Seniors #1 journal--Every Picture Tells a Story, Don't It?

This is your first journal assignment of the second quarter. Read the assignment in class today (Tuesday, Nov. 10), do a little web browsing, start writing, name and save your document, and then finish and post before the weekend is over. Of course, you'll have to print out your response and turn it in with your journal at the end of the quarter. That's nothing new.

Rockin' Rod Stewart borrowed the old cliche that "every picture tells a story" for an uptempo rocker of a song (is there any other kind?) of the early 70s. Treat yourself to an itunes download or a free play at your favorite download site like Rhapsody (just don't do it now in class). Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Woods, formerly with Stewart's band called The Faces, plays a searing lead guitar in the song. Yes, I did see Rod Stewart and The Faces in concert at the soon to be defunct Spectrum in Philly.

This info (or even the quick listen) won't help you with your assignment, but it will add to your limited knowledge of 70s rockers. No, the 70s weren't completely disco, though even Rockin' Rod would sadly succumb to the strings and strobe lights, too.

Your assignment?

Analyze a painting or photograph

Step I: Look at the painting/photograph and describe what you see objectively without editorial comments. Note figures, colors, objects, etc.

Step II: Begin to analyze the painting/photograph, with attention to lines (specifically, where is your eye drawn?), shapes, balance, emphasis, contrast, proportion, unity, harmony, colors, etc. Here is an excellent link to a web site that will help novices like us to know WHAT and HOW to analyze. You don't have to analyze EVERYTHING, just enough of what you see and understand.

Step III: Now, based on WHAT you've seen, reflect on how the painting/photograph makes you feel and/or what story (or message) it tells. Look for symbols, especially, in doing this.

I suspect that we're all rank amateurs here (if there IS a artist in the class, please speak up and teach us the art), so don't feel intimidated or fear that you'll be wrong in whatever choice you make.

Here's a photograph by award-winning photographer Annie Liebowitz that I'll use as an example.

Pictured below are actress Gweneth Paltrow and her mother, actress Blythe Danner.

The photograph tells a very human and real story.

It was taken a short time after Paltrow's father and Danner's husband, Bruce Paltrow, passed away.

In the photo, Danner, in a mourning black turtleneck, has ironically assumed the role of her deceased spoused, that of the comforting father figure. Danner looks a trifle sad, but more brave. She peers directly into the camera lens. Nestled closely to her daughter, she provides physical and emotional support, embracing her around the waist, her left shoulder buttressing Paltrow's forlorn figure.

Paltrow, in a white dress that falls off her left shoulder, is Danner's little girl who submissively accepts her mother's warm embrace. Her eyes closed, she also looks sad, but peaceful. Note that Paltrow's hands are locked with her mothers. Paltrow's white fallen dress reinforces her need for comfort, to be clothed, warmed, healed, by her mother's touch.

This posed, staged, photograph, is a work of art. It was not snapped by some digital camera carrying fan and downloaded hastily on the internet. It begs for analysis, as it is more than just a "pretty picture."

Of course, so does Jamie Wyeth's painting Patriot's Barn, a print of which hangs in my family room. Headed north on DE 82, the barn can be found on the left hand side of the road about a half a mile before entering Centreville or about a mile after you pass the entrance to Winterthur.
Wyeth painted this soon after the tragedy of 9-11. I'm not entirely sure if the flag was ever really on the barn (it isn't on there now), or if Wyeth added the image for his painting.

Regardless, it is the flag that makes the barn, and the painting, so patriotic. It's emblazoned on the whitewashed barn, and its reflection (emphasizing and symbolizing both Wyeth and the barn painter's patriotism) is cast in the pond that lies at the base of the painting. The somewhat subdued blue sky symbolizes perhaps, the uneasy atmosphere that enveloped our world after the bombings. The red and blue colors of the flag, and the green of the rolling landscape are more alive. Alive with hope and patriotism, because of the patriot painters--the owner of the land and Wyeth. Their shared message is as loud and clear as the sight of the star spangled banner (and that the national anthem that it inspired) that flew over Ft. McHenry during the bombing of Baltimore during the War of 1812. American patriotism cannot be defeated.

To me, this painting is a patriotic equivalent to the Marines who raised Old Glory after the Battle of Iwa Jima during WW II (see link to this famous Life magazine photograph). I especially enjoy this painting because the barn sits about five miles from where I live, and when I pass it, I think of Wyeth's painting.

So, this is your assignment. Find a photograph or a painting that also begs closer study and analysis, and do so, as I have done. Refer back to the beginning of this post for specific directions.

Here are some other examples of photos and paintings (that you may write about) that I might have talked about in class had I been in school (in order, Nighthawks, Edward Hopper; Willie Nelson, Annie Liebowitz; Elvis Presley's Phonograph; Annie Liebowitz; The Singing Butler, Jack Vettriano.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: AS SOON AS YOU BEGIN WORK IN A WORD DOCUMENT, SAVE IT AND NAME IT, IN CASE YOUR WORD CRASHES. IF THE DOCUMENT IS NAMED, IT CAN USUALLY BE RETRIEVED.

P lease print me a copy of your photograph or painting to include with your written analysis when you turn in your journal at the end of the quarter.

Picture of people dancing:

step 1:In this photo I see three people an umbrella and ground that looks like its on the horizon and clouds. Color in this photo include faded light grayish blue, pinkish red, faded black, shades of tan and brown, grayish white, pale skin tones, and a deep blue.
Step 2: My eyes are drawn to the woman dancing with the man because of the red dress she is wearing. It is the brightest color in the picture and sticks out against all the other drown out colors. The sky blends into the clouds and the shadows of the people blend into the tan ground they are dancing on. The man with the umbrella( in contrast to the people dancing) is closer in the frame of the picture. His umbrella is cut out of the photo. The two people dancing are in a smaller proportion than the umbrella man.
Step 3: It looks like someone’s “happy place” of a different time period. The dream of a woman and a man dancing together in love on the beach, possibly. The man with the umbrella is also having this fantasy but he is clearly content with himself not having a significant other but still enjoys the scenery.

Step I: In this photograph, I see excitement and joy! The Philadelphia Phillies have just won the 2008 World Series. You can see the thrilled and ecstatic expressions on all of their faces. Looking at this picture reminds me of a happy day when everyone united together to celebrate their victory. The only colors that need to be in this picture are red and white!

Step II: I let my eyes focus on the man in the center of the huddle. His face ties the entire picture together. He appears to be strongly overjoyed by his facial expression and the power of his arms shooting up into the air. The photo, as a whole, shows the importance of teamwork and prize that comes with it. These men all do what they love together to bring happiness not only to themselves, but also to all of their fans. They unite us just by putting on their red and white uniforms.

Step III: This picture makes me smile when I look at it. I am reminded of a wondrous day when everyone came together as a team to support our favored Phillies. As I said before, the photo shows the importance of teamwork. It shows us that by following your dreams you can achieve happiness and greatness. The parade was an amazing day when complete strangers connected by the win of the Phillies. If only it could have been this year, we could experience this feeling again.

In this photo you see a marine engaged in a gunfight. You cannot see who is shooting him or whom he is shooting at. Though, you do see that someone is returning fire. You see chunks of the wall very close to the soldier’s head being blown apart. You see that the soldier has teammates backing him up around the corner and next to him on the wall that they are taking cover with. You also see that there is a tree next to the wall. This tree is the only lively green in the picture. The rest is a blend of army camouflage, khaki and green, and the color of the dirt and sand that they are fighting on. This picture tells you a lot of the kind of fight they are engaged in. I would guess that the soldiers were ambushed because they are not in full combat gear. It looks as if they had to get up and rush to return fire. Having time to grab nothing but their guns. This soldier is probably scared. You see his eyes clenched shut. This is probably to shield his eyes from the blast of dirt from the wall being fired upon. I would guess that in his mind he is scared yet full of adrenaline ready to fight back against the opponent putting him and his teammates in danger. His right hand is almost detached from the gun. He’s reacting to the bullet that he just dodged, barely missing his skull.

http://todaysseniorsnetwork.com/Iwo%20Jima%20Flag%20Raising.gif

Part I
In the picture I chose there are five men raising an American flag on the rubble that was caused by the defeat of the Japanese in Iwo Jima. The picture was taken in black and white. It looks like it is a clear, sunny day.

Part II
In the picture my eyes were drawn to the guy in the center holding the flag. The black and white sets the picture of because it makes you focus on the picture as a whole and not on just the colors that are used. The men draw your eye toward them because of the way they look and what they are doing. You can see that they are tired by the way that they are straining their bodies to raise the flag.

Part III
This picture makes me think about war and what the soldiers go through while they are fighting. This shows that war is not only easy and makes you appreciate what they do for us when they protect us. Iwo Jima was a very bloody and tiring part of World War II and this picture shows the soldiers raising the American flag after they defeated the Japanese.

Senior Journal #1:

I: In this photograph you can note an elephant with various colors painted on its head. There is a red dot on the elephant’s forehead, surrounded by green, pink, yellow and blue.

II: When looking at this photograph your attention is first drawn to the red dot on the elephant’s forehead. There is value in this photograph, with a different degree of light and darkness. There are shadows toward the right side, while the left side is brighter, almost as if the sun is shining on the left side of the photo. Also there is pattern in this photograph because the same colors appear on both sides of the red dot on the elephant’s forehead.

III: Based on what I’ve seen in this photograph I can say that the photo was taken to inspire a particular culture. The red dot on the elephant’s forehead appears to be very Indian. The history of this photo says that elephants such as this one carry tourists through the ancient compounds of Agra Fort and Palace. Reading this history shows me that this photograph has a lot of meaning and stands for the Indian culture.

I: In the photo, there are four men crossing a street. There are large white stripes on the ground and small white dashes perpendicular to the larger ones. There are many colors including, white, baby blue, dark blue, black, different shades of brown ranging from dark to light, green, and different skin tones.
II. My eyes are instantly drawn to the man wearing the white suit. It contrasts the road and the baby blue sky above him. With the four of them walking together, it attracts your attention to the other three men. Though, one is sticking out like a sore thumb, the other three are brought to your attention by the same action that they are doing, which is walking across the street. Each of them have a foot forward, which attracts your attention since each leg is sticking out in front of the person.
III. Even though they're all crossing the road, it looks like they're crossing it together in unity. They each have a foot forward, which to me seems like an optimistic message about life. You can always put a foot forward and continue to move on. The driving away from them sort of helps with the significance of my opinion because they obviously had to wait for those cars to pass in order to walk on the crosswalk to the other side, but, the picture cuts off from the oncoming traffic, so we don't know if there's a car stopped for them or if nothing is there. Therefore, the cars passing could easily be problem that they've had and now they're confidently crossing the street to the other side, not worrying about what's heading for them.

Picture of soldiers lined up and one of them holding a little girls hand.

Step 1. In this particular photo, there are many soldiers lined up at attention with one holding a little girls hand. I see the soldiers are serious at attention but this tiny girl shows that she is upset because she rubbing her eyes. And it looks like a bright summer day due to the clothes the little girl is wearing.

Step 2. My eyes are drawn to the little girl and her fathers hands, but mostly the little girl. I notice this in particularly because all the soldiers in their uniforms tend to blend in but then you have the vibrant colors of the girls dress that tends to stand out. This photo shows the love that a girl has for her father and despair that he is leaving. The vibrant colors of the trees and lightening tend to contradict the mood the little girl is probably feeling. Im assuming that the men were about to leave and the girl might have ran over to him not wanting to let go and see him leave.

Step 3. When i see this photo it makes me feel sad because I'm sure it is hard to let your dad go overseas for a long time. Its heartbreaking to see a child upset and even upsetting to see the dad wanting to hug her again but he has a duty to do at the same time so he shows his love by holding on to her hand. But at the same time i feel a sense of gratefulness because this man is leaving his surrounding for a while to help fight for our country. I am very thankful for those who are in the service and pray for their families because this is probably a hard time for them.

"The Scream" by Edvard Munch

Step One: In this painting there is a man standing on a bridge screaming. It appears to be at sunset because the sky is a red-orange. The colors are all swirled together and everything blends together except for the screaming man.

Step two: My eye is drawn to the man screaming because he is the largest in the painting and not swirled together like the rest of the painting. There are two figures on the bridge with him, but they are not as noticable because they are smaller and dark figures.

Step three: I think that this shows that the man was extremely stressed out and he reached this point on the bridge and just stopped and screamed.

http://imagecache5.art.com/p/LRG/17/1726/B793D00Z/audrey-hepburn.jpg

Part 1: This photo of Audrey Hepburn is entirely black and white. In it, she seems to be walking, or crossing, the street. She is dressed very elegantly in the little black dress and sunglasses. Her necklace adds a touch of class.

Part 2: My eyes are obviously drawn to Audrey Hepburn, herself. She is clearly the focal point of the picture and the emphasis is on her. The sunglasses specifically are what catches my eyes most. They are taking up a large part of her face.

Part 3: To me, this picture is sort of a representation of the life that Audrey Hepburn may have lived. She exudes elegance and confidence. Her attire is extremely classy but the style and size of the sunglasses make it look somewhat mysterious or that she is trying to hide. She has a to-go cup of a beverage which signals that she is busy, or in a rush. The fact that it is taken on the street makes it seem almost like a paparazzi shot. All in all, to me, Audrey Hepburn is most noticable as a glamorous public figure in this photograph.

http://www.piersidegallery.com/artists/kinkade/kinkade-2009-tinker-bell-and-peter-pan-fly-to-neverland-art-thomas-painting.jpg

I. The painter mostly uses cool colors, such as blue and purple. There are only five actually people shown and tinker bell stands out the most in the photo. She is very contrast to her surroundings. Big Ben also stands out a lot because it is lit up, while all the other building are the same blue of the rest of the scene.
II. There is much constrast in this painting. Only a few things really stand out among the blue: Tinkerbell and Neverland. Also, your eyes are immediately drawn to Tinkerbell and that helps lead your eyes to the other people in the painting. Some of the shapes are common: triangle, rectangle, circle etc. because there are buildings in the picture that are composed of these shapes. Also, the painter uses the clouds to form the other characters of the story.
III. This picture is definitely worth a thousand words. It depicts the entire story of Peter Pan. It shows the mood of the story. At first the story is happy and as you get toward the middle there is events that are bad and than there is a happy ending. In the painting the first thing you see is Tinkerbell and Big Ben which are both lit and Neverland is also lit with bright colors showing a happy ending. All the stuff in the middle is darker. The clouds are my favorite part of this painting because the other characters are formed from the clouds, which I think is a cool effect.

This past summer, my family and I packed our bags and flew to Hawaii for a beautiful, exciting trip in the tropics. As I look through our album today, I can remember how much fun we had, especially snorkeling in Hanauma Bay. The picture my family always fills me with happiness as it shows them cheerfully posing with beach stuff on an observation ledge, overlooking a crystal blue Pacific Ocean, luscious palm trees swaying in the breeze, and grand volcanic formations. The shapes of the photograph, I feel, are like windows into paradise. You see my family as a bright and colorful, irregular shape as the main attraction, with little hints of a stunning background. One of the problems I noticed was that the balance is a little off center because my family is off to the left when they are suppose to be the point of emphasis, with Hawaii accompanying them. Therefore there is a little contrast between my family and the background because one’s eye soon moves from the left, where my family is situated, to the right to absorb the scenery. Also, some of the scenery, such as the top of the palms, didn’t blend behind my family, which causes a little disruption in the clarity of the picture. Lastly, although the props add to the location, I feel they are a little distracting and cut off a major part of the coral reef below. Overall, I feel that the harmony is perfect because the set is very natural with the wind blowing, the waves crashing and tan locals and tourists walking lazily on the powdered, white sand. Refering back to the “windows of paradise” metaphor, you feel like you can almost step inside!
Based on what I have seen, I feel that for an inexperienced photographer, I did a fairly good job after educating myself on the terms and analyzing tools of artists. I think I really captured the emotion of the moment which is the number one goal in our family vacation pictures, so that we can truly remember the great times and wonderful places we have been. As I said, this picture makes me feel very happy. It makes me remember the good time we had snorkeling and the awesome opportunity I had to run in such scenic county. My family is also showing off the hand signal for “hang loose” which shows how relaxed that day was. As a final thought, the picture shines very brightly with color and character which signifies for me that the sun is always shining in Hawaii and I will always remember, with the help of this portable photograph, the great time I had with my ohana.

Photograph: From the Wizard of Oz editorial in Vogue(with Keira Knightley, John Currin, Jasper Johns, & Brice Marden) shot by Annie Leibovitz.

http://michaelmay.us/08blog/awesomelist/0801n_keiraoz.jpg

Step I: When I look at the photograph, I see four people heading towards 'The Emerald City'. There is a bright mixture of green, red, and yellow.

Step II: My eyes are automatically drawn to Keira Knightley who is representing Dorothy. Her white dress and sparkling red shoes are the center of the photo. I also notice the green overlay of New York City to show the Emerald City. The yellow brick road cuts right through the red poppies and seems to go on forever.

Step III: The photograph makes me feel like I have taken the journey through Oz with them. New York is the dream city for many people and it definitely is the city of opportunity. So, it's obvious why Annie Leibowitz used New York City to represent The Emerald City. Also, I feel like the 'Tin Man' and the 'Scarecrow' are hopeful for the city and can't wait to enter. Their bodies are toward the city and the 'Tin Man' is even pointing it out to the group. However, I think that 'Dorothy' and the 'Lion' are thinking of something else. Judging by the look on 'Dorothy's' face, she looks tired but relieved. She also has a hint of pride in that she made it this far in her journey. That is why I think that she is glancing back to see all that she has overcome. The 'Lion' has a look of concern and it almost looks like he is pondering whether or not he should stay with the group or run back to his forest. His left leg is bent as if he is preparing to flee in case the Emerald City is not as great as he hopes it will be.

In this painting, the first thing that draws my attention are the two large hands that are cupping the old woman and the child. To me, this could mean the own little world we have within each one of us. Notice the lighter contrast. We are kept safe in the hands of God. This also, at a glance, reminds me of a nativity scene. God keeping us safe within the hands, and also the globe which represents the north star. The beautiful colors within the scenery show a peaceful, safer side of the world and how it relates to us. From another perspective, the globe within the teardrop could show how hurt the world is from all the war and destruction. The rest of the painting backs that up by showing what the world should look like to us, not just a warzone. We should be able to feel safe in our own home and neighborhood. This painting is very symmetrical and proportional which allows balance into our own world. With no dramatic color change, there is a calming feel with this picture.

For my painting, I chose the very popular "American Gothic" by Grant Wood. In this painting, one sees an older couple standing in front of their farm. They have expressionless faces and are wearing very dull colored clothes. The man is holding a pitchfork in his right hand and one can tell that their barn behind them in well kept. While analyzing this painting, one must remember that it was painted in 1930, during the Great Depression. When one views the painting, their eye is drawn to two of the most colorful parts of the painting, the woman’s eyes and her broach that she wears. The woman’s eyes are a ghostly-pale blue, which are looking away from the observer opposed the man next to her (possibly her husband), who is looking directly at the observer. One could assume that she is unhappy with her life since the great depression. The emphasis on her broach she wears on her collar could be symbolic to their financial difficulties, since it is the only piece of jewelry she has. There are many different contrasting textures within this painting, especially between the house’s siding and the clear blue sky. It is well proportioned, with the couple standing in front of the house, making the observer focus on them, and less of their surroundings. This picture puts me in sort of a saddened mood; one cannot help but to share in their somber expressions. I think that this painting tells a sorrowful story of the struggles that many Americans had to go through during the Great Depression. The pitchfork the man holds may symbolize the exceptional hardships that the agricultural workers took, and the woman looking away may symbolize the strain that this put on their families.

Step 1: This picture is very busy. There are all kinds of different people doing different things. There are animals as well, some don’t seem to belong. It’s a bright picture but the colors are all of a similar hue.
Step 2: My attention is drawn to the giant head of the man in the center. His mouth is wide open, it just draws your eyes right in. This picture is chaotic, my eyes dance from image to image and each time I discover something new. The colors are soothing, yet energetic and lively at the same time. There is no room for space in this picture; it is covered from corner to corner with a variety of images.
Step 3: This photo makes me want to go out and join these people. It looks like one big celebration, everyone is having fun. Everyone is a character, they all seem unique. This also looks like a version of Mardi Gras. People are lined in the streets and on balconies, beads are being thrown.

Photo: The Steerage by Alfred Stieglitz

Step 1: In this photo there is a steerage ship, also known as immigrant ships during the immigrations of the 1840s. There are many many immigrants in this photo all cramped together on this relatively small ship, from what can be told from the photo.

Step 2: The photograph is in black and white because the photo was taken when photography was at it origins, and is a series the of leading lines technique, which is that something in the picture guides your eyes around the picture sort of like a tour of the photot. If you start at the bottom left of the photo the metal shaft in the floor leads with vertical lines up to the rope rails which lead your eyes to the immigrants crammed on the second floor of the ship, then the rails across the second floor lead your eyes to the stairs which takes you back down to the first floor on the right side of the photo this time. Another technique used is color differential. If you observe both groups, the group on the first floor and the group on the second floor, no one person stands out, but if you look at each group one group is dressed in white while the other is in all black clothes.

Step 3: This photo is a story, a sort of account of events. It tells of the hardship and tire some journey many had to take to come to the U.S. It is also historical because this event actually took place in history. It makes me feel proud of my heritage knowing that at one time my family like many others took a chance and made an impossible journey to realize a dream they had. This picture is evidence that these past immigrants now seen as valuable to the original survival of this country were then seen as a bother and therefore forced to endure hardship and cramped together.

Firefighters lifting up the American flag.

Step I: In this picture I see three firefighters dressed in dark clothing. They are covered in debris and dust. They are putting up an American flag. The background of the picture is grayish white. It is the remains of various structures of steel and concrete.
Step II: The firefighters are looking up at the American flag. The flag is the main focal point of the picture. The background is a vast bland space, but then the eye settles on the vibrant bold colors of the red, white and blue and the picture suddenly becomes realistic.
Step III: This picture conveys powerful message, hope. When I look at this picture, I am overcome with sadness, but more importantly pride. After one of the United States most tragic events, three heroes are there to help the fallen. They are looking up at the focus of the picture. The rising of the flag is American pride and a symbol of hope that this is a nation that may never forget but will always stay strong. Out of all the confusion and heartache, the flag and that pride is what stands out the most.

Step 1: For this assignment I opted to choose a photograph that I randomly found perusing the internet. The photograph I chose is an up close picture of a bright, colorful flower that has an abnormally large water droplet on it. In the droplet there is crystal clear reflection of a dark barren tree with no leaves on it.
Step 2: The first thing I noticed in this photo was the contrast between how bright and ebullient the flower is compared to how melancholy and bleak the tree is in the background. The second thing that grabs my attention is how much clearer the tree can be seen through the water drop rather than just in the background. In the background the tree is very blurry and indistinct, however, when viewed though the water droplet the tree suddenly becomes crystal clear, with perfectly defined lines.
Step 3: When I view this photograph I feel confused, yet at the same time, a sense of acumen. The photographer enables the reader to feel this sensation by taking a photo of one tree that is clear and blurry all in the same picture. This photo also moved me greatly because of how something so depressing, the tree, and something so energetic, the flower, can be present at the same time. Even though this photograph is not popular or world renowned, it is still an astounding picture that plays with the viewers’ emotions.

Part1:
In this painting there is a ship sailing on the sea. This ship is very massive. The water is rough and splashing against the ship. In the distance you can see a town. The sky is starting to turn blue from its original color of red and orange.
Part 2:
When you first look at this painting your eyes are drawn to the flags blowing in the wind. You can see the ripples on each flag. Then they fall upon the background which consists of a dark red and orange. The colors seem to flow perfectly with the sails that are being blown wildly by the wind. The white triangular flag seems to point towards the town.
Part 3:
This picture tells a story. The story I believe it tells is one of this ship that has been out sailing for some time. During the ships voyage it encounter many hard times, which is shown by the red sky. The town in the background is their hometown. Now that they are close to home the hard times they have encountered seem to fade away like the red sky fades into blue.

Step I:In this watercolor painting, a man and a woman sitting down by the dock looking at the moon as it appears to be getting dark. The colors in the picture are different shades of blue that are faded. It is a basic and simple portrait that may have been painted just for a type of relaxation. This is because the picture isn't "busy" so to speak.

Step II:Lots of things strike my eye in this painting. One things what the subjects in the painting are wearing. The woman is wearing a long white dress and the man is wearing a white shirt and shorts. Also, the way they are positioned in the picture. The woman is sitting on part of the wood on the dock and the man is half laying down. They look very comfortable and are enjoying the scenery. The woman has long blonde flowing hair that really fits into the picture. The moon is a full moon. It sticks out really well because of the colors used in the picture. The man and woman in the picture appear to be looking at the moon.

Step III:When I look at this picture, it almost relaxes and calms my mind. It brings me back to times where I was at the beach at night, staring out into the ocean. It's a soothing picture, and because it is so simple, it makes you think back to a time when life was so simple. I think this picture doesn't necessarily have a story to tell, but is going to begin a story. The man and woman might have just gotten married, and are on their honey moon. Maybe it symbolizes the start of their new life together. Maybe the full moon symbolizes regeneration and degeneration of man. In marriage, there are going to be up's and down's. Human's need sorrow and suffering in order to experience happiness, joy and love. I could be completely wrong; This may not have any meaning at all. Either way, its a beautiful painting.

Step 1: In the photo I chose, a girl in a black and white dress sits on a green couch. On an intricate dresser sits a lamp and a record player. Books lean against the couch and a white fur rug lies on the floor.

Step 2: The eye immediately goes to the girl, but the couch and the dresser create a streamline through the frame. The décor of the room is warm and welcoming, and a little old-fashioned. With a mostly cabin-like feel of the wood walls, wooden dresser and mostly brown and white color theme, the green color of the couch adds a small pop of color to draw your attention to it.

Step 3: It tells the story of a girl waiting anxiously for a date, who should be arriving at any moment. She plays a record and sits in a dimly lit room to calm herself and ease her nerves. She represents the role all girls go through in that first date, with the butterfly nerves and trying to control it all with the simple sounds of music.

http://www.502ndpir.net/images/Eisenhower_d-day.jpg

Step 1: This photo is in black in white. It shows General Eisenhower talking to men of the paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division, who were part of the initial invasion. The sky appears to be light. The soldier’s uniforms also appear to be a lighter color while Eisenhower’s uniform is dark. Some of the soldiers have their headgear on while others do not.

Step 2: My eyes are first drawn to Eisenhower. He is the only one dressed completely in dark colors, he’s in the middle, and everyone in the background seems to be focused on him. Once I got past Eisenhower, my eyes started to go towards all of the faces of the soldiers in the background. Some look scared, some look extremely serious, and some have hardly any expression at all.

Step 3: This photograph makes me think of all of the things the men in World War II had to go through. All of these men stood there right before they took off listening to Eisenhower tell them that they did not have a great chance of surviving the initial attack. I can’t imagine the emotions of these men at this point and how they got through it. This photo also reminds of the movie Saving Private Ryan, another example of how terrible war is. This photo illustrates the courage these soldiers showed in the war

Claude Monet- The White Water Lilies

Part One
This is a landscape painting that uses mainly pale cool colors. The main focal point of the painting is a modest white bridge that transcends over a river covered in water lilies. Plush trees, some covered in violet colored flowers, and tall grasses make up the background of the picture. The main colors used are viridian and emerald with pops of violet and vermilion.

Part Two
This is an impressionistic painting. The painting has hardly any rigid details. The only structure with any sort of defined shape is the bridge, while the trees use only texture and contrasting colors to define them. The water lilies and flowers on the trees add a dramatic pop of color to the otherwise green painting. The colors and content of the painting create a sense of unity and balance throughout the piece.

Part Three
The White Water Lilies reminds me of being inside a dream. It is an absolutely mesmerizing painting that conjures up very pleasant emotions. There is no sense of pain, sorrow, or darkness, revealed in the painting. The work of art does however contain a sense of insouciance and tranquility. It seems as if inside this painting, no calamity or anguish could possibly occur.

step 1: In this photo I see Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics in the center of a huddle holding the championship trophy high in the air. He is surrounded by his team and they are all taking in the moment of the 17th Boston Celtics championship win.

step 2: In this picture, my eyes are instantly drawn to the gold shine of the trophy. Kevin Garnett, who is holding the trophy, also ties the picture together with him in a green shirt and almost everyone around him in white.

step 3: Looking at this picture reminds me of only one thing, joy. When watching this game live on television, I remember watching the clock tick down to zero, then everyone shouting and jumping for joy for our championship team. This teams accomplishment was only possible through extremely hard work and persistent teamwork and is a message of hope to all who look at it.

step 1: In this painting i see Mother thresea in the middle of the painting with her hands folded like she is praying, with a rosary wrapped around her hands. She is wearing a white vail and robe with a blue strip in three 3 lines going through the outline of her outfit. It also looks like she is sitting down. Behind and around her there are faces of children that are colored like a tanish-brown-gold.

step 2: When i look at this picture my eyes are drawn to mother theresea because of the bright colors of her clothes and how she is centered on the page surrounded by faces. Mother theresa in this picture has a much bigger proportion compared to the childrens faces and it also seems like mother thersea is a lot closer to you, the background which is the childrens faes. The emphasis is obviously mother thersea because the painter uses such dull colors for the background and then you see mother theresa in the front just shining because of her white and blue clothes. I believe there is a balance in this photo when it comes to color, there is extremely dull colors and then theres very vibrant colors which makes the picture so good.

step 3: Well when i look at this picture the story i see is the life of Mother Thresea. The faces of children in the background show what she put her life too, which was helping children and when she holds the rosary looking up into the heavens it also tells me how saintly a person Mother theresa must have been. It also tells me she helped many people throughout he life even when she was struggling herself, it was all for the children.

Step 1: In this painting, I see a bunch of large stars hanging by threads from the sky. There is a large house with only one light on in one of the rooms. This house is sitting in the middle of a large, grass field with a forest in the background. There is path leading to the house and street light on in front of the house. Leaning against the front of the house is a ladder that reaches all the way up to the roof. There is then another large ladder on the roof that reaches all the way up to the sky. In the front of the painting is a little girl, facing this whole scene.

Step 2: The thing that first catches my eye in this painting is the house, because it is sitting directly in the center and because there is a bright light on right in front of it. This light is the only bright object in the entire painting besides the stars. All of the colors in this painting are extremely dim and dull. The colors and objects appear soft. The lines of the ladder draw my eye directly up to the stars. From the stars, my eyes wander to the bottom of the painting to see what they are looking directly down on. That’s when I notice the little girl and the path that leads to the house. This setting looks extremely peaceful and almost like a dreamlike state.

Step 3: The theme or meaning of this painting could be the theme of setting goals, and reaching them. There is a little girl in the painting which represents humanity. All of the items in the painting symbolize the long path we take to reach our dreams and goals. This girl has to walk the path, climb the ladder against the house, and climb the even larger ladder to get to the sky and reach the stars. The stars represent our dreams. So when the girl reaches the stars, she has accomplished her dream. She could either take this long journey to reach the stars, or she could simply take the shorter distance into the house and give up on her dreams. The girl seems curious, scared, or undecided about which path she will take. The theme of this painting goes along with the old saying of “shooting for the stars”.

Step 1: The picture is in black and white. I first notice the man and the woman dead center in the picture. The man is holding the woman and kissing her. The picture also takes place in Time Square.

Step 2: Even though the picture is in only black and white the author uses different shades of black to draw you eye towards certain parts. The man kissing the woman along with other men in the back round are wearing sailor hats and uniforms. The woman that is kissing the man wears a white nurse uniform.

Step 3: This is the famous picture of the sailor and nurse kissing in Time Square in New York after the long awaited victory over Japan. The man shares a passionate kiss with the woman who he probably has not seen in a while. They both returned from serving our country and are ready to celebrate a great victory.

part 1: In this photograph, there are eleven men sitting on a beam over a city in the background. The men are all talking to one another. The picture is in black and white with gray tones.

part 2: My eye is specifically drawn to the middle of the photograph. This is where the beam is located. I specifically look at the men sitting on the beam, with no harnesses or support to catch them if they fall. The beam seems to split the picture in half. As I look closer in the photograph, I notice on the bottom half there is a city, and on the top half there are mountains. The darkness of the beam is in contrast with the men and the surrounding area. There is also a string and pulley in the bottom right hand of the photograph, partially blocking the few of some of the men. The feet of the men are all dangling over the beam as they sit on it.

part 3: Looking at this picture makes me feel a sense of accomplishment for the men. It also makes me feel like the men are in a tough time in their lives, maybe the Depression. They look like they are taking a break from a tough day at work, and sharing stories and lunch with one another. I personally think the mountains in the background and the city in the foreground symbolizes how far our country has come to become industrialized. It started out as barren land but eventually has been built up through hard work and perseverance.

I chose a painting from Leonid Afremov. In the painting there is a man and a woman walking down a path. To the right of them there is a river or a lake and to the left of them there is a line of trees lighted by streetlights. It is night time or near night time and it is very colorful.
The lines in the painting draw my eyes from the left side of the painting to the right side of the painting. The value of the painting goes from the lightness of the orange and red streetlights to the darkness of the sky, water, and grass. Most of the shapes in this painting are organic because there is a lot of nature in the painting. The forms in the painting are trees, streetlights, people, a path, and water. There are spaces in between the objects. This makes us view the painting as if it were 3-D. There is a lot of color in this. The left side for the most part has all the brighter colors and the right side for the most part has all of the darker colors. The painting is balanced into three sections: the trees and streetlights, the path and the couple, and the water.
The image or story that comes to mind when I look at this painting is that it is just a couple walking under an umbrella through the park at or near night time while it is wet and raining outside.

step 1:
I see a girl probably twelve or thirteen staring at herself in the mirror. She is touching her chin as she stares at herself looking sad. The room is darker and she is sitting on a tiny stool. There is a baby doll lying on the ground along with a hair brush, comb, and lipstick. She is wearing a simple white dress. The mirror is rather large and her whole body is shown. The mirror is propped up on a chair.

step 2:
The girl looks rather sad, she seems unsure. On her lap lays a picture of an older woman that looks some what similar to the young girl. The preteen looks very uncomfortable and insecure. She looks to be analyzing herself to the piture that lays on her lap.

step 3:
In this picture I see a preteen not a child but not yet a woman. She is unsure what she is because on the ground lays a baby doll, a child toy, and lipstick, a woman’s necessity. She is comparing herself to the woman in a picture who I feel is probably famous. The young girl wants to look like her. The girl is unsure who she is and who she wants to be. Her innocence is present as she looks so afraid staring at herself. She is struggling deciding who she is.

Picture of firefighters raising flag at Ground Zero.

step 1:
In this photo I see three firefighters an American flag. The men are covered in dust and ash, appearing exhausted. The picture was taken at the tragic scene of the destruction of the World Trade Centers eight years ago.

step 2:
The photo draws my attention the the vivid colors of the flag drifting in front of the remains of the twin towers. The colors in the photo are very bland, so the red, white, and blue of the flag stick out tremendously.

step 3:
To me, this image reminds me of the picture of the soldiers raising the American flag after the battle at Iwo Jima. This sort of inspirational picture makes me feel extremely patriotic. Three worn out firefighters raise the flag, a symbol the entire world could identify with the great freedom and opportunity offered by America for centuries.

Photograph of white horse and apple

I: In this photo there is a hand with a white glove on feeding a bright, red apple to a white horse.

II: My eye is drawn to the bright, red apple in the person’s hand. The color really attracts me. I like the contrast between the white horse and glove and the red apple. It is the brightest thing in the picture and really sticks out against the white. The space around the horse and hand, which is an indoor arena, is very blurry. This is to keep your focus on the horse, hand and apple rather than what’s behind them. One thing I also notice is the horse’s muzzle. It is a white horse, but his muzzle gradually turns dark gray. The horse’s white mane appears to be very silky.

III: I really like this picture and it makes me feel warm. When doing this journal I decided I wanted to do a horse picture because that’s what I’m passionate about and it’s what I know. I think this photograph shows the bond between horse and rider. So I really appreciate this photo because I know what that bond is like. This picture also shows the beauty of horses. The horse’s mane is gorgeous.

In this painting I see a restaurant/bar on a corner the name of the restaurant/bar is Phillies. Inside of this restaurant there are four people, the bartender an elderly looking man dressed in a white folded hat and all white clothes including a white apron. The second person is the lady in the red dress, she is a middle aged woman with red hair, she looks like she smokes, and she is painted with a nonchalant look. Next is a man wearing a grey old style detective looking hat and he has on a blue shirt and tie combination with a blue suit coat, the man look middle aged like the woman. The last man look almost like the third, but you can’t see his face and he is sitting on the opposite side of the first man and the lady. The restaurant itself has a yellow interior, seven brown stools on one side of a brown triangular counter. The outside is green and it seems dark outside. When I look at the picture the first thing I notice is the woman in her bright red dress and the elderly man in the middle, they stand out, because unlike other two men and the outside streets which have darker colors these two like the restaurant’s interior are covered in bright distinctive colors. The three people on the right are also separated from the last man by a significant amount of space. The painting shows shadow and light as if it was a real room and not just a painting. From the picture you can tell that the first man and the lady know each other, while the second man you don’t see his face which kind of adds to the believe that he is kind of just another stranger. This painting tell a story of an older time in its simplicity, and how that was the normal for that time. It makes you think that if you were from that time you could walk on a corner and see something like that. What makes this painting stand out is the fact that it really doesn’t stand out. There isn’t something specifically that the artist wants to stick out differently than anything else. The painting creates a sense of peace and balance.

The painting I chose shows a woman and her dog in a boat. The woman is wearing a bright white dress and a hat. She has a yellow blanket surrounding her while the rest of the scenery is green. A small arrangement of purple, white, and yellow flowers sits in front of the woman on the seat of the boat. The painter draws your eyes to the woman in the boat by making her so much brighter than everything around her. The color of her dress makes her stand out causing you to notice her before you see anything else. She is also the largest thing on the painting and the closet image to our view. All of this shows that the painter wanted to put a lot of emphasis on the woman. The rest of the colors blend together to make a nice background, but the other images are not interesting to our eye. This painting gives me a feeling of peace and tranquility. I feel that it also tells you that you can stand out. The woman looks calm and collected on her boat make a bold statement.

step2: my eyes are first drawn to her face. her expression is mostly calm but also a little timid.her face is the only part that isn't shadowed. she is also wearing a pearl earring that doesn't seem to go with her otherwise bland outfit.
step3: this picture makes me wonder about the girls background and why she has a portrait. she looks to under-dressed and plain to have such an expensive earring. More than anything, this picture makes me curious and causes me to imagine her life story.

The Singing Butler
Step 1: In this picture I see a couple dancing and a man holding an umbrella. There is a tan ground with shadows reflecting on it. The sky is a dark blue with white clouds that come down to the horizon.

Step 2: My eyes are drawn to the man with an umbrella, which I assume by the way he is dressed is the butler. It seems like he holding the umbrella up for the wealthier couple to protect them from the dark sky. The couple dancing is dressed much wealthier than the man. The woman seems to be the focus of the picture because the color of her dress is much brighter than every other color present in the picture. The other colors are all dark shades.

step 3: I feel that this picture is suppose to refect the importance of class in an old time period. The couple is happy and in love, not even noticing the man who is holding the umbrella for them. The butler is serving the couple and protecting them, and is all alone.

Step 1: I chose a photograph of a lightning bolt racing acroos the sky. The sky is a pinkish purple because of the visiable sunset that is occuring. All of this is taking place over some body of water, most likely a river. The water gives off a remarkable reflection.
Step 2: My eyes are immediatly drawn to the horizon. The bright orange color of the sky and the white lightning also stand out. The shape of the lightning is also appealing. The way it zig-zags accross the sky; it makes my eyes trace it to the end.
Step 3: This picture is just amazing to me. I've always loved to watch lightning storms and sunsets so having them both occure at the same time is truly breath taking. The vibrant pink and orange of the sky and then hot white lightning straking accross it; it's beautiful. After studying this picture more I noticed ripples of what appear to be rain drops falling on the water. I feel like the artist was trying to say something in this photo and that was that although things appear to be beautful, they can turn bad in the blink of an eye ( the ammount of time a lightning bolt flashs).

In this photo, I see a little boy and a little girl walking out of a dark, cave-like, leafy area and into a lighter forest-like area that seems to be illuminated with sunlight. It looks like they are holding hands. When I first looked at this picture, my eyes were “guided” directly towards the boy and the girl—I was not focused on one of them more than the other because they are “connected” either by holding hands or because of their close proximity… I can’t tell exactly. After I noticed the two kids, I noticed the background, where they were, and the contrast in the light from where they were coming from and where they were going. I think the kind of circular “hole” in the leaves that allows you to see the kids is a small enough space to make them the main focus in this photo—if the space was much bigger, there would be too much other stuff to get distracted by and if it was any smaller, you wouldn’t be able to make out their shapes as clearly. Because this is black and white, one can’t really tell what season it is or what color the leaves are, but I think that is because the artist wants you to notice more the contrast between the two areas rather than the colors that would be there if this was shot in color. Also, this photo is balanced because it has the same amount of foliage on either side of the main focus and there is enough light on either side of the two kids that the darkness/light does not seem unbalanced. For me, this photograph symbolizes the idea of moving from one part of/chapter of one’s life to another. I think the girl and the boy are, for each other, literally supposed to be the ones they can trust and “hold hands with” throughout their lives. It seems like the dark area could symbolize a hard time that they got through together and walking into the light could symbolize a better change/life up ahead. The main message in this photo for me is that of hope. Basically, there’s a light at the end of the (dark) tunnel...or forest.

Step 1: This picture was taken by Lewis Hine. The picture is black and white. I see a young girl. She is the only person in the picture and is dressed as if she lived in the early 20th century. She is looking out a window. She appears to be underground and a train is moving behind her. There isn’t a lot of room between her and the train.

Step 2: The young girl is the only thing in the photograph that is completely in focus which causes my eye to be instinctively focused on her. Also the rule of thirds is used, meaning the girl positioned in one of the three main areas that our eyes naturally focus on. The train behind her is moving cause that aspect to be very blurry. The use of strong horizontal lines in the picture is apparent from the ground to the train to the ceiling. The lighting is very important in the picture because the girl is underground and the light coming from the window allows you to see what is happening.

Step 3: This picture peaked my interest because it pulls my emotions when I look not only at it but also into it. The use of a young girl represents vulnerability and innocence. She is alone as the train passes behind her which represents loneliness as the world passes her by. She is looking out a window with a look of sadness and that window with light flowing through symbolizes hope for a brighter future. It symbolizes freedom and her potential to get to higher ground.

Step 1- In this painting I see an old small Tuscan villa. The house is surrounded with a beautiful landscape of trees, flowers, and bushes. The archway of the house provides a beautiful view of sailboats, deep blue water, and a blue- light gray sky. The colors of the flowers, bushes, trees etc… blend with one another. The flowers have hints of red, green, and yellow color as do the trees. The cream -colored façade of the house enhances the overall painting and setting.

Step 2- My eyes focus mainly upon what is behind the archway. This gives us a better feel and understanding of the setting which is along the docks. My eyes are drawn to the open window and flowing window curtain. It gives a sense of mystery to the photo. I also focus on the large tree that gracefully covers the top of the house. What intrigues me about this painting is how the artist blends each object with different colors. This gives it a sort of “blurry affect” which adds to the texture and feeling of peacefulness.

Step 3- This photo gives me a sense of peace and happiness. I imagine myself in a small town in Italy near the water. I can picture young children running around and a mother calling to them from the open window. It also reminds me of a perfect summer day when a cloud slightly covers the sun, but does not totally eliminate the sunlight. The trees partially shade the house while the sun hits directly on the window and right side of the house. This adds to the tranquility of the painting.

http://www.paintingsite.net/images/renaissance_history_the-birth-of-venus.jpg

Part 1
In this painting there are 2 angels, a naked woman, and another woman holding a blanket. The painting has very subtle colors yet each person and object are draw with exquisiteness. The painting is very calm as Venus stands there naked on the sea shell. The one perticularly odd thing i find is that Venus's neck is abnormally long.

Part 2
The one object that stands out the most is the orange/pink blanket that is trying to be draped upon Venus as she emerges from the water. Venus is naked as she emerges so the woman is trying to cover her with the blanket. There are pink roses falling down from the angels. One of the angels is blowing Venus to shore. The painting also looks like the spring season is arriving when Venus is stepping onto land.

Part 3
I enjoy the painting a great deal. It brings life to the objects surrounding Venus as she emerges from the water. I believe that her hand on her heart symbolizes love and somewhat mother nature as there is the season of spring, tree's and the ocean surrounding her, and her nakedness symbolizing purity which relates to Adam and Eve.

Step 1: This is a photo of a sailor kissing a nurse. There are many people in the street. It also looks like they are in New York City. It is a very old picture. It is in black and white. The people in the streets all look very happy.

Step 2: When I first look at the picture, I am instantly drawn to the to the sailor and nurse. This photo is cleary directed at them. The background is surrounded with many other people in back of them. They have much space around them with people staring on smiling. The black and white blends all of the objects in the picture together.

Step 3: This picture makes me feel happy. It looks like that all of these sailors have come back from war. They are in the streets celebrating. There is actually a story about this picture. The sailor came back from World War II and when they were celebrating in the streets, he picked the first girl he saw and kissed her. This picture also makes me think about how the soliders now are sacrificing their lives for us. I am very grateful that they are protecting our country.

Step 1: There are four people in this photograph. The main person is a woman who looks to be in her forties. She is sitting down, probably on a step, leaning her chin on one hand and staring out into the distance. On either side of her is a child leaning on her shoulders and facing away from the picture. It is hard to tell the gender of the children. There is also a baby that is barely visible, sleeping in the mother’s lap. All four of them are dressed in worn, ratty clothing. The woman, probably the children’s mother, looks very tired and worn out.
Step 2: Automatically, my eyes are drawn to the woman’s sad, tired eyes. She looks helpless and over-worked. However, there is a great deal of strength and determination in her eyes to pull through the Great Depression which is when this photo was taken. Another indication that the woman is over-worked and exhausted is the deep wrinkles in her forehead and around her eyes. The children lean in on her shoulders looking for comfort and reassurance that everything will be alright. The mother, however, feels just as helpless and cannot offer this comfort. They lean on their mother’s shoulders for support just as the weight for the family’s survival is also placed on the shoulders of the woman.
Step 3: This is a very famous photograph from the great Depression. This woman has stood as an icon of not only this era but also of many issues our country has faced then and now. Depending on the viewer, the woman could be a symbol of many different things. She could be a symbol of the affects of government agencies, of the role of the mother in the family, of a family in the Great Depression suffering through poverty, or of the determination of the migrant workers to survive. When looking at this photograph, I personally see this woman as the backbone of the family. I see her as being determined to keep this family together however in this photograph I think her courage is fading and she is beginning to become confused and helpless. This photograph intrigues me because I want to know what she is thinking about as she is staring out into the barren land. I also admire her for her courage because I don’t know if I could keep myself together like she has through such terrible times.

Picture of two sisters sitting together in a dance studio:

Step 1: In this photo, there are two young girls in ballerina costumes sitting on the floor of what appears to be a ballet studio. The older of the two girls is sitting behind the younger girl and has her arms somewhat supporting the younger girl. The two girls look very similar, with the same hair and eye color. They appear to be sisters.

Step 2: In this photo, the attention is made to be on the younger girl. The eye is drawn to her when first looking at the photograph. In fact, her wings appear to be even halfway blocking view of the older girl behind her. Although the two girls have on similar dancing costumes, the younger one is the only one with wings on. This could simply be because their costumes were different, or because the photographer wants more attention to be drawn towards her.

Step 3: I think this picture is meant to give a sense of security. The two girls appear to be sisters and are both in a dance studio. When the younger sister started dancing, she was most likely nervous and timid, however, having her older sister there to help her probably gave her more of a sense of security. The older sister appears to be supporting the sister in this picture even when they are simply sitting together.

[Nighthawks by Edward Hopper]
Step 1: There are four people inside of a diner. One of which seems to be the bartender. There is variation of shading, some of the picture seems very dark while the other is lit up. The colors used are yellow, red, green, and white.
Step 2: My eyes are immediately drawn to inside of the diner because of the use of light. The yellow door especially catches my eye. There are some harsher (square shapes) used as well as some softer (smooth edged) objects used. It is not very balanced, the right side of the picture appears much "heavier" than the left and there is a lot of emphasis on the people inside of the diner. The lack of light outside of the diner is what gives this emphasis.
Step 3: It seems like a very common photograph. The people in it are doing nothing special or out of the ordinary. It gives the feeling that this is through the eyes of someone who may be watching them from outside of the diner. The people in the photograph seem either sad or tired. It gives me fear that someone is watching them and waiting for them to leave. The fact that the diner is not crowded and it is pitch black out shows that it is very late at night. The diner could possibly be close to the closing time of the diner. To me the photograph does not give off a very positive feeling.

I Wanna Go by Ron Burns

Step I: In this picture I see three colorful dogs, painted with many bright colors of the rainbow. Also the car is a very bright green color, and the sky is a very bright blue color.
Step II: In this picture my eyes are automatically drawn to the three dogs in the car mostly because they are so bright and colorful.. There painted with colors that dogs aren’t actually in real life. The dogs tongue is extra large as well. Also the dogs are so close together in the car, and outside of the care seems to be a wide open sky. The texture of the dogs is somewhat trippy to the eyes.
Step III: The story that this picture tells me is that its three happy, energized, and excited dogs. I think the painting is titled I Wanna Go because the dogs probably jumped in the car wanting to go where ever the person whose car it is is going. Its so bright to show how much energy is going on since the dogs are so happy and excited.

Picture: People dancing

1. In this photo i see two people dancing on a beach and another man dancing by himself underneath an umbrella. The color in this picture includes greyish, white fluffy clouds, faded blue in the background and a light yellow sand that the dancers and dancing on. The dancers have pale skin and dark brown hair.
2. The first person i notice in this picture is the woman in red dress because the red stands out the most compared to the other pastel colors. The man in the photo with the umbrella is further away from the water and the man and woman dancing are closer to the water.
3. This photo shows happiness and peace. The two people dancing seem to be in love and on the beach on a beautiful day. This picture shows that the man with the umbrella is content dancing alone and his happy with his own life.

Step 1: I chose the famous painting Narcissus by Caravaggio. This is obviously an older picture from possibly renaissance era of a man who is looking at his reflection in a pond. The dress he is wearing suggests he is from a high status family.
Step 2: The way he is positioned next to the pond shows his confidence in his looks. He isn’t slumped over or slouchy and the expression on his face also shows how self-loathing he really is. When I look at this picture I really focus on the bone structure of his broad shoulders and his knees. I think the artist did this on purpose to draw your eye away from the cast shadow in the pond. After looking closer into the picture you begin to notice the shadow. I think this is important for the artist to do because it kind of tells a story and I feel the strong contrast makes the meaning more subtle.
Step 3: The story of Caravaggio shows a man who is a bit of a narcissist. He sees his face in a pond and falls in love with himself. When he goes in to kiss his reflection he falls in and drowns. To me this picture tells the story on its own. It could have been any man or woman looking at his or herself and you would be able decipher the same meaning. When you look at the picture on the mans face you can tell he is in love with himself. I mean who really sits by a pond and stares at themselves anyway? I guess you would have to be a narcissist to do something like that.

Step I: In this picture, there is a boy looking up at the clouds and the birds. The sky changes from a dark blue to a light blue in the distance, while the only other dominant colors in the picture are black and white. The boy and the birds also look like silhouettes in this photo. The photo displays an ordinary occurrence but the colors and shapes in the picture are what make it extraordinary.
Step II:The fact that the boy is looking up and that the picture goes from being dark at the bottom to being light at the top is a good symbolization of hope. This hope could be literally for the boy, or for the person looking at the photograph. Your eye also gets really drawn toward the light in the middle of the sky that is right in the middle of the picture. This was probably done to bolster the idea or theme of the picture to be hope and inspiration. Step III: When I look at this picture, it has a very dramatic impact on me. I did not really understand it at first, but after about fie minutes or so of analyzing the picture I began to see all the subtle things the artist did to make this ordinary occurrence a very special picture. I was actually in a very bad mood when we started this assignment, and this picture really helped to cheer me up. This picture tells me that “things will get better” and to “never stop believing in anything or anyone.”

step 1: in this photo i see a street and the word SLOW is written in the middle because it is a very small tight squeeze road and also its between buildings. The photo is in black and white so there is pretty much all dark except for the bulding and the word on the street are white.
step 2: My eyes are defintely drawn right towards the huge SLOW written in the middle of the road and of course the beauty of the picture and how intricate it is. Also it has some blur effect to it to add some emotion almost like someone is in motion going down the street as they are taking the picture. Also there is a very long road so mabye there could be something to be revealed at the end of the road? something just to throw in that i noticed.
step 3: Since the picture is in black and white it makes you have a sort of disheartening feeling as you view it. The long road and the huge slow almost makes it seem as life always moves like that and thats defintely something to not look forwards too, also the long road makes you feel as if there is obsticles and long roads to overcome before you achieve what you want. Personally i can see alot of things in the photo even though there isnt much depth to it.

third picture down: Phillies bar

step 1: in this picture i see four people at a bar. three are men, and one is a girl. one of the three men is a bartender and the other two are customers. there are lots of colors in this picture: yellow, red, green, black, white, and brown. inside the bar it is bright with lights but out in the street it looks to be night. the store across the street is empty. the streets are empty as well.

step 2: it looks like it is night outside because the bright shading projecting from the bar's bright lights on the inside. the architecture of the bar portrays the time era it was attempting to capture with the rounded edges. the way the artist put lighter shading on the windows of the building across the street also insinuates the time of day that maybe the sun is starting to break. the store across the street looks closed and empty from the blackness.

step 3: the story i think the painting is trying to portray is the depression. i have come up with this conclusion because of the architecture of the building. also the way the characters are dressed. the men are wearing hats and the girls hair has a style of the 1920s. i also think this is the depression because the people are drinking late at night. all of the characters are well dressed so they can still afford drinks but i feel like they need to get away from life for a second.

I chose to use one of Gregory Alexanders works of art entitled "Little Venice Mykonos Greece." It is a watercolor painting which uses pasty and flamboyant colors to construct a beautiful building on the water. My eyes were instantly drawn to what looks almost like a canoe of some sort to the left of the building. It may be part of the building, but I can't tell for sure. It looks like somewhere one would go to escape from the normal annoyances of everyday life. I would love to escape to this place to say the least. It is a beautiful work of art.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e4/Ferdinand_Hodler_005.jpg

I chose the painting "The Night" by the Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler.

step 1: This painting shows seven nude figures covered by dark sheets laying on a stone surface in what appears to be some some sort of desolate land in the middle of the night. Six of these seven seem to be in a peaceful sleep while the other in the middle is overcome with surprise and fear at the sight of what looks to be another figure rising under his blanket. The colors used in the painting are generally stark and cold but the actual figures are accented with subtle hot colors for emphasis.

step 2: At a slight glance, this painting may just seem to be a figure study but upon a real look at it it takes upon a whole new meaning. Your eyes sort of wonder when you first see the painting, trying to find some irregularity, scanning the pale bodies and the indigo blankets but once you realize the protruding figure underneath the blanket in the center you stare at it and its victim as if there are no other aspects to the painting.

step 3: No matter how many times I look at this painting, it never fails to send a shiver down my spine. It touched on the undeniable fear of the dark and unknown, especially before, during or after sleep, that is shared by nearly all human beings.

http://cndls.georgetown.edu/applications/posterTool/data/users/9-11_firefighters_w_flag.jpg

step 1: In this photo I see three firefighters raising an American Flag. There is rubble and debris surrounding them and the background is foggy with dust. It is sunny outside and the firefighters have dirt covered saddened faces.

step 2: My eyes are drawn directly to the American Flag. The flag is the only object with bright color in this photograph, it "pops" as I look at the picture. The sky blends into the ground with the tan/ brown color they both possess. The other thing that stands out is the blue jackets the firefighters have on. The man on the left seems to be closer in the frame than the two other men, so my eyes seem to focus on him as I look at the picture. The firefighter behind the flag pole is partly covered by the flag, making him fade into the background.

step 3: This picture makes me think of sadness, along with patriotism. This is a famous photograph after the terrorist attack on September 11th, and when I look at it, I get mixed emotions. I become disheartened when I think of the many lives that were taken on that day. However, this picture shows the unity of America and how we stand strong even when we've been hit with tragedy.

http://i.thisislondon.co.uk/i/pix/2009/02/steelworkers1602_415x275.jpg

Part I
I see young, hard-working men taking a lunch break dangling out on a steel ledge. They have had a rough day working and they are enjoying the company of each having some lunch. They are all dressed in overalls, baggy button-down shirts, and hats.

Part II
What strikes me in this picture is the height these men are working are at. The city of New York looks
minuscule below. Yet, the steel workers are relaxed and comfortable. I also notice that these men have smiles on their faces and are engaging in conversation with their neighbors. They are having a good time sharing a light, reading the paper, or discussing some issue together.

Part III
This picture makes me think about the time period it was taken. I looks to have been taken during the 1930's or so. Perhaps it is during the Great Depression and these men will do just about any job to provide for their families. That time period was a significant mark in American history. They are many photographs and painting of that time showing poverty and hunger. However, this picture shows a side not many have seen. Despite those tough times, people can find comfort in others and work together to get through such sorrows.

This picture of Times Square at night is great for description because there is so much going on in it. I think the colors are the most important feature of this photograph. All of the bright signs are the first things that catch my eye. I notice the bright yellow “M” of McDonald’s and the headlights of the taxis. If you look closer at the photo, you see the mass of people crowded on the sidewalk. As you go further down the street, the bright signs start to blur. The signs really stand out against the night sky and they all have so many different colors in them. I also notice the people walking on the crosswalk. It’s very ordinary and shows movement in the picture. The busyness of the photo makes the city come alive. Of course, I’m drawn to the familiar McDonald’s sign like most other teenagers. After that, is when I notice the Broadway signs. The photo makes me happy because I love being surrounded by lots and lots of people and New York City is one of my favorite places. The picture also makes me feel a sense of energy because so much is going on. The movement of the picture also makes it ordinary and I could easily place myself in the scene.

The picture I chose was shot by renowned photographer Mary Ellen Mark. The picture is shot in black and white, which makes the photo stand out more and provide a more powerful message. The first two places my eye is drawn to is the girl sitting down in the pool. Her expression makes me ponder what is going through her mind as her picture is being taken. The second place that my eyes shoot to is the cigarette smoke that the nine year old girl is blowing out of her mouth like she’s been smoking since birth. The camera is focused directly on the two young girls with their emotions popping out; a young girl around 7 who looks melancholy and confused, while the nine year looks as if she has experienced it all and doesn’t have a care in the world. The setting of the shot looks like an under priviledged neighborhood like the girls do not have much money. The pool their in appears to be old and cheap and their swim suits adds to their disheveled look. When I first studied the photograph, I thought of the two problems of teenagers in the world: obesity and smoking. Teenagers in this day and age make poor decisions and Mary Ellen Mark captured that idea within this picture, however, the subjects are much younger, emphasizing how society is changing. Overall, this photo to me is fantastic and speaks to me while making me question the decisions that I make.

Step 1: In this photo I see three firemen raising the American flag on a crooked flag pole amongst rubble. Color in the photo is slightly hazy in the foreground and very hazy in the background.
Step 2: My eyes are immediately drawn to the flag in the center of the photo. The three firemen are looking directly at it and it is centered in the photo which really draws my attention to it. The colors of the flag really stand out from the gray background and the firefighters covered in gray dust. Though the flag is not proportionally large compared to the rest of the picture, its color, center, and attention the firefighters are giving it draws you directly to it.
Step 3: This story tells a story of resilience and patriotism to me. Its showing the US's willingness to rebuild and right in the midst of tragedy. It also brings to mind patriotism to me because of its extreme resemblance of Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, 1945, by Joe Rosenthal which is a very famous photograph from WW2. This photo is a very powerful photograph that will go down in history.

Toxicity Inspector by Shepard Fairey

Step I: I see a man who is painted yellow, testing the toxicity of a healthy red rose. The entire picture is in fact red and yellow. The man is wearing a gas mask and the word “inspector” written on his shirt.

Step II: The artist used lines radiating from the rose to draw your eye to it. The man in the picture is threatening, a bit frightening, and very authoritative. The rose, with the light coming off of it seems almost sacred.

Step III: This picture gives me a sense of awe; It’s one of the best paintings I have ever seen. The picture seems to be joking about the overly cautious nature of our society.

oil painting of a variation of different colored flowers:

step 1: In this photo I see different colored flowers. Some bright orange, some cream with hints of yellow and magenta, some blue and white, etc. The oil in this painting is thick which gives it lots of texture.
step 2:My eyes are immediately drawn to the differentiation in texture of each flower. The daisy has less texture than the rose, which is full of ridges and strokes. It looks like the artist did this painting quickly but with lots of technique.
step 3:Even thought there are many bright colors and different textures this picture makes me feel calm. I think that because there is so much going on this picture that would other wise be maybe-not-so-interesting, due to the artists flare, it makes you explicate it and notice things about about flowers that maybe you would not have before. It reminds me of a patch of wildflowers in a field- the kind that grow freely but look as if they are perfectly tended to.

I chose a picture of downtown New York City.

Step 1. In this photo i see the tall skyscrapers and the people going about their days. Some are tourists and others live and work in the city. The color choice is great. The photo was taken during the evening and the sun is setting in the sky. The lights are bright and light up the sky.

Step 2. My eyes are drawn to the bright colors and the tall buildings. The buildings stand out and are massive. I notice the difference in the buildings, some are taller than others. The picture is an overview of the city in the evening with the tall buildings and city life.

Step 3. The photo made me feel that the city is very large and you never know what you will see while living in a city as New York. It makes me feel that the city would be a great place to live and makes the town i live in now seem like nothing. That is how i felt about the photo.

Picture of a little boy leaning on a wall:

Step I
When looking at this picture you see a young boy of color. He has on a baggy hoody and sweat pants, worn out black shoes, an afro, and he is giving the peace sign. His shirt and hoody are both labeled with navy. The boy is leaning on a brick wall and looking straight into the camera. The photograph is in black and white and there is no color in it at all.

Step II
When looking at this photo the first thing that I am drawn to is the face of the boy. The way he is looking curiously through the peace sign gives the photo a deeper meaning and sense of feeling than the photo it self. The way the boy is leaning on the wall gives it a realistic effect of relaxation and something you would commonly see yet artistic in its own way. Based on what he is wearing I also get a sense of feeling about the condition of which he lives. The nappy afro, the baggy clothes and the worn out shoes all portray to me that the boy lives in poverty.

Step III
The story that this painting portrays to me is a boy that is in a bad way in a bad place seeking peace and love and closure. His facial expression and the way he leans away from the camera show, in my opinion, fear, and a need for peace. His condition is also shown through what he is wearing and the location that he is at.

Melting Clocks-Salvador Dali

1. I see a vast plain. I see a piece of cloth with a clock rested on top of it. I see a horizon line that leads to the water with a cliff hovering upon it. I see a table with two clocks and a tree balanced on it. One clock is orange and has ants covering it up. Another clock is dangling from the tree branch. Then in the far left there is a platform. The colors are yellow, brown, gray, orange, blue, and black.

2. My eyes are drawn back to the clear distant horizon line. And also, the sadden melting clocks of course. There are more objects on the left, so my eye quickly catches the front left side more. Although, Dali greatly balances the painting from left to right and from front to back which concludes no empty space. Everything is balanced with each other. There is also great balances of perspectives, dark and vibrant colors, textures, objects, and also moods. Dali definitely focuses on the aspects of contour, hard vs. swift, wispy, flowing lines. He emphasizes the opposites but at the same time truly harmonizes the painting. This is a surrealism painting.

3. This painting definitely makes me feel dream-like. It's a depressing painting because of the setting and the idea of melting clocks. The story/message that reflects is the idea of time. The clocks symbolize the irrelevance of time. That with time, our world can lead to a state of bleakness and emptiness and not compassion. For background thought, Dali likes to paint about death. So this means if we are too occupied with time (as the ants are forcefully attacking the orange clock) we miss all the good and positive things in life. And we breeze buy without seeing the beauty. And as we die, not only our body dies, but our soul as well. He painted a warning message to us all on how to live life in one of his famous awestruck paintings.

I. In this picture I just see four soldiers holding up the American flag. They look like they are standing over destroyed land and a completely wore torn area. It’s a black and white picture, which shows that it is an old picture from WWII. It looks as if they are going to stick it into the ground to symbolize a victory.
II. My eyes are immediately drawn to the flag because it stands as a symbol of America. It is in the middle of being blown so it’s not just showing fully out flatly. In my opinion this kind of shows that it was a struggle in the picture. The soldiers look tired and weak and they have to have all of them help each other put the flag up. The background is very lain and deserted, this puts all the attention onto the flag and the soldiers in the middle of the picture. There is also movement in this picture, you know that the men are moving to the right and the flag seems to be blowing a little to the right as well. There is a sense of unity because they are all working together for a cause that is symbolized by the flag.
III. This picture makes me feel that I should be more appreciative for what I have. People go out and work hard and fight together so that I may live a good life and have a chance at the American dream. The flag represents many things, not just America itself but the people and strength America has. This picture makes me want to work harder myself, because if people are willing to fight for this country, I should not be lazy and waste away the opportunity I have been given to live in it.

In this picture, I see a man wearing a suit. His tie is undone is sloppy. The man is playing the guitar. There’s a lit cigarette between the strings on the end of his guitar, with smoke coming off of it. His hair is long and messy and he has facial hair. The picture is dark and their isn’t much color.
A couple things draw my attention when I first look at the picture. One of the first things I looked at was the cigarette at the end of the guitar, because I don’t see that too often. Another thing that I noticed is the look on his face. He looks unhappy or enthralled. The shading on the picture is dark and not colorful, giving the picture a dark mood.
This picture reminds me of someone that’s having a really tough time in his life. He looks like a struggling musician, but very talented. I can picture people in a bar type of place watching him play. He’s playing a really smooth and slow song, one that he can solo over, and everyone is impressed with him. I think the cigarette symbolizes his struggles, as it is something that helps relax and take a deep breath.

Step 1: In this painting, you see the crisp blue ocean waves against the Sooner in the harbor. Also the white diaphanous clouds in the sky stand out against the baby blue.

Step II: When you look at this painting you are immediatly drawn to the giant sooners in the middle of the harbor. It represents a perfect day to sail so you see the tiny sailboats in between all the bigger boats.

Step III: This portrait reminds me of when I lived in Maine. The beautiful days in the harbor and the parks near there represent my childhood. We have this portrait hanging in our house and it is one of my favorites.

Part I: This painting is of a little girl. She looks about seven years old. She has long, curly red hair with a blue bow in it. She has very pale skin with rosy cheeks. She is wearing raggedy blue and white clothes. The little girl is sitting down and knitting a red sock.

Part II: When I first looked at the picture, my eyes were drawn immediately to the girl’s hands. Her eyes are completely focused and pointing down to her hands. Her hands are petite, and she’s holding the knitting needles very carefully. She has some yarn wrapped around her pinky finger, which shows she has some sort of strategy to knitting. The red color of the yarn and the royal blue ribbon stand out the most in the picture also draw my attention because the other colors used are all dull. The little girl stands out in front of the dark background because of her pale skin and white sleeves.

Part III: This painting reminds me of my grandmother. She is always knitting because she says that it is very relaxing and soothing. The little girl in the painting looks very peaceful. I think that even though she is among darkness, she is in her happy place because she is concentrated on her knitting.

Part 1: I see the Beatles walking across the road. All of them are in casual suits. As they walk they are in unisine. Its portrays to be a bright and beautiful day out. Big green trees line the road.

Part 2: What obviously pops out of the picture are the Beatles themselves. They are simply just walking across the road with very little expression on their faces. But something about it intrigues you they bring a presence to the picture. I thinks its because they were such an iconic band. Its so simple from the way they dress to just the image of the road. Even though it seems simple its a very famous painting known to many.

Part 3: The picture just makes you think of every Beatles song that you love and it makes you want to sing it out loud. What makes the picture so rememberable is it was the last cover page for their last album. I think the cover was perfect to be the last one we ever saw. Something about it made everything come together as a whole a perfect way to end with the Beatles. It was a peaceful and joyful end to the great music of the Beatles. It was definetly one of the best Beatles albums there was not a single bad song. The cover definetly put its mark on history.
