Sophs: The Powerful Play Goes On ... (due April 27)
“That the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse ….”
Walt Whitman offered this as a reason why YOU are important to this world, even midst the foolish and the faithless.
So tell me what “verse” you will contribute to the world, in three to five sentences OR lines of verse. I suggest that you write in FIRST PERSON. For inspiration, look out the March 2014 archives to see what last year's tenth graders wrote.
Do not include your name in YOUR VERSE (but of course, indicate who you, as always, when you post your comment).
I intend to put all of your class’s responses together into one Song of the Sophs that we will set to music and sing at the next school-wide assembly.
(Only kidding about the music and singing part).

My verse is to be different than everybody else.
I can use my humor to brighten people's day.
I can use my athleticism to entertain others.
I can inspire others by showing them anything is possible.
I will learn, teach, and inspire all to love and accept the love of others.
I will sing to the tallest mountaintops and dance down in the valleys.
I will be mindful of senseless decisions and their possible impacts on the future.
I will gain a new perspective and cease worries about minuscule happenings.
I will share my passions so that others might find hidden gifts within.
For upon the success of these, all may feel safe, loved, and accepted as they are.
I will live for life itself.
To be all that I am. To give all that I am.
I have something to offer the world that no one else can.
I have no idea where I'm going. And it's terrifying.
But it's ok.
One day at a time I'm figuring it out.
And if not great, I'll at least be memorable.
With honor, I will wear a badge.
Making the world a better place is how I will contribute my verse.
To incite a positive change in those around me.
I will keep those around me safe and seek no recognition.
My verse is unwritten. I have no idea what I will leave on this earth. I just hope I leave with my head held high and my dreams lived out.
I feel God Pushing me to do my best.

I'll smile with a stuffy nose and suffer through a cold,

for intelligence is brilliance when you know what to be grateful for.
I want to be known for helping people in need
And to improve the world for the benefit of all.
I want to be a positive influence on others
And make my mark on the world.
I will strive to do my best in everything, and I will continue to be myself and not try to live up to others' expectations.
I want to make a difference in this world and help others when I get a real job when I'm older.
Most importantly, I will love others and give other people all the good things they deserve.

I will be someone to talk to for the brainwashed teen that stares into space when not staring at his phone screen.
Despite what you might think, nobody ever wants to be alone.
I am determined.
I will work hard when everyone else takes a break.
I will not stop until I get better.
I will be an inspiration.
I will teach others how to be the best they can be.
I won't give in to normality. I will choose originality as I work toward my dreams.
I will contribute my verse as I help others so that they can do the same.
I will not sit by and watch what is unjust; I will take a stand.
My verse will fully reveal itself to me as I go on in life,
And it will lead me to a destination where my skills may awaken and truly belong.

I refuse to be a spent star in this deep universe

The world may be against me
But it is also on my side
The right mixture of both
Ensures that my verse will never die
There are so many verses, so many things, that could get me to where I want to be.
But which one will I choose, which story will I write?
Just as grass grows, and leaves go, I too will change with time.
I do not know where I'm going, but I do know where I have been, and that will help me get to where I want to be in the end.
My verse is one of happiness
I will be the cause of the laughter of my peers
I will be the source of a smile on a strangers face
My joy will inspire the joy of others
