Purple Senior Lab Day--Vocab, Notes, and Journal #3


1. Choose any ten (10) vocabulary words from the list below and write sentences using them correctly in context and giving clues to their meanings.

Post your sentences here at Schoolsville before the end of class today, Sept. 23.

You MAY work with a partner, in which case you should identify yourselves with both your initials in your post.



I hope to make up your vocabulary test (on Tuesday, Sept. 28) from your class's sentences.

Here's the list:

Antebellum—before the war
Antithesis--opposition; contrast: the antithesis of right and wrong.
Autocratic—rule by a single person, dictatorship
Benefactor--a person who confers a benefit; kindly helper.
Asynchronous--not occurring at the same time.
Circumlocution—talking in circles; roundabout speaking
Convene--to come together or assemble, usually for some public purpose.

1. The verdict of the trial came as a shock to the defendant.

2. Soon the dentist will need to extract my wisdom teeth, something I'm not looking forward to.

3. The weather in Delaware has an annoying tendency to fluctuate from warm to cold, never reaching a comfortable medium.

4. I visited the doctor to learn the identity of my mysterious malady.

5. The omnivorous dog eats anything it can find.

6. The scent of the air freshener began to permeate the room.

7. The crossing guard went to the intersection to divert traffic away from the fallen tree.

8. The medicine was used to counteract the disease.

9. While platypuses may seem innocuous, the males actually have poisonous spines on their back legs.

2. Verdict: The verdict of when Harry Potter comes out is November 19th.
3. Extract: Yellow mucus was extracted form the bulging boil on James' tongue.
4. Hyperbolic: Movies are hyperbolic of stereotypical life.
5. Permeate: The water permeated the sponge.
6. Convene: The fans convened in the stadium anticipating the game.
7.Neophyte: Cori is a neophyte to Rebekah's twisted world.

2. By contributing a vast amount of money to the charity, Natalie made herself a benefactor to the event.
3. The town convened to hear the senator’s reelection speech he would give that evening.
4. After months of trials and hearings, the judge’s verdict was not in Sarah’s favor.
5. Over the summer, many students from Saint Mark’s got their wisdom teeth extracted by various dental surgeons.
6. The stockbroker watches the fluctuations in the stock market very closely throughout the year.
7. Despite the fact that many girls are scared of stinkbugs, they are in fact innocuous.

They extracted the truth from the witness through interrogation.

Verdict-
After debating the innocence of the defendant for hours, the jury’s verdict was guilty.

Malady-
In the 19th century many died from common maladies because there was a lack of modern medicine.

Innocuous-
Although the dogs bark is quite
loud, he’s actually innocuous.

Convene-
The football team convened for dinner to discuss their new plays.

Permeate-
When the water spilled in her backpack it permeated through all of her notebooks making them difficult to read.

Divert-
When the girls saw their enemy walking towards them they diverted down another hall to avoid awkward tension.

Equidistant-
Since the two boys live equidistant from the mall, they always meet there to hang out.

Retrospect-
In retrospect I realized that I had a lot of fun in high school even though I always complained.

The label on the bug spray said that the chemicals in the spray were innocuous to humans and animals in the household, but killed all bugs.

Elizabeth extracted the juice from the lemon to make a nice summer drink.

The army counteracted the attack by receiving extra troops in order to win the battle.

The jury announced the verdict with confidence that the defendant who committed the assault was guilty.

In retrospect it may not have been a good idea to blow off the assignment.

I tried to dissuade him from entering the burning building.

Both gas stations were equidistant from the house.

They tried to take health precautions but it was too late, the virus had permeated through the whole building.

Knowing he committed the crime and there was plenty of evidence, the criminal was terrified of the verdict.

Although the huge dog looked vicious, it turned out to be completely innocuous.

His prolonged stress caused his blood pressure to fluctuate.

The lab worker went through long tedious work to extract the active ingredient of the solution.

I couldn’t make it to school last week due to a malady.

The choir sounded terrible and sang asynchronously.

2. Lindsay Lohan now awaits the judge’s verdict for the charges pressed against her for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
3. The water permeated the ‘so called’ waterproof lining of our window.
4. Annie was a benefactor of the fundraiser by donating the most money.
5. In the United States, we don’t believe in autocratic rule.
6. I dissuaded Mr. Fiorelli from texting in class, by telling him that we were going to fail if we didn’t finish our assignment.
7. The boys planned a diversion so that they could steal candy from the store, without being seen by the clerk.
8. Circumlocution is common when people don’t know what they are talking about.
9. We told our friend that her dress didn’t look good in the most innocuous way possible, as to not hurt her feelings.
10. To extract the answer from the problem, we got rid of other useless information.

The jury sent the verdict to the judge; the defendant was not guilty of the crime he was accused of.

The freshmen are the neophytes of high school.

Through propaganda, each politician will try to dissuade the public from voting for the other candidates.

In order to properly carve a pumpkin, you must extract the seeds and pulp from the inside of it.

Since the teacher’s mood fluctuates frequently, I find it difficult to ask her questions when I don’t understand a certain concept.

Our new puppy is innocuous, even though the children are afraid to go near it because of its bark.

The gracious benefactors decided to remain anonymous.

People are considered omnivorous because they eat both plants and meat.

The fancy sauce counteracts the plain piece of meat, making it very pleasing to eat.

Some maladies of the past are not considered as deadly as they once were due to medical and technological advances.

The Bible group convenes in the church basement every Monday night. John Dickinson counteracted John Adams’ proposal for a Declaration of Independence. The jury’s verdict was guilty for crimes against humanity. Our class always tries to dissuade our teacher from giving us homework on weekends. John and Chris live equidistant to the school despite driving different routes. The artist extracted the smallest detail from the artwork while the students had a difficult time seeing it. Politicians often fluctuate their opinions in order to win over votes for an election. The pet snake seemed innocuous until it bit my friend. My dad has a very omnivorous appetite, while I prefer to eat more meat than anything else. The unwelcome stinkbugs permeated throughout the house.

1. In order to counteract the opposition we chose to show the incriminating video that will surely be their downfall.
2. George tends to make hyperbolic statements when it comes to people who have annoyed him.
3. Even though the events were asynchronous they were still dependent on the others outcome.
4. In retrospect my decision was not one I would make now.
4. I dissuaded my sister from using the computer by telling her what she wanted to hear.
5. When speaking I have been known to make circumlocutory statements, often.
6. My benefactor was quite surprised when I wrote her a letter.
7. Our group of friends made a credo on what to do would something happen to one of us.
8. the neophytes were kept in the dark about where we were going until we needed them to know.
9. Some of my teachers have the belief that they are in an autocratic society, when it comes to doing things their way.
10. The senator who was known to fluctuate on the issues was unable to get successfully reelected.

1. A generous benefactor donated a truckload of pastry goods to the Jelly Donut Foundation (JDF) last week.
2. Last week, the long and strenuous trial came to a final verdict; the defendant was found guilty of Third Degree Crumpet Capturing.
3. We discovered last week that the jelly inside a scrumptious jelly donut is equidistant to the ends of the donut.
4. My sister attempted to dissuade my mother from purchasing last week’s Scone Weekly.
5. I caught a malady from my younger sibling who was sneezing and coughing uncontrollably in my cup-o-joe all last week.
6. In the past week, my weight has seemed to fluctuate because my diet now consists of jelly donuts, crumpets, scones, and coffee only.
7. I was on my way to the town festival last week when hunger struck! I had to divert my horse and buggy to go to the local scone market.
8. I was at a jelly donut-eating contest last week held in the town of Sconeville, which is located in the providence of Crumpetstonburg, I was teaching a young neophyte the proper way to victoriously win the jelly donut challenge.
9. In retrospect I realized I became quite obsessed, to say the least, with crumpets, scones, and jelly donuts last week, so I must come to a halt. But I still enjoy a piping hot cup-o-joe.
10. In the closing stages of last week I have come to the conclusion that the jelly donut is the most sanctimonious pastry good that has ever pleasured my taste buds.

1.Used to antebellum way of life Scarlett O’Hara wasn’t accustomed to doing the simplest things in life.
2.Although I wished she hadn’t died, my grandmother had named me the benefactor of her cherished emerald necklace that I have always admired.
3.We were to convene at the location an hour beforehand to set up for the party.
4.When the child didn’t like his father’s decision he went to his mother hoping that she would counteract her husbands judgment.
5. At the trial the verdict seemed cut and dry, but when was put on the table we changed our minds.
6.Although I considered it to be the party of the year my friend knew of the hostesses wild reputation and tried to dissuade me from going.
7.When I knew something was up I tried to extract information from my younger brother, the family sneak.
8.When I tried to convince my mother that I was sick she told me that I was fine because it’s normal for your body temperature to fluctuate.
9.The smell of freshly baked cookies permeated the room.
10.When I saw my friend getting angry with sales person at the store I tried to divert her attention towards the makeup counter.

7) My math grade fluctuated as tests were given.
8) What was thought to be a dangerous and harmful chemical found in the families home, turned out to be innocuous.
9) When the teacher asked where the girl’s homework was, she gave a hyperbolic response explaining how aliens abducted her assignment.
10) I live equidistant from school and the mall, both 10 minutes away.
