The Gift of the Magi (6th & final journal)

clipped from www.youtube.com
The last paragraph of O. Henry's classic Christmas tale says it all. Hopefully, you realize the author's irony. O. Henry's story is NOT uneventful, and certainly not LAMELY related. Most importantly, Jim and Della were NOT two foolish children. Here's the ending for you to read again.:

"The magi, as you know, were wise men--wonderfully wise men--who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. Being wise, their gifts were no doubt wise ones, possibly bearing the privilege of exchange in case of duplication. And here I have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house. But in a last word to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest. O all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest. Everywhere they are wisest. They are the magi. "

How about if you take some time to lamely relate the greatest gift that you ever gave, or the most special one that you ever received? If you do, you'll be spreading the Gift of the Magi, and one of the true joys of the Christmas season?

Check out this classic video and commercial to see how happy these children were to receive a Nintendo N64.

The year was 1998. I woke up early on Christmas morning to find a plethora of presents for me under the tree. I opened the largest one first with the help of my younger sister. We were shocked to see a glorious Nintendo 64 inside the wrapping paper. I went crazy with excitement, screaming and scratching at the box.

While this may not be my happy Christmas memory, I am still joyous when I reminisce the Christmas of 2001. I was only ten years old, so I still believed in Santa. It was seven in the morning, and I decided to wake up my entire family to open presents. They sure weren’t happy that I got them out of bed that early. So we went on with the normal present-opening procedure. We would each take turns opening presents until none remained. At the end of the opening session, I was a bit bummed. Actually, I was very bummed. I had not gotten the present I wanted. But then, my dad entered the room with a giant present from Santa, addressed to me! I jumped up with excitement. I immediately grabbed it, and tore the wrapping paper off. It was my very first snowboard! It was a cheap plastic one, but I didn’t care. I had to wait about a week before using it, because there was no snow outside. It took me a few tries to get the hang of it, but I eventually did. I feel that this is the greatest gift I ever received because it set the foundation for something I am very passionate about today. Snowboarding is one of my favorite things to do. I always look forward to winter vacation, so I can go snowboarding in the Pocono’s.

I personally do not care much for gift giving in this material world. Most people become greedy and forget about the thought put into the gift. Sometimes it doesn't even matter who got you the gift, it's just the fact that you got it. If it is not worth much, then it doesn't matter. The best gift that I gave to my mother one year was a letter. I mean I got her gift certificates and other goodies as well, but I thought the letter was the best part. Letters/cards are often under-appreciated. Of course, children care much more for the present rather than the card, but when one is older I think cards have more meaning. One night I was over at my friends house and she was having her daily two-hour-long phone call with her boyfriend, so I needed something to occupy myself with. I decided to write a letter for my mom because mother's day was the next day. I wrote this massive letter full of heartfelt memories, appreciation, and love. When I gave my presents to my mom, she liked them all of course, but after reading the letter I wrote her she cried. Personally, I think words have the most powerful meaning that no gift can attempt to reach. The best present that I have received would probably be my surprise sixteenth birthday party. I love surprises, and all my life I have always wanted a surprise party and this year I got one. It meant a lot to me because almost everyone that made my life whole was in that room. Nothing makes me happier than being surrounded by my dearest friends and family. Even though my favorite gifts given and received don't come wrapped in a box with a ribbon, they are the best gifts in my eyes.

I have recieved alot of great gifts in my lifetime, some I have lost, and some I will keep until the end of time. But my favorite gift of all time came this year actually. I slept in until around 12:00, which is pretty late for christmas day. I normally wake up around 7 for christmas, but this year I slept in. I woke up and went in brothers room, jumping on his bed, until he put me in a chokehold. We both hurried downstairs to see our parents ready to open presents. My mom handed me a few gifts that i went through quickly, all of them being great. A Disco Biscuits DVD, A Disco Biscuits shirt, a Moe. shirt, and many others. She then handed me a box that looked like it would be for clothes. I was thinking I would be getting hoodie or something, but to my surprise, I opened the box to find four tickets to see The Greyboy Allstars! The Greyboy Allstars are one of my favorite jazz bands ever, and a I had been dying to see them. My parents told me I could take one friend, and being that my brother would be in Florida (and the fact that he hates jazz), i decided to take my cousin Alex. So that thursday we drove down to the World Cafe Live, in Philadelphia. It is a great venue, and my cousin and I were front row. The band came on and the room came to life. I danced the entire show, and at the break the band gave my cousin and I the set list and their autographs. It was truly a night to remember and a gift that I will never forget recieving.

I have received several amazing Christmas presents over the years. However, this year’s present beats all the others combined. I like Christmas Eve just as much as Christmas because my whole family gets together and we all sit around the fire and listen to Christmas songs. Every year my mom buys each of us a pair of pajamas and an ornament, to hang on the tree. Even though many of other people my age do not think that this would be cool, I do. This year I got fleece sweatpants and an Old Navy shirt. The next morning we all opened gifts. I got many gifts that I love but there was one gift that made my jaw drop when I opened it. My mom wrapped it in an Uggs shoe box so I was very curious to what this could be. I opened the box and to my surprise there was another box I had to open. At this point I knew this was going to be a good present because my mom only double wraps for the most expensive present. When I opened the second box I was speechless. My parents bought me a brand new iphone; I couldn’t believe my eyes. It took a couple of days to activate it but once I did I couldn’t put it down.

Though I am not one to indulge in gifts, I really love one gift in particular that I received this Christmas, which was a new guitar. To be specific, it is a composite Fender Stratocaster, which means it is made up of parts from a couple of different guitars. What is special about this one, though, is that it is equipped with a vintage '74 maple neck that has already been worn in by its previous owner for extra playability. The unfinished mahogany body was made in the 80's in Japan, and all the hardware is from an American-made reissue Strat. After attending the School of Rock "Hippie" show, which consisted of various songs from popular bands of the 60's and 70's, my mother and step-father told me on the way home that they wanted to get me a new and nicer guitar. Apparently, they realized that I was pretty seriously interested in playing. Then after several weeks of looking, I found an awesome guitar at a local shop that was a great fit. The owners agreed to keep it on hold until my mother and I came to purchase it towards the end of October. I agreed with my mom that this would be a Christmas gift, so I wasn't allowed to actually have it until then. Despite the fact that I knew what I was getting, receiving the gift on Christmas was still exciting; after all, I had been anxiously waiting for approximately two months. I thanked both my mother and step-father for this amazing gift and then went upstairs to play for about an hour. The gift of music is a wonderful thing.

The greatest gift I ever gave was a mix CD I made for my mom. She loves some of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s songs such as “Christmas/Sarajevo” and “Wizards in Winter.” Unfortunately, these songs were on a variety of the orchestra’s many CDs. Instead of buying one CD for my mom, which contains a few songs she would like to listen to, I decided to make her a mix CD. My mom enjoys instrumental and up-beat songs this orchestra performs. Therefore, I searched on iTunes for the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and began listening to almost every song displayed. During the holidays, she saw a Miller commercial which used one of the orchestra’s songs. My mom did not know the name of the song, so I searched on Google for this mysterious song in the Miller commercial. My mom also enjoys listening to songs by different artists which I decided to add to the CD. The two songs I added were “Where are you Christmas” by Faith Hill, and “No More Drama” by Mary J. Blige. My dad and I drove to Wal-Mart in order to buy a fifteen-dollar iTunes card the day before Christmas Eve. Yes, we were cutting it close, but because of our busy schedule, this was the only time we had available to shop. After a few hours, the songs were all downloaded onto the CD. Having no time left in the day, I had to create a cover and then wrap the CD on Christmas Eve. I was not satisfied with the first cover I made; therefore I designed a second cover. The satisfaction of completing my task was evident when my mom opened her gift and saw the CD with her favorite songs and hopefully some new favorite songs.

I can't remember many of the gifts that I have received over the years for Christmas. I do remember however, a gift that I gave my mom one Christmas. I was little so it was tough for me to go out and buy something for her, so I usually made stuff. That year I decided to make her a scrapbook. I had a lot of pictures lying around, and I decided to make little categories of our family in the scrapbook. Parents, especially moms, always love when you make stuff for them. But this present just blew my mom away. She saw photographs that she had never even seen of our family together because my dad always took the pictures. I had also put in class pictures of myself so she could have it all in one place. My family has never been very good at organizing photos, so this was an amazing gift. My mom still keeps it to this very day and always asks me to make a new scrapbook, but I have grown out of that hobby. At least she has an organized place to look up memories! I don't think I can give a gift to parents that will top the scrapbook.

Every year on Christmas Eve I go to my grandparent’s house with my aunt, uncle and cousins and we all open gifts from each other before we head off to Church. Also every year on Christmas Eve there are four identical packages—one for me, my brother and my two cousins—under the Christmas tree. These four packages are from my great Aunt Janice and they travel all the way from the state of Washington. Every Christmas my Aunt Janice hand makes pajamas for all of us. All though this may come as a surprise, this is by far the best gift I receive every year. I know pajamas don’t sound like a very exciting gift, but I always look forward to seeing what kind of fabric she decides to use since she always uses a different fabric. My dad’s whole family meets at my Aunt Patty’s house for an Italian dinner and my cousins and I change into our pajamas from my Aunt Janice. This year the package from Washington was late and all four of us were really upset. To make it even worse, we thought we wouldn’t have anything to change into at my Aunt Patty’s house. It must have just been a coincidence that my Aunt Patty gave all four of us pajamas for Christmas that night. It just wasn’t quite the same but I stilled liked the ones my Aunt Patty gave me. Fortunately my Aunt Janice’s pajamas came a few days later. Better late than never I guess.

The best gift that I ever got was my four wheeler. This was two years ago and it was a yamaha 350cc warrior i was so happy when I got the four wheeler. Now I could go riding my my friends and dad who all had four wheelers when I etextremely muddy or snowy since my dirtbike cant go through snow to well or the woods. It was the last present that i opened and it was like a half hour after I had already finished opening my other presents. My parens like to wait to give us our big present after we have already finished opening our presents this way we don't think that we are getting anything else and they don't put it under the tree. I remember the first thing I did was start it up and I loved the sound that it made so I took for a spin around my back yard. I didn't ride it that long since it was actually cold that Christmas unlike the last two. Ijust couldn't believe that I had actually got a four wheeler and I still ride it today but we go riding in the woods and climb giant almos ninety degree hills that I couldn't do on my dirtbike. Thats why my four wheeler was the best CHristmas present that I ever recieved.

It was only a couple of days ago, during Christmas, that I received the most expensive and greatest gift so far. It as the Xbox 360. On Christmas Day, it was the last present I had opened and when I opened it, I was amazed that my parents would buy me such a present. I played it for 4 hours straight that day and my mom had to pull me off. That was the best prsnt i have ever received.

Just like in the video, I have recieved a Nintendo 64 as a present, but it was for my birthday. My favoite christmas present was given to me by my grandparents. It was my first bike. Now I had many presents at this time being as I was, at that point an only child. I remember it was christmas eve, and my father's side of the family had come over for dinner and to give eachother presents. So after all those festivities were over I was called into the kitchen and there stood a present addressed to me from my grandparents. Now one unique thing is they actually took the time to gift wrap a bike. Anyway I was thrilled to recieve such a wonderful gift. I went outside with my dad and my poppop-grandfather and they taught me how to ride. This gift was so great because I played for years on my bike with my friends in my neiborhood, it was my only mode of transportation. Also we would have races and play games with our bikes. It was my favorite toy.

When I think back I remember Christmas of 1999 the most. I was in second grade exited as ever because I had asked Santa for a Gameboy color. This would be my first video game of any kind. On Christmas morning, being that was anticipating the gift so much, I woke up at four o'clock! I went to wake up my parents but they sent me back in my room, since it was so early. Two and a half hours later, me and my sister were opening our gifts. I got some pretty cool gifts, like a Power Ranger action figure. By the end of the gift unwrapping, I still hadn't received my Gameboy color. Then my said that Santa had left me a note. It read, "Nick I couldn't find the Gameboy I was going to give you, but I got something else for you. Go check the basement under the steps." I went down disappointed. I found the package and opened it. I was so surprised when I saw that Gameboy. I played it so much it doesn't work anymore, but I still have it. What a Christmas!

A lot of people are writing about the greatest gift they ever recieved, well I decided to write about the greatest gift I have ever given. My Mommom had been asking for this one present for about 4 years. It's not that it was expensive of anything it was just something that none of us were willing to do. She had asked for a family picture of me my sister Krissy and my two cousins Tyler and Ryan. We haven't gotten one since my Poppop died and she wanted a new one that she could display in her house. Now a picture is usually easy. Not when you have two boys and then sisters that fight about everything in pictures. So we went to a photography place and got all dressed up. We kept it a secret for about 2 weeks and didn't complain once while we were there, which is surprising. We picked one and got it framed. We put it in a box that looked like it held more clothes or something. When she opened it she was so surprised, she had no idea we planned that for her. It made me feel good to see that we got something she will enjoy and appreciate for Christmas, because thats what it's really all about.

I must say the best gift i have ever recieved was a drum set from santa. I still believed in santa at that point, but i know my parents got it for me. I like music a lot and wanted to play on my own. I picked out this awesome beginner set from a catalogue and showed my parents. Christmas morning came and of course i got up early. There sat the set i picked out nice and shiny. I didn't get a lot of other gifts cause the set was kinda expensive, but i didn't care, i loved it. At this time my parents were still sleeping so i decided to wake them up by playing extremely loud. Of course they got up and by the end of Christmas break i had them wishing they had never bought the darn things and they had ear plugs. Even though it drove my parents crazy they put up with the noise so i could do what i wanted to do. Therefore, that was the best present i ever recieved.

i have received many great presents over the years. It is hard to decide on just one present but if i had to choose just one as my favorite, it would have to be the guitar i got two years ago. It was the last gift I received and it was a suprise. It was after everyone had opened their presents, my dad brought me downstairs and pulled a big present out of our crawlspace. He told me it was for my birthday and i started to tear away the wrapping paper. it was this long sort of trapezoidal shaped box. It took me about fifteen minutes to just get it open but i fanally tore away the box. It was a silver paul reed smith guitar which i wanted for a long time. I must have played that guitar for about three hours that day. I continue to play it everyday now and i could never be happier with it. It plays so well and has a great tone to it. If i had to choose one gift that i have received that i consider to be the greatest, my guitar would definitely be my choice.

I have gotten many great Christmas presents over the years. However, I do not think i have a certain "favorite" one. You should not base whether you like a present or not on how expensive it was, or how much you had asked for it and finally gotten it. Each present I get, I'm thankful that the giver even thought of me to get something. We should never just expect to get presents, because in reality, no one HAS to get presents for each other. For example, I usually get people presents because I care about them and want to see them happy. Even if we do not especially like the gift, the person thought about you, and it's the thought that counts. We should appreciate that the person took the time to try and think of a gift that we would, and then took the time out to guy buy it and wrap it. I think that the best presents are the one that really show people thought about what to get you. For example, sometimes i only slightly mention something around somebody, not even necessarily saying that i want it. Then i forget about it, and later on that person remembers what i had mentioned. This even has a greater meaning to me because it shows that the person really pays attention. Because of these reasons, this is why I have many favorite Christmas presents.

The greatest gift I have ever received was given to me by my parents. I received it back in 2001 or 2002. It was when I received my PS2. I remember the day I got it. I woke up early that at about eight that day. Then I ran and woke up my sister and then we ran in to my parent’s room and woke them up too. Then all of us went down stairs and started to open up all of presents. Usually we each get one present and open them up on at a time, and when we get done we do it again and again until all of the presents are gone. I opened up all of my presents, I was kind of sad when I didn’t get what I wanted. Then my dad reached behind the tree and got out a package I had missed and it was kind of big so I started to get excited. When he handed it to me I ripped it open and I saw I had gotten what I wished to get… the PS2.

Well lets see here. i think my greatest christmas present i ever got was a couple years ago i got my first guitar. And from then on my life was changed. Gutiar instantly became a huge part of my life and it still is to this very day. I remeber walking down the stairs. and seeing the normal presents, then right in the back layed down so i couldnt tell right away was my guitar. I went crazy, then i walked down to my basement and there was my amp set up already. Then i plugged it an from them on guitar was my life. I have to say guitar has changed my life, and its all because of it being my christmas present. I got a red and white fender stratocaster, it was the most amazing thing i had ever seen when i got it. I just couldnt put it down, i had to get yelled at over and over to to turn the amp down. And later that day i had my friends over and we jammed all night. That was by far the best present i had ever gotten because it changed my life forever, and my love of music came with it.

I recieved my favorite present about 5 years ago on Christmas Day. I woke up on Christmas morning and ran downstairs to find that Santa had been very nice to me that year. "Santa" gave me so many presents to choose from and i had no idea where i was going to start. There was one gift wrapped that stood out from all of the others around the Christmas tree.As i Quickly tore the wraping paper to shreds it revealed a brand new, red, gas, motorized scooter. I jumped in excitement screaming like a madman and immediatley took it out for a test drive around the neighborhood. I was so excited that i almost forgot about all of the other presents under the tree. After we got done with the presents on Christmas morning, i rode my brand new scooter all day untill i couldnt see anymore. I believe that this was the best present that i ever recieved because I had wanted one for so long. I had been dreaming of having a fast motorized scooter since i was five and i just could not believe that i finally got one. This could possibly go down as the best Christmas ever in my book.

Over the years I have received many amazing gifts.I received my favorite Christmas present three years ago. Just like every Christmas morning my 8 year old sister wakes up at 4 O’clock and runs in my room and wakes me up. It was fun when I was younger but at the age of 13 I wanted to sleep a little longer. I told her to go back to bed but she refused. She sat on the floor in my room for 3 hours waiting for me to wake up. Finally, I woke and we went to wake up my parents. When my parents, my sister, my brother and I all went down stairs Christmas morning we were surprised to see the number of presents under the Christmas tree. We always open the presents from Santa first. I always starts with the small presents and end with the larger presents. When I only had one present left I was curious to what it would be. I had gotten almost everything I had asked for. When I opened my last present I was completely shocked. It was a new snowboard. I was so excited because it was very cute and we were going skiing in California in two day. The snowboard was the greatest Christmas present I have ever opened.

The most special gift I have ever received would most definitely be the Nintendo 64 I received on the Christmas when I was eight or nine years old. I remember that it was the only thing I wanted that Christmas. It didn’t matter to me what else I got, but all I hoped for was to get a Nintendo. I woke up Christmas morning, extremely excited to go downstairs and see what Santa brought me. After opening all the presents under the tree, to my disappointment, there was no Nintendo. I was exceptionally upset, almost to a point where I was going to cry, until my parents asked what was in the corner in the room. It was a present that was for me. I opened it and was overjoyed to see a Nintendo 64. I don’t remember this but my mom said that I did not play with any of the other toys I got that Christmas and that she took everything back except for the Nintendo. This was by far the most memorable present that I have ever received on Christmas morning.

The Christmas present that made me scream for joy came in the winter of 2006. Yes, last year I screamed like a little girl when I opened my eyes and saw the greatest present I had ever received. I woke up at the usual time of seven o’clock and waited for my sister and mom to wake up. My sister and I always rearrange the presents so that each of ours are on our side. I had wanted the game for Playstation, Guitar Hero 2 but didn’t think I would get it. I really wanted this gift because I wanted to release my inner rock star and it looked really fun to play. I had wanted the first guitar hero but never got it. Of course I opened the biggest box under the tree with my name and was amazed. Before my eyes was the gift I really wanted and I could believe I finally got it After I opened that I didn’t really care about the rest of the present I wanted to play it right that second. I play it everyday still and have worked my way from easy to hard. I believe that is the only game I play. I even got my sister into this year, but I can still beat her pretty badly. Also this was the last year my sister was still at home and not away at college so we had more time to spend with each other. This was one of the best Christmases I can remember.

My parents usually buy me pretty nice things for Christmas, but four years ago they got me the best gift I could ever ask for. I have always wanted a dog, and I would beg my parents for one basically every day. Of course they always said no, and gave me the speech about how I would never take care of it and all that normal stuff parents say. I even specificially saying something to my dad at Christmas Eve mass about getting a dog, and him saying I was not going to get one. I also remember hearing a dog bark in bed that night and thinking about how I was never going to get a dog. So, on Christmas morning my sister and I went downstairs to open our presents. There was a bag on the kitchen table and my dad told us to look through it and that my mom would be right out; she just had to wrap a gift real fast. So we looked through the bag and there was a leash, a dog book, and some other dog stuff. At first I was mad and I asked why they would do that to me. Then my mom opened the door and into the kithcen came the cutest dog I have ever seen(a Shih Tzu named Cody). I could not believe it was ours. I was so surprised and did not even care about the rest of my presents.

The absolute greatest gift I’ve ever given was from “Santa’s Secret Shop” it was a pair of earring I gave my mother. The set was two flowers blue with a fake pink diamonds that I was sure were real. The joy i felt buying that gift for $2.99 was enough to light up New York I was sure my mother would love them. The most amazing part about these earrings was the little yellow velvet voltswagon bettle they came in because who would expect to open up a “bug” and find a pair of flower earrings? Well my Mother wasn’t that person she acted like those earrings were the greatest gift she had ever gotten even though I doubt that was actually the case at all. Without the slightest hesitation my mom made me feel like I was the coolest second grader in the world because I had the gift of being wise and able to know what people realy wanted, which is actually not one of my stronger points. My mom pulls those old beaten earrings inside that old broken car out every Christmas, rewraps them and opens them first every Christmas morning as a tradition because she knew how happy I was when I got those for her. That beetle and those earings are the worlds best Christmas gift

present of my life on the Christmas of 2005. As usual we woke up pretty early to go into the living room to open presents. We all took turns opening great gifts but then i got an envelope from my mother. I thought it would just be a gift card or money, but I was very wrong. It was four tickets to the Texas Longhorns verse the Duke Bluedevils basketball game at the NewJersey invatational holiday turnament. I am a very big Texas fan and when I saw these tickets i went crazy. It was the most amazing expirence of my life. I saw J.J. Reddick set his single game scoring record. I also got to see four future NBA players in J.J. Reddick, LaMarcus Alridge, T.J. Ford, and P.J. Tucker. It was amazing watching those caliber players play. I truly enjoyed every minute of that game nd still remember it vividly. I would not trade that for anything and I thank my mother so much for those tickets. They were the best Christmas present i ever received.

My grandparents’ house always looked well-tended and manicured. They planted many various flowers and plants and always took pride in them. Christmas was rapidly approaching in the year of 1997. My mother had the brilliant idea to make a heart-shaped stepping stone that my brother and I could place our handprints in. This was easier said than done. My mother had a great deal of trouble mixing the cement. When she finally stirred it enough, my brother, David, and I put our handprints, our initials, and polished rocks in the stone. On Christmas Day when we handed them their gift, they were puzzled at how heavy their present was. Surprise washed over their faces as they opened their gift. They enjoyed it so much that my grandfather went outside in the freezing cold that day to find a place for the stepping stone. He positioned it next to the steps that lead to their house, where everyone approaching the house could see it. To this day it is there. Sometimes when David and I walk up to the door, we press our hands against the stone and see how our hands have grown since that Christmas eleven years ago.

The greatest present I have ever gotten, I got just last year. I wanted to get the Nintendo Wii, but my parents kept saying that there was no place to get it, because it was sold out. The Wii is a video game system that uses a wireless motion senor as a remote, and it is very cool. I woke up at around five in the morning to find that my then three year old brother was already awake. (His loud voice probably woke me up). We were looking around opening other presents. I opened up all of my presents, I didn’t see what I wanted, and then I saw a big box behind the tree. When we both opened the box, we were very excited and started playing right away. We also got some great games with it as well. I never thought I would be able to get it, and because it was so surprising it is the greatest Christmas present I have ever received, at least for now.

Christmas is definitely my favorite holiday. A couple years agon, I got the best present from my old best friend. She came over to my house the day after Christmas. It was in a bag with tissue paper around it. When I opened it, I almost cried. It was a scrapbook that she made, and she said she had been working on it since September. It was filled with pictures of us from the five years we had been best friends. There were also friendship quotes and quotes from songs on every page. On the last page of the scrapbook she wrote a letter to me. The letter said how much I meant to her and how glad she was that she met me. It really made me happy to see how much she cares about me. Even though it wasnt an expensive or fancy present, the fact that she spent so much time on it meant a lot, and it is still my favorite gift today.

My Grandpa died probably about 5 years ago. When everybody was gathering things from his house, all my aunt wanted was his ring. The problem was we didn't know exactly where the ring was. I remember searching the house for the entire day, but we couldn't find it. My aunt was very upset. Around early december, I was at my aunt's house which was right down the street from my Grandpa's house. His house didn't sell yet, so we were still aloud to go in. My cousin and I were bored one day and decided to go walk around the house. We spent about an hour sitting down stairs in the basement, sitting at the bar he had, recalling many great memories of being at the house. Without even realizing it, I was messing around with something in one of the wine racks when we were sitting there talking. When I realized what I was doing, I pulled the object out. It was plain gold ring. I thought it was an interesting find, but then it clicked that that could be the ring that my aunt was looking for. I asked my cousin if that was it, and he said it was. He wanted to give it to his mother so bad, but I wanted to give it to her as a present for christmas. When that day came around, I saved that present for last. She opened it, smiled, and looked as if she was going to cry from tears of joy. She seemed very happy. I felt very proud when I gave that gift and that is something that I will remember for the rest of my life.

I have received numerous Christmas presents over the past years but none of them ever amount to the Christmas present me and my brother received last year. This Christmas present we picked out ourselves about two weeks before Christmas. This was my dog Casey. She is a yellow lab and is one year old. My brother and I had been asking for a dog for a year or so before Casey. Then one day after decorating our Christmas tree my mom and dad told us to get in the car because we were going to get an early present. We both hopped in and wondered what the present was. When we got where we were supposed to be my brother and I looked at each other because it was just a house. As we walked in the back yard we saw a small shed and the owner led us into it. As we walked it there were about seven little baby puppies running around. It was very hard to pick which one. Then finally we said, what ever puppy comes to us is ours and surely enough Casey came over to us and we took her home. Casey is a loving dog and I wouldn’t trade her for any other Christmas present in the world.

Have you ever heard the statement, “and in giving you receive”? For me this holiday season, this statement has proved to be true. This Christmas I “spread the holiday cheer” by giving homemade gifts to my family. For my “Pooh Bear- loving” aunt, I made a Pooh Bear blanket and a matching set of pillows. For my cousin who was expecting a baby boy, I also made a set of Pooh Bear pillows. Lastly, for my oldest cousin’s two children, I made a pair of Sesame Street pillows. I was so thrilled that all the gifts looked great, considering I just learned how to sew a couple of months ago. Although the shipping charges for all of these gifts totaled about one hundred dollars, the response I would soon hear from my family was the greatest gift I ever received. When my aunt received her package, she called me up, screaming with excitement. After I got off the phone, I was beaming with joy. My aunt’s reaction to the gift was unbelievable and I will never forget that moment on the phone with her! When my cousin received his package, his wife was already in labor! After all the baby excitement boiled down, my cousin emailed me and attached baby pictures. These pictures meant so much to me because in every one there was the baby, extended family, and my pillows! Lastly, my oldest cousin emailed me and told me that her two children love the pillows and that they carry them around all the time. This holiday season I shared my new-found talent, sewing, and in return I received the most special gift of all- watching my family enjoy the gifts that I made especially for them!

The best Christmas gift I have ever received was a softball glove last year. Last year a week before Christmas I bought a brand new really nice softball game and to break it in my uncle came over and put some Hot Heat on it and stuck it in the oven. Well my uncle didn’t read the directions and when the oven started smoking we realized something was wrong. He took the glove out of the oven and it was ruined. There was a whole burnt in the mitt and it was black, it was originally tan. I told my uncle that it wasn’t a big deal even though I was really upset. My dad knew how upset I was and he shared the same love for baseball as I do for softball, so we went to Dick’s the next day and they didn’t have anymore. The following day we went literary every sport store in Delaware and none of them had my glove, and no other glove seemed to fit right. So on Christmas my family and I were opening presents and I started opening one and it was the same type of softball mitt as the one I originally had. I was so happy and I asked my dad how he found it and he told me he drove two hours to Maryland after calling about twenty different stores and one store had the same model of my old glove. It was and still is my favorite gift.

The greatest Chritsmas present I have ever received was not given to me alone, but to my brothers, my cousins, my aunts and uncles, and my mom. Last year, Christmas morning, we received a call from my grandparents around 11 a.m. My youngest brother, Jack, 7 years old at the time, answered the phone. Within about a minute, I could hear a scream of excitement from my brother, I'm sure the entire neighborhood heard it too. My grandfather had told him that they had given the entire family tickets for a week-long Carnival cruise. We were told to have our bags packed by December 30, with plans to fly out of Philadelphia and land in Tampa, FL., staying the night and then setting sail the next morning, New Years Eve. It was the most magnificent present I had ever received, not to mention the most expensive. Enjoying a pleasant 7-day adventure in the Caribbean with the rest of the family was just living a dream, and I absolutely loved every minute of it.

The Gift of the Magi
I remember that Christmas very vividly I was abut 11 or 12 years old as my sister woke me up at 9am. So as she throws the pillow at me I wake up as she is telling me to come downstairs so we can open presents. I asked her if Mom was awake yet as she nodded her head when running down the stairs. When I reached the living room I saw a bunch of presents with red wrapping paper I began to open all of them. There were all kinds and all different shapes and sizes. When the unwrapping was over I was very happy with everything. Although there was one thing in particular that I liked the most were two tickets to the 76ers and Cavilers game in a month or two. I as real excited because the 76ers are my favorite team and I really wanted to see LeBron James in person and all. So I was very happy and could not wait. So when that Friday night we got to the game and he was pretty packed and my dad and I got there just in time for the warm-ups. As the game started both teams looked ready with both team’s all-stars ready to go at it (Iverson and James). Looking back I do not really remember much from the game except there were a few good shots and dunks and the exception of the 76ers losing which was not a surprise.

I think the best gift I have ever received was one from this Christmas. After a year of talking about how much I wanted to learn to play the guitar, my sister surprised me completely with the wrapped up guitar on Christmas morning. I had been so happy to see that I wanted to hug her until she passed out. It wasn’t just the guitar itself. It’s the gift of music that comes with the guitar, and the obvious belief in me that my sister has for me that makes it the greatest Christmas gift of all time. I could name my past video consoles, or baseball bats, and so forth. It’s just when I heard about this I suddenly thought about the guitar I had gotten. I am currently taking lessons and catching on quick. Hopefully in the future I can share the gift of music being well played with all of my family and especially my sister. It’s almost as if the gift returns itself back to her, because getting it for me created the opportunity of me learning to play and hopefully becoming good at being a guitarist. I think it will be hard for me to rival a gift like this to give back to my sister, but maybe I will find something.

The best Christmas present i have ever received was my video i pod. It wasn't the best cause it was expensive or rare but i use it nearly everyday of my life. It gave me the ability to watch tv shows, movies, and podcasts on the go. I bring it almost every where i go and it makes traveling very pleasant because i have an almost unlimited source of entertainment. I have never used any other Christmas present this much. Many people see a "must have" present they want but after about a month they put it on the top shelf and it is soon forgotten. I think a practical present is a good one.

This assignment for me was very hard. It was so hard because I have recieved very many gifts in the past that I like alot. I honestly like giving gifts more than I enjoy recieving them. But after I thought about it for awhile I finally thought of my most treasured gift. The gift that I value the most was given to me on the day of my Confirmation by my grandma. She gave me a silver cross necklaces with diamonds in it. It was the prettiest peice of jewlrey I had ever seen, never the less owned! I was so excited because I had been wanting a cross necklace for awhile. I wear it almost every day. For me it was so special because I felt like my family finally thought I was responsible enough to own a nice peice of jewlrey. Also I liked it alot because it was given to me by my grandma who I love and look up to very much. The last reason why I liked it so much was because I can look at it and remember my Confirmation, a very important day in my life.

The most special gift I have ever received was my kitty. All year I begged my parents for a cat, but they said I could not have one. On Christmas morning I was a little depressed because I thought I was not getting a cat. To my surprise, I came down the steps to see a little kitten sleeping in a basket next to all of my other presents. It was so amazing that I thought I was dreaming. I ran up to it and picked it up, but unfortunately, it got out of my hands by scratching me. It hurt, but I was too happy to care. This gift was so special to me because it is something I still cherish today. Toys come and go in a year or so, but my cat is still alive today and will hopefully live many more happy years. Every night she sleeps with me and every night I thank my parents for surprising me with my cat. Her name is Cinder because of the color of her fur. She is a small cat and has white spots under her stomach. This was the greatest gift I have ever received because it remains as important to me today as it did when I first got it.

The greatest gift of all would have to be the gift my father gave me about 4 years ago. At the time I was a huge video game head, always playing and dominating the newest videogames that were out. Playing agaisnt friends, family, anyone to see how good I really was. I loved sports games, and became obsessed and excersize deprived due to my dreamcast. The year when xbox became now adays Iphone, I was dreaming about getting it for christmas. Xbox was the newest and the supposedly best system of that time. None before was better. I had no idea I would be getting this for christmas. I walked down the stairs Christmas morning, with the normal joyful feelings of a christmas day child. I began opening my presents, small, large, wierd shaped presents. I opened up a present that held a xbox video game in it, and looked at my dad and said "this isnt the right console, we dont have xbox" my dad lied to me and said "well...i guess ill take it back, i must have grabbed the wrong copy of the game, i thought we had that one...we'll see" i was letdown and thought that i wasnt going to be able to play the cool new game that i got since i didnt have the right system. i finished opening all of my presents and said "dad when can we take the game back, i want to get the right one for dreamcast, so i can play it" my dad said well go over into the corner and theres a box, inside the box is the reciept. as i walked over to the box, i realized this was much bigger than just a box holding a receipt. i opened the box up, and there sat a brand new xbox with even more games. it all hit me at once, my dad set up this whole thing and tricked me into getting dissapointed. i was stunned. not only was this an amazing gift, but the unforgettable way of trickery my dad played on me will be in my memories forever.

I think that the best gift that I have gotten in recent memory is my laptop. I really like it, I am actually typing on it right now. I have been asking my parent for one for the past few years at Christmas, and this year they finally caved and got me one. It doesnt have any significant sentimental value or anything like that, it is just a really great gift that I use a lot. I can use it for homework, browsing the internt, using programs, listening to music, watching dvd's, and so much more. It is an HP Pavillion laptop. I have gotten gifts that are not so materialistic though. Every year my younger brothers get me some little present that isnt something special. I always like them though because I know that they really thought about what they wanted to get me and hoped that I would like it. Getting gifts like this are my favorite to get because I know that it is the thoughts that count
