A Great Homecoming

You shoulda been there.

The weather cooperated, the fans came out in droves, and the team didn't let anyone down with a big victory over St. E's.

The bleachers were packed, so these sophs and their teachers watched along the fence.

The St. Mark's Marching Band entertained from start to finish.

What a great Homecoming Court!

Game Day at St. Mark's, with insightful commentary by some future ESPN announcers.

Yes it was a great homecoming! This year's weather was much better than that of last year's. The win over St. E's also boosted spirits rather than the loss against Dover last year. All in all, I think this year's homecoming game and festivities was a great experience and hopefully we'll see more of the same in the future.

I both agree and disagree with your article. I believe that it is not the deep symbolism of Spartan pride that gets us ready for the homecoming game. It is the chance to be just plain silly. It is really outrageous that we dance to Sesame Street and Marti Gras. It is really weird that we show our school spirit through random themes. It is strange that we show Spartan spirit by wearing pajamas and “I Love New York” accessories. I think that in future spirit weeks, every day should be Spartan colors, uniforms, and sweats and/or emphasis on the miscellaneous theme. I don’t play football, however I do play basketball. If I were getting ready to play the biggest game of the season, all of that seriousness would make me go insane. You need to be silly in order to loosen up and have a fun time.
I also agree with you on the fact that we should start the pep rally of with “Winds of Time.” But the best part of the pep rally is singing songs that are cool today. We get to create a remix of the coolest songs today and make them into our own Spartan fight songs. This gets the athletes hyped up and ready to go out, have a good time beating Saint E’s by a score of 50-6.
You mentioned how a crowd 100,000 rallying Penn State fans can quickly become serious for the fight song. The same is true at our school. We become silent for the team captains to speak their words of wisdom to us. Yet, all they say is, “Let’s hear it for the Spartans!” All of the sudden, this once silent gym is now rumbling with cheers loud enough to create a small earthquake. Blow horns go off, people scream at the top of their lungs and, though I’m not on the football team, I’ll bet that everyone on that team is now psyched for their upcoming game. They know and can feel the support of the entire student body. They are now ready to prove to the opposing team what spirit is all about. That is what I believe spirit week is all about.
