Sophs Journal #1: Your Favorite Work of Art--post before Friday, Sept. 5

Tell me what you consider to be your favorite work of art. Please don't limit your definition of art to the "fine" arts, like painting. Please feel free to include the "pop" arts, like music, film, cartoons, or television.

You might want to use this post as a "warm up" or pre-writing to the final essay that is due Friday, September 12. However, you may choose to write about something else for the final essay, too.

Complete this blog/journal response before Friday, September 5, so I can post all of your classmates responses for you to read.

Remember, I recommend that you first write your response in a Word document, save it, and then copy and paste it as a comment at Schoolsville. Eventually, I will collect all of your "blog/journal" responses at the end of each marking period as a graded assignment.

Be more succinct here than you will be in your essay--write a MINIMUM of 200 words (your essay should be 3-4 typed pages).

At Schoolsville, you probably want to respond to these questions:

1. What is your favorite work of art?

2. Give a brief description or overview.

3. Why is this work your favorite? How does it make you "think" (appeal to your intellect) and/or "feel" (appeal to your emotions)? Briefly and specifically explain your answers.

To get an idea of how to respond properly to this blog, you may check out the archives for August 2012 and August 2013 and read some of the responses to this blog entry made by the Classes of 2015 and 2016.

The image that you're viewing is of Jamie Wyeth's Portrait of a Pig(currently on display at the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, PA), one of my personal favorite "works of art." More to come about my thoughts in class.

My favorite piece of art is the song “My Dearest” played by the Japanese band Supercell and composed by the Japanese songwriter Ryo. The song is brought to life by the powerful voice of Koeda, a female Japanese vocalist. “My Dearest” is categorized as a J-Pop/J-Rock song and consists of multiple instruments including the drums, guitar, bass, violin, and piano. The lyrics sung by Koeda are the comforting words of a young girl to her distressed lover. In the beginning of the song, the girl explains to her lover that she had never felt the sort of happiness she feels with him before in her life. The narrator gained confidence in the fact that she was alone until her lover found her, and now it is her turn to pull him out of the darkness and hopelessness around him. The beautiful sound of the music and the depth behind the lyrics are two reasons why this song is my favorite masterpiece. Even though I did not initially understand the meaning of the lyrics in “My Dearest”, I understood the message and the emotions behind it. Whenever I listen to “My Dearest”, I feel ecstatic and a warmth arises in my heart, giving me hope that I will experience the intimate love that only two individuals can feel for one another.

One of my favorite artworks is the video game, Fallout. It was created by Bethesda Game Studios in the fall of 2008. There are many things about Fallout that make it artistically special, even if it is a video game. The game is the aftermath of a nuclear war, and tracks the survivors. The storyline is so engrossing and invigorating, it would take days to fully explore and enjoy it. The scenery is darkly beautiful, the ruins of buildings, and singed and scorched earth strikes me in a way that isn't sadness or hate, but more mournful and solemn. The soundtrack behind my wanderings, honestly makes me feel chilled and, again, mournful. The music is the tone and feel of a beautiful world, ruined by man. Both the scenery and music combine into making me feel an immense guilt, even though I had no part in the destruction. The world of Fallout gives you opportunities to make choices that affect the entire landscape. It makes me question my own morals and puts me directly into a situation that hopefully wouldn't happen to me in real life. This is good however, because it makes smaller choices in my life easier, by knowing that it could definitely be worse. It makes me wonder what, kind of person I will turn out to be, a caring a generous person, or a person who acts without thinking of others. This game is great because the character is you, and runs based on your thoughts and choices. It is truly immersive and keeps me wondering what world will the future hold, and how will I turn out as a result.

My favorite work of art is the film Moneyball. I really enjoy this film because it is about baseball, and that is one of my favorite sports. In the movie, Brad Pitt plays the role of Billy Beane(the Oakland A's General Manager), and does a tremendous job portraying what it is like to be a General Mangaer in the MLB. The great part about this movie is that it shows how even when a professional baseball team has little to no money, they are able to put together a squad of rag-tag players and still be able to compete for the playoffs. The main reason Moneyball is my favorite work of art in general is because it is inspirational. For example, after I watched the movie Moneyball I wanted to become a General Manager of a Major League Baseball team. I think the movie does a great job covering all the parts of putting together a winning ball team. They show how all the scouts get together and talk about who they can use to replace who, and I found that really neat. Another thing I found fascinating, was how they were able to use so many different numbers and stats in a system called saber metrics to find out the true values in all of the players. That is why Moneyball is my favorite work of art, and I hope that one day I too can put together a winning squad, just as Billy Beane himself did.

My favorite work of art is a cartoon on the channel Nickelodeon, Spongebob Squarepants. The creator of this cartoon is Stephen Hillenburg. I have always liked the television show a lot, and I have been watching it ever since I was a little kid. Even though it is aimed towards younger kids, I still like to watch it occasionally because it reminds me so much of my childhood. It is always so full of action and the characters are very creative and cute. Although it was created in the year 1999, new episodes are still being created, and the series consists of ten seasons so far. All of the characters are full of personality, and they all have different quirks about them that make them interesting. One of my favorite characters is the main character, Spongebob. He is always bubbly and optimistic, and also very funny. Since my sense of humor is quite immature, I laugh more than I should when I watch the show. A good quality about the show is that it not only appeals to young children and some teenagers, but also some adults. This attribute is necessary to make an interesting, funny, and classic television show.

My favorite work of art is the awe-inspiring show, Lord of the Dance. The spectacle first stole my heart when I was given front row tickets to the show. Every breathtaking movement put me into a state of shock and speechlessness. It leaves you only with pondering thoughts and the curiosity of how on earth they leap so high and treble so fast. Only the brilliant Michael Flatley could create such a timeless show like this one. The show's a "good versus evil love story," as stated by one of the cast members. And so it all begins in the opening scene with the Little Spirit blowing on the flute, calling to the Lord of the Dance. The Dark Lord and his followers are trying to steal the land from the Lord of the Dance. As a distracting threat, the Temptress tries to steal the heart of the Good Lord from Saoirse, his love interest. After many nail-biting battles, The Lord of the Dance eventually wins the war, along with the guarantee of peace over the land of Ireland. Even though I've seen this show twice, I could see it a thousand more times. The show gives me a spine-tingling reaction that I just can't shake. The hair raises on my arms and it almost physically moves me. The thought-provoking movements leave me dumbfounded and wanting to see more. I can only hope to one day make it out of the audience and into the spotlight.

My favorite piece of art work would be the film Miracle, directed by Gavin O'Connor. This film is based off the 1980's Olympic Men's Ice Hockey team. The coach (played by Kurt Russell) Herb Brooks has to overcome many obstacles throughout the film. Some of which include injury, doubt, and team differences. Through all their hardships the Americans still mange to pull out a win over the favored team, the Soviets. The Soviets had recently destroyed the Americans 10-3 at an exhibition game before the Olympic Games. It truly is a Cinderella story with many triumphs. The main reason I believe I am so drawn to this movie is because not only does it appeal to my emotional side, but it also appeals to my factual and intelligent side. I grew up a huge hockey fan so it's refreshing to see a hockey movie that isn't all made up and just about the hits. The facts are pretty close to the actual events that happened. Of course something's will be over-dramatisized, but the director and writers did a great job of combining factual information while keeping it interesting . The acting also plays a crucial role in making the film so captivating to the audience. Each character had an important role to play so everyone could connect to the movie. I could relate to the character's stress they put on themselves because being a teenager alone is very stressful. Lastly hockey players aren't of bad to look at so that gave the film some spark to make it more exciting .

There are many different types of art, from paintings (which are typically thought of as art), to music, to television, to films. The film Gettysburg is one of my favorite works of art. This movie, from 1993, chronicles the story of the Civil War battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1863. This battle was very important as it was the turning point of the Civil War. The battle raged on for three days, and the film covers the main events of each day. It also focuses on the 20th Maine regiment, led by Colonel Joshua Chamberlain (played by Jeff Daniels), and their role in helping the Union Army win the battle by holding its left flank. It presents these historical events of the battle in an entertaining and enjoyable way. I like this film because it is about one of my favorite topics, American history. I first saw this movie in seventh grade when we learned about the Civil War, and I have really liked it ever since. This film helps me picture how grueling the Civil War was and how hard both sides fought to preserve what they believed was right. It makes me remember how hard the Americans that came before me had to work to make the United States what it is today. I am really appreciative of my country and all the liberties that it gives me. This movie also helps me remember to persevere, as the 20th Maine did when they worked extremely hard to defend the left flank. They were running low on ammunition, and therefore exacted a bayonet change. This prevented the Confederate Army from taking the high ground and led the Union to win the battle and eventually the war. The film Gettysburg is one of my favorite works of art, and it really helps me remember what a great country I live in and that I should always keep on going, especially when the going gets tough.

Before I started playing violin, I though art was just visual. I thought of Picasso, Monet, and Warhol, just to name a few, when I heard the word artist. When I got into music, however, I broadened my understanding of art and artist to not only fit the musical and visual forms of art, but to fit all branches of art. My favorite piece of art is a piece of music by Vittorio Monti called Czàrdàs. Czàrdàs is a fairly standard piece of music in which many violinists play often throughout their careers. This work of art is also a Hungarian dance used in many courtship rituals. Czàrdàs starts off slowly and then moves on to a faster section. The changes in rhythm, dynamics, tempo, and tone make this work of art exciting. I feel relaxed in the slower, more graceful parts of the piece of music, but when the runs of sixteenth notes are played, I feel a rush of energy. Although the various sections of Czàrdàs differ greatly, there is a cohesiveness to it that binds the piece of music together. Whenever I listen to a piece of music, especially Czàrdàs, I can't help but to think of a story relating to the music. The story I think of with Czàrdàs is a war, where the upbeat parts of the music are during the battles. Every story and prospective is different, just like the interpretations of how Czàrdàs is played. The different interpretations make this work of art unique and interesting not only to listen to, but also to play, as the musician has the freedom to bend the style and length of the notes, up to a certain point. Czàrdàs is not only well known by most violinists, but it is a beautiful work of art that should not be left unheard.

My favorite work of art is the movie 21 Jump Street. This movie has many popular actors such as Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, and Dave Franco. 21 Jump Street is about two police officers who are sent back to high school for an undercover operation involving a gang of drug dealers. When Officer Jenko; Tatum, and Officer Scmidt; Hill, relive their high school years, their roles as class jock and school nerd are reversed when the mix up their identities are switched. 21 Jump Street appeals to me because it makes me laugh. I enjoy comedy movies because my favorite thing to do is laugh. I have watched this movie countless times. Although I have watched 21 Jump Street so many times, I laugh just as hard each time. Also, each time I watch 21 Jump Street, I discover a new part that I did not realize before. Whenever I watch this movie, it makes me think about chances. After seeing this, I believe that everyone has a life full of chances, so if we mess up, we still have opportunities to fix it. In 21 Jump Street, both of the officers are best friends. Throughout their experience during the operation, officers Jenko and Scmidt have some experiences that test their relationship. In the end, the police officers reconnect and strengthen their relationship. This makes me believe that friendship is most important out of anything, and that is why 21 Jump Street is my favorite work of art.

My favorite work of art is music. To be more specific, hip hop and rap music. Hip hop is a very rhythmic and lyric focused type of music. Rapping is a way of saying or chanting lyrics. I would not consider rapping as a type of singing though. DJ's and MC's are a main part of hip hop. Hip hop was created in the 70's in New York because of the increasingly popular block parties. Some of the first hip hop artists were DJ Hollywood, Grandmaster Flash, and The Sugarhill Gang. Schoolly-D later created the more known style of rapping which is heard today where more explicit language is used and where most of the topics are inappropriate. Some popular rappers and hip hop artists in today's generation are Kayne West, Eminem, Big Sean, and Schoolboy Q. My favorite artist is probably Eminem. Hip hop is my favorite type of art because I like feeling and listening to the artist's emotions through their lyrics. Some clever or funny lines might cheer me up, or some deep and thoughtful lyrics might make me think more about my life or society Etc. I like to hear all the different rappers' view and opinions on things. Overall, I like hip hop because of the creativity in the lyrics and how quickly it could change my mood.

My favorite work of art is a book entitled Peak by Roland Smith. It tells the story of a young boy who climbs and tags skyscrapers because he has no mountains to climb in New York City. Once he is caught, instead of going to juvenile detention, Peak's usually absent father volunteers to take him out of the country until his eighteenth birthday. Peak and the judge agree although Peak is wary of the man who has not been a part of his life. Peak's father takes him to Tibet where his father's mountain tour company is about to leaf an Everest exhibition. Peak's father secretly wants him to climb the mountain because he wants to be famous for being the father of the youngest person ever to climb Mt. Everest. In the end, Peak is a tale of sacrifice, honor, and love set on the highest mountain on Earth.
This is my favorite work of art because I dream of having adventures like Peak. Despite his family troubles he's been a huge inspiration to me even though he is fictional. Throughout the book, he faces troubles that no 15 year old should ever face. Peak shows everyone, including his father that sometimes friendship is more important than a trophy. I won't give away the ending, but this book has changed me forever.

My favorite piece of art is the movie Moulin Rouge. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, the beginning is very fast paced, with the protagonist telling you of his woes and spoiling the ending of the movie in the first five minutes of his opening monologue. The beginning takes place in 1900 where the lead character, Christian a British play writer, is telling you about his time a year ago (1899) in Paris, France. This movie is based off of the musical Moulin Rouge, but it doesn’t necessarily follow the play. With amazing cinematography, fantastic costumes and makeup, and beautiful music arrangements of modern songs this movie is appealing to just about everyone. The plot is even more wonderful, and even though everyone already knows the end it just makes you want to watch the movie even more, it gets you to want to know just why and how the ending turns out the way it does. Whenever I watch this movie I cry. I know what’s going to happen even before I put the DVD into the DVD player, but I still always cry 128 minutes later. This movie also makes me think, ‘that if we knew what was going to happen before we do something would we do it?’ I’m sure that we wouldn’t do many of the things that are part of our daily routine if we knew what they would all lead up to. That is why this is my Moulin Rouge is my favorite piece of art.

Art can come in may different forms; music, paintings sculptures, movies. My favorite type of art is music, because the lyrics always manage to speak to me. My favorite work of art is the song You & I. This song was written by my favorite music group, One Direction. I love all of their songs because they always cheer me up and put me in a really good mood. I specifically chose this song as my favorite work of art because i love the different vocal ranges that they reach and I also love the guitar in the background. You & I is more of a slow, sentimental song that portrays that it is okay to be different. I like how calming it is when I listen to it and overall thing it's a beautiful song. I think that the boys' voices sound really good and that is another reason they are my favorite musical artist. Their songs inspire me to never lose hope, especially You & I. It is a deep song that really speaks to me emotionally. It brings out happy feelings, curious feelings, and sometimes even sad feelings depending on the mood I am in. Regardless of what mood I am in, however, this song is still considered a beautiful work of art to me.

I enjoy listening to music, watching movies, and exploring artwork, but the most important thing that puts a smile on my face would be reading. My favorite work of art in that particular category would be The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. This novel tells the story of two cancer patients who fall in love and go on a journey that will last a lifetime. I found out about this story when my friend dropped her books and I picked it up for her. I asked how she liked and she responded with these three words, "I. Love. It." A few weeks later, I finally got the book after waiting for what seemed like forever and finished it in about a day. When I finished The Fault in Our Stars, I was absolutely astonished at how John Green was able to fit so many emotions into three hundred and eighteen pages. It was one of the stories that made me mad, happy, and sad. At one point I would be laughing and in the next page I would have tears blurring my vision. This is one of the many reasons why I liked this book. Reading about these two normal teens put the idea in my head that we cannot take life for granted because we are not sure what lies ahead of us in the future.

My favorite work of art is the famous "Relativity" painting. This painting is also known as the "Crazy Stairs" or the "Stairs to Nowhere." The painting shows characters that are all moving on the stairs in different directions and some that even look like they are upside down. It was created by M.C. Esher in 1953 and is a very popular optical illusion. The painting is a lithograph which means that it was produced with specially prepared stone or a metal plate to create the image. M.C. Esher also created "Convex and Concave" and "Drawing Hands," but "Relativity" is definitely my favorite of the three illustrations. I like this painting because it really makes you think and it is very hard to comprehend the entire work of art. It has been used in a lot of television shows and it is one of the first optical illusions I ever saw. The painting also reminds me of the stairs in the Harry Potter movies which is one of my favorite movie series. I always thought it would be fun to be able to walk on these stairs and see how they work and look close up. Optical illusions always interest me because they are very different and unusual. Overall this image is both my favorite optical illusion and my favorite work of art.

My favorite work of art is the song Amnesia performed by 5 Seconds of Summer. Some people stereotype them to be a "boy band" who sings cheesy love songs, when in reality their music is actually thought provoking. "Amnesia" was written by Joel and Benji Madden and was released on iTunes in the United States on July 22, 2014. This song is about a relationship that had to end because they moved away from each other. The boy wishes that he could wake up and forget about what they had. He wishes that he could wake up with amnesia. These lyrics fascinate me because not many musical artists today use metaphors when writing songs about relationships. While the lyrics are the most popular part of a song, no song would be possible without the music behind them. The song starts off with one guitar playing a series of four notes then as they start singing the first verse another guitar is added to play the same series of four notes to give it more of an emphasis. As the chorus begins, the drummer uses a softer mallet to drift across the top of the drum to give the song a magical, loving feel and a steady guitar chord is played. The way the music changes with the lyrics intrigues me. It is like the music is telling the story all by itself. When ever I listen to Amnesia relaxes me with its soft tone and always leaves me with a warm feeling inside.

My favorite work of art is the coming-of-age novel Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. Fangirl is about an eighteen-year-old girl named Cather, or Cath as she prefers to be called. She and Wren, her identical twin sister, are going off to college and for the first time in their lives, they won't be doing everything together. The story follows Cath as she continues to write her popular fanfiction, worries about her single father living alone, and attempts to avoid social contact since she is very bashful. This book is my favorite work of art, not only because I love the storyline, but because I can relate to Cath. I can be very shy when it comes to meeting new people or trying new things and I love to read and write like she does. I also tend to worry a lot so as Cath stresses about her father, I was worried over it, too. Throughout Fangirl, I could feel the emotions that Cath feels like anger, sadness, and happiness. For example, when something joyful happened, I found myself smiling as I read along. When most people think of a work of art, they typically think of a painting, not a novel. I believe that a true work of art should make you feel an emotion. Fangirl made me experience many.

I like many kinds of art, but my favorite work of art is movies. I have always liked movies since I was a little boy and still like them to this day. I have a lot of favorite movies, but one of my favorite movies is "Rudy". This movie came out in the year 1993 and was directed by David Anspaugh. "Rudy" is about a young man named Rudy who's dream goal is to play football at the University of Notre Dame. At first Rudy is declined to attend Notre Dame, so he attends Holy Cross just down the road from Notre Dame. His goal is to attend Holy Cross, work really hard, then apply to Notre Dame, and hope to get in for his sophomore year. After countless hard work and rejections letters he finally gets the one letter that sings music to his ears. When he goes to Notre Dame his next goal is to walk on and play football for Notre Dame. After hard work he gets on the team and plays in the last game. I really like this movie, not for the obvious reason that I am a huge fan of Notre Dame but it portrays the message of never giving up and to always strive for goals. In my life I always set goals of myself to achieve and work really hard to accomplish them. I also like this movie because I like watching movies that make me feel good and inspired to try my hardest. I also liked this movie because it portrays to always go father then you have already done, because once one goal is achieved their are possibilities for others. Whenever I watch this movie it gives me the chills especially at the end of the movie when everyone is chanting Rudy for him to go into the game. Every time after watching this movie I have inspiration and confidence in what I do so that one day my goals will be achieved too.

I would consider my favorite work of art The Walking Dead, a television series directed by Frank Darabont. During the season, it comes on AMC at 9.00 PM Sunday nights. The Walking Dead television series is based on Robert Kirkman's comic book series that is also called The Walking Dead. The show stars Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, the sheriff of a small town in Georgia, who wakes up from a coma in a world where the dead come back to life. The show follows Rick as he learns about the new world he has woken up to, and then on his journey to find his wife Lori and his son Carl. Spoiler Alert: Rick finds his family in a heartfelt scene that literally makes me cry every time I watch it. The show has had four seasons and the fifth season starts on October twelfth. The show has had many different sets that, unlike most shows, the sets are actual locations in Georgia, not in a studio. I like The Walking Dead because not only is it thrilling and gory, which is awesome, but it makes me think about my own morals and values while Rick makes hard life and death decisions. When Rick, or any other character, decides whether someone should live or not, I argue with myself and my friends over whether we would be able to make the same decision or if we would disagree with the choice. Over-all, The Walking Dead is a show that makes me angry, upset, confused, and curious as to what is going to happen to Rick and his group next Sunday at nine.

My favorite piece of art is the song Feel Good Inc by the band Gorrilaz. The song itself is good because it is very catchy, but the real reason that the song is an amazing example of a work of art is the meaning behind the lyrics and the video itself. The song starts with a little riff played on the guitar of one of the lead singers named Murdoc, and you see another one of the singers named 2D get up and walk to the outside of the building the characters are in. He looks outside longing to be free, however he cannot be and the singer name De La Soul who is featured in the song begins rapping causing 2D to lose control of his body and he is forceably dragged back into the building. Once you see 2D is completely under control, one of the guitarists named Noodle is shown sitting on the edge of a floating island in the sky with a single windmill just playing a relaxing tune on her guitar. Nearly everything in the video and the lyrics are symbolic of something. The entire video is a critique on modern day society. It takes a little analysis (which means watching the video an unhealthy amount of times) but once you realize it, its impossible not to notice. You see that the only thing that motivates murdoc to get up is the proposition of more women to sleep with. Theres a lot of meaning behind the song that I cannot even begin to touch on in a single comment. However the things that stand out to me include the lyric "You got a new horizon, its ephemeral style". The meaning behind it is that people no longer care what they want to do, or what pleases them. Its about pleasing others and doing whats stylish and confirming to the roles that society assigned you. You dont wear what you want and only wear what the "INC" gives you. The other 2 major symbols in the video include the windmill island and the rap done by De La Soul. Once the rap section begins, 2D loses control of his body completely. 2D longs to be free and doing as his heart desires but is forced to listen to the lies and rules that the INC is giving him. He has no other option if he wants to fit in. He has to listen to them. He has no way out and no control over his own life. The other major symbol is the windmill island in the sky. Noodle is wearing very different clothing and is clearly shown to be happy. She is free from the INC and is able to do what she wants, dresses how she wants and plays what she wants. She cannot be controlled by the INC. Even if you dont listen to Feel Good INC for all the meaning behind it, and its very common knowledge, most people debate the meaning in the comments of the music video, so should that be what you want to know, its easy to find. However, the song itself is very good, and the fact that it can have such inspirational meaning,to be you and not let society control you, makes it my favorite work of art.

One of my favorite works of art is a book called Alana the First Adventure by Tamora Pierce. It was a book that I read once when I was young and was the first book I really enjoyed. The Song of the Lioness series is what really got me into reading. I fell in love with this series and every time I read it I love it more than the last time. It is set in medieval times and is about a young girl who wants to become a knight when she is supposed to stay at home and become a lady. She pretends to be a boy and goes to train at the castle as a page. She works extra hard at all of her studies and does better than all of the boys, even though she is a girl. She becomes friends with the prince, and eventually becomes his squire. She also becomes friends with The Kind of Thieves, one of the main enemies of the crown. One of my favorite parts about this author is that she made two other series that are set in the same place, and the main characters between the three cross paths. one of the main characters in the last of the three series is about Alana's daughter. Alana puts in more work than required and works very hard to become as good as the boys, but in the process, becomes even better. The Song of the Lioness is a story about a young girl who goes against tradition and defies all odds to follow her dreams.

Art comes in many forms, but my favorite piece of art is the 2008 movie Taken, starring Liam Neeson. Neeson plays the role of Bryan Mills, a divorced father and former CIA agent, who is searching for his daughter Kim who was kidnapped by human traffickers in France with her friend. One of the main reasons this movie is my favorite artwork is because I like action and suspense movies along with comedies. I think this film is one greatest action-suspense movie of all time. Also Liam Neeson is perfect for this role and is great at saying his lines, especially in the scene where he is on the phone with the main antagonist, Marco. The movie utilizes the musical aspect of the film too by creating a very suspenseful mood and exciting atmosphere while you watch it. In the midst of all the action and suspense, there is another side to the story that shows the love between a father and daughter and that a father will do anything to get his daughter back. I think this is a great film for you to watch because it will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end.

Batman Begins, Dark Knight, and Dark Knight Rises are my favorite works of art. Even though there are three movies it's really just one big story. Out of all three movies, The Dark Knight Rises is my favorite by far. Bruce Wayne/ Batman was in hiding ever since the woman he loved, Rachel, died in the second movie. He comes out of hibernation when Gotham City is threatened. The daughter of his old enemy is trying to get revenge on him. She uses Bane to do her dirty work and she isn't suspected of being in charge of the destruction of Gotham till the end. Her plan was to blow up the city. She and her father wanted to get rid of Gotham because they believed it was too corrupt. With Cat Woman's help Batman stops the bomb from exploding in Gotham city and kills the woman behind it all. Batman also fakes his death and he and Cat Woman move far away and create new identities and live their lives together. This movie is my favorite out of the trilogy because it's the most action packed and exciting. I also like all the actors in it like Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, and Joseph Gordan Levitt. I really like the cast, the characters, and the plot of the movie. It's my favorite movie and also my favorite work of art.

My favorite work of art is the broadway musical The Lion King. This musical is based off the animated Disney movie. The Lion King has been performed on broadway since 1997 and is going to be retired after this year. I saw the performance this past month and I was instantly taken by the amazing talent of every actress and actor in The Lion King. The portrayal of the movie itself was also amazing. The songs and the scenes were brought to life in a whole new way. The stage and costume design was also amazing. The costumes of all the animals were so creative along with the sets. Each of the costumes depicted the animals so well. the stage seemed to transform for each scene. I love this musical because it was so amazing how they transformed an animated movie of animals into a broadway musical. Also, the actor weren't just on the stage, they were in the audience, too. This show appeals to me because I was never bored during the show. There was always something about it that captured my attention, whether it was the amazing costumes, or the moving set, or all the song and dance numbers. Its entertaining for all ages. This is why The Lion King on Broadway is my favorite piece of art.

My favorite work of art would have to be the Legend of Zelda games. These games revolve around Zelda, the princess; Link, the hero; and Ganondorf, the villain. Link must go on a journey to save Zelda, facing many puzzles, bosses, and new lands along the way. One of my favorite Zelda games would be Twilight Princess. In this game, Link must save his world, Hyrule, from the corrupt dimension called the Twilight Realm. He must also save the people of Hyrule who are now trapped in this shadow dimension. These adventures involve many varied puzzles, some of which become very troubling to solve. Although they can be tricky, I enjoy the challenges I am faced with throughout the game. They force you to think through all options and ways to get around the obstacles. Not only are the different art styles in these games beautiful, but the soundtrack melds very well with the different situations. The mix of the animations and the music can make me feel excited at the lighthearted parts in the game, and they can make me feel dread before the final boss. I also feel like I am reminiscing through these games, back to the times when was younger and I would play Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on my Nintendo 64. The Legend of Zelda can tell an incredible story while also having superb graphics and challenges, and that is why it is my favorite work of art.

The Breakfast Club has been one of my favorite movies for quite a long time. While movies might not technically be considered art, I think this one is a masterpiece. Its a story that really makes you think and everyone can relate to it in some way or another. In theory a movie about five high schoolers in detention talking about how messed up things are would seem boring or depressing but somehow The Breakfast Club is neither of those things (at least not to me). The characters are all the different stereotypes found in a school yearbook. As labelled in the movie: the brain, the jock, the basket-case, the princess, and the criminal. While going deeper into who these characters really are and past their face value, the movie covers topics that, while somewhat shallow, are still relevant today. Another thing that I really love about this movie is it's consistent theme of honesty and dishonesty. By that I mean how there is so much truth and authenticity to what is said throughout the movie and yet a major part of the plot is people's fear to be sincere and masking that by putting on airs. Something I like to do whenever I watch The Breakfast Club is to try to look at it from a different perspective because this really changes the significance of the characters actions or words. The Breakfast Club, in my opinion, is a movie that is all about people and the way that different people handle interaction and confrontation. It really makes me think and I love things that are able to do that and that is why I would call The Breakfast Club my favorite piece of art.

“She floated down to Camelot: And as the boat-head wound along The willowy hills and fields among, They heard her singing her last song, The Lady of Shalott.” This is my favorite line from my favorite work of art, the poem The Lady of Shalott by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The lady he is talking about is also known as the Lily Maid and Elaine, daughter of Barnard of Ascolat. She is a smaller but important character in the story of King Arthur. The poem tells the story of how she falls in love with the knight, Lancelot even though she cannot leave her tower. She looks out the window and tries to reach him, but cannot because of a curse. When she realizes what has happened she escapes the tower and jumps and dies in a “shallow boat” floating to Camelot. Tennyson is one of my favorite poets, because of the way he writes his poems. They are beautiful even when talking about such a sad tale. He paints a picture with his descriptive writing. When he writes, white is never white but snowy white, and he never says she is surrounded by leaves, but that the “leaves upon her falling light”. The feeling that his writing gives me is indescribable. This poem brings a calming feeling to me every time I read it, but it also causes me to be nervous. The writing is real in the sense that I worry for Elaine every time she sees Lancelot, every time she looks out the window, and every time she jumps in the boat. Although the poem causes me many mixed emotions, it is still my favorite poem.

The term art is very broad and can mean a lot of diffferent things. Howerver of all the works that can be catorgorized as art I would consider comic books to be my favorite. This is not only because I personally enjoy reading comics, but it is also because comic books are unique and versitile. Comic books are unique in that they combine elements of telavision with elements of novels by using pictures and text to tell a story. They show versitility by apealing to a large age group, atracting fans that mostly include preteens, but also have little children and adults make up the comic fandom demographic. Plotlines told in theese books can range from simple tales of superheros fighting bad guys, which are the kind I enjoy reading most, to stories that touch on mature themes such as gambling adiction or dealing with death. For this reason a comic can satisfy a craving for action and they can also expose people's philosophical side. Either way comic books are always a fun read for me and are definitely one of the smartest forms of art. Even thuogh they are sometimes overshadowed by pretensious novels, they still have retained popularity thruogh generations.

My favorite work of art is a small group dance that was competed by my studio, American Dance Academy, two years ago. The piece was entitled "To Build a Home" and was choreographed by our company director/choreographer Mrs. Jess. The song was also called To Build a Home and it is by The Cinematic Orchestra. This piece was about how when our family members die, they are building a home for us in heaven. You have to be able to let go of your loves ones when it's their time to leave earth because you will see them later, someday. This piece is my favorite because I like the people that were in it, it was really good, and it was inspiring for me. It made you think about what happens to our loved ones when they die, and who will be there when we die. It was one of those dances that touches your soul and sends shivers through your body. It's hard to find pieces like that, but when you do they're amazing. It makes you feel like a little kid, helpless and innocent. It might even bring tears; that's when you know a piece is good. To Build a Home is still a dance I think about often, partially because I love the song, and partially because of the emotion it contained. Although some of the dancers have graduated and moved on to college, the dance lives on in my memory and the memories of everyone who saw it.

Art can take the form of many different things such as theater, writings, or drawings. However my favorite form of art is music. Music is able put your emotions into words and no matter what mood or situation you’re in there is always a song you can relate to. I especially love country music due to the style of the music and the lyrics. My favorite artist is country singer, Jason Aldean. His style varies from upbeat party songs, to slower songs with deeper meanings. The topics range from small towns, love, and being young and having fun. The music is always good and his voice is amazing.
Ever since I was little I’ve loved country music. I would listen to it for hours on my phone, or on car rides with my mom weather we’d be going down the road, or to the beach. I started listening to Jason Aldean on the radio and after loving the songs they would play by him I started buying his albums and following his carrier. He’s my favorite because all of his songs are done so well. Each song is different; some make you want to get up and dance, while others make you sit and think. This is why I love him, because no matter where you are in life you can listen to one of his songs and relate to it completely.

My favorite work of art is the 2011 movie War Horse directed by Steven Spielberg, which is based on the 1982 novel by Michael Morpurgo. I read the book before seeing the movie and loved the idea of the story being told from the horse's point of view. It gave a completely new perspective to the action and adventure that takes place in the story. It made me think about how other people and creatures view and interpret the world in various situations, and that what I see isn't necessarily what the person standing next to me sees. Another thing that I found interesting about the story was that when Joey (the horse) becomes tangled in the barbed wire twisted throughout no man's land, the fighting stops and one soldier from both the English and German trenches goes out to free Joey. This scene teaches that despite any and all differences between two groups of people, they can always find a peaceful way to work together to help another person or animal in a serious situation. The end of the story is very moving as well, because despite the fact that Joey and Albert, Joey's owner before he is taken away, have not seen each other in years, they still remember one another and are able to go back home to London together when the war ends.

Art can be anything from paintings, to writings, to even TV shows. One of my favorite works of art is a movie. The movie The Outsiders is not only my favorite work of art it is my favorite movie. The Outsiders is also based off of a book that was publish in 1967 that I have read and enjoyed just as much as the movie. The movie takes place in the sixties in Oklahoma which tells of two totally different social groups the Socs and the Greasers. The Socs, which is short for the Socials, are the richer, more popular kids of the upper class from the west side of town and also the rival gang of the Greasers. While the Greasers are the less popular, poorer kids of the lower class. Throughout the movie it shows the different rivalries between the groups and including the different fights they get into. The movies show the different family problems and problems between the gangs that end up cause him and his friend to run away. This movies shows me the differences between the social classes but from the point of view from the lower class. The movies has a lot of parts that makes me feel sad and almost sympathetic. It makes me think of what life was like socially and the different social classes that they split themselves in gangs like that. The Outsiders, even though it is an older book and movie will forever be one of my favorites.

My Favorite work of art would have to be Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night. This painting was painted in June of 1889; this work is considered to be van Gogh’s most famous work and is easily the most recognizable. Van Gogh created this work of art when he was in The Saint Paul de Mausole Lunatic Asylum, van Gogh was staying there because of his breakdown last December that resulted in him mutilating his ear by removing his earlobe and sending it to the woman he loved. He painted this work in a matter of three days. You can go see this painting in the Museum of Modern art in New York City. This is my favorite painting because I love the colors and the fascinating story behind the painting. This painting makes me think about what is happening as I sleep like how while I sleep there are people all around the world doing things that I don’t know about that can be really important and life changing. This painting fills me with an overwhelming sense of calm this is because all of the cool Blue colors that remind me of night, sleeping and most importantly being at home with my family.

My favorite work of art is the movie The Fifth Quarter. It is about a boy named Luke. He's in high school who plays football and afternoon a practice he gets in a car with his friends and the driver is a boy he does not know. The driver tries to show off by going as fast as possible over a speed bump and the car crashes. All of the boys are okay except for Luke. He is taken in a helicopter to the hospital and put on life support. After a week or two, they are forced to turn off life support and Luke dies. The rest of the movie is about how his family deals with Luke's death and how his big brother wears his number, which is 5, when he plays football. His team the calls the fourth quarter of the game the fifth quarter in honor of Luke. This movie is very life hanging because it helps you realize how quickly you could lose your life and how you should make good choices and not get in cars with people you do not know.

My favorite work of art is the 2005 Bassnectar album, Mesmerizing the Ultra, released as a double album along with his work from the previous year, Diverse Systems of Throb. Lorin Ashton, known in the ever-changing world of electronic music as Bassnectar, has been professionally making music for over fifteen years. Mesmerizing the Ultra was his fifth full-length album under the name Bassnectar, the first of which coming in 2001. The four previous albums brought some notoriety to Ashton and his music, especially in the IDM and breakbeat scenes; around that time period, he was known to at some times play as many as three shows a night in underground concerts held in locations like abandoned warehouses. However, Mesmerizing the Ultra skyrocketed Ashton's success in a wide range of electronic music enthusiasts. The initial release contained seventeen songs, though with the amount of commercial success the album was having, Ashton decided to add a slightly-altered track listing of his previous album, Diverse Systems of Throb, saying that the material on that album was too special to get lost. I am so glad he made that decision. With a total playing time of over two and a half hours, spread over thirty-three songs, it is a monster to listen to, but it is filled to the top with magical music. A great number of my personal favorite songs of all time appear on the two discs: "Mesmerizing the Ultra", "Inaugural Day Beatdown", "Leprechauns Arise", "Interpret", and "Parade into Centuries" on the first disc and "Replenish", "Laughter Crescendo", "Creation Lullaby", "Simultaneous", "Dubuasca", "Nostalgia Worship", and "Skin" on the second. The album also has a great deal of political insight in its lyrics, something Ashton made a name for himself for doing. This album never fails to entertain me, make me emotional, make me want to dance, or just leave me speechless. Mesmerizing the Ultra is without a doubt the most inspiring, intriguing, and beautiful album I have ever listened to, making it an easy choice for my favorite work of art of all time.

I hardly have a favorite anything because I'm so indecisive, but if I had to choose one favorite piece of art it would be Les Mis. It is the story of a man named Jean val Jean and the many obstacles he faces in his life during the time of the French Revolutionary War. I have read the book and seen the broadway musical. I first read the book by Victor Hugo in the fall of seventh grade because we decided to see play. I wanted to read the book first so I would have a better comprehension of the story when we saw it. I do not read often because it's rare that I find a book that interests me, but Les Mis managed to keep me interested with it's never-ending complexity. The stories of the many characters all marvelously intertwine to create one story that seems to only get deeper and deeper. The play extremely moving and entertaining due to the music. The songs are meaningful, beautifully written, and inspirational. Sitting in the audience, hearing those wonderful voices, was a great experience for me. But perhaps the biggest reason I love Les Miserables is because of the theme lying throughout the story. This book and play taught me to have hope. Throughout all the troubles Jean val Jean and the other characters have, they never give up. Les Mis gave me the powerful message that even in the darkest of times, as long as you keep trying, there is always hope for a better day.
