#1 Sophomore Journal: Your Favorite Work of Art (Post before Sept. 6)

Tell me what you consider to be your favorite work of art. Please don't limit your definition of art to the "fine" arts, like painting. Please feel free to include the "pop" arts, like music, film, cartoons, or television.

You might want to use this post as a "warm up" or pre-writing to the final essay that is due Friday, September 13. However, you may choose to write about something else for the final essay, too.

Complete this blog/journal response before Friday, September 6, so I can post all of your classmates responses for you to read.

Remember, I recommend that you first write your response in a Word document, save it, and then copy and paste it as a comment at Schoolsville. Eventually, I will collect all of your "blog/journal" responses at the end of each marking period as a graded assignment.

Be more succinct here than you will be in your essay--write a MINIMUM of 200 words (your essay should be 3-4 typed pages).

At Schoolsville, you probably want to respond to these questions:

1. What is your favorite work of art?

2. Give a brief description or overview.

3. Why is this work your favorite? How does it make you "think" (appeal to your intellect) and/or "feel" (appeal to your emotions)? Briefly and specifically explain your answers.

To get an idea of how to respond properly to this blog, you may check out the archives for August 2011 and August 2012 and read some of the responses to this blog entry made by the Class of 2014 and 2015.

The image that you're viewing is of Jamie Wyeth's Portrait of a Pig(currently on display at the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, PA), one of my personal favorite "works of art." More to come about my thoughts in class.

When I was younger, I learned to love art. My parents would always take me to art galleries and museums when we were on vacation. In the art room of my old school, there was a picture of Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night. Since then, that has been my favorite piece of art. Starry Night depicts the view of the small town of Saint-Remy in which whirling clouds and bright stars hang overhead. Off to the left, there is an undefined object that looks somewhat like a mountain. When I look at Van Gogh’s painting, it makes me feel calmer. To me, the painting also feels quiet, serene, and peaceful. I also like his style in which he uses visible brushstrokes to accentuate the swirl of the clouds, the blocky outline of houses, and the curve of hills. Van Gogh’s Starry Night has a serene feeling which is why it is my favorite piece of art and it is also popular with many other people.

Ever since I was little, my favorite thing in the world has been reading. Of all the books I’ve read in my life, far too many to even begin to count, the book that has made the biggest impact on me has been Stephen Chbosky’s 1999 novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower. The first time I read The Perks of Being a Wallflower was towards the end of sixth grade. I don’t remember how I stumbled upon it, and from what I can remember of my first time reading it, there were some parts I didn’t understand. Rightly so, being a sixth grader, as there are some pretty heavy topics contained in it. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is about a boy who calls himself Charlie and his journey through freshman year. The story is written in letters, and these letters detail the ways he copes with the different things that are thrown at him, along with knowing that something is wrong with him but not knowing what exactly that is. One thing I do remember of reading it that first time is how drawn to Charlie and his life I was. He made me really care about him. After that first time, I didn’t pick it up again until around the summer going into eighth grade when I saw it in my bookstore and remembered how much I loved it. This time reading it, I understood everything that was happening to him, and I cried. Charlie showed me a whole new world, and through his world, helped me with parts of my own. Of all the lines in Stephen’s remarkable book, one of my favorites is “maybe it’s good to put things in perspective, but sometimes, I think the only perspective is to really be there. Like Sam said. Because it’s okay to feel things. And to be who you are about them.” I think that’s really important. I spend far too much time putting things in perspective, and consequently, too much time worrying about things. I try to remember that it’s okay to feel things, and not to spend so much time worrying about how I am perceived, because the perspective that matters most is mine. I need to be who I am instead of who I think I need to be for the benefit of others.

My favorite work of art is the TV show “Tom and Jerry.” In the show Tom the cat is always trying to find way to trap the clever mouse Jerry. Tom comes up with very sophisticated ideas to trap Jerry, but Jerry always seems to escape the most precarious situations. Jerry would always be able to find his escape back into the walls of the house just before the grip of Tom would get him. The reason this is my favorite work of art is because it reminds me of waking up early on Saturday mornings, and to rush as fast as I could to turn on the TV as a kid; to watch Tom and Jerry and eat breakfast. The show would always have me wondering if Tom would finally catch Jerry. My favorite memory of the show is when Tom was about to catch Jerry for the first time only to be scared away by a little English bulldog puppy. Without this classic television show I would have been very bored on every Saturday morning as I ate breakfast. If you have nothing to do next Saturday I would recommend you watch “Tom and Jerry” on Cartoon Network, and be prepared to laugh!

My favorite Work of art is the German military marching song Der Königgrätzer . Written for the Prussian military in 1866 it was written by Johann G. Piefke. In Indiana Jones “The Last Crusade” this is the song playing during the scene when Indiana and his father go to Berlin. It is this general idea I picture when I hear the song playing. In contrast to the use of the song in the movie I imagine the numerous struggles the Allies faced as they fought courageously through snow and rain, sleet and hail to achieve victory over the armies of darkness. This song when it was written was meant to inspire soldiers and fill them with courage and the belief that they could win any battle if they believed in themselves and their abilities. In my studies of history I have observed that no army has ever even had a chance at achieving victory without first having the hope and the belief that they can be victorious. Two things the Allies needed in order to win World War 2. When I listen to this music I feel like anything is possible. I am filled with the determination and the strength to overcome any obstacles in my path to do what is right no matter how hard doing the right thing may be. I also feel a great sense of pride for my countries past remembering all those who gave their lives for me so that I could be able to write this paper today, and at the same time an even greater respect for what is yet to come. I am filled with the hope and the belief that in the end we as a people of courage and heart will strive to do what is right whenever we are faced with a challenge. For if we do not then we destroy all of the hopes our Founding Fathers had for this country. At the same time we would nullify everything that our brave soldiers and their allies throughout all of time have given so that we may still be able to uphold the hopes and dreams our country was based upon. For I believe that we are in turn required to pass along these hopes and dreams to all future generations and should be willing to lay down our lives for them as has been done for us for the past 232 years.

I consider musicals to be works of art. That being said, one of my favorite works of art is Broadway’s longest running musical The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber. It is based on the original French novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra written by Gaston Leroux. The plot of the musical centers around a young soprano named Christine Daaé, who slowly gains the interest and becomes the obsession of a disfigured musical genius. This musical genius has lived in the opera house since he was young to escape the cruel world that never accepted him due to his disfiguration. It is the only place where his love of music can be shared with others. I really like this piece because it is a whirlwind of emotions. Throughout the musical, I go back and forth between sympathizing for the Phantom and sympathizing for Christine’s situation. I can also really feel and relate to the Phantom, as he descends into a state of madness brought on by the fact that he wants what he cannot have. All the music is beautifully written. From the moment the overture starts to the very last line, it really conveys the mood of the scenes and really draws you in to the world of the Opera Populaire.

My favorite work of art is the rap song “Swimming Pools.” The artist is a rapper named Kendrick Lamar. Unlike other hip-hop artist Kendrick raps about life experience that happen to him while he was growing up in Compton. Compton (Kendrick’s childhood home) was rated most dangerous city in 2006. Kendrick doesn’t rap about girls, drugs, money, or fame like other typical rappers, he raps about how hard his life was while growing up in Compton. He raps about all the peer pressure he had to go through, how nobody thought he would be somebody and make it out of Compton and all the gang violence he had to grow up around. “Swimming Pools” is my favorite song by him because it seems like a song about getting wasted, but when you actually listen to the lyrics close enough, it’s actually a statement about alcohol abuse. In this song he also talks about how easily it is get solve your problems by drinking away at them and etc. This is why this is my favorite song because instead of rapping about getting wasted like a typical rapper, Kendrick raps about how bad alcohol abuse is for people.

Art can be defined in many different ways. Some people define art as a painting or a drawing. Other people define art as anything creative that a person creates for the enjoyment of others. I myself define art as something that someone creates to express themselves in a way that words cannot. When I think of art I think of a musician creating music, a producer creating a movie or television show, or an artist creating a drawing or painting. Out of the many things a person could write about that involves art, I chose to write about a song that is close to my heart. The musician uses words to depict a person who has spent their entire life struggling. Whether it’s about a situation at home, or troubles with people in school, the musician uses phrases to describe feelings that may be common for a lot of teenagers. The song is called Welcome to my Life by a band called Simple Plan. My personal favorite line is “To be hurt, to feel lost, to be left out in the dark. To be kicked when you’re down, to feel like you’ve been pushed around. To be on the edge of breaking down and no one’s there to save you. Now you don’t know what it’s like. Welcome to my life.” I like this part of the song so much because personally I have had experiences in my life, and I am sure many other have as well, in which I’ve felt lost and felt connection to parts of this lyric. Many teenagers could also connect to this lyric. Every teenager at some point can relate to feeling hurt and lost. The person who wrote this song must have been very strong to be able to put this sort of feeling and emotions into words and song. This kind of art is something that I enjoy a lot because I personally think that I can connect better and express myself better through music than I can with words. I like enjoy listening to music and listening to this type of work of art and I know many others do too.

“I came to coach basketball players, and you became students. I came to teach boys, and you became men.” I have seen many movies that have intrigued me, but Coach Carter is definitely my favorite work of art and my favorite movie of all time. I have watched Coach Carter countless times and never get bored of it. It is based on a true story of the Richmond High School basketball team coached by Ken Carter, who is played by Samuel L. Jackson. In 1999, Ken Carter accepts a job to coach his former high school. He quickly realizes that his team is disrespectful, and creates a contract for his team to sign. The contract states that you must have average grades and you must attend all of your classes. Some of the players on the team decide to quit because they refuse to follow the contract. The team started off successfully, going undefeated and winning a tournament. However, Coach Carter finds out that players have been skipping classes and getting failing grades, so he decides to lock the gym until his players start living up to their contracts. Coach Carter would rather have his players to get a good education than relying on sports to be successful in life. Richmond ends up losing in the playoffs to St. Francis. The movie ends up showing that many of Richmond’s players went on to attend college.

My favorite work of art is the movie “My Sister’s Keeper.” I saw this movie for the first time back in 2011. “My Sister’s Keeper” portrays a girl named Kate fighting cancer, and her family trying to come to terms with the fact that their loved one is dying. Kate and her sister, Anna are very close and throughout the movie they help each other through the toughest of times. I have lost four people that were very close to me due to cancer, and could lose a fifth fairly soon. I also am extremely close with my sister, and consider her one of my best friends. So, watching this movie is pretty hard for me, however it is still my favorite movie just because it makes me realize how lucky I am and helps me put things in perspective. I am lucky enough to have the relationship I do have with my sister and know that I won’t have to think about losing her anytime soon. It also makes me think about how short life is and how it could change drastically at any moment. When people say to live every day like it’s your last, you really do have to listen to that because you never know when something or someone could be taken out of your life forever.

What is art? Art can be defined in dozens of ways. Art can be a physical piece of artwork such as a painting or sculpture as well as abstract art. For example Art could be a poem or novel as well as a musical work of . Although I enjoy all forms of art ranging from paintings to symphonies, I consider my favorite work of art to be Agatha Christie’s novel And Then There Were None. In this story ten guests are invited to an island for a weekend. They are not told why or how they know their host but they all gratefully attend. When their host, Mr. and Mrs. U.N. Owen, do not show the guests become frantic and try to uncover why they were each invited. Discovering each had, in some point of their lives, some how been involved in the death of another human being wether it being accidental or not. as they attempt to survive the weekend together trough a harsh tropical storm, these dynamic characters fend for themselves as well as for each other as each guest disappears and dies one by one in correspondence with the poem Ten Little Sailor Boys. In this poem each couplet describes how each sailor dies one by on using simile’s. This work of art, I consider to be my favorite because of the authors ability to trick the reader and confuse them into thinking that they know who the killer is when in reality they do not. Mrs. Christies ability to grab her reader’s attention and hold a firm grasp on it through out the books entirety is impeccable. By including a poem she gives her story a little more rhythm to in that she refers to each couplet through out the novel. This is why i consider Agatha Christie’s novel And Then There Were None, to be my favorite work of art.

Mike R. Yellow My favorite work of art is Seinfeld written by David Lansing and Jerry Seinfeld. I love Seinfeld because it is a show about nothing. Every episode is different from the other. Seinfeld just has a group of friends living their everyday lives. Their group is just perfect. Jerry, George, Illane, and Kramer. They all have their different traits, which make it funny when they talk about topics ad when things happen. Anyone can watch this show and they will laugh tens times out ten. You can watch the same episode over and over again, and you will still laugh even though you already know what is going to happen. It will never get old no matter what. It’s like Forest Gump it’s a great watch every time. There is no plot to the show but however, there really is. I think the show is about friendship. Just in the context and the matter they speak in creates a hilarious atmosphere, no matter what misfortune happens they always have a great time laughing about it in the end. The show really makes you feel like you are in the room with him. Their people in their group are great observers and the tone they speak in just makes it hilarious. The show is actually really hard to explain why it is so funny, but it is just the essence of the episode-to-episode theme that has me dying of laughter. I watch the show every night on TBS after practice and no matter how I’m feeling, I’m always in a good mood after. I suppose Seinfeld is my medicine. I would write about my favorite episode but it is just too hard to choose. I couldn’t even give a favorite season, but I will give my favorite quote: "I've always been a stall man." – George.

The fist time I saw the movie Insidious was down at Rehoboth beach with my friend. I only watched the first 15 minutes of it then I fell asleep. When I woke in the morning my friend told me how good the movie was and how I needed to watch it. Later that night I watched it and loved it. Since then I have watched the move Insidious over 20 times. It is definitely my favorite movie ever and I am really looking forward to the sequel coming out this month. The song “tips toe though the tulips” which is played often throughout the movie, still creeps me out and makes me think of the movie. The idea of the movie had never been done before and is very creative. The idea of the movie is that a father and son can astral project; when somebody leaves their body while they are still alive and walks around in the sprit world, and that while the son does this the a demon captures and locks him ad does not let him go back to his body putting him In a coma like state, spirits begin haunting the the family hoping to get control of the body. The family then has to try to get their son out

My favorite work of art is the movie “The Sandlot.” I have loved “The Sandlot” since the first time I watched it as a kid. I have always loved baseball and this is my favorite movie to this day. It takes place during the summer time around the early 1960’s. A boy named Scotty Smalls moves to town and heads down to the sandlot where he meets the boys, but soon does he realize his summer will take a big twist. The boys are led by Benny “the jet” Rodriguez who eventually grows up to play major league ball. The rest of the team consists of “Ham,” “Squints,” “Yeah-Yeah,” and Tommy and Timmy Timmins. One day Smalls belts one over the fence only to realize he hit a ball signed by Babe Ruth which is “well more than your whole life Smalls.” The boys then continue their summer by trying to get the ball back that has fallen into the hands of the Beast. My favorite scene in the movie is when Benny has the dream when Babe Ruth comes into his room. He tells Benny he has to go get that ball back. He then tells Benny to remember that “Heroes get remembered but legends never die” which is my favorite quote. Benny then does the unthinkable, face the Beast one on one to get the ball back.

My favorite work of art is the television show Grey’s Anatomy. Grey’s anatomy is a show that details the lives of surgical interns and residents trying to work hard and also maintain personal lives. This show is very realistic with everyday possibilities and occurrences. The characters in this show have all kinds of common problems. For example, Isabel, one of the characters on the show, had to do whatever she could to pay off her student loans. This artwork especially appeals to me because I want to be a surgeon when I am older. It is no secret that medical school is expensive. This show makes me feel that there is a way to achieve my dreams despite financial obstacles. I am very interested in medical profession and it is very hard to find shows like Grey’s Anatomy that are informative, entertaining, and realistic. This show inspires me to really work hard and also provides insights to how my life could be one day. People have often told me that I will not have a great social life if I go into the medical profession. This show proved to me and others that my career is what I make of it. If I work hard, I can have any life I desire for myself. The characters in this show inspire me to strive for the best and to never give up on my dreams.

Art is something that can be expressed in several different ways. It can be expressed through writing, paintings, sculptures, acting, and music. I don’t really have a favorite piece of art, but one that I do find very interesting is the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty is no ordinary statue. It has history and a true meaning to it. Sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was commissioned to design a sculpture to represent freedom. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886. It was a gift to the United States from the people of France. They did have trouble finding funds for such an expensive project, but they eventually raised the money needed. The Statue of Liberty was made in France and then was shipped to America, where it was assembled. It is presently located on Liberty Island Manhattan, New York. I really like this statue because it has so much meaning to it. It represents our country’s freedom and what we are all about. It also shows how close our relationship to France was. The statue is a true work of art. It’s hard to believe that someone was talented enough to even make this. Everyone should see the Statue of Liberty in person at least once in their life.

For someone who wants to be an actress, movies and television are something I very much enjoy. To some people television is a leisurely activity, but for me it is another subject to study from. Television is an art, but within television you are seeing many other different forms of art including: acting, directing, costume design, writing, and much more. My favorite work of art is the television show One Tree Hill. This show is about half- brothers Lucas and Nathan who must overcome the obstacles they and their friends face. Some of the obstacles they face include: death, deception, bullying, and betrayal. Watching this show makes me think, about everything. What if that happened to me? What would I do? How would I feel? This show demonstrates every day struggles and tragedies that many of us face in our lives. It is really easy to take your life, your opportunities, your friends, and your family for granted. I think this show provides you with examples as to why we should be grateful and live our lives to the fullest. I find this show inspiring and easy to relate to because of the many tragedies I myself have overcome.

I’ve always loved music, especially when in came in the form of rock and roll. I don’t have some childhood story to tell about how rock and roll changed my life, more of a little story about how one of my now favorite songs really inspired me. That song would be “Life is Beautiful” by Sixx A.M. Now why, or how, could a song by someone who obviously didn’t pay attention in English class inspire someone? First, a little back story. Nikki Sixx, the one that started Sixx A.M. was originally in the band: Motley Crue. He had a lot of problems with drugs and even went so far as to overdose. After being, pretty much, brought back to life from that same overdose, he realized that it was time for change. He wrote a book documenting his life of drug addiction, and finally wrote an entire album based off of his experiences. That is where the song comes from. I found this all absolutely amazing. For a man to die and basically be reborn through that death is fantastic. There’s a line in the song, “there’s nothing like a funeral to make you feel alive,” which really represents how he almost died after overdosing. So yes, this song is art at its highest form, in my opinion. The whole song truly explains to us that life really is beautiful. That’s what makes this song my favorite piece of art. Look it up, listen to it, it may just become your favorite piece of art as well.

There are tons of movies that send positive messages or have a fantastic theme. One of my favorite movies that has a meaningful story or sets excellent example is The Perks of Being a Wallflower. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is about a young man named Charlie who is a freshman in high school. Charlie sadly didn't have any friends because his only friend suddenly killed himself the summer before freshman year. Charlie's best and only friend dying really put him through a lot. Because of his death Charlie became depressed. So Charlie went into high school with absolutely no friends. The first few days of high school were torture for him. Finally a group of upperclassman took him under their wing. Because the seniors helped Charlie out he finally started to become happy again and make new friends. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is my favorite movie because it is so emotional. I love the way the upperclassman didn't care that Charlie was a freshman. I know that barely any seniors will even look at freshman unless and is to make fun of them. So I just think it's great how they can just forget all the stereo types and help Charlie out.

My favorite piece of art is a song. It is called “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin. I like it because it has lyrics that resemble lines of a poem. They contain lots of imagery and figures of speech. The following is an example of some lines:
And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune,
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long,
And the forests will echo with laughter.
The line above talks about leaving and entering into a new life. The ”piper” is an allusion to the popular story of the Pied Piper who played his flute and made all of the kids follow him out of the town in which they lived. They are saying that someone will lead them out of misery into a new day for those who wait. The new day is full of laughter and happiness much like we imagine Heaven. In my opinion, the piper represents Jesus leading those who wait into Heaven while those who try to “buy” their way in find that it is closed to them. They also mention taking two paths. It says that you can choose paths but in the long run you can always switch back. This represents to me how we always have time to change our ways and get back on the correct path. This song represents a lifelong journey that will eventually lead us to happiness and joy but only if we wait.

My favorite work of art is a popular musical “Footloose”. This movie is about a boy, Ren McCormack, who moves from Boston to a small town where dancing and rock music has been banned. In this movie, the reverend, Shaw Moore, convinces the city council to ban rock music and dancing after his son, Bobby Moore, died in a car crash after a night of partying three years before Ren moves to the town. Ren later meets Rev. Moore’s daughter, Ariel Moore, who still continues to dance and listen to music without her father knowing. Ariel, Ren, and many other people, who do not believe in the no dancing law, try to persuade city council to lift the dancing and music ban. After being denied by city council, the group of teenagers still want to host a senior prom. The group eventually discovers that they can host their senior prom in a nearby area, where dancing and singing is allowed, which is where they host their senior prom. Personally, I think that this movie is a great example of freedom of expression, fighting for what you believe in, and never giving up. This is a very inspiring movie that teaches you to never give up on what you think is right despite what other people think.

My favorite work of art would have to be The Thinker, by Auguste Rodin. The Thinker is a bronze sculpture of a man sitting down on a pedestal in a thoughtful manner; one of his arms rests his chin as the man “thinks”. The sculptor, Auguste Rodin, created this work of art based on Dante’s The Divine Comedy. This appeals to be because the man appears to be very deep in thought, almost as if pondering something extremely important. This gives a certain feeling of puzzlement to try to guess what the bronze man could be thinking of, and to how important our own thoughts are. In the modern times, when moving and acting quick and on impulse is applauded and appraised, looking at The Thinker reminds me slow down a little and actually think about all my problems and the solutions to them. This sense of contemplation helps me focus on things better, and consequently helps me in solving my life’s dilemmas. The stress I would get from trying to handle all these things at once would dissipate once I slowed down and thought about them for a little bit. The Thinker reminds us all that taking it slow and steady can often be better, and that is why it is my favorite work of art.

Being a cellist, I listen to a lot of classical music. Classical is good, but my favorite genre of music is celloboxing. Kevin Olusola, a cellist, created this unique genre. In celloboxing, he combines his beat boxing skills with beautiful cello music. Kevin also plays modern pop songs on the cello; for example, he has played "Diamonds" by Rihanna. The thing that makes Kevin’s songs unique is how he manipulates the cello to create perfect pitches and sound effects. Very few players can create such crisp sounds from an instrument like this, and only one can beat box while maintaining perfection.

My favorite work of art is the storybook series “Fable Haven” by Brandon Mull. The story begins with Kendra and Seth visiting their grandparents in Connecticut while their parents take a 17 day cruise. At first the siblings entertain themselves with an attic full of interesting books and toys, and a pond-like swimming pool surrounded by hummingbirds, brightly colored-butterflies and exotic dragonflies. But soon their attentions wander to the forbidden forest that surrounds their grandparent's house. When Kendra discovers a book entitled Journal of Secrets and follows the directions to "Drink the milk" a whole new hidden and amazing world is revealed to the siblings at Fable Haven. Kendra and Seth find out quickly how dangerous this new magical environment is when rules are broken, thrusting them into the middle of a fight for their lives. There are five books total to the series, making it possible for large plots of action, mystery, and danger spread out through the books. The first book of the series caught my attention because of the main characters, average children who find out that the magical creatures from fairytales and storybooks are real and in the worlds they live in. I have been a fan of the mystery/action genre because there can be multiple plot twists and cliff hangers (if there are multiple books) that just keep adding to the excitement of reading.

Every time I listen to the musical Les Miserables, I end up crying. Between the seemingly endless deaths scattered throughout it’s almost impossible not to. However, one characters death gets me every time. Because almost the entire musical has no dialogue this character, named Fantine, has her death sung and it is one of my favorite works of art. Fantine is dying in a hospital from a combination of being out in the cold in nothing but a dress and possibly many diseases she has accumulated. Fantine was fired from her job at the factory and had no other means of acquiring money to save her child living with a horrible innkeeper and his wife in another town. She was forced into selling her hair and her body; saving little money for herself. In this song Fantine sings of her child, named Cosette, who she loves more than anything. This work of art is absolutely heartbreaking because even on her deathbed Fantine is completely selfless. She cares only about Cosette. She sings, “Come to me, Cosette, the light is fading.” Jean Valjean (the man who saved Fantine) enters and comforts her as she dies saying, “your child will want for nothing.” This assurance allows Fantine to finally die in peace with Valjean keeping true to his promise. This song makes me so unbelievably sad but also happy because Fantine is finally out of her horrible misery and Cosette goes on to live a very joyous life and Cosette being happy is literally all Fantine ever wanted.

My favorite works of art is music. I’ve listened to many types of songs trying to figure out which artist to do, and I found Taylor Swift to be the most inspiring. Most people think Taylor’s songs are all about boyfriends, break ups, or love, but I look up to her words as an inspiration, and what it’s like to be yourself-to be free. I’ve always loved to listen to Taylor Swift’s songs on the radio in the car, or as I’m in the shower, but I never understood the true meaning of her songs until I went to her concert in Philadelphia over the summer. Taylor reaches out to young girls in her songs, and teaches them to be “fearless” and to speak out for themselves and others. Taylor uses many metaphors throughout her songs, one being, “Loving him was red”. She uses colors to give us a better understanding of her feelings. My favorite quote of Taylor’s is “Fearless is getting back up and fighting for what you want over and over again, even though every time you’ve tried it before, you’ve lost”. She continues to inspire me to believe that I am my own human being and am free to live the way I want. Taylor’s lyrics allow girls to be comfortable with themselves and make people aware that they are all right and everything’s gonna be okay. Taylor Swift has given me the courage to be 100% terrified, but jumping anyway.

The best sentence I’ve ever read is from a book by Stephen Chbosky, which goes like this, “…I am both happy and sad and I’m still trying to figure out how that could be” (2). This is from my favorite work of art which is a book called, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky. This is my favorite work of art because of how the scenes are written and portrayed throughout the book. The way Charlie, the main character, thinks is written perfectly and I like to think I think like him too. The story starts off with Charlie starting high school, so I found some things to relate to. I react to this book emotionally and thoughtfully. In an emotional way because of how alone he feels in some ways in the beginning. In a thoughtful way, I try to imagine someone dealing with problems like Charlie’s. When I imagine people like him it makes me act nicer to everyone. When Charlie finds his group of friends he cares so much for each and everyone one of them. He makes me want to be like that, someone who is nice and treats everyone right. There are tons of different styles of art, but personally this is my favorite.

The definition of art is very controversial. To me, art is something that inspires you and it’s something that appeals to you emotionally. I have found that great works of art have more value once you look beneath the surface of them. One of my many favorite works of art is the movie, The Guardian, because I appreciate the true meaning of what it is about. I have seen it over and over countless times and it never gets old. The lessons that the movie has taught me are outstanding and powerful, and I reflect on them after I watch it every time. The Guardian is about a legendary Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer named Ben Randall. After his whole squad gets killed from a devastating helicopter crash, Senior Chief Ben Randall is sent to teach at an elite training program for Rescue Swimmers. He emphasized to his class, “There will come a time when you might have to decide who lives and dies out there.” While he is there, he pays most of his attention to a young man who stands out from his swimming skills, Jake Fischer. Despite Jake’s incredible abilities, Ben knew that he was lacking critical commitment and heart to serve. But he believed that by working with him he could get him there. With a lot of training and support, Jake graduates and learns the true meaning of sacrifice and heroism. The two swimmers go on a rescue mission together off the coast of Alaska, and Ben is proud of Fischer and their success when they completed it together. However, when Fischer gets called alone to a shipwreck in a category three storm, he gets in trouble. Ben, fearing something is wrong, takes another helicopter to the scene to save his friend. He ends up getting himself and Jake off the ship and into the crate connected to the helicopter by a cable. As they are hoisted up from the raging sea, the cable starts to fray and Ben knows that it can only hold one of them. As he unhooks himself, Fischer grabs him from the fingertips with all his might remembering the record Randall had set from doing the same thing. “I won’t let go.” Jake struggles to hold on and in a few minutes, Senior Chief slips off his glove and falls into the ocean ensuring Jake’s survival. This movie exemplifies true courage, dedication, and friendship and it is one of my all time favorite movies. It demonstrates the true meaning of sacrifice and what it means to be a legend. Even though it puts me in a sad mood, I think it is a great piece of art.

As someone who has had music define most of their life, i found that the musical arts is the finest of all of the arts out there. However, of all the masterpieces put there, I find that the song "Mind Heist" by Zack Hemsey is one of the greatest of all time. This song embodies strenght, finesse, raw talent, and a great amount of thought. Everytime I hear this song, I get hooked on it all over again and end up listening to it for hours on end. Though the song itself is only a few minutes in length, it plants a seed inside you that causes you to love it immediately. The song weaves itself through your mind like a snake, and attacthes itself to your brain and feeds you a sheer amount of ecstacy that only an orchestra can give. This beautiful peice is certainly a work of art, and I can say first hand that it truely heists the mind.

Art is a wide range of things. It could be a painting, a song, or even a movie. My favorite piece of artwork has to be the movie “Rain Man” directed by Barry Levinson. The first time I saw this movie was a couple years ago with my step dad. I liked the movie not only for the humor in it, but for the message it conveys. The movie is about a father that passes away and leaves one million dollars in the name of his autistic son Raymond, but he also had an estranged son named Charlie, who was upset that the money was left in Raymond’s hands. So Charlie kidnaps Ray from the Asylum so that he can take advantage of Raymond who doesn’t understand the concept of money. After they are on their journey, it starts to become more about spending time with Raymond and helping him, than about the money. One quote from the movie that I really like when Charlie is arguing with his girlfriend while Raymond sits in the other room, Susanna: you use me, you use Raymond, and you use everyone!
Charlie: Using Raymond? Hey, Raymond am I using you?
Raymond: Yeah
Charlie: Shut up! He’s answering a question from an hour ago!!
I like this scene because it’s humorous, plus it makes Charlie uses that in fact, he is using Raymond. This is my favorite piece of artwork because it shows that money is not everything and that sometimes you have to put aside your feelings and anger to help someone else out.

Ever since I was little, I loved the arts and participating in them. Reading is one of my favorite pastimes and I express myself through drawing and painting as well. I’ve been dancing ballet and performing almost all of my life. My favorite form of art is the ballet The Nutcracker. My dance studio has been taking this ballet to the stage for about thirty years now. Everything about this ballet, the music, the costumes, and the different choreography that is unique to every dance studio, has a special meaning to me and countless memories that they are attached to. For me, the Nutcracker isn’t just a Christmas story about a young girl and her journey through the “Land of the sweets.” Specific notes of the music on the ballet by Tchaikovsky take me back to countless hours of rehearsals. Many people know the story of The Nutcracker or at least can recognize the music that is often heard in the holidays. It is a story that I first fell in love with when I first saw the ballet performed when I was only four.

Movies are a large scale work of art, and one of my favorites took an estimated $160,000,000 to film and produce. The first time I saw it wasn’t in theatres, it was in my room. I was on my laptop, in the middle of the night, during a summer storm. Since then I have watched it four times, and every time something new catches my eye. That’s one of the main reasons why Inception is one of my favorite movies. No matter how many times I watch it I still notice something that I did not before. Also, I love the main idea of the movie which is the ability to control your dreams which is a phenomenon called “lucid dreaming.” This movie captured my attention in the summer of 2010 and every time I am watching it I’m brought back to that stormy night. One of my favorite parts is during a fight scene in a dream, while the character Arthur is using an assault rifle and exchanging fire with one of the bad guys. Just then, the character Eames walks up to him and says “You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling.” After which Eames pulls out a grenade launcher from nowhere. This part really captures one of the main themes of the movie, which is that you control anything and everything in your dreams.

For as long as I can remember I have been obsessed with one celebrity. She has been called a triple threat because she can sing, dance, and act. Which is why when she put out her documentary “Life is But a Dream” it instantly became my favorite work of art. In the movie Beyonce does not only show the ups and downs of her life but some how creates a learning expedition through her life experiences. In the documentary she shows how she juggles being a mother, wife, entertainer, and entrepreneur. The vulnerability shown in the film shows what you do not often see with many celebrities. Beyonce's work ethic and dedication is truly inspiring. She shows how being famous is great but when something tragic happens it is hard to get away from the public eye and just grieve. Staying humble, being true to yourself, while still finding who you are can be difficult while growing up in the music industry. Some how Beyonce managed to maintain a private life while still doing what she loves and was born to do. “Life is But a Dream” many not be your ordinary work of art but it sure does have a greater depth and significance than what you may think.

I’ve always loved Vincent Van Gogh’s work but as long as I can remember Starry Night was my favorite work of his and of anyone else’s. Van Gogh painted Starry Night in 1889 and it is the view he had outside of his sanatorium room window in Saint-Remy-de-Provence in southern France. The painting is the view at night and he painted it during the day from memory. In the painting you can see the town in the bottom right corner, on the left side seemingly close up is a strange looking bush, and you can see the mountains in the background. However Van Gogh did not want to have the focus of the painting be the town, he wanted it to be the beautiful night sky, as shown by how he painted it. This work is my favorite because I love the long, fluid, yet slightly messy brush strokes and the way he utilizes the dark and light colors of the star filled night sky, the dark mountains, and the dimly lit town. Also I like the way he enhanced the light of the moon and stars and made the look big and bright with the swirling sky and clouds behind them. Starry night is peaceful to me and is very calming for me to look at even with the extravagant brush strokes and the bright colors. The dark colors, the way it all blends together and the overall peacefulness of a night in southern France just completes this amazing piece of art.

Nobody believes a liar-even when she’s telling the truth. This is one of the eerie messages from my favorite work of art “Pretty Little Liars.” This series is both a TV show, yet an array of books, about four teenagers that are being stalked by an unknown person. The catch is that this “unknown person”, also known as “A”, knows all of the secrets that only their dead friend, Alison, knew. At first, I was skeptical of the series because people always raved about how scary, but exciting, the murder mystery was. After reading the first book, I thought I would check out the show, and see if it was as catchy as the novels. To my surprise, the show caught my attention and ever since the beginning, I have been a “Pretty Little Liar” fan, following all of the shows and reading all of the books. This work of art provokes an emotional fear response in me, but it’s so exciting that I can’t stop watching. Just like a scary roller coaster that is terrifying, but I get in line again anticipating the next thrill, “Pretty Little Liars” leaves me biting my nails, but leaves me eagerly awaiting the next show. In the past I have found that many mysteries are predictable, and this one is not. In my opinion, the books are better than the show because the show throws in many subplots that make it challenging to follow the main story line. I have conjectured many endings in my mind, but you can be assured that I will stay tuned until the last episode and book. Could Alison really be alive, or is it the crazy doctor from the insane asylum?

My favorite work of art has to be a classic movie, Saving Private Ryan. This movie is one of the most realistic portrayals of World War Two and is also one of the most renowned military movies ever. I like this movie because it truly portrays the gruesomeness of war and gives you a slight feeling of what the soldiers had to endure. One of my favorite scenes was the scene of the invasion of Omaha Beach by the Allies. In this scene, you can see all of the horrors that went on, including the bloody seawater pooled up in Cpt. Miller’s helmet, or the tons of men sacrificing their lives for America running into a storm of bullets. I also love how the mission of the squad of eight is to go behind enemy lines and rescue one man, Private Ryan. The men follow their orders and risk their lives to save Private Ryan’s. This is one example that shows the theme of sacrifice throughout the movie. It is also interesting because throughout the movie you realize that the characters are not these extensively trained professional soldiers, but instead, they are just everyday men serving their country and risking their lives for not just America, but for the men fighting side by side with them. It is truly one of the best movies ever created.

I am a big fan of books and movies and other works of art, and one of my favorites is definitely “The Office,” a television sit com staring Steve Carrell. The show is about a Pennsylvania paper company and describes not only the economic struggles of the company but also mocks soap operas and reality TV shows as it describes the lives of the characters that work there. It is a satiric comedy, mocking not only TV shows but also life in the work place of similar businesses and small businesses in the real world. Early in the show, most of the humor comes from the awkward, tasteless and inappropriate comments of the regional manager at the Scranton Branch, Michael Scott (Carell). By the end of the show, Michael and several other characters move on in life, getting married or advancing in their careers. It is a hilarious show and one of my favorite works of art.

Many people would consider their favorite work of art to be something ordinary and mundane, such as a painting, a play, or a song. However, my favorite work of art happens to be the movie The Breakfast Club. An ‘80’s “classic,” The Breakfast Club is about five high school students, all a different type of the basic teenage stereotypes, who meet in Saturday detention and end up becoming friends. Right from the beginning of the movie, it is obvious that the “brain, athlete, basket case, princess, and criminal” have nothing in common with one another, other than the unfortunate coincidence that they have to spend an entire Saturday in detention together. This is by far my favorite movie and work of art for many reasons. For one, it is very relatable for any and all high school students; no matter who you are, high school is a constant battle between wanting to fit in and wanting to remain true to yourself. That is exactly what each of these five characters deals with during their nine hours of Saturday detention. Another reason The Breakfast Club is my favorite work of art is that it highlights the true human tendency to judge someone before you know them; this is especially true for high school students in today’s world. Even though each of these five characters comes in judging one another for what they “must be” based on their stereotype, they end up getting to know each other and discovering a whole new perspective on someone they would have never talked to before then. A third reason I like The Breakfast Club is that it shows how everyone shares the same or very similar problems in high school, no matter who you are or what “stereotype” you fit into. Even though my favorite work of art is not something normal like a painting or poem, The Breakfast Club is a moving film that can relate to high school students everywhere, and it is for that reason that it is by far my favorite work of art.

To me, art is something you find beautiful. Art is also something that inspires you. To me music is art. Music can inspire someone to do great things. A fine example of art in music is the album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by the rapper Kanye West. A somewhat controversial rapper, Kanye West is known for being a leader in the music industry and someone who is not afraid to speak his mind. That is trait that I find most respectable about Kanye West. This album is all about the many thoughts that go through his mind. And the many dreams and fantasies he has. He talks about his achievement and his mistakes, showing that he knows he messes up and isn’t afraid to admit it. This album features many different types of songs, going from and upbeat and fast song to a slow and thoughtful song. I have come to love this album and artist because of the bond me and my close friends have formed over our mutual love for this particular record. I have also found that this album always seems to have the perfect song for the mood I am in. If I need a fast song to get excited to it has that, if I need a slow song to relax to it has that also. Another aspect of the album I enjoy, is the lyrics. Some of the lyrics speak to me and sometimes give me words of wisdom or words I just need to hear when I’m upset. No matter the circumstance, I always have this record to fall back on. And to me this is the most beautiful form of art I could ask for.

My favorite piece of art is “The Starry Night” by Vincent van Gogh. Most art does not really stick out too much to me, but this painting does. I have liked this painting since I was little because I have seen it on television, and I started to like it ever since then.
“The Starry Night” is a painting of a town during the night, but the sky is filled with several stars and the moon.
This painting is not bland, but instead it makes the painting more interesting and realistic through the small details. The town is very detailed, and instead of gray, similar buildings, there are different colors and different buildings, making it look more alive. I like how the stars stick out in the painting. The stars are giant yellow circles in the sky, but the edges blend into the night sky. There are several of them and they shine over the town below. I like how the sky is a mixture of different yellows and blues. It makes the sky look more interesting, instead of just having a solid dark blue sky. The stars’ glowing also makes the sky interesting, making the stars appear larger and more significant. This painting is extremely detailed, and that is why it is my favorite piece of art.

I had been a very curious person for as long as I can remember, always seeking new information constantly about my surroundings, myself, or my studies. I would go to my mother when I needed help or my father for advice. However, no one person quite captivated me as much as my grandfather could with his extensive wisdom of most things be it new or old. I'd ask him for the best play when playing sports or the answer to a complicated math problem, but as my eleventh or twelfth birthday rolled around, I started to appreciate art in all of its form. But no other piece has made me more intrigued then the Pantheon. First off it is one of the few major architectural phenomena still standing that is over 1500 years old. It was built in the year 126 to serve as a temple to the gods of ancient Rome. Since then it has been repurposed many times, for a Catholic church and even a burial place probably because it was too valuable to be destroyed in a war and rather was sought after as a token of victory. Perhaps the reason why it has held its value for so long is the fact that the inside is a perfect sphere. With modern technology, such a feat would be incredible and it is even more mind-boggling that it could have been completed nearly 1800 years ago. Just by its sheer size and perfection in shape it is a wonder not to mention all of the treasures it holds within.

I never got into art as a little kid. But in elementary school and middle school, taking art class really made me appreciate it more. One subject that I really enjoyed was surrealism, painting that had dreamy and unrealistic qualities to them. My favorite work of art: The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali, is part of this genre. This famous image shows various clocks "melting" into a scene. This painting was done in the mid 1900's and is Dali's most famous work. This is my favorite work of art for two main reasons. I have always liked the dreamy feel surrealist paintings and art portray; which is very prevalent in this work of art. And I like the message it sends: that time is meaningless. This simple and imaginative thought sparks so much thought about life and time. Time is usually thought of as an adamant thing that always bears down on everyone. This painting throws that idea out the window and makes you think about things on a broader scale. Mabey time is relative, or it is just a meaningless number we have chosen to stress over for our entire lives. I love how this painting challenges the indestructable nature of time. That is why Salvador Dali's The Persistence of Memory is my favorite work of art.

My favorite work of art is, in fact, a song by the band Alice In Chains. The song goes by the title “Nutshell.” Although Alice In Chains is primarily known for being a hardcore rock band, “Nutshell” is a song of deeper meaning. The guitars do not blare in your ears like other songs by the band, and the lyrics have purpose, unlike the lyrics to many other rock songs written by other artists. An example of some of the lyrics in the song is as such:
We chase misprinted lines
We face the path of time
And yet I fight
And yet I fight
This battle all alone
No one to cry to
No place to call home
These lyrics clearly illustrate someone who has been through many tough trials in their life. However, as the lyrics state, this person feels as though all this time they have gone through the harsh moments with somebody by their side, but now, at this moment, they feel abandoned. The lyrics can be seen as a direct correlation to the life of Layne Staley, the band’s lead singer. Staley had a tough life, seeing his parents go through a divorce when he was young and never hearing from his father again. Staley also battled drug addiction throughout his life, which ultimately resulted in his death. The lyrics to “Nutshell” show very deep meaning on their own, yet they are backed up by a powerful guitar melody and drum beat that ultimately makes the song Alice In Chains’ masterpiece.

Art. The expression of individuals in any way they can. Art can be literature, paintings, drawings, music, movies, and the list goes on and on. But for me, music has always appealed to me in the most significant way. Though, my favorite form of music is that written in cadence, or drumline music. The best of the best cadences come from DCI, Drum Corps International. The reason why these cadences are my favorite works of art is due to their sound. It is amazing when you can have fifteen or more people all sounding one and the same to deliver the audience an unbelievable show. They can take the most complicated pieces of music and play them flawlessly and with such precision that it emits a sound that makes me feel like I am in a trance. Being a drummer, I have heard drumlines from the very worst to the very best. DCI is the top and hearing them inspires me to become better to one day go on to play with them. Their sense of uniformity and meticulousness allow them to create beats like never heard before. I thrive to be able to sound like they do, and it makes me a better drummer doing so. DCI cadences are my favorite pieces of art because of effect that they have on me to improve upon my talents.

Ever since I was a little girl, I just loved to listen to music. Recently, I have liked country music more and more. My favorite song at this moment is “Play it Again” by Luke Bryan. The first time I ever heard this song was the first day Luke Bryan’s new album came out. As soon as I heard this song, I instantly fell in love with it. I can always go and listen to this song no matter what. I listen to “Play it Again” before all my volleyball games and on my way to school to get me pumped up. My favorite part of the song is the chorus that goes:
“She was like, oh my God, this is my song

I’ve been listenin’ to the radio all night long

Sittin’ ‘round waitin’ for it to come on and here it is

She was like, come here boy, I wanna dance

‘Fore I said a word, she was takin’ my hand

Spinnin’ me around ‘til it faded out
And she gave me a kiss
And she said, play it again, play it again, play it again

And I said, play it again, play it again, play it again ”.
Whenever I hear “Play it Again” come on the radio in the car, I literally start freaking out and turn up the volume really high. I think I really connect to this song because I feel exactly like the girl in the song when this song comes on.

Out of all the songs that I have listened to Mac Miller's song "Remeber" is my favorite. A lot of his songs are about partying and having a good time, but not this one. This song is more deep and makes you think. Some of the lyrics to this song are:
"I remember when we were just kids. We knew nothing at all, we'd talk about the life we lived in West Virginia. Lost somewhere out in West Virginia. It's a dark science, when your friends start dying. Like how could he go? He was part lion. Life goes on, tears all dried in couple years ago are by, by then. Can you please help me find my friend? I'll give you anything you need multiplied by ten. I heard he moved to a place where the time end, so you don't need money all you got is the time to spend. Life is short, don't ever question the length. It's cool to cry, don't ever question your strength. I recommend no limits, intricate thought, go' head just give it a shot."
In the beginning of the song it talks about being kids, and having no worries. When you were a kid you really didn't know how hard life can really be. You are very innocent to the world. As you grow older you will have hard times, but you have to remember to be strong. You are stronger than you think. One of the hard times in life is losing someone you love and care about. Losing someone you love is the worst feeling you can have. You would give anything and everything to get them back. Even after hard times like this you must stay strong. You only have one life and you need to live it to the fullest.

My favorite work of art would be the television series Grey’s Anatomy by Sandra Oh. This television show focuses on a group of five surgical interns and their lives during their time at Seattle Grace Hospital. This show is very realistic and portrays the journey that the interns, and eventual residents and attendings go through. They have some tough times like deaths and illnesses of friends, but it makes the show very entertaining to watch. The first time I saw this show I was with a friend and she forced me to watch it. I did not think I was going to like it, but I became obsessed with it for the rest of the summer. This work of art taught me that it takes a lot of time and work to become a surgeon or do anything of that nature. It made me not want to do anything in the medical profession because of the amount of time it takes out of your social life. I feel that I have learned a lot of medical terms from this show too. It makes me feel smarter. I highly recommend this show if you are looking for a good drama to watch.

Admittedly I am not very interested in most paintings and works of art. I however deeply enjoy songs that have meaningful messages within them. So for this post I have chosen to write about the song “If I Ruled the World” by the recording artist Nas. I enjoy this song and Nas’ view of a faultless world. In the song Nas raps about how if he ruled the world there would be world peace, and an end to the many hardships that plague mankind today. Nas raps about every one having wealth, and no one being abused by unfair laws or unfair people. He talks about an end to racism, and says, “The way to be, paradise like relaxin black, Latino, and Anglo-Saxon”. In the song the oppressed are freed, and they thrive and prosper. He says there wouldn’t be such a thing as jealousies or felonies. In Nas’ dream world there are no prisoners, crimes, or wars. Instead of those evil things the world is filled with peace, prosperity, love, and freedom from oppression and racism. In Nas’ perfect world no one would suffer or be afraid. Everyone would be civilized, and everyone would live together peacefully and harmoniously. The sky would be the limit to what people can accomplish in this flawless world.

My favorite work of art would have to be the movie Dumb and Dumber. I was ten years old the first time I saw it. The first time I saw it was when I was at my aunt’s house. Dumb and Dumber is about two best friends, Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, that travel across the U.S. to return a briefcase filled with ransom money to a woman they hardly know. They are tracked down by the criminals involved in the ransom and unknowingly kill one of them. They end up spending all the ransom money and when they meet up with the woman, Mary Swanson, they both fall head over heels in love with her. They have no idea that the ransom money is for her husband. The criminals end up holding Lloyd, Harry, and Mary hostage. While being held hostage the criminals open the briefcase to find it filled with IOU’s. The criminals are about to execute Harry when the F.B.I. intervenes. My favorite quote in the movie is when Lloyd is reluctant to pick up a hitchhiker that ends up being a criminal. Lloyd says,” We don’t usually pick up hitchhikers… but I’m-a gonna go with my instincts on this one. Saddle up partner!”

Every since I was younger I’ve been a big movie buff. As I’ve grown older I have begun to search for movies that touch on the real meaning of life. Recently my parents introduced me to one of their favorite movies “The Dead Poets Society.” The movie tells the story of a group of boys who go to a boarding school. In the boys’ English class they learn many things from their teacher Mr. Keating. The boys resurrect Mr. Keating’s old school club “The Dead Poets Society,” hence the name of the movie, the main objective of the club is to learn about the history of poetry. Throughout the formation of the club the boys don’t just learn about poetry, but they also learn a lot about themselves and each other. At the end of the movie one of the boys commits suicide because he was pressured into being someone he wasn’t and he could no longer handle it. Mr. Keating was asked to leave the school after that because the other teachers, administration, and other believed the way he taught made the boys think for themselves instead of conforming like the rest of the school. And at the very end when Mr. Keating is asked to leave the school the boys of the Dead Poets Society stand up for him one last time because they know what he did and taught was correct. Something Mr. Keating said to the boys was, “Boys, you must strive to find your own voice. Because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all,” and all the boys in the Dead Poets Society found their voice.

At first it took me a while to decide what to write about. I don’t really have a favorite anything; I think I’m too indecisive. Instead I have a top four favorite ice creams, and my favorite color is purple (followed by green and blue). If I had to choose my favorite work of art (which I guess I kind of do have to) I would say it’s Game of Thrones. I love everything about Game of Thrones from the books to the TV show. Game of Thrones takes place in the fictional land of Westeros. There are seven kingdoms, and the story focuses on five main families, with many other families and characters. In some way or other they are all battling for the Iron Throne. Game of Thrones was originally written by George R.R. Martin. HBO then adapted it into a TV series with each book being one season. I first started watching it the summer before high school and instantly fell in love with it. I laugh at all the witty banter and truly feel for all the characters. I cry when some of my favorites are killed. Without a doubt it is one of my favorite shows.

“I don't scratch my head unless it itches and I don't dance unless I hear some music. I will not be intimidated. That's just the way it is.” This is a quote that I like to live by everyday in my life. These words were spoken by Coach Boone in my favorite movie of all time, “Remember the Titans.” There were no other options when I thought about my favorite work of art. “Remember the Titans” is a film that portrays the football from T.C. Williams High School in Virginia sometime in the early 1970s. T.C. Williams was formed when one black school and one white school integrated. Many of the players, and even some coaches, disagreed with the desegregation. This is especially true when the white head coach of the team is replaced by a black man, Coach Boone. The mission of Coach Boone is to make the kids forget about the chaotic world around them and focus on football. He does this by taking the players to a two-week training camp in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. During the camp, he takes the players on a run to the battlefield in Gettysburg and tells of how many men died for the same reason they’re fighting each other today. The boys all became brothers by the time they returned from camp and Coach Boone lead them to the state championship. “Remember the Titans” was so inspiring to me and showed me how everyone is equal and should be treated that way. I also play football so this movie helps me see the determination and fight every player on T.C. Williams had to win no matter what. Just like the former head coach’s daughter Sheryl Yoast said, “People say that it can’t work, black and white; well here we make it work, everyday. We have our disagreements, of course, but before we reach for hate, always, always, we remember the Titans.”

There are so many amazing works of art that I personally love, so it was very difficult for me to choose just one. Between all of the great songs and movies that I enjoy there was one that really stuck out to me, I Love You This Big by Scotty McCreery. I chose this song because the first time that I heard it I immediately fell in love with it. The lyrics and the message that it had really spoke to me. The first time that I heard this song was in May of 2011 during the finals of American Idol. Scotty McCreery was competing to win that night, and I Love You This Big was the last song that he sang that night. It would also be his first single if he were to win. He won, and the song was released the next day. From the moment that I bought that song I could not stop listening to it. As I kept listening to it, some certain parts really stuck with me and made me love this song even more! The song is about how even though you are young you can still know what you want and how to get it. Now, even to this very day I Love You This Big is still my favorite song. There are so many amazing works of art that I personally love, so it was very difficult for me to choose just one. When I was about five or six, I remember sitting down in front of my mom on the couch while she brushed my hair and watched her favorite television show, F. R. I. E. N. D. S. A couple years ago F. R. I. E. N. D. S. started a string of reruns on nickelodeon at night. I remembered my mom watching it so I decided to watch one episode and after that I was hooked. Once I finished the last episode I realized it was by far my favorite series and my favorite work of art. . The series is about six people who become friends in their mid twenties and grow together up until their early thirties. Throughout the episodes you watch all the characters run into problems with relationships, jobs, and their parents as they try to grow up. Obviously this is a show about friends and friendship, so during the show you watch all of the characters become friends and watch their friendships grow. Friendship, to me, is one of the most important things in a person’s life. Like the theme song says “when it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month or even your year but I’ll be there for you,” F. R. I. E. N. D. S displays the unconditional love that best friends have for each other and how even when the sky comes falling down your best friends are always beside you. At times the episodes touch on very serious topics yet it still has the right amount of comedic relief. I feel like it is that comedic relief that makes the show so great and more realistic. If I had to describe friendship there is really so much that I could say but everything that I would say is summed up in F. R. I. E. N. D. S

Art has always been a huge part of my life, be it an image, painting, sculpture, drawing, music, movie, or play. Music, in particular, has a huge impact on me. The melodies and chords speak to me in a way nothing else really can, in a sort of “beautiful language” if you will. Because of this love of music I took up piano, and have been continuously playing for 11 years. As a piano player, I have a fondness for piano works, such as Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata Movement One. When I hear the song’s first few seconds, I get this feeling I can’t really describe. It’s a deeply moving sensation, as if my heart is being pumped by the music and my chest rings with the reverberation of the key strokes. This feeling is the same feeling I get whenever I really enjoy a song. The chord progression in this piece is why I like it so much. The chords tell a colorful story to me, from melancholy isolation, to peaceful bliss, to fiery anger, to beautiful sorrow, all swirling and blending into a menagerie of sound. Its transition from smooth chords to jagged half-steps makes me think of the struggle to find peace, perhaps a struggle that Beethoven himself went through at some point. I can feel the intensity of Beethoven’s love for music when I hear Moonlight Sonata, and it’s fun to imagine what he was inspired by. When it plays, I can’t help but close my eyes and sway, following the notes carefully and trying to pick up each one. Every song has a different story to tell, and this story in particular brings me much joy to experience.

When I think of my favorite work of art I think of “Give Me Love” by Ed Sheeran. I find this song so intriguing because there aren’t many lyrics to this song, yet a whole story is played out through these few lines. The lyrics do change a little but mostly they are repetitive. It blows my mind how so few words have such a deep meaning and can tell a story that will break your heart. The story that has been created from these lyrics is about a boy who is hopelessly in love with girl. Much to his dismay the relationship must have fallen apart and it is tearing him apart. The boy wants nothing more than to have this relationship again and he wants the love they once shared back, he indicates this by opening the song with lyrics, “Give me love like her”. The story that is played out through the lyrics is not the only obsession I have with this song. Ed’s voice is what really pulls me towards this song. As the song begins his voice is soft yet gruff as he explains his situation. His voice is almost empty as though he has put all his energy into wanting this girl back. As the song goes on his dull voice turns to begging and full of emotion as he explains that all he wants is this girl back into his life and he’s not ready to give up on this love. However as the instruments and his voice crescendo to the climax of the song his voice suddenly becomes vulnerable. Ed’s voice is dripping with desperation and you hear his heart breaking as he cries out “love me” and “give me love” over and over again as though he has nothing else in his life worth living for except being loved. As the song ends I’m always reminded of why it is my favorite song. Not only does “Give Me Love” have such deep and heartfelt lyrics, but Ed’s voice tugs on my heart strings. In those five minutes I can relate to ever detail in the song just through the emotions in his voice and that is why “Give Me Love” is my favorite work of art.

When most people think of art, they imagine paintings and sculptures. One of my favorite works of art is the movie "Gladiator". It stars Russel Crowe as a former army general, Maximus, who is betrayed by his king's son who kills his own father, so he can inherit the throne instead of Maximus, the king's first choice. This movie inspires me not to give up like Maximus does when he is forced to fight for his life in the arena. The two major themes in the movie are betrayal and perseverance. The movie teaches its viewers that you must be able to persevere that hardships in life to survive and prosper. Maximus faces death every day, but he doesn't give up or feel sorry for himself. We may find ourselves feeling that we go through hard things, but in reality, our day-to-day lives probably are a lot less stressful than others. The movie teaches to appreciate what we have because it all could be taken from us at the blink of an eye. This work of art inspires me very much. I believe its moral is one that should be shared. I'm sure that many people have seen this movie, but i don't believe that many of its viewers appreciate the message it gives quite like I do.

My favorite work of art is the classic rock song “Stairway to Heaven” by the band Led Zeppelin. There are many things about this song that make it my favorite. Firstly, the use of all the different instruments in the song is creative. I really like all of the music, especially the guitar part. My favorite part of the song is the guitar solo near the end. The lyrics are also very good. My favorite thing about the lyrics of this song in particular is that people can interpret them to mean different things. I also like this song because the band that wrote it and this song in particular are classics of their genre. This is one of the most famous rock songs ever and helped to define the genre. This band and song also inspired future artists to make good music. The song’s lyrics are very interesting and use lots of literary devices such as metaphors. Another one of my favorite things about the song is that the tempo, volume, and timing of the song vary during the course of the song. It is very complex and well-written piece of music. I like that fact even more because in modern music it’s very common for most songs to be very simple and lazily written, but this song wasn’t.

When told to write about my favorite work of art I got really nervous, but when Mr. Fiorelli said that art includes everything from music to movies I was relieved. I have many movies that I can consider some of my favorites. However, the movie I have chosen as my favorite work of art is Remember the Titans. Ever since the first time I saw this amazing movie I’ve loved every minute of it, and it gets better every time I watch it. I can nearly quote this movie line for line because I have seen it so many times; “let them remember…forever! The night they played the Titans”. This is probably my favorite quote from the movie. Whether you are watching Remember the Titans for the first time or you are like me and have seen it hundreds of times, it keeps you on the edge of your seat. This movie takes place during the post civil rights movement. The setting of this movie is T.C. Williams High School in 1972 in Alexandria, Virginia. What makes it special is that T.C. Williams is one of the first schools to be integrated with African American and Caucasian students. At the center of this movie is a recently integrated football team that quite frankly hates each other because of the racial issues in our country at the time. But as the movie develops, the members of the team, no matter the skin color, slowly form a tight relationship and soon become like family. This movie shows us and anyone that plays a sport can relate to this, that a team sport like football has a drastic affect on our lives and can bring very different people together at even the hardest of times. Many athletes know that your teammates are often like brothers/sisters. This movie puts into perspective that football or any team sport is so much like life and is connected in many ways. This is my favorite movie because everything about it is amazing, thrilling and I can relate to it.

Music has always been my go-to ever since I was young. It put me in a better mood, motivated me, spoke to me, and sometimes put me down a little bit. However, my favorite song is one that motivates me. This work of art is not considered to be one of the fine arts, because it is a song by Eminem called “Not Afraid.” This is a song he wrote to convey his message of being clean from drugs and how nothing can stop him from moving forward because he is not afraid, hence the song title, of anything coming his way. To me, however, this song motivates me to be the strongest person I can be, not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally as well. It makes me think back to all of the hard times I had in the past, and to move forward with the mindset of success. He basically tells his listeners not to let anyone get in the way their goals and to not care what anyone has to say about how you live your life. He very well portrays the attitude of motivation to become clean for himself and how he will not let anyone’s thoughts make him go back down the road he just came from. The message from this song I received is to always move forward and to not let anything get in my way.

There are many different forms of art that fascinate me but the one that has stood out to me the most is the work of Chris DeRubeis. I was first introduced to this artist from attending an auction while aboard my cruise in June. Because of his unique style of art, he has become a world famous icon. He came up with the idea of “Abstract Sensualism”. To make and construct his pieces of art, he uses metal. By scraping and chipping away the top layers, airbrushing, and burning it with chemicals and fire, DeRubeis found a way to make light reflect off the surface and turned it into paintings. I admire the work of DeRubeis because it is one of a kind. He never wanted to follow what everyone was doing and decided to create his own form of art. His paintings are fascinating and completely unique. The way he can make art amazes me. DeRubeis has given me a whole new appreciation towards art. I had never been intrigued by art until now. His paintings stand out to me from anything else that I have seen before including Van Gogh and Picasso. The abstract art he has created really makes me appreciate the beauty of art and everything that we have in this world.

One year ago, I started to fall in love with a band named, Pierce The Veil. One of my favorite songs written by them is “I don’t care if your contagious”. Many of their songs mean a lot to me, but this one means the most. The lead singer, Vic, had a conversation with a fan at one of their concerts. She explained that her boyfriend had just died in a car accident. She also told Vic about how they first held hands at a Pierce The Veil concert, and she wanted to thank them for making such an impact on her and her boyfriend’s life. This band means a lot to her, and me too. This song proves that Pierce The Veil doesn’t base their songs off of only love, drugs, and partying, life some of the other artists. They write their songs with feeling and emotion. Pierce The Veil listens to their fans and care about them. In the song, Vic sings, “They’ll never take us apart, can we chase away the dark now, so live in love and die. Last night she recited every reason she’s fine, so if were heading there and you catch her at the same time. You sing while I drive”. This is my favorite line. He used the girl’s words and put them in the song. Vic makes it clear to us, she doesn’t care if her boyfriend died, she’s still in love with him. She misses him and wants him back with her. Even though you try to tell people your okay, we all know your not.

I think for art to have true meaning it must convey a message. The artist should be displaying a work that has meaning and depth to him or her. When they have done this it becomes relatable to people. People begin to care about it and cherish it. The Dark Knight Rises, the dramatic fall and eventual uprising of Christopher Nolan's Batman sends the message that through a strong will and determination your goals are achievable. The pit that character Bruce Wayne is thrown in to and left for not only death but to watch his city burn in front of him is symbolism for a struggle we all face on our own levels. It symbolizes the struggle of building ourselves up to achieve our task and not allowing defeat to deter us. The film displays that you must have confidence and faith in yourself to achieve your goals. The storyline and script are wonderfully written as well as the fact that every actor is on top of their game, and that is why this is my favorite piece of artwork.

My favorite work of art is the song "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. I like this song because of the contrasting melodies and the very visualizing lyrics. The lyrics are about a man who thinks he has no place in this world and is trapped living in it.
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow,
Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters.
The song starts out in a monotone singing with the lyrics debating whether the world is real or not. Then a piano riff starts and the lyrics here is a monologue of the man talking to his mother and explaining his life to the listener. This is my favorite part of the song because of the rhythm and the tone. The song starts as a slow ballad and towards the end turns into a rock song. I interpret this part as an argument between his depression and his happiness within the man's head. I like how the subject of the song remains nameless. I think this give the listener more room to interpret the song in any way they want to.

“You say you're looking for someone who'll pick you up each time you fall. To gather flowers constantly and to come each time you call. A lover for your life and nothing more.” My favorite work of art is the song “It ain’t me, babe” by Bob Dylan. I heard this song about a year ago when I bought a Bob Dylan’s greatest hits album. I probably listen to this song every day. I don’t really have a reason for doing it, I just really like the song. When I first heard this song I assumed it was about love, which I thought made sense. I later looked up the meaning of the song and found out the song was about Bob Dylan speaking to the people telling them that he didn’t want them to think he was the leader of a movement he really wanted no part of. This surprised me and frankly made me enjoy the song even more. This song will always be a favorite of mine and Bob Dylan will always be one of my favorite artists. I know this isn’t your average rap or hip hop song, but if you haven’t already, listen to this song.

“I'm a winner. I'm going to win.” This quote is from my favorite work of art “Remember the Titans.” In the early 1970s, two schools in Virginia join together to form T.C. Williams High School. The previous football coach of the school is replaced by an African American coach. Tensions occur when players of different races are forced to be on the same team. Many of these tensions are lessened during a two week training camp, but when the players return from the camp, they find the town in chaos because of the forced desegregation of the high school. As the season progresses the team's achievements cause the community to accept the changes. The football team ends up finishing with a perfect season and creates a bond similar to a family. This movie is my favorite work of art because it is a true story of overcoming adversity in sports, school, and in a community. “Remember the Titans” also teaches that hard work will pay off in sports and in life. By the end of the movie, I learned various facts about American history, how to accept everyone despite any differences they might have, football strategies, and several fantastic sayings.

Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein, is a science and Gothic fiction book about the controversial actions by a scientist for his personal gains. The exposition of the novel includes a scientist by the name of Victor Frankenstein and his family whom he lives with in Geneva. Frankenstein explores the possibilities of creating artificial life through a series of scientific experiments. After successfully creating a creature, Frankenstein fearfully abandons it because of the its grotesque and terrifying features. The creature is left to survive on its own by observing and learning from the actions of humans. When the creature tries to approach humans, he is maliciously rejected because of his appearance. Many members of Frankenstein’s family are murder by the creature; whom is consumed by revenge for Victor because of its appearance and abandonment. Further conflict arises between the creature and Frankenstein, but the novel’s ultimate resolution is death for all the characters involved in the main plot. This novel by Mary Shelley is one of my favorite works of art because of its controversial topics and its application to the real world. The book presents themes, conflicts, and morals; such as, nature versus nurture, playing the role of God, and the dangers of seeking limitless knowledge. These literary devices can also be related to controversial, modern world application. Topics including STEM cell research, cloning, and abortions can be alluded to in Frankenstein. I am very intrigued in the sciences and I am very faithful in God, which are two subjects that have always had friction between their coexistence. This novel allows me to see the possible consequences of certain knowledge and experiments that may end up harming instead of helping mankind if they are not supervised with proper precautions. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein intrigues me through its debatable themes and real world application.

Since I was a young child, I have been fascinated by the impressionistic style of art. Claude Monet's Water Lilies had an awe-inspiring effect on me as a young boy. This painting depicts water lilies floating on the surface of a pond. I was mesmerized by the blend of colors and thick brush strokes used by Monet. For whatever reason, I preferred this less detailed and almost more blurry viewpoint then the more realistic and high-definition depictions of nature. Though lacking in small details, the vibrant and vividly contrasting colors are very pleasing to look at. Not being the best artist myself, the impressionistic style of art appealed to me more in how it was less focused on the small, minute details as it was to the broader picture. This painting of nature has a calming and tranquil feel to it, and is relaxing to take in. Viewing this painting brings back memories of going to ponds during the spring and summertime when there was lilies in the pond along with other wildlife. I have fond memories of playing near the water and watching the wildlife such as small fish or frogs swim around in the water, occasionally resting on the shore or even top of the lilies.

My favorite work of art is architecture in general, but if I had to pick one thing specific I would have to say skyscrapers. I have always been fascinated and awed by them. I remember the first time I saw one, I was shocked and amazed by how tall and ginormous they were. I couldn’t imagine man ever being able to create and build one. What really strikes me about them is the use of intricate design that is unique to very each one and how they stand tall over the city. I feel skyscrapers are what make a city unique and give it shape and personality. For example the first time I saw New York the view was breathe-taking and for the first time in my life did I feel like everything was so big and I was so small. Skyscrapers remind me off man made mountains, except when you get to the top of one, instead of a view of the landscape and nature you get to see a view of the city. Skyscrapers also inspire me to take an interest in architecture and give me a sense of free spirit. Their complex and intricate designs continue to amaze me and I hope I will maybe get to see as many as possible within my life time.

When most people think of art, they think of paintings or drawings. They are wrong. Art is all around you and is seen everywhere during every day. Movies and documentaries are my favorite form of art. The documentary Miracle is by far my most preferred art of any form. Miracle portrays an inspiring story about the U.S.A. National hockey team not only surpassing the undefeated Soviets but also winning the 1980 Olympic gold medal. The team overcomes many doubts from players, coaches, and many around the world. The movie is not just about a talented team winning the gold medal but an uplifting story on how they were able to beat the intimidating Russians. This is my favorite art mostly because it shows that no matter the circumstance, no matter what anyone thinks you can do it. It does not matter what background you come from, if you work as a team you can conquer anything. Herb Brooks, the head coach of the 1980 Olympic hockey team, once said, “Great moments are born from great opportunity.” This quote means a lot to me. It means that when you are given an opportunity you have a chance to make it whatever you want. You have a chance to take it and make it glorious.

"I hope you proud of me; the dude I grew to be. Ingenuity influenced by your eulogy," states an almost vulnerable sounding, twenty-one year-old Malcolm McCormick in the beginning of the song "REMember." Malcolm McCormick, better known by his stage name Mac Miller, wrote this song about a lost friend, Reuben Mitrani; hence the capital REM in the title. Losing a loved one is something everyone experiences at some point in their life. The genres of rap and hip-hop can often lack a sense of emotion and effort, however; you can really feel the pain and grief in Malcolm's voice. Lyrics such as "Can you please help me find my friend? I'll give you anything you need multiplied by ten. I heard he moved to a place where the time don't end, so you don't need money; all you got is time to spend." and "This life moves fast. I never I knew that... yours wouldn't have lasted; the dirt hitting your casket like raindrops. I swear I'll let you know when the pain stops." show Malcolm's heartfelt emotion. The emotion in this song is what makes this one of my favorite works of art. It shows that no matter what genre of music you create and no matter what image that genre can give you, it is up to you to make music that can mean something. While Mac isn't exactly conservative about his use of profanity, he manages to create a piece of art that everyone can somewhat relate to. Another part of this song that makes me really like it is when Malcolm's second verse starts. He says, "It's a dark science when your friends start dying. Like, how could he go? He was part lion!" Here Malcolm shows that we as humans sometimes think we're invincible, and that nothing bad would happen to us because that doesn't seem possible. It doesn't seem like a possibility. No matter how many things you see on the news, we never expect it to be our loved ones: our best friend, our mother, father, sister, or brother. But as Malcolm finds and tells in this song, tragedy can happen to anyone. It could even be you. This song really makes me think just how unpredictable life can really be. Art is such a universal language no matter what it may be. I love many types of art and genres of music, and this song by Mac Miller is one of my favorites.

One of my favorite works of art is the 1991 movie thriller, “The Silence of the Lambs” directed by Jonathan Demme. A young Federal Bureau of Investigation cadet by the name of Clarice Starling is asked to help the F.B.I. locate a psychopathic serial killer who is still on the prowl. She is asked to do this by interviewing an infamous killer who is now incarcerated and his name is Hannibal Lecter. Lecter was previously a much respected psychiatrist who was clever and extremely manipulative. Clarice must confide in Lecter her personal life and tragedies to gain his confidence and trust. She does this with hopes that Lecter will help in identifying, locating and capturing the current serial killer. Although this movie can, at times be considered a gruesome horror film, the plot of the story and underlying symbolism is what I found to be very intriguing. The idea that the F.B.I. used a raw and inexperienced cadet to question Lecter was very interesting. I liked the way that the story was played out. Each piece of the story was provided in a very well designed manner and had to be assembled with care to solve the mystery. This movie is one of my favorite works of art because it is so elaborately put together so that it is presented to the viewer on many different platforms. To some it may be considered a horror movie, to others a thriller or drama, in reality it is all of these.

Music has always been influential to me in a lot of ways, and finding a song that has a truly good meaning to it is a pleasant surprise for me. I found this in the song “Ghosts That We Knew” by Mumford & Sons. This song may seem depressing by the tone of the singing and the music at the start, but it is really a deep message of hope for all those in pain or who are struggling. It reminds you that no matter what, there is always someone out there that cares about you and wants to see you happy. When you’re depressed, you feel like there’s nothing and no one left for you, but that’s never true. In such a social world, relationships are so crucial to success in life, and friends and family care for you more than you realize. That is the core message that “Ghosts That We Knew” teaches. We are instructed to be the best we can be, for ourselves, and for others. And that we should never give up, because all is never lost. When you’re feeling down, just remember these lyrics, and hopefully they help you as much as they do me:
“So give me hope in the darkness
That I will see the light
Cause oh, that gave me such a fright
But I will hold on with all of my mind,
Just promise me that we'll be alright
And the ghosts that we knew will flicker from view
And we'll live a long life”

My favorite work of art is music. I listen to all types of music but my favorite is alternative. My friend showed me this song about two years ago and that was the first time I heard the song. At first I was hesitant. I didn't know if I liked the song or not but after I listened to it a couple more times I was hooked. I love this song because it has a story behind its lyrics. "She said the devil will want you back
And you'll never find love in an open hand
Shut your eyes, so you see I'm there
And know you'll always have this if you see this man." This is the chorus of the song. It means that the devil wants this man back and he will never have anyone offer him love, and when he shuts his eyes he will see her face and it will help him when he sees the devil.
