Veterans Day, November 11
Thank a military veteran on Friday for his or her service to our country. Pray for those still representing the USA in the War Against Terror. Follow this link to read a letter written by a young soldier to his dad during the Vietnam War. It's called "Don't Tell Mom."
Here is the History of Veterans Day taken from www.military.com:
Veterans Day was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor Armistice Day -- the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislature that was passed in 1938, November 11 was "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day.'" As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans.
In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day to honor American veterans of all wars.

while most americans have great pride in their soldiers defending thier country, there are some that show a great amount of disrespect just becasue they do not approve of the war.
near the cafeteria, on the wall looking over the balcony, a list is posted of the first 2000 soldiers who have died. blank posters were also left up for people to write a small thanks or whatever. i was readng the posters once adn while there were a few genuine notes of appreciation, there were also quite a few that were disrespectful. one says something along the lines of "thanx for killing those iraquis' among various other things. i also passed by once and heard some one remark,"well what about the iraquis we murdered?"
let me be the first to say that i do not approve this war, but i think it's horrible that some don't show their support for the troops. they are men adn women who have families and lives, who had to go serve thier counry whether they wanted to or not. they are wiling to make the ultimate sacrifice,a very honorable feat.
i just don't understand how people could mock the bravery and courage of our troops....when many students at smhs have family members in the military!
i totally agree with rlcred up there. and i'm appald at the disrespect some people have towards our soldiers. i don't support the war either, but that's why all the signs and stickers don't say "Support the war!", they say "Support our troops!".
My grandfather was in the Navy during WWII, my other grandfather was a doctor for the army, my grandmother was a nurse for the army, and my father was IN the army. so i made sure to tell every single one of them today how much i appreciate them puting their lives on the line to protect others. its a brave and noble thing to do and if some small minded people can't see that, then i feel truly bad for them.
rlcred and lmdgreen,
Well said. What a country we live in! Soldiers risk their lives to preserve the lives and freedoms of those who would call them "killers." Only in America.
