Vocab Unit 1 Yellow Class Only

















Post (over this weekend) ten (10) sentences using ten different vocabulary words correctly, giving a context clue to the meaning of the word within your sentence.

Rows 1-3 should work with words # 1-10. 
Rows 4-6 should work with words # 11-20. 

Your context clue should use restatement, contrast, or inference as explained on p. 7 of your vocab book.

Of course, identify yourself according to your first name, last initial, and section color.

e.g. Usually slightly nervous and uncertain, most ninth graders entering St. Mark's are somewhat taciturn during their initial days in school.

5. Aside from the carping of a few students, our new cafeteria food seems to be very popular.
6. The witness’s story seemed too coherent with the suspect’s story, almost as if they had rehearsed to have the same story.
7. If you put water in freezing temperatures, it will congeal and turn into ice.

9. Instead of criticizing the piece of art the young boy gave the artist encomium.

4. As well written as these stories are, some appear to belabor their themes with the already incorporated explanations.

2. Once a frenzy has started, a piranah's insatiable hunger will not be stopped until nothing is left of the victim.
3. Some of the best lawyers are very intransigent. They will not go half way with anyone.
4. Today's world not very accepting. Most people are invidious and will criticize you for anything.
5. The generous king granted many largesses during his reign to people who helped him.
6. The job of a scout is to go on reconaissance, while a soldier's job is to make himself known and fight.
7. Just when it looked like the case was won the defense pulled out a new piece of evidence that completely substantiated their view.
8. Whenever most people enter a new group or area they are taciturn at first but eventually open up.
9. The government could not temporize the situation any longer, they had to come clean with the public.
10. Do not enter an argument that you will later find out your position is not tenable. you will look like a fool.

1. Acquisitive- He appears to be very acquisitive by how much he spends in luxuries stores.
2. Arrogate- My father arrogated my Halloween candy hoping I would not notice.
3. Banal- Once my favorite song was played every five songs, it became banal.
4. Belabor- I was not able to complete my test because I belabored on one question.
5. Carping- After the teacher heard the carping from his students, he made the next test even harder.
6. Coherent- Whenever I speak in public, I have trouble making my sentences coherent.
7. Congeal- Whenever I make Jell-O, I am always amazed by how fast it congeals.
8. Emulate- Even though I try to emulate Jon Scheyer’s fade away jump shot, it still will not go in.
9. Encomium- At the awards ceremony, the mayor gave a sincere encomium to the firefighters who work every day.
10. Eschew- Whenever my dog passes gas my entire family eschews the Chew.

11. An author should keep the content of their book germane to the main idea, rather than digressing away from the point.

14. Racial remarks are invidious and should be kept away from any conversation.

16. The soldiers had to do their reconnaissance in the forest to make sure it was clear.

11. When writing a paper, it is important that the content of the essay remains germane to the topic at hand, and that nothing strays away from the true purpose of the paper.
12. Surprisingly, the people who have to most insatiable want for money are those who are already wealthy, and not those who need the money the most.
13. Both of the children remained intransigent and kept fighting over their favorite toy.
14. The teacher was fired over her invidious remarks towards the child who was failing her class.
