. It will drain you no matter what. There are going to be "high's" and lows. In the end we end up dying anyway, so its all good.

My favorite conceit was written by James French, in it he wrote about how life is like an amusement park. I really enjoyed hearing his point of view. I thought it was very interesting and made many good points.

My life is like an Amazing Race. Since the day I was born, I came into the world running like I was in a race. I came so fast that my parents could not make it to the hospital, and I was born in my house. I still am running fast today. My life is constantly moving. I wake up each morning to go to school, come home in the afternoon to do my homework, and then go to bed and wake up to do it all over again. Sometimes I may “run” fast, or other days I may go slowly. Like in any race you come to the obstacles, or the hard situations you must overcome in order to finish. Everyday I reach the hills and valleys of the course. One day I may feel as if I am below everyone else, or feel like quitting. Other days I could feel invincible, or on top of the world. Many times I feel exhausted and unable to continue. Sometimes I feel like someone else will finish before me and leave me falling short of my goals. However in the end I always seem to exceed my expectations, and come out on top. I have my struggles and I have my triumphs, but through everything I am still striving and racing toward my goal, the prize. Right now I’m not sure what that is. Certainly college first, but after that who knows where the race will take me.

Life at a cheerleading competition is like life in school. In school you always are trying to be the best, and that's what you want to do at cheerleading competitions. When I walk into a cheerleading competition I have this feeling inside me that is self conscious because I know there are better cheerleaders than me, kinda like in school when I get self conscious when I see a really pretty girl or a really skinny girl, or someone that is just really smart. Then, at the cheerleading competitions I have time eat and talk with my friends. It is like in school when it is your lunch time, and you are happy to get a break, and just get to gossip with your friends. When the coaches announce it is time to go to warm ups, that is when I get the butterfly's in my stomach. In school when I know I have a test and it is going to be really hard I get the same feeling in my stomach, and I just want to get the test over with. Then, is when you hit the big blue mat, and it is my time to shine on the competition floor. I get this feeling that nothing can stop me, like in school when you have those days that you know that nothing is going to ruin your day, and you just feel so good about your self. When I get off the floor, it is the same feeling that I get when I finish a test and know I did good on it, that all my hard work has paid off. It is finally time for awards where you find out what place your team got. This when I feel like that I have tried so hard, that no matter what place, or grade I get, it doesn't matter because I did my best.

For the sophomore conceit poems my favorite was AJB Green’s Life is like a desk. As I was reading this everything that this person said all “fit together”. When AJB wrote that “you put out what stuff you want them to see on top of the desk and show them only that” it’s basically like showing people your personality, keeping the things in the way back of the bottom drawer is for those secrets that you should just keep to yourself. The most important things you would keep in the top drawer so that you always remember them, and all the rest of your information everywhere else, where you could possibly lose it. But whatever you do with it, it will be with whatever you like.

Life is like the inside of a computer. Life is complicated and full of problems just like a computer. There are so many different parts that have to work together but somehow it just keeps running. Your body is full of crazy parts and stuff that we don’t even understand, but it all works together so you can make it through the day. When the computer breaks you call the geek squad and they fix it, when you are sick or have broken bones you go to the doctor and they give you medicine or something to make it better. As the computer gets older it starts to slow down and get outdated just like old people. Eventually it will just stop working and you will throw it away.
