SOPHS #1 Journal Second Quarter: Laugh, Think, and Cry (due Monday, December 14)

Jim Valvano coached the North Carolina State Wolfpack to an upset victory in the 1983 NCAA men's basketball championship game. Valvano parlayed this victory along with his gift of public speaking to become one of the most likable and recognizable coaches in the land. A year later, I had the pleasure of listening to Valvano speak to a group of Delaware high school basketball coaches at an All Star banquet in Dover. Leaving the banquet hall that night, I thought to myself, "This guy is a natural born world shaker." Or something like that. He was THAT impressive a speaker.

Though his future teams were always competitive, North Carolina State would never come close again to matching the success of the fantasy 1983 season.

In 1992 Valvano developed cancer, his toughest and most insidious foe yet. A year later, ten years after his national championship, his body ravaged with cancerous tumors, Valvano fought for his life, not only to win his own battle, but also to get donations for cancer research. At the 1993 ESPY's Awards, ESPN awarded Valvano the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.
Hearing Valvano's speech at the ESPYs will make you laugh, think, and cry--three things--according to Valvano, that you should do every day.

In that speech Valvano announced the beginning of the Jimmy V Foundation, his charity to fund cancer research. Though Valvano passed away soon after his moving speech, the foundation is still active and important today, annually raising millions of dollars. An early season NCAA men's basketball tournament, almost always featuring announcer Dick Vitale, benefits the cause.

As a speaker, Valvano is a great storyteller. One small part of his method was the use of the "rule of threes." This rhetorical "trick" lists three (or sometimes more) items in parallel structure. An example is the famous line of Caesar (not Valvano), "I came, I saw, I conquered." Take note for Valvano's use of "threes" in his speech.

Valvano also makes effective allusions to sports greats Arthur Ashe and Vince Lombardi. Find out who these men were if you don't already know.

Your assignment: listen to the speech and read the words to the speech. Write your journal by responding to the following prompt (MINIMUM OF 200 WORDS):

Analyze the speech according to pathos, ethos, and logos. You should be able to write a few sentences, if not a short paragraph, about each of the three. What strategy is most effective? Support your answer citing key lines from the speech. If this isn't "enough" for 200 words, maybe explain your reaction to different lines of the speech. Warning: the speech is very emotional.

Jim Valvano's speech uses many rhetorical schemes to make it more emotional and moving. These schemes included pathos, ethos, and logos. Pathos involves using the reader's emotions to make them listen to and understand what the speaker is saying. He used pathos by telling his moving story about his battle with cancer and says how he does not know how much time he has left to live. Jim Valvano uses logos throughout his speech as well. Logos is appealing to reason. He uses this because he says that if more people have cancer than, have AIDS, than why are we giving more money to AIDS research? He says this so people will think that it is just common sense to give money to cancer research. Lastly, Jim Valvano uses ethos to appeal to the reader. He uses this in parts of his speech when it is as if he is speaking directly to all the people who have, or have been affected by, cancer. I think that pathos is most affective when giving a speech. I think this because everyone is emotional about something. He can relate to the most people using the rhetorical scheme of pathos even though all of the schemes are useful.

Pathos appeals specifically to your or to someone's emotion. Jim Valvano expresses pathos when he releases his story about his fight with cancer. In his speech, "Don't give up...Don't ever give up", he is saying that there is always hope, whatever the cause may be. He used cancer as an example and also in his speech, he used something that was very powerful- the Power of Threes. The Power of Threes is very effective because three is the perfect number in any case- if you use two, it can be not enough and four can be too much. Ethos is a little bit different- it appeals to the credibility of the character. For this speech, ethos would apply to all that have cancer and/or harming diseases and disabilities. Ethos played a great part in this because there were people who could relate to the topic-at-hand and actually understand Valvano's point. Not only that, but Valvano was a very likable character- he had a great sense of humor and could make anyone laugh but he was also very serious and moving when he needed to be. Valvano also showed logos- having a logical appeal- our third term. Valvano showed a logical appeal when he revealed a statistic; ''...I’ll…tell you that one in every four people will be afflicted with this disease, and yet, somehow, we seem to have put it in a little bit of a background.” By saying that sentence, it showed that he had a real connection to the cause. To me, Valvano expressed pathos the most. He showed that he could absolutely relate and feel for those in need of hope, and his speech showed that emotional connection. By saying "Don't give up...Don't ever give up", he made the audience truly believe that that is what he accomplished.

At the 1993 ESPY award Jim Valvano won the inaugural Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award. At the time, he was battling cancer but still gave a moving speech. In the speech he displayed excellent examples of ethos, pathos, and logos.
Ethos is often used to create a connection with the audience and build up your own character. Valvano opens with a humble thanks and joke saying: "That’s the lowest I’ve ever seen Dick Vitale since the owner of the Detroit Pistons called him in and told him he should go into broadcasting." He also shares a funny anecdote of his first pep talk as a coach. He used to words of another coach and ended up saying the wrong team's name.
The majority of the speech uses pathos. He mentions his own battle with cancer, "Time is very precious to me. I don’t know how much I have left, and I have some things that I would like to say." He doesn't know how long he has to live but he wants to change some things in that time. He also brings up the fact that he isn't letting that stop him from living his life: "nothing is changed for me." In this time, he mentions the charity he's started to raise money for cancer research even though he realizes that "It may not save [his] life."
What I found the least of in this speech was logos. I'm not saying that logical things weren't said, the speech was just more emotional than logical. One great use of logos was when he was introducing his charity. He mentioned that a donation may not save him but that "It may save my children’s lives. It may save someone you love."

Jimmy Valvano's emotionally moving speech contains numerous examples of ethos, pathos, and logos. At the beginning of the speech when Valvano's name is announced and he walks up to the podium everybody in the audience was on their feet, applauding him. This was an example of ethos, since the audience all payed respect to Valvano and his legendary reputation. Basically the whole speech is ethos due to Valvano's well-known, outstanding speaking ability. Some examples of pathos in the speech are when Valvano said, "Now I’m fighting cancer, everybody knows that" and, "I’m a very emotional and passionate man. I can’t help it. That’s being the son of Rocco and Angelina Valvano... We hug, we kiss, we love." Both of those quotes appealed to the audience in an emotional sense. However, some of Valvano's examples of pathos did have some comedy in them. He started off his speech with, "That’s the lowest I’ve ever seen Dick Vitale since the owner of the Detroit Pistons called him in and told him he should go into broadcasting." Nobody really laughed at this joke because the audience didn't know how the cancer would be effecting Valvano. Even though his first joke didn't hit the spot, he did get some laughs with his Rutgers' Freshmen Basketball Team pep talk story. Last but not least, the method of logos was also present in Valvano's speech. He talked about the statistics of AIDS, and of the deaths due to cancer in 1993. Overall, Jimmy Valvano used all three methods of persuasion together to create his masterpiece of a speech

Awe inspiring speaker, NCAA champion, phenomenal story teller are all qualities that best define Jim Valvano. He is said to be the most likable and recognizable coach in all the land. Ten years after Valvano's national championship he developed cancer and in 1993 he was awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. The speech Valvano presented that night is remembered by many and will truly make you laugh, think, and cry. While delivering his speech Valvano said, "I'm a very emotional and passionate man. We hug, we kiss, we love." Pathos is commonly used in Valvano's speech and some may even consider him a man that values family and overall worldly love. Valvano portrays an image of sincere emotion when he states," Spend each day with some laughter and some thought to get your emotions going." He believes that you can truly impact someone else's life by smiling, laughing, or crying with them. So much in life can be missed if we blink too fast or bustle through valuable life lessons. Valvano signifies what's truly important in life. He said," focus on where you started, where you are, and where your going to be." Valvano is often thought of as being an advice giver. Valvano expresses his love for life when he says, "Life is very precious to me. I don't know how much I have left." He tells the audience "if you see me, smile and give me a hug because that's important to me." Valvano truly values life and everything that can be gained from it. He is a firm believer in knowledge, shown through logos. He says, " you should spend some time in thought" requiring that his audience throughly understands the message he is trying to portray. He asks the question, how do you go from where you are to where you want to be, and answers by saying, "I think you have to have an enthusiasm for life. You have to have a dream, a goal and you have to be willing to work for it." Valvano is quite an emotional speaker. He portrays an impactful message that leaves motivation and thought. He ends his speech with the powerful words, "Cancer can take away all my physical abilities but it cannot touch my mind, my heart, and my soul."

Jimmy V's speech was very emotional throughout. He used ethos, pathos, and logos in his speech often. In the second paragraph Jimmy uses pathos, when he says he has little time left in his life and it is very precious to him. In the paragraph where he explains that people should laugh, think, and cry everyday, is where he uses logos. Jimmy explains how important his family is to him. While he is explaining this he is using pathos in his speech. He tells the audience that to get their emotions going every single day, and to work hard for their dreams. He is using logos because they should logically be doing this. When Jimmy tells the audience that he needs their help in his new foundation, he uses ethos. He asks them to be able to help someone support a foundation, so that someone might be able to live; he uses pathos. His last part of the speech is a good example of pathos. He says that cancer cannot touch his mind, cannot touch his heart, and cannot touch his soul. This is a great ending to Jimmy V's speech and the whole thing shows how emotional cancer is. I really enjoyed this speech and thought that it was a great inspiration.

Jim Valvano is one of the most inspiring speakers that I have ever heard. His famous Espy speech is so good and so inspiring to many people. It's not just his words that mean so much, he is a confident and exciting speaker. He is very good in using different techniques in pathos, ethos, and logos. He uses pathos in his storytelling and his inspirational quotes. He talks about the story of his first game coaching. He brings up the great Vince Lombardi and his speech during his first game. Jimmy V talks about how he was embarrassed after saying exactly what Lombardi said. Also, his quotes are very inspiring. The most famous of his lines that he uses during that speech is "Don't give up, don't ever give up." He uses ethos very well too. He is the most confident speaker that I have ever heard. He puts his own brand on his speeches that make it entertaining and so fun to listen to. It is evident that he is a confident speaker as it seems like he never has anything planned and he just goes with it when speaking. This is evident when he talks about the light flashing for him to wrap it up and how he's not gonna stop. He uses logos with his structure of his speech. He starts out with an opening and has body of stories and analogies and ends the speech with a conclusion summarizing what he had already said. Jimmy V is an amazing speaker and he was a great coach, and he is one of the most inspiring people to me.

Jim Valvano's speech at the 93' ESPY awards is one of the most memorable speeches of all time. Valvano's speech made the audience stop thinking about the present and start focusing on the future, his speech contained the many rhetorical schemes of Pathos, logos, and Ethos. Valvanos speech would contain the scheme of Pathos when he would talk about his illness, especially because of the fact that mostly everyone listening to his speech knew that he was going to die soon due to his cancerous tumors. Valvano's speech contained the scheme of logos with the many three step approaches he would give the audience to help accomplish a goal they would have to help them better themselves and succeed in life. Valvano was such a respected coach, man and humanitarian that his whole speech contained Ethos because he was just somebody to look up to and this speech helped the incline of his credibility.

Jimmy Valavo's 1993 ESPY speech was a truly tear jerking and emotional speech. He used many rhetoric devices to pull this off. For example, he used ethos, pathos, and logos strategies throughout it. He starts off the speech using a mixture of both ethos and pathos. He tells the audience about his cancer which not only builds up his character in their eyes, but also makes the audience experience sadness and pity for him. This occurs when he says, "Time is very precious to me. I don’t know how much I have left, and I have some things that I would like to say." He also uses the logos method in the speech by saying, "the amount of money pouring in for AIDS is not enough, but is significant. But if I told you it’s ten times the amount that goes in for cancer research." He then adds in, "I also told you that 500,000 people will die this year of cancer. I also tell you that one in every four will be afflicted with this disease..." This logos strategy involves logic. Jimmy Valvano gives the audience some statistics to think about and to makes them really think over what he is saying. However, I believe that the pathos strategy is most effective because it not only makes the audience feel close to him and sympathize with him, but it also makes them more open to donating to the charity that he mentions during his speech. Overall, Jimmy Valvano's 1993 ESPY speech was an amazing speech that is still remembered today.

Throughout Jim Valvano's acceptance speech, he uses the literary devices of ethos, pathos, and logos. Valvano, coach of the 1983 North Carolina State Wolfpack basketball team, was a very successful leader of his team. Through his use of ethos, validation of character from the speaker, he draws in the audience, letting them know that he is indeed worthy of this award. He tells us that he was a coach for Rutgers University, a coach for North Carolina State, and how "we are starting the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research". Valvano also uses pathos, the use of emotion when speaking. Valvano says that "We should laugh... We should think... and we should cry." He also says to enjoy our lives, even though Valvano was dying of cancer. He constantly mentions his love for his family and how important they are to him. Ending his speech with these powerful words: "Cancer can take away all my physical ability. It cannot touch my mind; it cannot touch my heart; and it cannot touch my soul." Lastly, Valvano uses logos, using reason to connect with people. He reasons that he and other cancer patients need help from everyone to donate to cancer research to help save their lives. In my opinion, I think that pathos was the most successful strategy used in his speech. I feel that it got the audience chocked up with emotion and allowed them to laugh and cry with Valvano for one of the last times in his life. As you can see, not only was Valvano a master of basketball, but a master of connecting with people.

Jimmy Valvano's moving ESPY speech appeals to the listener on multiple levels; ethos, pathos, and logos. Obviously he was a very talented speaker, and studied speakers such as Vince Lombardi. He used to practice writing speeches and motivating people. He was able to use this gift at the end of his life to found the Jimmy V foundation for cancer research.
Ethos is one of the forms of persuasive arguments, and it depends on the ability of the speaker to convince the listener that they are a credible source. An example would be when Jimmy Valvano explains to the audience the best ways to live and reflect on their life. He is an expert at this because he was dying and he spent a lot of time reflecting on his life and his relationships with others. He says the way to live your life is to " Laugh, Think, and Cry".
The second form of argument he uses is pathos. Pathos is when a speaker draws an emotional response to the audience. The audiences sympathy for him comes from the fact that he has cancer and he appeals to this sympathy by being very honest about his disease and life expectancy. He says " That they gave him a limited amount of time to speak but he is going to take as much as he needs because he doesn't know how much time he has life.
The last form of argument he uses is logos, which appeals to logic. His appeal to logic is that many people die of cancer every year, yet nothing is being done. He is saying that more people need to start putting money and effort into cancer research then is being done.
In summary I think that Jimmy Valvano is a very good speaker and famous people like Robin Robberts and Stuart Scott have been inspired by him.

Jim Valvano's speech after winning the Arthur Ashe Courage Award affected so many struggling people's lives, not only reaching them through emotion but through logic and authority as well. This well-known address appealed to the audience in three rhetoric ways - ethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos is an appeal to the credibility and authenticity of the speaker, generally achieved by having expertise or experience with the topic you are talking about. Jim Valvano was a real cancer patient, and everyone could see that he dealt with the results of it every day. Since Valvano was speaking on optimism with cancer, the audience could trust that he himself had lots of experience with cancer and its effects. Logos is appeal to audiences through logical reasoning. In this particular speech, Valvano points out how he doesn't have much time left, and that his Foundation that is being funded by ESPN will help the cause of cancer research. It was logical to support this organization because of everyone that it would help. Pathos is the appeal to audiences through the use of emotion. This can be done through things like jokes or sad stories. This is the most used rhetoric audience appeal in this particular speech. Valvano begins the speech off with a joke, so the audience will pay attention right from the start. Throughout his oration, he talks about his family, his experience with cancer, and funny stories, which all affect people on an emotional level. Jim Valvano was a truly great man who deserved the award he got and is an excellent speaker.

In this speech Mr. Valvano incorporated ethos, pathos, and logos various ways through the stories he told within it. He used ethos at the very beginning when making fun of his friend; "That's the lowest I've ever seen Dick Vitale..." And when he announces his gratitude for winning an Arthur Ash award. Whenever he introduces one of his friends into his speech, he also uses ethos. His pathos appeal is whenever he mentions his cancer. In my opinion I think the most memorable statement was his closing line; "Cancer can take away all my physical abilities. It cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart and it cannot touch my soul. And those three things are going to carry on forever." His logos appeal is how he uses the charity statistics for both AIDS and cancer, and his advice in the beginning about how to have a good day; "We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. Number three is you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think and you cry, that’s a full day."

During the 1993 Espy's, Jimmy V gave a speech that appealed to one's emotion, one's character, and one's logic. He is able to appeal to one's emotion, or uses the strategy of pathos, throughout the entire speech. The one time that he clearly appeals to one's emotion is when he states: "I also told you that 500,000 people will die this year of cancer. I also tell you that one in every four will be afflicted with this disease." If this doesn't get to you a little bit, then you might not be human. Jimmy V appeals to one's character, or uses the strategy of ethos, by trying to transcribe his success into money for cancer research and get people to donate to this cause. During the speech, he never does say this exactly, but one could tell it was implied. The speech uses logical reasoning and the strategy of logos by almost all of his speech making sense, and being logical. The best way he used logos was by stating that the amount of donation money for AIDS research is ten times the amount that goes in for cancer. I do believe he uses the strategy of pathos the best for the main reason being that he appealed to one's emotion throughout the entire course of the speech.

The speech that Mr. Jimmy Valvano gave in 1993 was very touching. He was a powerful, intelligent, and excellent speaker. After Analyzing his moving 1993 ESPY awards speech, I noticed that he made many great statements and gave good advice to everyone. Also Valvano made appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos. His speech was mostly pathos but their were good elements of ethos and logos as well. Here is what I found:

Ethos: In the first two paragraphs, Jim is building up his credibility and showing his experience as a speaker. He starts off with a joke and says "how honored he is to be mentioned in the same breath as Arthur Ashe." Jim was known for being a excellent speaker and everyone at the beginning of his speech was very excited and paying great attention to him.
Pathos: Jim's speech was full of pathos. In fact the almost the entire thing was pathos. He poured his heart, emotions, and his soul into that speech. He talked about his life, family and friends, and his job as a coach. Jimmy also said that "you should laugh, you should think, and you should cry everyday." Very emotional guy who again poured his heart and his soul into this speech.
Logos: There were some logical statements and facts in his speech. For example, he mentioned a statistic about the money given to AIDS research compared to the money given to cancer research. Also he mentions facts about Vince Lombardi and his book Commitment to Excellence. Not as much logos as pathos.

Jim Valvano was a master at using the rhetorical devices of ethos, logos, and pathos. A famous basketball coach; he won the 1993 Arthur Ashe Courage Award for his admirable fight with cancer. While giving his acceptance speech, he used his time to promote giving to his new charity for cancer research. At the beginning of his speech, he shared the story of his first coaching job. He poked fun at himself and showed how ethos could get an audience to be more comfortable with the speaker. Logos was used when he talked about the statistics for deaths caused by cancer and the lack of donation money. By telling the audience the facts, he was able to show that a cure could not be found without the generosity of others. From there, the speech was presented through pathos. Valvano pulled on the heartstrings of the audience when he told them he would never give up and hoped to come to the ESPY Awards next year. His powerful words and charismatic tone made people notice the pain he was in and think about their own family members who might have been fighting cancer. The most effective strategy used in Valvano's speech was pathos. By talking about his family, people were able to see the hardship they were going through and feel bad for him. His message that cancer "Cannot touch my mind; it cannot touch my heart; and it cannot touch my soul" resonated through the audience. Phrases like this and "Don't give up, don't ever give up" moved all who listened to the speech and helped to kick off more support for cancer research. It is an incredible example of how a rhetorical device like pathos can help people believe in a good cause. By appealing to the heart instead of the mind, Jim Valvano's speech is still remembered to this day.

Jim Valvano’s acceptance speech was so powerful end emotional that people so many years later are deeply moved by it. He begins his speech using ethos. He connects to the crowd joking how he doesn’t have cue cards and therefore he was going to speak for as long as he wanted. He also starts with a joke about Dick Vitale. Valvano then goes onto speak about what he values and what his family values. At this point, pathos is being used. He starts putting more emotion into his speech as he talks about cancer. He puts his emotions in perspective saying, “ If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day.” As he begins to tell a story, he puts he continues with pathos. He talks about his life and tells a story about his first coaching job and how he wanted to be like Vince Lombardi. He wanted to motivate his players as Lombardi did. Valvano moves his speech to the topic of cancer and the need for cancer research. By doing this, he is using logos. He explains the facts about the research going into the study of AIDS and the research going into the study of cancer. He tells the crowd that he will be starting a foundation that will raise money for cancer research. Towards the end of his speech, he goes back to pathos, and puts more emphasis and emotion into talking about the importance of life. He tells them, “ It may not save my life. It may save my children’s lives. It may save someone you love.” I think this really shows the importance for research for cancer and makes the crowd emotional. He really uses pathos when he states that cancer will never take away his soul, mind, and heart. Pathos is the most important aspect of this speech and it is most definitely the most effective.

North Carolina State basketball coach, Jim Valvano, delivered an amazing acceptance speech at the 1993 ESPY's Awards. The speech was known to have people laughing, thinking, and crying-which Valvano believed, that people should do everyday. All throughout the speech Valvano used three ways to appeal the audience: pathos, ethos, and logos. Pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response. Valvano used pathos by confirming to the audience that he was diagnosed with cancer earlier in the year. He talked about the beginning of the Jimmy V Foundation and how it was made to fund cancer research. He made the audience strongly emotional by saying, "It may save my children's lives," he brought up the thought of people's futures and how they deserve to live them out fully. Ethos is an appeal to ethics, and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility of the persuader. Valvano used ethos by talking about his old memories and personal stories. He told the story of how he wanted to give his Rutgers basketball team an amazing half time speech and he walked in and said, "Gentlemen, we will be successful this year, if you can focus on three things, and three things only. Your family, your religion and the Green Bay Packers.” He showed the audience what type of person he was and his credibility. Logos is an appeal to logic, and is a way of persuading an audience by reason. Valvano uses logos when he talked about the effects of cancer. "I'll also tell you that five hundred thousand people will die this year of cancer. And I'll also tell you that one in every four will be afflicted with this disease, and yet, somehow, we seem to have put it in a little bit of the background.” Valvano used this strategy to get the point across of the importance of donating to cancer research. After Jim Valvano used these three amazing strategies it made the night and that speech unforgettable.

Ethos is a method of persuading by using credibility. It means that you can believe the character you are listening to. When Jimmy Valvano made specific points that “we should laugh”, “we should think”, and “we should cry” everyday, it is ethos. I can fully believe that he is telling me some beneficial things we should do everyday to have a good life.
Using emotional appeal to persuade some one is a method called pathos. Jimmy Valvano really gives a heart-touching speech that appeals to peoples’ emotions. When Valvano talks about cancer in his speech, he says, “It cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart and it cannot touch my soul. And those three things are going to carry on forever.” This really touched everyone because it let us know that even bad things like cancer cannot ruin our happiness. He used the pathos method there.
Logos is a method of persuading by a more logical approach. With logos, you persuade people by reason. Talking about his cancer, Jimmy Valvano says, “I also told you that 500,000 people will die this year of cancer. I also tell you that one in every four will be afflicted with this disease.” He was using the method of logos when he stated this. Valvano used facts and logic to persuade people to donate money to his foundation and other causes.

Jim Valano evokes pathos by simply just talking to the audience the way he was speaking to them. They were already touched due to the fact that they knew Jim had cancer. By him speaking for as long as he spoke about the topic that you should simply enjoy life to the fullest and live every day as though it were your last, it showed people he was truly stronger than cancer in his mind, body and soul. Pathos was everyone's first instinct because he had cancer. When people hear about cancer, their first instinct is to be sad or feel bad for the person who was diagnosed with it. Ethos was expressed when Jim brought up the idea of being a team. Being there for each other, and bringing others around you up. Being and having a positive outlook on life will not only help you in the long run, but will also Inspire and affect the people around you to do the same. Despite having cancer, Jim turns what he has been told to be a bad thing, into a good thing. By doing everything he can to make finding a cure possible. Logos is expressed by the way he started the speech. He tried starting it with a joke but no one understood so he moved on and started with a short story about how he was a couch for a team and he wanted to give a short but sweet locker room speech. And he ended up messing up when he said it but even though he messed up, his team still respected his efforts to pump them up and tried their hardest anyway. His speech touched the souls of many the night he gave it and still continues to touch souls, today. It's amazing to see what the efforts of one person, can do for millions of others.

On March 4, 1993, Jim Valvano received the inaugural Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award. Like other great speakers, he used the rhetorical techniques called ethos, the appeal of character, pathos, the appeal to emotion, and logos, the appeal of logic. In the opening of his speech, he added ethos when he said, "That’s the lowest I’ve ever seen Dick Vitale since the owner of the Detroit Pistons called him in and told him he should go into broadcasting." In terms of his own image, Valvano's statement gave him the credibility to deliver a more effective speech to his audience. He also used the rhetoric scheme of logos within his speech. Valvano discussed the organizations that raise money for cancer, and he gave alarmingly high statistics like "one in four people will be afflicted with this disease." Lastly, he applied pathos when he mentioned, "I'm fighting cancer, everybody knows that." He also brought his audience to think when he said that raising money for cancer and AIDS research could "save someone you love." Besides his personal battle and his support for research relating to the diseases, Valvano also humorously recalled the story about his first coaching job. These aspects added an emotional appeal to the listeners because he shared his personal stories and even incorporated his audience's lives into his speech. By using these powerful rhetorical schemes, Jim Valvano made a very impactful and beautiful speech that many people still carry in their hearts today.

Three different forms of persuasion are pathos, ethos, and logos. Pathos relates to emotions and values. Its main techniques are used in stories, inspirational quotes, and vivid language. Ethos relates to credibility and trust. Its main techniques are used in personal branding, confidence in delivery, and cites credible sources. Logos relates to logic, reason, and proof. Its main techniques are used in structure of speech (opening/body/conclusion), references to studies, statistics, case studies, etc..., and comparisons, analogies, and metaphors. All of these moving rhetorical schemes are present in Jimmy Valvano's speech. Valvano said, "To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special." I think this is an example of pathos because it shows his values he lives by every day. He also said, "As Dick said, I'm a very emotional, passionate man. I can't help it. That's being the son of Rocco and Angelina Valvano. It comes with the territory. We hug, we kiss, we love. And when people say to me how do you get through life or each day, it's the same thing." I think this is an example of ethos because Valvano is sharing something personal about himself. He brings up his parents and how he views his life everyday. Jimmy Valvano said, "I just got one last thing, I urge all of you, all of you, to enjoy your life, the precious moments you have. To spend each day with some laughter and some thought, to get you're emotions going." I think this is an example of logos because he is sharing something he thinks is important and morally logical for people to do every day. I think the most effective strategy used is pathos because Jimmy Valvano gets very emotional and personal throughout the speech. He shares personal experiences and gives advice that he has lived by.

Jimmy Valvano's speech at the 1993 ESPY Awards truly touched my heart. He was truly an amazing speaker and used the rhetorical schemes of ethos, pathos, and logos. Jim started of by using ethos. He used this scheme to humble himself in the eyes of the crowd, he spoke from the heart. He said, "I can't tell you what an honor it is to even be mentioned in the same breath as Arthur Ashe." Jimmy continued to use ethos when he made a joke when they cued him to wrap up his speech "you got a lot, hey va fa napoli, buddy. You got a lot." Jim also used pathos a lot in his speech. In his first few minutes of talking he said "time is very precious to me. I do t know how much I have left." Jimmy also used stories in his speech when he talked about his first coaching job and how nervous he was. Finally Jim also used logos. He used logic to when he talked about the three things that are important to him "where you started; where you are; and where you're gonna be." Jimmy also uses logos when he said "if you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a a full day."

There are many different forms of ethos, pathos, and logos throughout the hole speech. Since it is said to be a very moving and emotional speech that is where pathos comes in. Especially when he talks of spending however long he has left with his family. Even when he told that story of him trying to get his team ready before the games and he accidentally says the wrong team. That was pretty funny. The speech shows ethos whenever he describes his beliefs. The belief that a full day includes laughter and tears. Even how he uses the power of threes can be considered ethos. He uses logos whenever he talks about receiving money for cancer research. How even though there are important diseases that need funding cancer is still a main contender.

Pathos, logos, and ethos are three ways to appeal to a reader or member of the audience. Using emotions, logic, and one's own character are effective methods when publicly speaking or writing. These methods are all used by Jimmy V in his speech when accepting the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the first ever Espy's. Jimmy V uses logos when he says that "one in every four will be afflicted with this disease, (cancer)" Jimmy V states a statistical fact about how widespread cancer is so his listeners can understand better. Logos is used to make the audience aware of the truth or of facts that are concrete. Jimmy V uses ethos when he says, "I'm a very emotional and passionate man." This statement reveals Jimmy V's character and allows him to connect with the audience. The last way Jimmy V appeals to the audience is through pathos, or emotion. Jimmy V always believed you had to "have an enthusiasm for life." He was a passionate man who lived life emotionally and experienced every moment to its full effect. That's why I believe pathos is the most effective way to appeal to an audience. Pathos is the most effective way because when you experience something and your emotions come to life they override everything else. Your emotions control who you are which is why pathos is more effective than ethos. When you become emotional you lose the ability to think critically and logically rendering logos less effective than pathos. Using emotions is the most effective way to engage and truly touch an audience.

In Jimmy Valvano's speech when he wins the Arthur Ashe Award of Courage, he uses all three methods of persuasion, ethos, pathos, and logos. He uses the method of logos when he says, "I'll also tell you that five hundred thousand people will die this year of cancer. And I'll also tell you that one in every four will be afflicted with this disease, and yet, somehow, we seem to have put it in a little bit of the background." This shows logos because it is using logical data to prove his point that donating to this worthy cause is important because so many people are affected by it. The second method of persuasion shown is ethos. This is shown when Jimmy says, "I rode on the plane up today with Mike Krzyzewski, my good friend and a wonderful coach. People don't realize he's ten times a better person than he is a coach, and we know he's a great coach." This shows ethos because it shows the audience that he is a kind hearted and professional person, which in the long run will help people want to donated to his cause because they will know it's a good organization. The third and probably most important method of persuasion found in this speech is pathos. There are so many different spots in this speech that he uses pathos that it is hard to pick them all out. One part however, is when he says, "I don't know how much I have left..." This shows pathos by letting the audience into his personal life and journey as he is going through the disease. Another time he uses this is when he says, "Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day." This shows pathos because it allows the audience to see that he has emotions too just like any other human being. This speech was very empowering and made me think a lot about how I see the world.

Jim Valvano, otherwise known as Jimmy V., started an organization for cancer research which was announced at the 1993 ESPN ESPY Awards. Jimmy V. had a great speech that gave me the chills from listening because it engaged me emotionally, logically, and ethically. And those things are the basic three things of the most common rhetoric terms: ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is the character appeal of a person and I thought that was displayed in the beginning of his speech. You could really decipher the kind of person he was by talking about how he was raised by his parents to be a passionate man who should live his life to the fullest not knowing how much time you have left. Next in his speech, pathos is exhibited. Pathos is the emotional part of rhetoric that allows you to connect with your audience. I found pathos to be all the way from his thankfulness to be mentioned in the breath as Arthur Ashe, to being inspired by the coach of the Green Bay Packers, to remembering where he came from. Jimmy V. really inspired many by his speech because of his emotional appeal to the audience. He remembered where he came from and that was one his large messages he was trying to promote. Finally, he used logos. Logos is the logical appeal in speaking or writing. Jimmy used logos from telling the audience its important to know where you are and where you wanna be, to promoting the Arthur Ashe foundation, to promoting his foundation for cancer research after connecting with the audience.

Jimmy Valvano's emotional and inspiring speech delivered at the ESPY's Awards after winning the Arthur Ashe Courage Award portrays appeal though ethos, pathos, and logos. In Valvano's speech, ethos, the building up of character and credibility, is used throughout. One example of ethos is when he declares his idol, Vince Lombardi. Valvano speaks about how the book "Commitment to Excellence", written by Lombardi, and how that book has impacted him as a basketball coach. By doing this, he is going beyond just the sport of basketball and grasping many football fan's attention and interest. Pathos, the emotional appeal, is his most effective form. Throughout his speech, Valvano gets laughs out of the audience. For example, he talks about the first time that he gave a speech. The first speech that he ever delivered was to the freshman basketball team at Rutgers University. Valvano speaks about how he referenced the book "Commitment to Excellence" written by his idol Vince Lombardi. Going by what Lombardi wrote, he waited outside the doors of the locker room for quite a while and then slammed into them in an attempt to make a dramatic entrance. He also speaks about how he got the team names mixed up during his speech to the team and said "The Green Bay Packers" instead of "Rutgers Basketball". Valvano's use of logos, the appeal to logic, is portrayed in his use of facts about cancer. He says "I'll tell you that every one in four people will be afflicted with this disease". He also states that "500,000 people this year will die of cancer". By stating these facts, he is building up a logical reason why cancer should be taken into account more often and how it's happening now and that we need to take action.

In 1993, Jim Valvano won the Aurther Ash Courage Award for his amazing battle against his cancer. Jim gave an uplifting speech that will live on forever. Jim brought all aspects of his life together in a short speech that generated emotions throughout the crowd. Jim showed all ethos, pathos, and logos in his speech. Ethos , or building up ones credibility was used when he was first given the courage award. Jim has tumors all over his body and was very weak at the time of the award show. He introduced the topic with some jokes to make the crowd open and listen to what he has to say by telling a funny story about his failure in one of his first motivational speeches. Next, Jim showed logos while talking about ESPN and their donations for helping cancer awarness and support in the cancer comunity. He sperted out facts about the horrible disease and the lack of research for it. He adds pathos to the speech by telling the millions of people watching that this research may not change his life, but it may just change our childrens lives. He alerted the crowd about his loss of time in this world and that he will enjoy every second of what he has left.

Jim Valvano's speech is a very good example of different ways to persuade the audience. He uses pathos, an emotional appeal, logos, logical appeal, and ethos, the speaker's character appeal. Some examples of ethos in his speech are when he talks about Mike Krzyzewski. He says, "I rode on the plane up today with Mike Krzyzewski, my good friend and a wonderful coach." This shows that his respect towards his peers. Another example of ethos is when he starts talking about Vince Lombardi. "So my idol as a coach was Vince Lombardi..." By saying this it allows football fans to value Valvano's ideas more. He is also stepping out of his comfort zone of basketball and appealing to other sports. The last example of ethos is when he states, "People think I have courage. The courage in my family are my wife Pam, my three daughters, here, Nicole, Jamie, LeeAnn, my mom, who's right here too." This shows that he has strong family values and that makes him likable in the audiences' eye. The next method that Valvano uses is pathos. He tries to make light out of his situation by being witty and saying, "I got tumors over my body. I'm worried about some guy in the back going thirty seconds..." This shows the audience that he's funny and able to make the crowd laugh. But the way he starts his speech is a way to fill the audience with empathy towards this inspiring man. He says, " Time is very precious to me. I don't know how much I have left." He ends his speech with the perfect example of how much pathos is stressed in this speech, “Cancer can take away all my physical ability. It cannot touch my mind; it cannot touch my heart; and it cannot touch my soul. And those three things are going to carry on forever. I thank you and God bless you all.” The last method Valvano uses is logos. He uses logos when he is telling the audience about the need for money t research cancer. To make his argument valid he tells them, "... five hundred people this year will die of cancer. And I'll also tell you that one in every four people will be afflicted with this disease..." This is a good way to get the audience to see the logic and the need for money. Valvano uses very good methods to get the audience to side with him in the fight and research against cancer.

Jim Valvano was a coach for the North Carolina men's basketball team. Basketball was only one of his many skills. He was an amazing speaker and always gave great speeches. In 1993 when Valvano received the Arthur Ashe Courage award, he delivered one of the most memorable speeches in the world. In his speech, he used many rhetorical methods like pathos, ethos and logos. Pathos is the appeal to emotions, ethos is the appeal of character, logos is the appeal of logic. By using each of these methods, he made his speech interesting and caught everyone's attention. When Valvano says, "That's the lowest I've seen Dick Vitale since the owner of the Detroit Pistons called him in and told him he should go into broadcasting." Jimmy Valvano used ethos in this statement. He used logos countless times in this speech. With his own condition, Valvano was able to talk about many shocking, but true data. One very important fact he said was, "500,000 people will die this year because of cancer." He included pathos in his speech when he said, "Cancer can take away all my physical ability. It cannot touch my mind; it cannot touch my heart; and it cannot touch my soul." Jim Valvano made a very influential and appealing speech that even today people still talk about his words.

This very moving speech shows appeals to pathos, ethos, and logos. According to pathos, an emotional approach, Valvano talks about his past life as a North Carolina coach and the hearty pep talks he would give to the team before each game. He also takes an emotional approach by talking about his short future due to cancer. This brings a tear to the audience's eyes, knowing that he wouldn't be with us much longer. Valvano's speech also shows ethos, a credibility approach. The crowd was pleased to see a well-known face speak on the stage. People know Valvano as the North Carolina State Wolfpack coach. One last appeal in the speech is logos, a logical approach. Valvano talked about what was most important in life: family, religion, and the Green Bay Packers. He also shared more serious tones in his speech. I think his most effective approach is to be emotional, pathos. I think pathos had the best overall effect because it caught the audience's attention and kept them indulged in the long speech. His jokes made people laugh, his stories from his past made people cry, and the morals of his stories made people think about what they valued in life. People get emotional when they hear Valvano's speech mostly when he mentions his cancer because cancer is a sensitive subject. The pathos aspect of Valvano's speech also gained the help of many people to donate to his foundation of cancer research.

Jim Valvano's speech after winning the Arthur Ashe Courage Award appealed to ethos, pathos, and logos. In my opinion, the speech was mostly pathos, or emotional. Valvano described his battle with cancer and how he doesn't know how much time he has left and that you need to spend your last moments with your family. He states that if your days are full of laughing, crying, and thinking, your days are complete. Jim Valvano finishes off his speech by talking about how every day he is going to thank God for the day. Next, the speech appeals to logos when he talks about raising money for cancer research. He says that the amount of money raised for AIDS is 10x the amount raised for cancer, and that 500,000 (one in every four) people are afflicted with this disease. Finally, the speech appeals to ethos when Valvano talks about his background coaching at Rutgers University, and when he shares his wisdom in saying that you should fill your life with happiness and fullness. He shares a lot of his wisdom, morals, and character in this speech. All around, this speech has aspects of all ethos, pathos, and logos, and in my eyes is a very heartfelt and moving speech or "pep talk" that I think everyone should listen to once in their life

Jimmy V’s speech is very emotional and sad, using pathos a lot. He opens up his speech by using a joke, which is ethos, trying to appeal to the audience. Then he talks about his cancer diagnosis. This is very sad and emotional to hear. But Jimmy V says that nothing has changed for him because he has always been a very emotional and passionate person. He alludes to Vince Lombardy, the coach of Notre Dame and says that he uses his famous “family, religion, and green bay packers”, speech for his first speech as a twenty-one year old coach. This was very lighthearted and a mixture of ethos and pathos. Towards the end of his speech, Jimmy V uses logos and pathos by talking about the Jimmy V Foundation, saying that it would benefit so many people and tells people to give their support. Jimmy says, “Their money and their dollars and they’re helping me – we are starting The Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research. And its motto is “Don’t give up . . . Don’t ever give up.” This is very emotional and this motto is very inspiring to me. I really enjoyed in Jimmy’s speech when he used the rule of three, such as, “cancer can’t touch my brain, heart, and soul”, because it really made me remember it and its significance.

During Jimmy V's speech at the ESPY's, after receiving the Arthur Ashe Courage award, expressed pathos, ethos, and logos. Throughout the whole speech Valvano mostly steers towards the pathos strategy. Pathos takes the emotional route towards things and that is strictly what he did during his acceptance. Jimmy talked about his struggle with his diagnosis and how he never imagined himself living life with cancer. He pledges to everyone to live in the moment and appreciate your surrounding. He did not know how much longer he had but he was living everyday as a happy day. Although he has tumors everywhere in his body he kept saying how he could make of the day with the smile. He also incorporated a little bit of ethos while giving his background of his past career. He shares his experiences of coaching at Rutgers University and recalls a moment when he first started his job at Rutgers. He embarrassed himself in front of the whole team by saying the Green Bay Packers instead of the Rutgers. This story made the crowd laugh and smile. Lastly, Jimmy V incorporated logos while bringing up his cancer research foundation called The Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research. He says how everyone is donating to research for Aids and no ones thinking about another deadly disease right in front of them, cancer. Jimmy Valvanos speech included a certain theme, which was the Rules of Threes. Through all his words he was persistent in giving inspirational tips in patterns of threes. For example he stated, how everyday you should, "laugh, think, and cry, and that would be a full day." He also said "Cancer cannot touch my heart, my brain, or my soul" and "when i wake up i think of where i was, where i am, and where i wanna be." Jimmy V's speech at the ESPY's was extremely emotional, powerful, and warming to everyone. His wise words inspired all even to this day.

Jimmy Valvano will always be remembered for his historic upset and thrilling NCAA national championship win in 1983 and his moving and empowering speech given at the 1993 ESPYS. His speech will go down as one of the most famous and emotional speeches ever given. Jimmy V took a very different approach at this memorable speech as he used ethos pathos and logos to touch the hearts of the listeners and viewers. Jimmy expressed logos by his wise words of “Don’t Give up. Don't ever give up.” These famous seven words are used to logically tell us the viewer that anything in life is possible no matter how much of a fight you have to put up. Secondly, Jimmy V uses ethos to tell us how we should live each day of our lives. Jimmy states “Everyday you should laugh, cry and think. If you do that then you have had a full day.” His powerful words are specifically telling us the character or person that we should be to live a happy life from day to day. Finally Jimmy uses ethos which is the main purpose of this speech. The main purpose of this speech was to tell the whole sports community and bring the whole community as a whole together to raise money to fight a disease that Jimmy was dying from which was cancer. On this warm June night in 1993, Jimmy announced the start of his new foundation, that would help find a cure to this deadly and painful disease. He used this speech to bring awareness to his new charity. Ever since this speech, the Jimmy V foundation has raised millions of dollars for Cancer research. The Jimmy V speech has taught me to live life to the fullest and take everything for granted because life is unpredictable. But most importantly to never give up!

Jim Valvano is one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time, inspirational public speaker, and cancer victim. In1993, Valvano won the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. His following speech inspired the audience and it continues to inspire people today. Whether he knew it or not Valvano used ethos, pathos, and logos, making his speech one of the greatest speeches of all time.
Ethos is the least used form of rhetoric in Valvano's speech. Valvano himself offers more ethos than the words in his speech. Jim Valvano demanded attention whether it was his words or his actions. Everyone looks at him and knows he's about to say something good. He inspires people to do things with their lives. The fact that Valvano is speaking at the EPSYs makes his speech plausible.
Valvano's speech is mainly comprised of pathos. He uses personal experiences to draw the audience in and keep their attention. He tells little anecdotes of being a coach, and stories of his family that really bring the audience into the life of Jim Valvano. At one point he says "We hug, we kiss, we love." Referring to his family Valvano shares his family values. He uses pathos in groups of threes. When talking about his first time coaching he tells that he walked into the locker room hoping to say "Gentlemen, we will be successful this year, if you can focus on three things, and three things only. Your family, your religion and the Rutgers Basketball." Similar to Vince Lombardi who said "Gentlemen, we will be successful this year, if you can focus on three things, and three things only. Your family, your religion and the Green Bay Packers. Instead he ended up saying the same thing as Coach Lombari. But the point got across to his team because he was that kind of man. He required attention, and attention he got.
In the end of his speech Valvano uses logos. He introduces for the first time the Jimmy V Foundation and starts to talk about cancer research. He begins with the Arthur Ashe Foundation and how it has raised millions of dollars for AIDS research. Valvano wants this for his foundation, he wants millions of dollars to be raised for cancer patients who suffer the same thing he suffers. He uses a harsh reality to get a point across. Despite what he is dealing with he knows he won't make it unless he keeps a positive attitude. He believes that even though he has cancer nothing has changed he will keep being Jimmy V he even says so, "Cancer can take away all my physical abilities. It cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart and it cannot touch my soul. And those three things are going to carry on forever." He knows that lies legacy will lead on after his death and that his speeches will be legendary. "Don't give up. Don't ever give up."

Jim Valvano was an amazing person and a remarkable public speaker. His acceptance speech for the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award at the 1983 Espy Awards was very memorable. Valvano's public speaking skill was just one of the things that made him famous. This speech can be analyzed according to pathos, ethos, and logos. Most of this speech is pathos, or appealing to emotions, because Valvano was a very emotional and passionate man. Also, receiving this award made him and everyone else emotional. An example of pathos is when Valvano says,"To spend each day with some laughter and some thought, to get your emotions going. To be enthusiastic every day, and to keep your dreams alive in spite of problems whatever you have. The ability to be able to work hard for your dreams to come true, to become a reality." My reaction to this was that I immediately thought about how I live my life and if I'm living life to the fullest. It made me emotional to think about all of the great opportunities that life brings each day. Another example of pathos is when he mentions his family and how important family is which makes us all feel something because our family relationships are very emotional. An example of ethos, or an appeal to ethics or his credibility is when he says, "This is something I certainly will treasure forever. But, as it was said on the tape, and I also don’t have one of those things going with the cue cards, so I’m going to speak longer than anybody else has spoken tonight. That’s the way it goes." This proves his credibility as a courageous person receiving the courage award because he went up to the stage and showed that he is confident and deserving of this award. Finally, an example of logos, or an appeal to logic, is when he says, "But if I told you it’s ten times the amount that goes in for cancer research. I also told you that 500,000 people will die this year of cancer." He opened people's eyes to the real numbers of this problem and asked for their support in his cancer research foundation because he wanted to, "bring it back on the front table." Ultimately, Jim Valvano's historic speech made me laugh, think, and cry.

Jim Valvano's moving speech about his life, the struggles he is going through, and the positive outlook he has about it all is extremely moving. It portrays each ethos, pathos, and logos in it. Valvano uses ethos, building up his credibility, by starting off by saying that accepting this award is something he will treasure forever. He then says that there are three things we should do everyday, which is to laugh, think, and cry. His use of threes here draws people in and makes them think. He then goes on the talk about his coaching which adds on to the ethos effect. Pathos is probably the most dominant characteristic in this speech because of its emotional appeal. Throughout the speech Valvano talks about his cancer and how he hopes to defeat it. He discusses how family and religion are the most important things in life. When Valvano said that everyday he laughs, thinks, and cries ethos, but it was even more so pathos. It shows how he is a man of great emotion. The most moving part of his speech was at the end when he says, "Cancer can take away all my physical abilities. It cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart, and it cannot touch my soul." By saying this it shows that he believes that no matter what the cancer does to him he will still be himself and will do his best to live his life to the fullest. This speech is also full of logical appeal, logos. Valvano talks about his life, his coaching, his, family, and his cancer, which are all logical things.

Jim Valvano's speech is full of the three different types of persuasion, pathos, logos, and ethos. Pathos is a type of persuasion that evokes emotion. Jimmy V's speech is very emotional. He talks about time. He states, "Time is very precious to me. I don’t know how much I have left..." This line evokes much emotion in the audience. Jimmy V is a happy and grateful man. He had cancer and didn't know if he was going to live much longer. He valued time for what is it and made the most of his life. This speech is so emotional because the audience hears from someone who is well known and is going through a tough time in his life, but he never gives up. He is an inspiration to everyone. Logos is an appeal to logic. In Jimmy V's speech he uses some facts and information to convince the audience that he is being reliable. Jim Valvono makes this speech to bring awareness to cancer and to raise money for research. These facts prove why he is giving this speech to them. He states, "I also told you that 500,000 people will die this year of cancer. I also tell you that one in every four will be afflicted with this disease, and yet somehow, we seem to have put it in a little bit of the background. I want to bring it back on the front table." Ethos is a form of persuading the audience the credibility of the speaker. Jimmy V states multiple times of his basketball coaching and playing careers. He has so much experience in the basketball field that there is no doubt that he is lying. The best strategy in this speech is pathos. By using pathos, Jimmy V is capturing the listener's attention and it brings more meaning to the speech. Jim Valvano was a great basketball player, coach, and speaker who lead an amazing life and still inspires people today.

Valvano's speech, even though it is come up on the spot, it withholds many key pieces to a great speech. Valvano's most powerful element to his speech is obviously pathos. He uses pathos by talking about his life for him and his family and talking about what cancer limits you to do. The more and more he talks about cancer, the more people see the pathos. Pathos' intention is to draw out emotion which connects and intrigues you when reading or listening to something. Although pathos is quite self evident, logos and ethos are there too. Logos is shown in him talking about himself and what he has done and what is to come. If he didn't talk about himself in a speech after winning an award it would draw even more emotion. He then uses logos by showing them that giving to cancer research is only logical and that doing it will help many. Ethos is part of that too when he says that providing donations to cancer research may save them, their family, and possibly their future family. He describes how it is only ethical to take every day and cherish it. To have all the emotions in one day and allow yourself to take as much as you can from each day you are on this earth. In everything Jimmy Valvano says you can find a bit of pathos, ethos, and logos, which makes this speech very successful and memorable.

Jim Valvano's award acceptance speech involves all three of the rhetorical methods of persuasion: pathos, logos, and ethos. "Time is very precious to me. I don’t know how much I have left, and I have some things that I would like to say. Hopefully, at the end, I will have said something that will be important to other people, too." A few sentences can say so much. This quotation from Jim Valvano's speech is an example of the ethos rhetorical method of persuasion. It is a way to express the credibility behind a speaker. This quotation tells of how Valvano's speech is going to be structured, in a way, because of Valvano's emotional background. Another direct use of ethos would be in the following quote: "I was coaching at Rutgers University, that was my first job, oh that’s wonderful (reaction to applause), and I was the freshman coach." This is a direct use of ethos because it talks of his background and credibility in what he is saying. There are not many examples of logos in the speech. However, where logos is left out, pathos makes up for it. There are many examples of usage of the method of pathos throughout the speech. It is a very emotionally driven speech as it is one about something very personal to Valvano. I believe that, in this speech, and possibly overall, the rhetorical method of pathos is the most effective strategy. I say this because emotion is what speaks to a majority of people the most. Emotions are a huge, distinct part of humans and it is incredibly easy to manipulate them. In Valvano's speech, he loosens up the crowd's emotions by telling a humorous anecdote from his first year coaching. The crowd laughs along with him as he tells the punchline: "I’m getting this picture of Lombardi before his first game, and he said, 'Gentlemen, we will be successful this year, if you can focus on three things, and three things only. Your family, your religion and the Green Bay Packers.' They knocked the walls down, and the rest was history." Valvano also talks of his family which is almost always an emotional subject, relating to so many people. And a final thing Valvano says really hits home: "I just got one last thing; I urge all of you, all of you, to enjoy your life, the precious moments you have." If this isn't a significant use of pathos, I have no idea what is. This quote compels people to reflect on their lives in a emotional way, a perfect example of pathos. Overall, Valvano's whole speech is a good example of pathos because it is an incredibly emotional speech.

Three strategies are used in Jimmy Valvano's 1993 ESPY speech: ethos, pathos, and logos. The most-used form of rhetoric in this speech is pathos, and the least used is ethos. Ethos, with is the character appeal of the speaker, is used at the very beginning of the speech when Valvano's reminisces about his early basketball coaching days at Rutgers and tells a story about how he tried to inspire his players by emulating Vince Lombardi. He uses logos, an appeal to logic, when he lobbies for cancer research, citing statistics of how many people suffer from cancer and die from it compared to AIDS, which at the time got more attention and funding. Finally, he uses pathos throughout the entire speech, which is very emotional because Valvano was suffering from cancer at the time. He uses the speech to inspire the audience and tell them to live their lives to the fullest and laugh, and think, and cry everyday. He tells everyone to follow their dreams and uses that to help convince them to donate to cancer research, because he says his dream is a cure someday so their families don't suffer from the disease. This speech was very emotional and inspiring, because I have several family members (and a cat) who currently suffer from cancer, and I'm glad Valvano started his foundation because it has helped my family, and someday it might help me.

There are many different ways Jim Valvano used ethos, pathos, and logos throughout his speech. His use of pathos left everyone in tears and made you want to help him because his speech was very moving and emotional. He really got your attention when he spoke of spending however long he has left with his family. It made you realize that we should love our family and friends like it was our last day. He also made you laugh when he spoke of his first coach pep talk. Instead of saying their team name though, he said "your familyS religion, and the Green Bay Packers." Even as he was dying, he could make everyone laugh. Valvano also used ethos when he talked about how we should spend our days and what he believed in. He believed that a full day included laughter, thought, and tears. His usage of the power of threes can also be considered ethos. His entire speech used three ideas and it was very well structured for being impromptu. Finally, he used logos whenever he talked about receiving money for cancer research. He started out saying how the Arthur Ash Foundation was receiving large amounts of money for AIDS research, but not a lot was being collected for cancer. His usage of logos made you want to help him and everyone who has had to battle cancer because it was logical. Jim Valvano's speech may not have helped him conquer cancer, but it sure helped him conquer is dream of leaving his mark on the world.

on March 4, 1993, Jim Valvano was awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage Humanitarian Award at the first ever ESPY awards. The acceptance speech that he gave was one of the most inspirational and memorable speeches of all time. Jimmy Valvano was a famous college basketball coach, that was suffer from a disease called cancer. This disease would ultimately end his life. Although we remember him for his accomplishments as a coach, what is most memorable about jimmy Valvano was his outlook on life. His speech can be analyzed according to pathos, ethos, and logos.

The main way to interpret jimmy Valvano's speech is through pathos. His speech given at the ESPY awards was extremely touching and emotional. He speaks about how every day "we hug, we kiss, we love". Jimmy says that "To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. Number three is you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy." The way he describes his outlook on life directly appeals to our emotions.

Another way his speech can be interpreted, is by logos. Logos appeals to logic, and is a way of persuading an audience by reason. He speaks about how cancer can affect his physical body but not his mental jewels. Jimmy says that "Cancer can take away all my physical abilities. It cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart and it cannot touch my soul. And those three things are going to carry on forever." His strength mentally despite his physical disabilities is what directly appeals to logos.

A final way to interpret jimmy Valvano's speech is through ethos. Ethos is an appeal to ethics, and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility of the persuader. Throughout jimmys speech he consistently brings up one idea in particular. He says that "It’s so important to know where you are. I know where I am right now. How do you go from where you are to where you want to be." This show the character of jimmy Valvano. Jimmy also idealized Vince Lombardi, who was a famous football coach for the Green Bay packers. Jimmy himself was a incredible basketball coach that won a National Championship with North Carolina State University in 1983. Jimmys mindset and coaching history are what directly appeals to ethos.

Jimmy Valvano was awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award. He was fighting cancer while giving this speech and passed away two months after. In his speech, I think that he related mostly to ethos and pathos, but still relates to logos a little bit. Pathos is the most effective because people tend to really listen to things that relate to emotion. He even calls himself a "very emotional and passionate man." He uses the rules of three a lot in his speech. They are: "cancer can't touch my mind, heart, and soul", "family, religion, and Greenbay Packers", "hug, kiss, and love", "was, am, gonna be", and "laugh, cry, think." He talks about his family a lot, which related to ethos because it's personal. He talks about how important his daughters are and how his parents helped him be who was. I think that this speech can help anyone who's going through a rough patch in life. He gives key ideas to get through life, especially the "rules of three."

Jim Valvano's speech at the 1993 Espy's appealed to pathos, ethos, and logos all while carrying a message that many would never forget. Ethos is an appeal to someones moral values. In the first few paragraphs Jim Valvano builds up his own character by humbling himself saying that he is honored to be mentioned in the same breathe as Arthur Ashe and that he "certainly will treasure forever" the award that was presented to him. Pathos is an appeal to someone's emotions and in my opinion he uses this the most throughout the speech. He says things like "Don't give up, Don't ever give up." and that each day you should "laugh, you should laugh every day. Number two is think, and number three is you should have your emotions moved to tears". Yet, for all the inspirational things he says there is just are just as many stories that can make his audience laugh forever. In his speech he recalls one of the first times he gave a team a speech. After telling his audience that they should always remember where they came from he tells them his story about how he gave the same speech Lombardi gave, and when it was his time to shine he forgot to switch the name of his team, Rutgers, with the original team name of the Green Bay Packers. Jim Valvano was a loved coach and a great motivational speaker, and his speech at the Espy's will be remembered for years to come.

In his speech, Valvano uses pathos, ethos, and logos various time. He uses pathos by telling about his experience and his fight with his cancer and how he is staying positive even though he is suffering; "Cancer can take away all my physical abilities. It cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart and it cannot touch my soul. And those three things are going to carry on forever." He also uses ethos when he is being told to finish his speech from the flashing light but says he doesn't care; "That screen is flashing up there 30 seconds like I care about that screen right now, huh? I got tumors all over my body. I’m worried about some guy in the back going 30 seconds?" Finally, he uses logos when he announces that he is starting his new foundation and how all the donations will go to cancer research; "...We are starting The Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research...I’m going to work as hard as I can for cancer research and hopefully, maybe, we’ll have some cures and some breakthroughs." By using pathos, ethos, and logos, Valvano makes his words more relatable and helps convince the audience of his points that he makes throughout his speech

Jim Valvano gives a powerful speech at the ESPY Awards when speaking to the large crowd. He uses three elements in his speech, ethos, pathos, and logos. He has ethos when his credibility is discussed. Valvano is a well respected man, coach, and humanitarian. He is has star appeal because he was a strong sports figure until he was diagnosed with cancer. Pathos is present when he displays the emotions that come from fighting cancer. He moves the audience by conveying to them that if they are listening to him in person saying this speech, they know that he does not have a long time to live. Logos is used by infusing logic with the different points he talked about to be most effective. He did a great job using this aspect because it was only logical to finish the speech talking about the Jimmy V foundation. This foundation made the audience feel moved about Valvano's goals to help other cancer patients, maybe even save some lives or find cures. He did not care much about healing himself, but more on that he wanted to save others from grief and families from mourning. His motive and persistence for the fund was momentous and is still functioning strong today.

In 1993 Jimmy Valvano received the Arthur Ashe courage award. When he took to the stage, he gave a speech that many people adore. The speech became very emotional, when he talked about his family, former coaching jobs, and his struggle with cancer.
Although starting his speech with a joke many people in the audience didn't laugh, assumably because they didn't know what to expect, due to the severity of his ailment. He uses many different forms of rhetoric throughout his speech. He uses pathos to make the speech very emotional. he uses anecdotes to give us a firm understanding of what is important in his life in a light, facetious way. Towards the end of the speech Valvano uses logos via giving facts about his affliction to help get others to donate and make the disease easier to combat for others.
Valvano talks about his previous jobs as a college basketball coach because he feels it's "important to know where you are", know where you are now, and know "where you wanna be". These three section of the speech are rhetorical scheme known as the rule of threes. Valvano purposely does this to help us to understand and remember what he says. He dose multiple times throughout his speech.

Jim Valvano's speech at the ESPY's could be considered one of the most powerful speeches of this century. The reason you could make this argument, was because the speech appealed to the three major aspects, ethos, pathos, logos. Valvano's speech represents ethos, because of the powerful names he brings up during his speech. He talks about Mike Krzyzewki and Vince Lombardi, and both are big names in the world of sports. The fact that he brings up these people, shows that his words are credible. Pathos played a major role in Jim Valvano's speech. His speech was so amazing, that people would go from laughing to crying in a matter of seconds. The delivery of the speech was outstanding, and definitely moved people. The way he talked about his first coaching job at Rutgers, and the story he told about it, left the whole room laughing. Later on, when he was talking about his cancer and how it will not touch his mind, heart, and soul, left people with a tear. Finally, logos, the logical points of his speech. Valvano brought up the fact that there needs to be more research for finding a cure to cancer. Him saying this represents logos, because it is true. He was correct saying this, and when he said this, I'm sure it made a lot of people think. His speech represented all three forms, and that is why it was such an amazing speech.

The speech made by Jim Valvano at the 1993 ESPY's Awards for the acceptation of Arthur Ashe Courage Award has a little bit of ethos, pathos, and logos. Mr. Valvano's speech includes ethos because he tells a personal anecdote about his first speech to his Rutger's freshmen team in the locker room. He explains to the audience how important and legendary a locker room speech is. Jim Valvano's speech includes pathos because he talks about how terrible cancer is and how it kills over 500,000 people a year. He tells the audience that he doesn't have much time left and that he wants to spend whatever time he does have left with his family. Before he announced the Jimmy V fund, he explained to the crowd how important cancer research is so more lives can be saved. All of those personal, emotional statements are pathos. There is logos in this legendary speech because he continually uses the rule of three's. Throughout the speech Mr. Valvano talks about how we must laugh, think, and cry everyday. If we do that seven days a week, we will be living a full life. He also says we must think about where we have been, where we are, and where we are going. He uses the rule of three's throughout his speech and that is logos. Jim Valvano's speech left a lasting imprint on all of those people's lives at the Espy's that night and it will continue to do that for many more people in the future.

Jim Valvano knew that to appeal to his audience he had to combine all three literary terms. He blended them together so well that they seemed to flow together at times. A great example of logos was when he brought up the numbers and statistics of cancer and AIDS research. He was able to have a shock and awe effect by bringing up how little money there was for cancer reaearch, in comparison to something like AIDS. By confronting people the logic and sheer facts with the numbers he was able to get them to understand that this is a problem we have to focus on, and not just sit idly by hoping that something will come along. He used ethos very well by showing that he was human too, and that one moments of great importance and gravity, sometimes he got caught up in it and messed up, like in his first speech to his team for their first game. He showed that he yearned to be as great as coaches before him so he tried to copy them and he messed up and made it a laughable moment. And he showed great pathos when he started to talk about his family and how much they meant to him. And, that maybe he could not be saved by the research but maybe someone else could. Maybe someone with more kids that rely on them could be saved by the people donating to cancer research.

Jimmy Valvano's speech was one of the most emotional and inspiring speeches of all time. It was also one of the most well crafted speeches of all times using various amounts of devices, rhetorical tropes, schemes, and appealing messagage to the audience. He stays the speech with a joke: "That’s the lowest I’ve ever seen Dick Vitale since the owner of the Detroit Pistons called him in and told him he should go into broadcasting" trying to use pathos to "Break the Ice" with the audience. As he continues, he begins to tell the audience about who he is. Jimmy continues to use examples in sets of threes. I continue to see Jimmy invite the audience to laugh and indulge in his past experiences. As he tells funny stories about his first time coaching the viewer then hears the logos in his speech. His story sound very real and gives him credibility as a coach in that situation. Overall, I see emotional appeal to the audience. This was a very inspiring and emotional speech and that is continued throughout the whole thing.

In Jim Valvano speech at the ESPY's awards ceremony, he used many of Aristotle's methods of persuasion in his speech. In his speech there are examples of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. Jim Valvano says that there are three specific things that we should do every day of our lives such as "always laugh, spend sometime in thought, and your let your emotions move to tears." This quote is a prime example of Pathos. Jim persuaded his audience by appealing to their emotions by saying words like tears and laugh. In his speech, Jim seems very worried about the problem of cancer and says that "500,000 people will die this year of cancer." Jim used the method of persuasion logos by stating a statics that 500,000 people will die of cancer in his speech to really warn people that cancer is a serious problem. Jim made sure that everyone knew what he is going through by saying that "Now I’m fighting cancer." In what he said, he used the method of persuasion Ethos. He established his credibility on the matter of cancer being a serious disease by saying he is experiencing the problem first hand. Listening to Jim Valvano's speech made me extremely emotion and it was well spoken

Jim Valvanos speech was very emotional and used many different rhetorical schemes. He uses pathos when he tells the story about one of his first coaching jobs and how he messed up a story he told his players. This made the crowd laid back and interested in what he was talking about. Another way he used pathos was by telling the crowd how to have a complete day. A complete day involves laughing thinking and crying. This connected him to the crowd emotionally. He used ethos by making everything he said very passionate. This showed he was very much into what he was doing, and that he had a good character and was committed to what he believes. He also used pathos by using big names like Dick Vitale, and Coach K. He represents logos by saying that they need more research for cancer and that we need a cure.
I believe Pathos is the most effective rhetorical scheme because it helps make connections with the people you are trying to communicate with.

Jimmy Volvano used ethos in many ways. One way is talking about the three things you should do everyday. He says that you should laugh, think, and cry everyday and if you do that, then you would have had a full day. Another way is telling the story about his first job. He tells it in a comedic way. He is able to laugh at himself. After that he speaks of his cancer and announces his foundation. He thanks ESPN for supporting him and his cancer research foundation. Volvano does not use pathos in as many ways. He talks about his cancer and how the disease will take his physical body but not any other part of him. He uses logos by saying that he followed Vince Lombardi in telling the team he was coaching to focus on their religions. He also ends his speech by saying "I thank you and God bless you all." Volvano obviously values religion. I liked this speech because, while it was very emotional, it was also humorous, which I can appreciate. I thought it was very true what he said about laughing, thinking, and crying everyday. I try to at least laugh everyday and I tend to cry very often. I have never really heard of Jimmy Volvano before I heard this speech but after hearing it, I would like to know more about him.

In Jimmy Valvano's speech there were many different types of rhetoric. One of the three main types of these were ethos. One time this was used was when Mr. Valvano said that he was fighting cancer. This would have done a lot to make the crowd to like and fell bad for him. Also there was his story about how in his first year of coaching he messed up his speech. This is a little story that while being funny also made the crowd enjoy his presence. Another type of rhetoric is involved with the last topic. That type is pathos, the type of rejector if that involves emotional or religious beliefs. This goes along with the messing up the speech was that he went off on a tangent talking about the religious stories and his family life. Then after him talking about basketball coaching he goes into his family life and talked about how he loves his family. This shows how he loves his family more than anything, but along with expressing these feelings he uses every type of rhetoric there is. Those are just some of the many examples of ethos, pathos, and logos in Jimmy Valvano's speech.

Jimmy Valvano's speech is very inspirational and known by many. There are also many types of rhetoric schemes like pathos, ethos, and logos. After he is announced and makes his way to the podium, everyone in the audience was cheering and applauding him. This is an example of ethos. The audience cheered and raised to their feet to pay their respect and show their admiration for him. The entire speech shows a lot of ethos because Valvano is well-known and shows an outstanding speaking ability. The speech also showed many signs of pathos. He expressed his heart and he really spoke for what he believed in and touched many people through the power of his words. He made it clear that he was very thankful by talking about his life, family and friends, and his coaching career. Logos, or an appeal to logic, is shown when Jimmy when he goes on to say, "But if I told you it’s ten times the amount that goes in for cancer research. I also told you that 500,000 people will die this year of cancer." Valvano uses real numbers to put into perspective the reality of his speech. He used logic and actual knowledge to open the eyes of the people listening to his speech. Many people today still refer to this speech and see Jimmy Valvano as an iconic character

Jimmy Valvano’s Acceptance Speech of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 1993 ESPN ESPY Awards was full of emotion. The speech contained examples of ethos, the appeal of character, pathos, the appeal of emotion, and logos, the appeal of logic. Valvano begins his speech with ethos when he jokes about his lack of cue cards and how his speech will be the longest one of the night. He used pathos when he began speaking to the audience about his journey with cancer. He admits that he is an emotional man and his words begin to inspire those in the crowd when he talks about how he gets through life every day. He says, " If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day." He also speaks about the three things in his life that are important: "Where you started; where you are; and where you're gonna be." Valvano uses pathos again as he talks about his very first coaching job. Valvano was determined to be a coach as great as Vince Lombardi. When he admits he told his players that "we'll be successful this year if you can focus on three things, and three things only: Your family, your religion, and the Green Bay Packers." Valvano continues his use of pathos as he speaks about the importance of family. He ends his speech using the rhetoric technique of logos. He talks about the hundreds of thousands of people who are dying from cancer every year and how little money is being used for cancer research. Pathos was the most used technique in this speech, as Valvano spoke about his battle with cancer, the audience could not help to be hit with emotion and sympathy. Jimmy Valvano ended his speech with the famous words "Cancer can take away all my physical ability. It cannot touch my mind; it cannot touch my heart; and it cannot touch my soul. "

Jim Vavlano was an amazing, strong man. After listening to his speech for the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award at the 1983 Espy Awards I feel inspired to be as strong as him. There are several examples of pathos, ethos, and logos in bus speech. A good amount of his speech could be categorized as pathos. For example he mentions how important his family is to him. He also talks about his experiences with his team and about how he cared about him. When pathos is used it makes the audience feel emotion through the words that he is saying. He uses ethos when he quotes the coach of the Green Bay Packers. He knows that the speech that he will say will encourage his players to win even thought the delivery of the speech didn't go as he planned it to. He uses comedy in his speech to show that it wasn't a serious moment with his team. He uses logos when he talks about having cancer. He knows that he isn't doing well but he convinced the crowd that he will live the rest of his life just the same. He proves his strong he was when he says, "It cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart and it cannot touch my soul. And those three things are going to carry on forever." The speech that he gave was amazing and inspires people everyday.

Jim Valvano's speech was truly inspirational, no matter if you were a sports fan or not. Jim Valvano died of metastatic cancer at the age of 47, but lived a prosperous and amazing life. He started off as a freshmen coach at Rutgers University and eventually worked his way up to NC State University, where he would lead them to a championship. He gave his iconic speech at the 1993 ESPYs, where he won the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. Valvano spoke from the heart, without using notes or a script. He had stories to tell, jokes to say, as well as emotions to express. He would often use the rule of three. Once such example is, "It cannot touch my mind, it can not touch my heart, and it cannot touch my soul." He also used vivid examples of ethos, pathos, and logos. An example of ethos is the fact that he is a well respected coach and man, and appeals as a sports figure. Valvano also used logos in his three step approach to things. In his speech he says, "Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. Number three is you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think and you cry, that’s a full day." This is just a beautiful logical approach to live an amazing life. The last thing is pathos. Valvano tried to mask his pain with cancer, but he lets his emotions flow in his speech, to a point where he is signaled for time. He goes on to say in his speech, "That screen is flashing up there 30 seconds like I care about that screen right now, huh? I got tumors all over my body. I’m worried about some guy in the back going 30 seconds? You got a lot, hey va fa napoli, buddy. You got a lot." This just shows the passion and emotion of his speech and the pathos he uses. Jim Valvano's speech is truly amazing, in both the meaning and rhetorical schemes.

At the 1993 ESPY award, Jim Valvano won the inaugural Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award. During this time he was battling against cancer. In his speech, he uses many rhetorical schemes to make it more emotional and moving for the audience that was listening to him. He was a great speaker and when he spoke people hung on to every word that he was saying. He used many rhetorical schemes in his speech which included pathos, ethos and logos. Pathos involves affecting someone's emotions. He touched the hearts of everybody when he talked about his battle against cancer and that he didn't know how much time he had left to live. When you are using ethos, you are trying to perform a persuasive argument to convince the listener that you are right. Jimmy did this when he told the audience the best ways on how to live and reflect on their lives. He said that the best way to live your life is to "Laugh, Think, and Cry." He also uses logos in his speech which is used through logical reasoning. He states that he clearly doesn't have much time left, and that cancer kills thousands of people a year, yet nobody is doing anything about it. Throughout his speech he talks about his family, being a basketball coach, fond memories, and his experience battling with cancer. Jim Valvano was an excellent speaker, and a truly great man all around.

Jimmy Valvano appealed to his audience in the three ways of advertising, through pathos, logos, and ethos. He acts on our emotions by making us both laugh and cry. In pathos, Valvano confesses to us that he, "doesn't know how much time he has left" which is upsetting news to hear from anyone. Shortly after he makes us laugh with his, not so perfect, speech mistake. At one time when he is talking about his disease he tells us we need to spend each day great and never waste a moment. Using pathos Jimmy Valvano made us shed more than a just a few tears. The second method he used in his speech was ethos. He starts by telling us that he is coming from his own words and not queue cards, to make himself credible. He also told us about his "true story" about his speech to his basketball team at Rudder University. Logos was also used in his speech. He tells us how AIDS recieves 10 times as many donations than cancer. Jimmy Valvano also says that 1 in 4 people that die from cancer will have the very disease as he does. Through logic and reason Jimmy gets us to donate to his cause by announcing the start of his foundation for donations to cancer research. In my opinion, pathos is by far the most effective way to appeal to an audience.. By making them laugh, and even cry, the speaker shows his sincerity and truly makes you feel for them. After crying at this speech even I wanted to contribute to his cause over a decade later. This speech was genuinely a great one.

Jim Valvano gave a speak in 1993 after winning the Aurther Ash Courage Award that made a great affect on people many years to come. In this speak, even though it was not rehearsed, he used three different rhetorical schemes. Jim started off his speak using ethos, building up ones credibility, when he started off with a funny story. Jim included logos when he was talking about ESPN and their donations to his organization. He explained the actual facts behind the horrible disease. Lastly, he demonstrated oath is when he says that donating might not save his life but will help with research that could possibly save our children or grandchildren so lives. He used to rule of threes to leave an impact in his speak. This was a very emotional speak that moved many people and made them look at life the way Jim did. Years later and people are still talking about the speech because of the powerful rhetoric and message used by Jim. I know this speak made me enjoy everyday a little more because you never know what day is your last.

The speech given by Jimmy Valvano was absolutely touching and amazing in my opinion. Not only was the speech great, but the way that Valvano puts his own twist on it made it that much better. Jimmy Valvano is easily the most confident and emotional speaker that I know of. He used the three methods of persuasion, ethos, pathos, and logos, perfectly throughout his speech. An example of ethos was when Jimmy was talking about his self and listing his accomplishments. He increased his credibility by stating that he was the coach of the Rutgers Basketball team, the North Carolina State Wolfpack Basketball team, and just started the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research. This lets the audience know why he received such an award. The next method he used was pathos. I believe that he used pathos the most throughout his storytelling. He made an appeal to the audience's emotion when he was talking about his first pre-game speech and how he said the same thing as the great Vince Lombardi. Jimmy made the audience laugh hysterically many times in this story. Finally, Valvano used logos when giving the statistics of cancer that we occurring in modern society. He said, "But if I told you that 500,000 people will die this year from cancer", and, "one in every four will be afflicted with this disease". Jimmy Valvano was a loving, caring, and generous man. Not to mention a legendary public speaker and coach. He truly changed the world with his words of wisdom.

Jimmy Valvano gave one of the most memorable speeches at the 1993 ESPY awards. In the speech Jimmy said we should laugh, think, and cry everyday and I think everyone did this during his speech too. His inspiring speech used examples of ethos, pathos, and logos. The speech mainly revolves around pathos but uses the other methods of persuasion as well. He first opens up the speech with a joke which appeals to ethos. Ethos is the speaker's character appeal. Jimmy showed ethos again when he told a story from his first job when he said Green Bay Packers instead of Rutgers. While the whole speech is centered on pathos because of Jimmy having cancer there are other examples given. Pathos is emotional appeal. Then he appeals to pathos when he talked about his family and what is important in life. Jimmy says "Don't give up, don't ever give up" at the end of his speech which also show an example of pathos. Logos means logical appeal or persuasion. Jimmy appeals to logos when he ends the speech talking about the Jimmy V foundation and how it could save so many people's lives.

At the 1993 ESPY awards Jim Valvano won the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award. His moving speech has many examples of ethos, pathos ,and logos. He starts his speech with ethos. Ethos is used in a speech to connect with the crowd or to build up yourself. He starts the speech with a joke: "That’s the lowest I’ve ever seen Dick Vitale since the owner of the Detroit Pistons called him in and told him he should go into broadcasting." This joke does not get the exact response he was hoping for. Throughout the speech he tries to make joke to lighten up the very somber mood. The speech contains mainly pathos. Pathos has to do a lot with emotion of the crowd. He uses this emotion when he references his cancer he is battling: "Time is very precious to me. I don’t know how much I have left, and I have some things that I would like to say." This shows how when you realize the limited amount of time you have on this earth, how much you value it or should value it. The rhetoric least used is logos. Logos isn't used very much because this speech is meant to be more personal than logical.

Jim Valvano uses many rhetoric devices, such as pathos, ethos, and logos, in his speech in order to make it more gripping. Pathos is a rhetoric scheme where the speaker tries to appeal to the audience's emotions, particularly those of sadness and pity. Jim Valvano uses the scheme pathos when talks about his cancer, how he doesn't know how long he will live, and when he tells the audience to go enjoy every moment of their lives. Ethos is the scheme where the speaker appeals to the audience. Jim Valvano uses ethos when he asks for the audience's help and donations to cancer research. He is trying to make the audience relate him and how he is now to any of their other relatives who might be suffering from cancer now. The rhetoric scheme, logos, is the appeal to logic and reason. He uses logos to ask the audience to think about why cancer research has such significantly less funding than AIDS research, and to possibly convince them to change it. Personally, I think that pathos is most effective when trying to make a point in a speech. While logos is fairly effective, and ethos less so, nothing more strongly drives a person to do something than their own emotions.

The best parts of the speech are the multiple groups of three that Valvano talks about. One reason is that since they are in groups of three, they are easier to remember and make more of an impact. The other reasons are more specific. Valvano says in his speech that there are three things that you should do every day: laugh, think, and cry. This is an important part of the speech because it’s good advice. Another group of three that he mentions is three things to remember: where you started, where you are, and where you’re going to be. This is an important part of the speech because it is a good use of logos. Sometimes people forget to remember these things, so helping them remember it is a good way to make an impact in the world. Valvano uses logos in his other group of three, which is the three things that cancer cannot take from him: his mind, his heart, and his soul. Although this is a good use of logos, it is also a good use of pathos, which makes it very important to the speech because it is inspirational and very well put together. Over all, the speech was very moving because of the important groups of three that Valvano uses.

This speech by Jimmy Valvano is a great representation of Art in the form of simple words. This speech includes the rhetorical scheme ethos, pathos and logos, all throughout it in different ways to keep appeal to the different audiences. Pathos, the rhetorical scheme that appeals to one's emotion, is a very big theme in his speech. Valvano talks about his battle with cancer and how hard it is for him. Ethos, the rhetorical scheme of appealing to one's basic ethics or social viewing on a particular topic, is used when Valvano speaks directly to those who have been effected by cancer. And lastly Logos, the rhetorical scheme in which you appeal to one's logical side. Valvano compares AIDS to cancer in part of his speech. He says, "the amount of money pouring in for AIDS is not enough, but is significant. But if I told you it’s ten times the amount that goes in for cancer research. I also told you that 500,000 people will die this year of cancer. I also tell you that one in every four will be afflicted with this disease, and yet somehow, we seem to have put it in a little bit of the background. I want to bring it back on the front table." By bringing in statics, he appeals to the logical side. If cancer is a huge problem than people will begin to donate money to cancer. Of all of these important rhetorical schemes I believe that Pathos is the most powerful and influential one. While showing statistics to people and targeting a specific group can work well, the natural human is driven by there emotion. When upset and confused, people do reckless things. When happy and joyful people will continue to be happy as long as allowed. People can very easily look over facts in a case where there emotions influence them, making Pathos the best rhetorical scheme.

Jimmy V's speech relates to all ethos, pathos, and logos. It relates to ethos when he tells the story of his first coaching job at Rutgers when he messes up on the pre game speech which he practiced over and over. Jimmy V's speech relates to pathos, the appeal of emotion, when he starts to talk about cancer and the foundation he is starting to raise money for cancer research, so everyone can have the life they imagined. Jimmy V's speech appeals to logos, the appeal to reason, when he uses one of the rules of three. He says everyday a person should laugh, think and cry, and they will be living their lives to the fullest. Jimmy V's speech was very moving and I think made people realize that life is short, live it to the fullest. Personally, this speech meant a lot to me after losing a very close friend of mine, Rachel, to cancer a few years ago. Jimmy V was a great public speaker and knew how to draw a crowd in and keep their attention with the use of his rhetoric devices.

The Jimmy Valvano speech uses many types of literary devices like pathos, logos, and ethos. He uses pathos the most in the speech because he is giving a highly emotional speech and this allows him to connect better with his audience. In the first part of his speech he tells a funny story about his first coaching job with Rutgers and says how he messed up his first coaches pep talk. He used this tactic to get the listeners interested in the speech by using pathos and appealing to the emotions of the listener. He uses pathos many more times throughout the speech when he is talking about his family and about his cancer. Other then using devices like pathos ethos and logos, he also used the rule of threes. This is easier for the listener to remember what he said, for example he said "cancer can't touch my mind, it can't touch my heart, and it can't touch my soul!" This is easy for the listener to remember what he says because 2 words is to little, and 4 words are to many. The end of his speech is an appeal to ethos and logos. When he says the amount of money donated to AIDS is 10 times as much as to cancer research. That is an appeal to both logos and ethos because Jimmy V is trying to persuade people to help fight cancer and show them the facts about the terrible disease. Jimmy Valvano's speech was made better because he used these types of literary devices to get the audience interested and it made the reader take something ways from it.

In Jimmy V's speech he uses a different strategies to get his point across, pathos, logos, and ethos.

Pathos is emotional appeal, and I think Jimmy uses this the most if he means to or not. He talks about how even though he is fighting cancer he is still the same, he is very emotional and passionate. He even brings up his parents and how they are the reason he is those things. Jimmy talks about his three steps of life: to laugh, think, and cry. He talks highly of many people during his speech also. Even brings up the story of when he coached the Freshman basketball team for Rutgers and the big but funny fiasco that happened when he tried to be like Vince Lombardi, the coach for the Green Bay Packers. He brings up how he firmly believes in knowing where you are and where youre going and to enjoy your life. Finally he ends with "Cancer can take away all my physical abilities. It cannot change my mind, it cannot touch my heart and it cannot touch my soul. Those are three things that will carry on forever."

For logos or logic I feel like there isnt as much as there was pathos but nonetheless, he talks about how the AIDs funding coming in is ten times the amount for cancer. 500,000 people will die that year from cancer he states. 1 in 4 people will be afflicted with the disease too. "We need your help. I need your help." "it might not save my life. It may save my childrens lives. It may save someone you love." He then goes on to talk about his foundation he has made to kick start this campaign for cancer research that is still a big help today.

Finally ethos, he starts off with how he isnt using cue cards and that this is just him and he doesnt care how much he goes over. Time is very precious to him. "I dont know how much i have left" "Hopefully at the end, i will have said something that will be important to other people too." Just like how his three steps of life had pathos in them i also think they have ethos too, showing people a way to have a healthy balanced life. He urges everyone to live their lives.

Even though he used all three in his speech, to me the most effective was the pathos he used. It stirred something in me and inspired me a lot. It made my emotions sad then happy and many others. When he was speaking about those parts I felt myself the most intrigued about hearing his stories etc.

In the speech Jim Valvano uses his his weakness to his advantage. He does this by showing pathos. He talks about his fight against cancer. He said "Now I'm fighting cancer, everybody knows that." And also says "don't give up... Don't ever give up. I feel this will make people feel for him helping them support his cause and speech. He then uses logos to show that his cause isn't as supported as it should be. He says "the amount of money pouring into AIDS is not enough, but is significant. But if I told you it's ten times the amount that goes into cancer research." He later states that around half a million people will die from cancer. From my knowledge I know not that many people die from AIDS a year. Jim I would think is hurt by this, which is why he shows so much passion for his cause to stop the disease that effects him everyday. Jim uses ethos by talking about his coaching experiences which would start to appeal more to sports fans. Along with that he mentioned about a book written by Vince Lombardi and how it impacted him. This would increase the appeal to sports fans.

Jim Valvano's speech at the 1993 ESPY, where he won the inaugural Author Ashe Courage and Humanitarian award, was very powerful and emotional. In his speech he used three major rhetorical schemes that we have been taking about. These include: pathos, ethos, and logos. Pathos is a feeling or argument that evokes sadness or pity towards a certain matter or subject. He uses pathos when telling everyone about his battle to fight cancer. At this point in the speech everyone is listening and completely engaged in what he is saying. Even though I personally think he displays mostly pathos, he also uses ethos and logos. Ethos is more an argument about character or authority. Jim uses ethos in the beginning of the speech when he walks up and everyone applauds him. He also uses ethos in talking about his career as a coach and when he tells the story about how he tried to do what Lombardi did in the book a Commitment to Excellence because he was trying to show his character. Logos is based on logic, statistics, and real facts. He uses logos when talking about AIDS and the death rate from cancer. Logos is also used when he tells everyone that we should laugh, think, and cry everyday. This speech was very moving and could show each of these three rhetorical schemes, pathos, ethos, and logos, really well.

In Jimmy Valvano's ESPY speech, he used many different rhetorical schemes to pull his listeners in and made them feel a connection with it as he talked. To begin his speech he used Ethos to appeal to someone's personality or character. When he was talking about his family, he made a reference to his mother and father and also used the three step rule. Jimmy Valvano said he can't help being an emotion speaker because his parents brought him up that way. He uses pathos when he starts talking about his battle with cancer. He says over and over that his time is limited and means him a lot. This draws the audience in and makes them think about his situation and how sometime soon in the future he won't be here to give any sort of speech. In the last minutes of his speech he dedicates to to use the scheme logos. Logos is an appeal to logic. He says that he knows the AIDS's foundation receive a lot of attention and he would like to make everyone look at the cancer foundations. He said if the cancer foundations were as popular as the AIDS, we could put an end to the horrible disease. He also announces the beginning of his new foundation that will help cancer patients decades into the future. Jimmy Valvano's speech is one of the most memorable speeches of all time and is an perfect example of the rhetorical schemes logos, ethos, and pathos.

You probably know Jimmy Valvano as a great basketball coach an inspirational man with cancer. However you probably don't know he's one to use Ethos, Pathos, and Logos in his writing and speech. He was given the Arthur Ashe courage award a couple of months before his death, and when getting this award he had a given one of the more known speeches of modern time. Throughout his whole speech he used multiple examples of ethos, pathos, and logos. An example is when Jimmy says , "That’s the lowest I’ve ever seen Dick Vitale since the owner of the Detroit Pistons called him in and told him he should go into broadcasting." He is using pathos to make a joke and soften the crowd before he began his speech.

Ethos, pathos, and logos are very different. Ethos is used to access credibility, pathos pulls on someone's emotion, and logos uses logic to make a point to someone. I feel as though each ethos, pathos, and logos has their own amount of power when it comes to convincing someone. However overall the most effective I believe is pathos because people's emotions go a long ways, and if something pulls on them then they most likely will be convinced.

In literature there are three modes of persuasion ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is an appeal to ethics, and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility of the persuader. Pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response. Logos is an appeal to logic, and is a way of persuading an audience by reason. In Jimmy Valvano's 1993 acceptance speech for the ESPY's Arthur Ashe Courage Award he used all three of these modes of persuasion. He uses logos by informing people about cancer and AIDS. AIDS was a big problem in the 90's and a lot of people were donating money towards finding a cure. People were donating so much money to AIDS research that people were forgetting about cancer research reminds and informs them about cancer by saying, "What I would like to be able to do is spend whatever time I have left and to give, and maybe, some hope to others. Arthur Ashe Foundation is a wonderful thing, and AIDS, the amount of money pouring in for AIDS is not enough, but is significant. But if I told you it’s ten times the amount that goes in for cancer research. I also told you that 500,000 people will die this year of cancer. I also tell you that one in every four will be afflicted with this disease, and yet somehow, we seem to have put it in a little bit of the background. I want to bring it back on the front table." By saying this i think that Jimmy also uses ethos. Him saying that people should not only donate the disease that has afflicted him, but also another disease shows how much character he truly has. It shows he's a very caring man and wants to help people in the future so they don't have to suffer and go through the things that he's going through. I think the most effective one he used of the three was pathos. Him talking about his cancer, saying he's going to die definitely appealed to people's emotions in a strong way. What was really special about this speech was he was so positive throughout the whole thing, even though he was in so much pain. He didn't let his cancer bring him down, I think that's what was so special about him.

He speech contains Ethos because he is a very well respected man. He is a coach and a well respected sports figure. The audience was filled with people who knew him personally so he already had a lot of credibility and an overall personal relationship with the audience. His speech also heavily uses Pathos. During the time of his speech, he didn’t have much of his life left due to an ongoing battle with bone cancer. The idea that most everyone who heard the speech live knew he was going to die soon was very emotional. His speech was very personal since he drew from personal experiences. And his speech contains Logos. In his speech he repeatedly gives logical steps to life in this "rule of threes." Jimmy V. said "The 3 things we should do every day: laugh, think, cry" "3 things we should think about every day: where You Started, where You Are, where You’re Going To Be"
