SOPHS: Google News Vocab Sentences (Oct. 31 classwork)

Vocabulary in-class and homework (if necessary) lesson

“Look up” using Google News any FIVE (5) words (from each unit 1, 2, and 3) for their usages in reputable news stories. “Window's” section of class work with words 1-10 and “doors'” work with 11-20.

Read the sentences in which your words appear—determine if they are used correctly---and then type, or copy and paste, the sentences into a document. BOLDFACE (and CAPITALIZE) the vocabulary words within the sentences. So for this first part of the assignment, you should have 15 sentences, 5 from each of the three units.

Then, read any ONE entire article. Choose an article that you may enjoy reading, not necessarily the first that appears. After reading the article, paraphrase its content in 3-5 sentences. Write this paraphrase AFTER the sentences you’ve posted. Be ready to talk about the article you read to the class.

Finally, you will paste all of your sentences and your article paraphrase as a comment to a blog posted at Schoolsville. Your substitute teacher has a list of your vocabulary words in case you forgot your book.

Complete this for homework if necessary.
Check MY SMHS over your three-day break.

This article begins by talking about the unfortunate injuries of Nerlens Noel and Alex Len, and how it forced them to miss the majority their rookie seasons. The article goes on to talk about how other players in their draft class have already made names for themselves in the rookie seasons in the NBA. Also, it says that they had promising preseasons and each hope to have good years. Throughout the speech given by Jimmy Valvano, pathos, logos, and ethos are used to make the speech more effective. Ethos was used many times throughout the speech from talking about his battle with cancer to coaching. He mentions that Dick Vitale said he was a very emotional and passionate man, which is what helps him get through a life of fighting cancer. He mentions how his parents shaped who he is as a man and how they helped him get to where he is today. He mentions his coach and good friend, Mike Krzyzewski. Even though they played against each other, they still managed to remain good friends.
Logos is used to persuade his listeners to donate to cancer research. The most persuasive line using logos is, ""But try if you can to support, whether it's AIDS or the cancer foundation, so that someone else might survive, might prosper, and might actually be cured of this dreaded disease." This sentence inspires people to donate not only for their benefit of feeling good about themselves, but so that they might actually save someone's life.
Valvano's speech, while very informing, was revolved around emotion. The entire speech was very touching to anyone who listened to it because of the different aspects of pathos used. The line that expressed pathos the most was Valvano's last statement, "Cancer can take away all my physical ability. It cannot touch my mind; it cannot touch my heart; and it cannot touch my soul." The effect that statement had on his feeling towards cancer moved every single one of his listeners and made them aware of what he, along with others, have to go through everyday to survive.

Evidence Lends Credence to Police Officer's Version of Events in Ferguson Case
Autopsy and other examinations have led to strong evidence supporting the officer who shot Michael Brown in Ferguson. Brown had suffered a gunshot wound on his thumb going to his wrist which suggests that he was reaching for officer Wilson's weapon. Other wounds to the head, chest, and arm show that Brown was facing the officer and not running away, or have his hands up. It is also believed that Brown's judgement could have been impaired since there was marijuana in his system.
