Creative Writing: Journal #1 Walk-Up Songs (due Tuesday, April 21)

These days, when a major league baseball player walks to the plate as his name is announced, the public address system blares a song that either the player or someone in the public relations office has specially selected. It's called his "entrance" or "walk-up" song.

You don't have to know baseball to understand that macho guys might choose macho songs like "Bad to the Bone" or "Wild Thing" as their personal theme music.

Now I don't suppose that you have a POEM that you personally respond or relate to, do you? If not, then how about a song?

Let me know what poem or song you'd like to have read or played as your name is announced to thousands of fans at the ballpark.

And of course, explain why.

You might mention the lyrics. You might mention the pounding of the drums or the blaring horns. You might mention some memory that you have of the song that you relate to.

Do so in a minimum of 150 words or 15 blogs lines.

The point is that we should try to relate personally to poetry or music and not worry too much about what the author REALLY meant or intended. I bet these baseball players don't analyze their "introduction songs" too much.

My song would be "Keep the Car Running" (by Arcade Fire) if I made it to the big leagues. I think it's a cool title to a song, and it sounds like something someone would say who wants to be sure there's always a way out of trouble. Not that I'm a troublemaker or anything. It's got a pulsating rhythm, vocals that cross Bruce Springsteen with David Byrne (Talking Heads), and some well placed chants that give it the feel of an anthem. It especially sounds good late at night in your car when you're cruising (the speed limit, naturally) on I-95. One thing's for sure--you'll never fall asleep listening to this song.

The song I would choose to walk out to would be “Hall of Fame” by The Script. I would choose this song because not only does it have a motivational beat, but the words in the song are very inspirational. Basically the song says that the harder you work for something the more you will get rewarded. My favorite part in the song is when it says, “Do it for your people, Do it for your pride, How you ever gonna know if you never even try?” Whenever I want to succeed in something but I’m not sure if I can I ask myself that same question. Later on in the song it talks about all the professions you can be if you work for them. Hearing this song while walking out on the field would remind me how I got there and how much I already accomplished. Also, the song having positive words helps to show what kind of person I am when people hear the song.

The song I would walk up to is the song “I Lived” by One Republic. The song is about living life to the fullest and through no matter what you should live everyday like your last. No matter what happens you should live everyday and do anything you want. If I was walking into a sport I loved and I was playing professionally, which would make every game a big game, I would want this song because I am living as I walk up and I am doing what I love. It would get me in the moment and would make me do well because it would get me into the playing mood and would make me realize that every play is a big play. As people cheered and as I jogged in, everyone yelling my name, and under all the lights; that would be the best moment I could have and would make me know, that I had lived.

My walk up song would be "Knock Knock" by Mac Miller. I would walk up to this song playing in the background because of the fast paced beat Mac raps to. It's a good song to sing along to and it will get stuck in your head for the rest of the day. This song always puts me in a good mood and it pumps me up. This song makes it hard for me to sit still when I listen to it. It's a song that gets the adrenaline going for me and that's why I think it would be perfect as a walk up song. It also reminds me of a clear summer day, driving with the windows down. This song will never get old for me making it a good choice for a walk up song since I'll have to hear it 4-5 times a game.

If I were to have to walk out to thousands of fans at the ballpark, the song that I would want to be played would be, “come baby come” by K7. Not only does this song have lyrics that say “Trying to hit a home run, swing batta batta batta, batta batta swing” that fits the baseball walk out theme, but the song is accompanied by a catchy beat as well. Every time I hear this song I think of one of my favorite movies “Stick it.” In this scene, the gymnasts are at an invitational and have started a movement. The gymnasts talk amongst themselves and realize that if they could choose the winner, the judging would be fair. They convince all the others in the competition to do the same, choosing one person from each event that they deem the best to be the "winner". The winner completes her routine; the others scratch. Wei Wei in this scene is supposed to be the winner on the beam. She plays this song and creates a freestyle routine using both extraordinary gymnastic skills and dance moves. This routine is so different and creative and creates a truly inspiring scene.

"Bad to the Bone" is one of those songs that you immediately know when you hear it. Whenever this song comes on (which isn't often) I, along with many others can't help but to sing along. Hearing this song could even turn a mood around in a positive way. You can't listen to this song without feeling great. If I entered the field with this song playing, I'd walk out with much confidence. It would help pump me up and get me ready to play the ball game. It's a personal favorite and a great song for any entrance. It'll have the crowd going wild and the perfect reactions or energy you would want to see or feel around you before a ball game.

If I had to pick a song to be played while my name is announced, I would pick Centuries by Fall Out Boy. I would pick this song because it is very upbeat and would get me and the crowd fired up. This song would get me ready to play the sport I’m about to play and also make me feel as if I am cool or something. The lyrics in the chorus say, “But you will remember me, remember me for centuries.” These lyrics, especially in this situation, would make me feel as if all eyes are on me and also get me in the mindset to win this game. I would feel like I had to give it my all in order to get the win and for people to “remember me for centuries.” Later on in the song, the lyrics say, “And I can’t stop till the whole world knows my name.” These lyrics would also make me feel like the (wo)man as I walk onto the sports field.

The song "Feeling Good" sung by Nina Simone (I prefer Michael Bublé's version) is the song that would be my walk up song. This song expresses my love for old, good music. This song says, "it's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life, for me, and I'm feeling good." To me, this would express how every day is a new day and that you should treat everyday with a fresh start, as I do. Everything that surrounds you every day is precious. In this song, many things in nature are described like, "sun in the sky," "fish in the sea," and "blossom on a tree." In my life, I believe it is important to take your time and enjoy the little things in life and this is where all the descriptive nature parts come in because a lot of people don't notice the little things in life like "a blossom on a tree" but it's important to take your time and enjoy everything surrounding you.

The song that I would choose to be my walk-up song is “All of the lights” by Kanye West. I would pick this song because it makes it seem like something incredible so you have to keep your eyes wide open. In this song the line “Turn up the lights in here, baby extra bright I want yall to see this.” is repeated multiple times. I feel like this part of the song is perfect for a walk up theme because it tells people to turn up the lights, which could metaphorically mean that you should be alert at whose coming out next. Not only are the words in this song important the music in the background is very fast and upbeat and just brings a positive vibe to the atmosphere. This song features a lot of other artist like Rihanna and Alicia Keys so a lot of people will be able to listen different artist.

If my name were to be called out on a baseball diamond and I had any song I could choose from to be my walk out song I would choose between Hall of Fame by the Script, and The Fighter by Gym Class Heroes. I would choose the Fighter because it talks about the gymnast John Rosco on the American Olympics men's gymnastics squad who came from the Bronx and had nothin but now has made a name for him self. The song is inspiring and my favorite lines are "Until the referee rings the bell, Until both your eyes start to swell, Until the crowd goes home What we gonna do ya'll? Give em hell, turn their heads Gonna live life 'til we're dead. Give me scars, give me pain. Then they'll say to me, say to me, say to me There goes the fighter, there goes the fighter. Here comes the fighter. That's what they'll say to me, say to me, say to me,." These are some of my favorite lines because they are saying not to give up and to keep fighting. The other song is the same way in that they motivate you to keep going on. My favorite lines from that song are, "Dedicate yourself and you can find yourself, Standing in the hall of fame. And the world's gonna know your name. 'Cause you burn with the brightest flame. And the world's gonna know your name. And you'll be on the walls of the hall of fame......Do it for your people, Do it for your pride, Never gonna know if you never even try. Do it for your counrty, Do it for you name, 'Cause there's gonna be a day." These lyrics also inspire me to do better in anything not for myself only but for my loved ones. Also I chose these songs because their music videos are very touching. In all if I was to have a walk out song it would be between The Fighter, and Hall of Fame.

My walkout song would be “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns N’ Roses. The guitar and the drum instrumentals at the beginning of the song automatically boost my heart rate and makes me focused at the task at hand. I do not understand why this song gets me pumped up considering the lyrics having nothing to do with succeeding in sports. However, the different instrumentals and the vocalists unique voice gets me hyped up to play. I have been listening to this song on the way to lacrosse games since I was a freshman so it automatically triggers something in my brain that it is time to get focused and achieve the task at hand. I would only want the first thirty seconds of the song in my walkup because that is the part that gets me the most focused. There is no single universal workout song because everyone has that one song that makes them feel more focused then others. I wish my go to song was something that had lyrics that meant more for what I was doing, but it doesn’t so I just have to be able to get focused and step up to the plate no matter what song is playing.

If I was asked to pick a song for me to walk out up to bat at the plate to start off the baseball game, I would choose We Own It by 2 Chains. This song doesn’t mean anything to me personally nor do I have any special memories to do with this song. When I hear this song before a game it gets me excited and fired up for the game. I feel like it would help me get ready to go play and win. This song makes me think about all the hard work I would have put into practicing and getting ready for this game. For example, a lyric that explains that feeling would be “perfecting my passion, thanks for asking.” It describes everything you feel the first time you step onto that field and step up to the plate. This is just a song that I like and that I would like to have as I step onto the field as my name is called out on the speaker.

When one hears the song "Ignition Remix" by R. Kelly they can't help but smile and sing along. I'd be willing to bet around 90% of all americans are familiar with the tune. For these reasons it is an obvious choice for the song i would play when stepping up to the plate. I honestly cannot remember a single time when R. Kelly's "Hot'N fresh out the kitchen" wasn't followed by a cohesive chorus of laughs and the rest of the lyrics sung verbatim by everyone around me. Thus it is the perfect song for a hypothetical crowd to get excited for and relate to.

My walk up song would be Trophies by Drake if I ever made it to the big leagues. First off this song has an important title. Its called Trophies which is what ever team is playing for. We all want to become the best team and receive our first place trophy. Listening to this song helps me focus in on my at bat so I can do whatever my team needs me to do to help win that first place trophy. This song also has a catchy beat. The beginning starts off with a recognizable beat that would be good for walking up too. This song is able to take my mind off the pressure of my next at bat and help me just enjoy what i’m doing. I am able to get lost in the music and relax. This helps me have fun. Having fun while playing is one of the most important parts about baseball. Usually when you're having fun you’re also playing at your best.

With an immediate start and a catchy tune, Take a Walk by Passion Pit is the perfect song to be introduced by. There is a definite air about the song that sets a triumphant walking rhythm and a glorifying introduction. Certainly no one has been introduced with such a song that everyone will stare. The song will make people wonder; what kind of person would chose this song to be introduced by? It is different, yet effective and intriguing.
The overall feeling of the story-telling song is reminiscing. The male narrator of the song remembers the simpler times and growing up with his wife and children. He simply takes a walk to go off by himself and remember the good times. I would like to grow old like this; simply and humbly. With this song by Passion Pit, I would enter a crowd with passion, contentness, and confidence without glorifying myself.

As a high school baseball player, one of my dreams would be to walk up to the batter's box to my favorite song. The song I would choose would be, "The Prayer," by Kid Cudi. I would choose this song because it is one of my favorites of all time. Unlike other people, the song I chose as a walk-up song is a slow, calming song. Usually people would choose a "hype-up," invigorating song, but not me. from playing baseball all my life, I have recognized that I play better when I am calm and under control. That is why I chose this song, instead of a song that would get my adrenaline pumping. The soft melody of the instruments combine with Kid Cudi's captivating voice in a way that creates an amazing, relaxing walk-up song. Kid Cudi's dynamic music style is highlighted in his song. His lyrics are not only filled with heart and passion, but he also creates great sounds to bring his lyrics to life. Even though many people would choose exciting, exhilarating songs, I would choose "The Prayer" because it is an excellent song with a relaxing sound and beautiful lyrics.

My walk up song would be Time of Your Life by Kid Ink. I chose this song because I like the lyrics; so often, it seems, music is about money and drugs. But this song is different - it talks about letting go and enjoying yourself. It's catchy enough to be effective as an entrance song, while also staying in the head of the listener for a while. It's also relaxing; usually, if someone is making an entrance, they would be nervous. It takes a certain type of song to bring someone down to a calm state of mind, and this certainly does that. The beat and melody perfectly complement the lyrics, as the relaxed synthesizer goes perfectly with the drum machine. This song has everything needed for an effective entrance.

If I had to choose a song to be my walk up song, I would choose "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem. This song has a great beat to it and the lyrics give off confidence. "I'm slim shady, yes I'm the real Shady. All you other Slim Shadys are just imitating..." It's like you know you're the best of the best and you're unique so everyone else should stop trying to be like you because they never will be. Also, in the beginning of the song Eminem asks, "Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?" I think it would be cool to step up as he says this. I really like this song because if I’m going to walk up to the plate in the major leagues, I want a powerful, confident song.
