Senior Lab Day: October 5 Spirit Day (post before the end of class)

Making the Ordinary, Extraordinary

What makes John Updike a successful 20th century author is his ability to "make the ordinary, extraordinary." He takes ordinary characters and places them in ordinary situations but still manages to create interesting, if not "extraordinary" fiction.
Draw upon your experiences at your job OR your school to answer any ONE of the following lettered prompts before the end of class. Don't worry about writing style too much with this assignment--just write freely. This is NOT a journal, but a class assignment.

Answer any one (1) of the questions from Part A or Part B.Complete before the end of class.

Part A (for those of you who have worked a job)

Answer any ONE of these in a few (6-10) sentences. Answer a question that might have a somewhat "interesting" answer that could be woven into a short story.

a. When you aren't busy, what do you do at work to pass the time?

b. Tell me about a situation that occurred to you at work that might be woven into a short story.

c. How you ever had to do something at work (in a position of authority) that you didn’t want to do? Did you do it? Why or why not? Did you learn anything from the experience?

d. Have you ever quit a job? Been fired? Tell me about it.

e. Tell me about one of your co-workers or boss. Describe him or her in an interesting way. Is there some some line or phrase that he or she says that is interesting, clever, funny, etc.

f. Describe your customers, clientele, etc. in an interesting way. Do you have nicknames for any of them? Do you recognize certain "types" of customers?

Part B (observing St. Mark's High School)

Answer any ONE of these in a few (6-10) sentences. Answer a question that might have a somewhat "interesting" answer that could be woven into a short story.

a.Tell me about a real-life person at St. Mark’s who would make an interesting fictional character for a story or novel. Explain why (description, what he does, what he says, what others think about him, etc.). Do not be critical or mean in your choice or your explanation.

b.Tell me about a situation or scene or event that has happened at St.Mark’s that could be the basis for a story. Do not be critical or mean in your choice or your explanation.

c.Tell me about a place (setting) at St. Mark's that for some reason, would be a natural but also interesting setting for a story. For instance, the Spirit Day Pep Rally.

d.Describe some particular group of St. Mark's people in an interesting way---your lunch table, your theology class, the science department, etc. Do not be critical or mean in your choice or your explanation.

A scene from St. Mark's that would make a good story is the day that everyone tried to protest the budget cut and termination of Mr. Odgen. Mr. Odgen was a beloved coach and counselor at our school. The new budget cuts resulting in him being let go. Students planned one day to run to the football field after first period to show that we care about him and did not want him to leave. When news got out on social media sites, the outcome of what happened next was not in favor of the students.

I have a story about getting fired and quitting a job. I worked at Walgreens two summers ago as a cashier. I honestly don't know if I quit or got fired. I went in to talk to my boss about quitting because it was too hard to work during the school year. When I went to talk to him I found out that I didn't show up to work one day. I didn't know I was scheduled to work and he told me that I was fired and he took me off of the schedule. I wasn't sure how to feel about the whole situation. In the end I was kind of relieved to not have a job during the school year but I miss making money.

I work as a hostess at a restaurant in Lantana Square. We have a lot of older clients who come in several times a week. It's a fancy, expensive place so everyone dresses nicely, and it is expected to be clean and perfect at all times. So on some week nights or during lunch we might get like 10 tables at the most. Standing up there staring at the door drives me crazy. I prefer to work on weekends, when there's an hour wait and a million people every where. It makes the time go by fast. But on boring days, I clean. And I mean everything. I windex every single menu in the whole place; lunch, dinner, and dessert. I clean off the whole hostess stand by wiping down the phone, and re-organizing everything. Then, I windex all of the class doors so they are free of finger prints. Then I wipe down all of the wooden window sills so they don't look so dusty. I also clean the empty closet, by vacuuming the never stepped on carpet and wiping down the rarely used shelves. When everything is clean, I resort to rolling silverware in the cloth napkins. By the time all of these things are done, between answering the phone and seating people, it's usually about time to go home.

I work at a restaurant. I always work on school nights so its never really busy. At most theres about 20-30 people that come in to eat when I'm working, so it's safe to say I get really bored easily. To pass the time at work when it's not busy I read my book or do my homework. My boss doesn't allow us to have any books at the hostess desk so I actually have to hide it. He has caught me a few times and has yelled at me. I never thought I would actually get yelled at for doing homework....

Part B; c) An interesting place in St.Mark's that would make a good scene in a movie would be a cafeteria. The reason why i think this is because there are so many interesting things going on. If you just stepped back an observed the cafe, you would see all the interesting thing that each table talks about. We all have our own way of talking and hand language that if you didn't know what was going on, you would be lost. I don't think we have a "typical" cafeteria like in some movies because we are all blended together. We don't have a popular table or the "in crowd", we all just have our group of friends. That's why i think our cafe would make a great movie scene because we are so different from what has been pictured before. We have an interesting community atmosphere.

Even when im at work there are times when there is nothing to do. There are not many days that we are slow but when we are we are still not allowed to stand around and do nothing. When there is nothing to do at work I usually roll silver wear until there is something to do. I work at a high end resturant so there really isnt much time to just sit around and goof off. There is always food to be ran or tables to be cleaned. Along with doing silver wear I sometimes help the hostees stand, or I sweep the fish market, which is wear the bar is. My manager usually tells me what to do when it is busy and other than those two that i listed, I clean the managers office upstairs and just do stuff productive because my manager does not let us just stand around and goof off.

A very interesting group of people that I deal with everyday is my lunch table. My sophomore and junior lunch tables both were small because most of my class did not have lunch at the same time. This year we were able to get all of our friends together. A lot of people in the room may think we are the most obnoxious group. The lunch ladies probably think we are the fattest group because of our multiple trips up to the lines, but I love my lunch table. There is not a seat in the whole table, where I could sit and not laugh. The best part is that my closest friends are all at the same table and I am able to talk to them every single day, even if we do not have the same classes.

Part A. a) From freshman year to the start of senior year I worked at Brandywine Hundred Library off of Foulk Road. I worked to shelf books and checked to make sure that they were in the correct order on the shelves. I usually worked on the weekends all day. I had a very easy task and since there were about five of us, it made our job a lot simpler. There was a break room where we could make food or sit down and have our breaks. That is usually where i spent my free time, the time in between shelving and scanning the shelves. But mainly when i had free time, i would sit on the floor in the back stacks and read books. You would be very surprised at the types of books that they have in that library. I read this one book about this guy's life, but it contained randomly stories or stealing a horse with his cousin, or skipping class to go to a circus. Though the topics of the books were peculiar, it nonetheless passed the time quickly.

The summer after 6th grade i worked at an ice cream shop called "Dreamsicles." I worked by myself every Wednesday for the whole day. I didn't get many customers cause everyone is usually on the beach. My job was to fill up all of the toppings and supplies to prepare for a busy night of work. Since I had hours of time to pass I usually would taste all of the ice cream flavors. My favorite was cake and ice cream. I would also watch television in the back and attempt to read my summer reading but that never happened. I would get a couple customers but other than that I was on my own. I enjoyed it because I got paid for doing nothing. It was great!

An interesting event that happened in St. Marks history that would make a good basis for a story would be the time that the juniors won against the seniors. How the juniors won against the seniors time after time throughout the year. How after over a decade or just about the juniors won against the almost always winning seniors. It could go on to the next year and preparing to win again as seniors. It would make a good fictional story because you could twist it to be two different villages or such that are always at war and one always loses while the other always wins. Or it could be turned into a totally science fiction story with aliens and humans or aliens and aliens fighting each other. When suddenly the loosing side advances and starts to win.

part A a) Whenever I get bored at work I always end up drawing cakes all over my papers. Or I sometimes draw random swirls, lines, and squiggles. I like to try and see if there are any drawings or pictures within the random mess of lines. If there isn't time to draw I play fruit ninja on the ipad. Either way I am usually able to find a way to pass my time.

I work at a local golf course called Deerfield, some of you may have heard of it. I work for a man named Kurt who is probably the biggest goober I have ever met. He thinks he’s funny and constitly tells stupid jokes. For example, I was in the pro shop and Kurt was setting up manikins, he proceeded to take one of the arms of the manikin and say “need a hand?” Another nerdy thing Kurt does is put his fist out for you to tap it with your fist and says the stupidest phrase… “Knuckle-five.” His cheeks also get beet red when he’s embarrasses. I’m also convinced that Kurt cannot grow facial hair do to the fact that I have never seen one little hair of stubble on his face. Overall, working for Kurt isn’t too bad, he’s just 40-year-old nerd.

The summer of 2011 my sister was working at Soffrittos Italian grill on Kirkwood highway and told me that I should get a job there. I thought it was good idea because I needed a job, and since I wasn’t playing a fall sport it would be perfect. Or so I thought. I went in for an interview and was told I got the job. I started working about a week or two before school started. At first it was really stressful because I had no idea what I was doing. I got the hang out of it after a while but there was still so much to do. I would go to work around four o’clock and depending on the day of the week, I could work anywhere from four to ten or sometimes I wouldn’t leave until eleven. As a hostess you are on your feet the whole night so I would come home really tired. If I worked on a school night sometimes I wouldn’t have time to do my homework. About a month into I realized that it was becoming too much for me. First, I cut back how many days of the week I was working. Shortly after that, I talked to the manager and ended up quitting because I was beginning to do poorly in my classes. Quitting my job was the best idea I’ve ever had. I barely had any stress after that and now I don’t have to sacrifice time with my friends to go to school. Eventually I’ll get a job, but not yet.

Part A: Prompt C

During the summer months, I work at Skyline Swim Club. I work four-hour shifts in either the front office or the snack shack. Each one is a fairly easy job. However, working in the office during parties tends to be a bit more stressful. I am in charge of signing people in, collecting guest fees, and making announcements. This summer, during the annual adult party, I was in charge of making sure no adult would drive home drunk. My boss told me that even if I didn’t know them, I was supposed to take their keys if they were inebriated. Luckily, no partiers left completely trashed, so I was not required to complete the task. Thank god, because I probably would have chickened out. Awkward.

I work at Buffalo Wild Wings. When I'm bored or have free time at work,I goof around with my work friends. Sometimes we call to the front desk and place ridiculous or random orders to aggravate whoever is cashier. Some times we try all of the wing sauces. The hottest sauce is called "blazin" sauce. We attempt to eat as much of the sauce as we can on a tortilla chip with out taking a drink. The sauce is hot enough to melt rust off of a penny, so this is not an easy challenge. Sometimes if its late before we close we will eat the lemons used for iced tea and soft drinks. I'm better at that challenge that the "blazin" sauce challenge for sure. I work with funny people and it keeps my day interesting.

I work at a furniture moving company during the summer. The companies name is AOI. The guys I work with are all younger guys, mostly from Wilmington. There is always a lot of free time when traveling to different jobs and while working. There is always a minimum of 4 guys per job. To pass the time a lot of guys will sing/ rap to each other. I never sing or rap because I cant do neither but it is always interesting to hear. They can sing or rap about anything. There’s a guy there that only sings gospel music, another that raps, and everyone else is in-between. This time is usually my favorite, and most interesting part of my job.

An interesting club would be the glorious club of anime, full of friendship, and happy faces at every turn. Every Friday morning, at 7:30, we meet and we wait for our moderator to show up and open the door. We can be seen congregating outside of the room 366. When we enter the room, we greet, we eat, and we watch anime!. Besides the wonderful joys of watching shows that expand my limited experience in the knowledge of Asian cartoons, I learn more every day from the members at anime club then I feel they learn from me. Of course, I am one of the leaders of the club, so I am required to learn something about them!

I work at a Pediatrics office every summer. Now, you would think that people would have some type of common sense about what to do and what not to do when they walk into a doctor’s office. One time, we had twins come in with their mother for their physical. However, it wasn’t just them three. The mother had also brought along two friends. One of her “friends” brought a pitbull into our office. Frankly, we weren’t really sure if they were a man or woman. My co-worker asked said, “Ma’am, you can’t have that dog in here”. I think we might have offended her by calling her ma’am because she then responded by saying that she had been waiting for an hour when in fact they had only signed in 15 minutes ago. But in all seriousness, who brings a dog to a doctor’s office?

Our spinning talent is probably the only thing that unites us. The St. Marks color guard is made up of eight, diverse young ladies. Our team is made up of four seniors, three juniors, and one frosh. Though we are all very different, no one can see our differences on the field. The crowd can not tell who gets an A in chemistry or who has already gotten four demerits this year. All they focus on is our performance. The crowd doesn't notice that that girl who's in National Honor Society is off. They see that girl on the right is not matched up with everyone else. Color guard doesn't make us judged as individuals, it allows the audience to judge us as a group, as a team, and as a part of St. Mark's Marching Band.

f) I had a summer job at Grottos Grand Slam down in Lewes, DE. Some times I worked the TakeOut counter; i was not good at it. I was a way better bus boy. What made counter interesting was the number of people that walked in and didn't realize there was a restaurant on the other side of the building. Or they walked in looked around and walked out. My co-workers and i used to have bets on who was going to walk out or not. The way you knew was if they walked with a purpose or not. The reason this was annoying was that there was a huge takeout sign above the door. Some people would walk in and say, "oh, I thought this was a restaurant." thats when we said, "around to the side."

Before this year, I really didn't do that many extra-curricular activities for St. Mark's. This year, I'm doing Cross-Country, Drama, Key Club, and Psychology Club. While they all have interesting and cool people, the ones I have come to know well are the ones on the Cross Country team. Even as a senior, coming onto a team where everyone has known each other for a long time can be a bit intimidating. I knew the guys who were seniors on the team, but I wouldn't exactly call any of us friends. What makes them interesting, however, is the fact that they are so welcoming. They're not exactly welcoming in the sense of giving you freshly baked cookies and a hug, but welcoming in the way that they're not going to exclude you just because they don't really know you. Everyone acts as a family, as most teams. We can be a bit snarky to each other at times, but it's all in good humor. No one is ever excluded from anything. There aren't any cliques, even on the varsity. Everyone just helps each other out, gives great moral support, and we all treat each other with the respect we deserve.

The Spirit Day Pep Rally is a natural but interesting setting for a fictional story. Pep Rally is taken place at the end of spirit week. Pep Rally is the time to show which class has the most school spirit. Everybody dresses up in the same color for color wars. People dye their hair and put face paint on and scream down the hallway. It is a once a year kind of event where kids can go crazy.

I was given the opportunity over the summer to work at Union Park Auto. It is an automobile company that provides service on used and new cars. You also can buy cars here. There are many values that you can learn from having a job. Some of these are being responsible and making your own money. My job requires a lot of physical labor. I hand wash the cars and detail them one by one. Some nights can were tough while others were not so much. When work was slow I used to sit in the waiting room and just read a whole bunch of magazines. When I wasn’t in the mood to read, I would play on my phone or just talk to my other friendly co-workers. These type of things kept be occupied until I was able to get off work.

There are many people at St. Marks that would make interesting fictional characters for a story or novel. The first I person I can think of is Anh Nguyen. I know him as a classmate and a close friend, and let me tell you this; he has a lot of personalities that you have to get use to. Sometimes he’s a comedian, a therapist, a trendsetter, and an athlete that will do anything to help his team win. Sophomore Anh almost had everyone saying Zamm Daddy, which he made up. But when he gets mad you better stay out of his way, because he has an extreme temper problem and when you think you guys are joking, Anh maybe ready to fight. Anh doesn’t care what people say or think of him which makes him unique because he’s his own person. Overall he’s a very likeable person and will make friends with people were ever he goes.

My very first job was refereeing for younger kids soccer games. I was in 8th grade and I took it pretty seriously. I would ref 4 games every weekend for the under 8-age group. My main job as a ref was to make sure everyone was safe, and to teach him or her about the game. The biggest game I had to ref was an 8v8 tournament, and it was about 15 games per ref, and each game was 40 minutes. I begged my mom to let me stay home, because I had just come home from a sleepover after my 8th grade semi-formal dance, I even tried to play the sick card, but all my efforts have failed. The next morning was a dreary rainy morning; I was tried, miserable, and just overall mad. I had to spend the whole day at the soccer fields. After my fifteenth game refereeing, I was packing up to go home, when the referee coordinator ran up to me and told me to ref the last championship game. I was not happy one bit. I ended up refereeing the game, and it was quite an exciting game. I got a bonus in my paycheck, which was a nice reward. After the tiring weekend, I decided to not ref for little kids anymore and quit the next weekend.

Working at Moe’s Southwest Grill tends to be a bit boring at times. Work all depends on when people come in for food. My coworkers, which includes Lauren Talley and I have come to a consensus that when we’re busy more people tend to pile in and when we’re bored with nothing to do, there isn’t a soul in sight. Protocol for working at Moe’s require all workers to say, “Welcome to Moe’s” whenever a potential customer walks through the doors. One day, I decided to change things up a bit. Instead of saying the usual greeting message, I chose to say, “Welcome to Chipotle!” Chipotle is another chain of Mexican grill restaurants who’s specialty is also burritos. As soon as the words came out of my mouth, the customer walked right back out to double check if she walked into the right restaurant. She then walked back in and was still confused until I cleared it up as a joke. Both parties laughed and I still have my job!

I work at Rita's Italian Water Ice in Bear, Delaware. There are some very interesting people that come up to the window. When I first applied there I had no idea what I was getting myself into. About a couple of weeks ago, I was working the Friday night shift. This is my least favorite shift. All sorts of weird people come up since it's in an area that does not have a particularly good reputation. It's nearing fall so business is pretty slow. My co-workers and I pass the time staring out the window at the activity going on in the shopping center. Sometimes it is pretty interesting. This night in particular we witnessed a robbery. We watched a man break into someone's trunk and rip out the stereo. We called the police and they didn't show up for an hour. The car belonged to one of our friends next door at Nino's. There was nothing that could be done.

Over the summer I worked at Grotto's Pizza Restaurant down in Bethany Beach. To pass the time we performed many activities when we weren't busy. The most interesting thing we did was have a water gun fight. A few co-workers had randomly brought squirt guns into work and thought it would be funny to shoot people with water when business was slow. They hid behind walls and shot people and ran so no one knew who was shooting people at first. Eventually, they left a gun in the open so I took it and shot the guys who brought it into work. It was a fun time to keep us busy when we were extremely bored. On a hot day, having a squirt gun fight in the middle of the day at work was the best way to pass the time when we had nothing to do.

An interesting setting for a story would be the Spirit Day Pep Rally. In the story you could talk about all the interesting people and how all of them are different. You could talk about the competition and the spirit that you can feel in the air. Also it would be a good setting because there are so many things going on that you could write about. There is a never a dull moment. For some people, the pep rally may even be the highlight of their entire senior (or junior) year.

I have a summer job at the Wilmington Country Club. There are polite and courteous clients and there are those clients that make you shudder and roll your eyes as soon as they walk in the door. One of our "favorite" clients, is a forty year old woman. She has two sons one is three and one is two. These are the type of customers that are not courteous. On one occasion, her three year old son walked into the club, made a Slurpee, and splattered it all over the entire cafe. On another occasion, her two year old son walked into the cafe and peed on the floor. Instead of helping clean up, his mother said "You'll clean that up right?" and proceeded to walk out the door with her head held high. Another duty we have is to set up for summer camps. We gave them Popsicle and one of the younger girls looked at me, mushed her Popsicle into the ground, and laughed and ran away. Then, a bee hive seemed to travel to the mess and I was still forced to clean it up. Working at the Wilmington Country club although beautiful, is not always filled with beautiful people.

Part A 1) When I'm not busy at work i do several things to pass the time. In order to help out my coworkers and boss i help organize and clean around the restaurant. I help clean by sweeping floors and wiping tables. I help organize by wrapping the silverware and folding table cloths. If i really wanted to i could just sit around and be on my phone but i would like to be on my bosses good side, so i can get a salary raise. I respect the people i work with and i wouldn't want them upset with me so i never slack off. I would hate if i had to do extra work because one of my coworkers is lazy so i make sure I'm always on my game. I've learned that in order to make more money i need to go the extra mile and thats my work ethic at work.

Spirit Day Pep Rally is something that many schools celebrate before their homecoming weekend. Saint Marks is a little bit different in this tradition, however. As a freshman you don’t really know what your expected to do and how you’re expected to act. This year my sister is a freshman and, though I didn’t want to give too much away, I wanted to let her in on how crazy it really gets, and how spirit filled Saint Marks really is. I made sure to tell her, thought, that this years senior class has incredible unity and works together as a team in all situations. She was very nervous for the pep rally because she heard that the seniors are so crazy, and as a freshmen, I remember how intimidating the seniors were. I tried to comfort her and tell her that its all for fun, but once she becomes a senior she will understand why we are all so excited and hyped up for our last pep rally at Saint Marks.

Part A. Letter C. For the past three summers, I have been a lifeguard at North Star Pool. As a lifeguard, I am one of two staff working at the pool, which makes me the head of authority. I get asked many questions, deal with injuries, and anything else that someone may need help with. As a lifeguard, it is my job to reprimand people when they are doing something dangerous in the pool area. Sometimes I have to deal with not only kids, but their parents. I find it hard to tell an adult what they are doing wrong. I could easily turn this type of situation into a story. One day a little boy jumped in the deep end with his swimmies on. This is not allowed because you need to be able to swim in the deep end without any assistance. I went over to the little boy, bent down to his level, and told him to swim towards the shallow end. He did as I said. A couple minutes later I saw this big man marching over to my lifeguard stand. He started yelling at me for telling his son what to do. My manager quickly got involved and cleared up the situation but things like this happen all the time. Everyday at work something interesting happens. I could easily write a short story about one of my many experiences at wok.

An interesting setting for a story would be Saint Mark's Junior prom. This would be an interesting story, talking about how dressed up everyone gets and how much time is up into getting ready. One could talk about their experience at the prom, getting ready, during prom, and after prom. You could also talk about all the decorations and time that the moderators put into the prom in order to make prom good time. Everyone always looks forward to prom for a good place to be with their friends. Everyone is in a happy environment and looks forward to this event all year long. Although Junior prom was so much much, everyone also looks forward to senior prom.

While attending Saint Marks it has been unusual for anything out of the ordinary to happen. Most of the time everyday is very similar and the same things tend to happen. I can remember one f the few times something “exciting” happened and that is when the students rebelled last year. It all started on Twitter when people began gossiping about rumors of certain teachers being fired. One of those teachers was Mr. Ogden. Everyone loved Mr. Ogden and when they found out about him being let go all havoc let loose. Everyone planned a rebellion on a specific day, they planned to leave homeroom and go outside until they promised to keep Mr. Ogden as a staff member. Per usual when it comes to rumors, the teachers heard about the rebellion and made announcements warning the students about the consequences if they were to rebel. Everyone heard the announcements but decided to try it anyway, this just turned into chaos and chanting in the hallways. The rebellion lasted about ten minutes and then slowly returned to classes. I think this scenario that happened here at Saint Marks could definitely be the basis for a short story. Everyone loves to read about excitement and positive things, people also love to read about people standing up for a cause or, or a person in this case, that they truly believe in.

I think that Dr. Schaff would make a good fictional character for a story or novel. He has easily described features and a distinct walk. He’s the stereotypical science teacher who is a stickler on the rules of the school. When a student asks him a question he is legendary for answering with another rhetorical question. When any student see’s him in the hallway they immediately straighten up and get into dress code. Every student fears his wrath. So I just think his legend could be put into a comedic or ironic story if it was written well.

When I am not busy at work I fold fabric. There are hundreds of fabrics at my work. Every pattern, color, shape size and not one of them is the same. There is no such thing as red, blue or purple. Instead its Cyan, Lavender, and cardinal. I mix and match different fabrics putting one on top of the other trying to decide what would be a good match for the shirt. Sometimes you can predict what a person is like by the type of fabric you use. Some people get a fabric called "Primary Cats" which in my opinion is the creepiest fabric. Its black with rainbow colored cats and the cats are all smiling. Whenever someone gets this fabric I assume they are a lonely old cat lady trying to remember to smile. When someone gets any of the floral fabrics I assume they are happy and creative. I could think of a story for every combination people get. It passes the time and helps me remember all the different fabrics for when people order them.

I work at an ice cream shop on the boardwalk at Bethany Beach. Since I work at the beach, our business is solely related to what the weather is like. Even though it may be more slow on a rainy day or night, it could just as easily be slow on a nice day or night. I find myself extremely bored at work when it's a slow day. The worst part about it is I'm surrounded by about fifty different flavors of ice cream, and like many people, i find myself eating whenever I'm bored. Other than eating ice cream, I try to do whatever I can to keep me from going insane. I'll pick up a dish rag and start cleaning the store until it's clean, try to read anything I can get my hands on, but my favorite thing to do is people watch on the boardwalk. You can see many different things on the boardwalk: families, friends, funny people, scary people, attractive people, and people that you cant help but feel sorry for. Needless to say, when I'm bored I can find numerous things to do to keep me busy.

Throughout St. Mark’s High School there are many different types of characters running through the maze of hallways. Beyond these halls during hours from 8:10 through 2:41, there are other groups of people who intervene even though they have many different personalities. I belong to the cheerleading team here at St. Mark’s, despite the stereotypes about cheerleaders, the team is composed of many different types of people. On the team it is easy to differentiate the different personality types. It is very obvious who the loud, obnoxious, and overly charismatic people are on the team. They make a statement as soon as they walk into a room, and every one knows that they are there. Next there is the types of people who one would not expect to be a cheerleader, these girls do not fit the description depicted on the TV’s about how high school cheerleaders act. These girls are probably the nicest and most caring girls I know, and even though they do not look like the typical cheerleader, they are an extremely positive addition to the team. Other than these types of girls, many other girls have combinations of the personalities. However hard it may seem, we make it work, we mesh together and become one family.

An event that occurred at St.Mark's that could be the basis for a short story was the riot that occurred last year. After all of the students found out that their favorite guidance counselor, Mr.Ogden, was not getting his contract renewed all of the students decided to start a protest to show how they felt about the decision. The night before the big protest my entire twitter feed was completely filled with students talking about the rebellion that was occurring the next day. The plan was to run to the football field and to sit on the lawn before homeroom. The students were not going to go to class until their voice was heard. Once we all got to school the next day, announcements came over the sound system informing us that the administrative body had found out what the students had planned and they did not support it at all. We were told that anyone that was to go out to the field would receive a detention for after school that day. The announcement did not intimidate everyone, however. There was still a majority of the student body that ran down the hallways protesting. Even though the students' voice was heard, the decision regarding Mr. Ogden did not change.

I currently work at Hollister in the Concord Mall. It has only been about three weeks since I started working there. Most of the time, people always think of Hollister as “that dark store with the loud music,” but I work in the stock room in the back. I pretty much spend my time folding clothes the entire time but there are also many fun things to do when I am not busy. There are about twelve giant shelving systems that move along the ground on a track to be able to get to every style of clothing they have at the store. Part of my job is to retrieve clothes from these shelves to fold and put into the store. Sometimes if there is nothing to do at work my coworkers and I climb the shelves all the way to the top shelf, which is about eight feet high. Then while I am lying on the top shelf, my coworkers will move the ginormous shelves back and forth. It is a silly thing to do but it really does help pass the time. Another thing that has happened at work is a card fight. Each employee has their own employee card that is the same size and material as a credit card. All of the sudden while I was sitting down things started flying at me and I realized someone I worked with found a stack of unused cards and started throwing them at me. I ran around climbing the shelves and hiding while using the folding boards to block them from hitting me. (The folding boards are different size boards we have to use to fold things.) My job can be quite fun at times because there are many things to do to pass time.

I work at Woodside Farm Creamery in the summer and during the school year while we are in season. There is a costumer that I along with everyone that I work with recognize. This costumer is a guy in his early twenties who is a delivery boy for Two Cousins pizza in Hockessin. He comes into the creamery quite frequently and always orders the same thing. "Butter brickle in a waffle cone with an extra scoop on top." When he walks through the doors, we know what to get before he opens his mouth. We have come to know and calm him Butter Brickle Boy due to his ice cream "tendencies." In addition to him, we have quite a few costumers of Asian decent because there is an Oriental Heritage Center right across the street from our farm. After any event that is being put on at the Center, we become flooded by the attendees. These are two customers that we have come to know and love.

I work at a water park called Jungle Jim’s Adventure World at Rehoboth Beach Delaware as a lifeguard. There are slow days and busy days. When there’s a slow day it is so much fun! All the lifeguards at the park become good friends over the summer. It depends on where you are assigned to work in the park for the day but the best place to be on a slow day would have to be on the tower. The tower is where all the big water ride are and you just push buttons all day long. When it’s slow we walk on the conveyor and pretend like it is a treadmill. We also just sit in the tubes and take naps or hang out. There are foreigners that work there also so sometimes we just talk to them and they try to teach us heir language. We are all a close knit group so on a slow day its fun to just talk to our co-workers. I’ve worked there for two years now so I know everyone that works there and the bosses are fun too. One day we even had a pushup contest on a break between my friend Taylor and I. we have some fun times at The Jungle.

Bd) The students at my lunch are like animals at a watering hole on the African Plane. Every student attacks the cafeteria as if it's the last "water" they'll ever see. Once everyone arrives at the table and scarfs down their purchased food, there are screeches of gossip and jokes, and others either roaring like lions or cackling like hyenas. There is often bickering between the animals. This may be because like anyone, you aren't yourself when you are hungry. Every single day, Mr Magurl or Mrs. Brown comes over and sends one of us to the deans office to shave our "manes." there always has to be an alpha male to every watering hole and the amount of trash-talking and flaunting to impress the females is always apparent. We may walk on two feet instead of four, but you may not be able to tell the difference between a watering hole and my lunch table

A great setting for a story would be the football team's last game last year. St. Marks was playing Sallies at Baynard stadium. The score was 17 to 7 and the fourth quarter was winding down. Sallies had the ball with about two minutes left. It seemed as if all hope was lost. Then, there was an interception, and we scored. Then on the kick off we forced a fumble and recovered it, and drove down the field once more to seal the deal. After the game, as we were leaving, blasting "We Are the Champions" over the radio, the entire sallies football team walked right in front of the truck.

Part Af: Working at McDonald’s is an interesting job that lets you interact with some incredibly interesting people. These people can also be extremely similar to each other. Everyday I see three different groups of customers, but I’ll focus on the nice patrons here. The ones you may not necessarily remember but always brighten your day are the nice customers. These people don’t all look the same but they all act like they’ve had a great day. The tough looking guy in the ‘wife beater’ and tattoo’s will come in and call you bro and thank you many times before he leaves. The nice lady arrives and greets you and has a genuine conversation with you while she waits for her food. That guy that always smells of fertilizer and manure always apologizes for his stench even when he comes through the drive-thru. These people brighten your day, make you appreciate the kindness from others, and help you push through the sometimes-busy workday.

The past few years I have worked at Barbizon Modeling Agency. I originally went there to learn to speak in public and learn new things. As time went on I was asked to work there as an assistant teacher to young children. I accepted but on my first day I was extremely scared when I met my boss. As I went into her office the door creaked as if I was entering a haunted house. I sat down in front of her plush chair as she slowly turned around. The first thing I thought of when she turned around was, "Where are the 101 Dalmatians?" That's right, Cruella Devil staring me straight in the eyes. She wore a white fur, that hugged her neck incredibly tight. She spoke in an extremely intimidating voice that made me even more scared than I was when I first walked in. In my experiences at Barbizon, I did not enjoy working for her and no longer do.

Over the past summer, I worked at community pools around Newark, Delaware as a lifeguard. The pools were almost always busy and demanded much attention to the people in the pool and their safety. At these pools there are two assigned lifeguards for each shift. We alternate every half hour, giving each of us a half hour every hour to do what we want or any extra responsibilities we had like cleaning bathrooms. Lifeguards are assigned to all the keep up on the pool along with the supervision of the lives of the people in the pool. But if I am finished every extra responsibility, I took that half hour to read my summer reading to books to pass the time. This was different because I came to realize that I was getting paid to do and finish my summer reading books during my lifeguarding shift. It is very important to stay busy lifeguarding to pass the time because many lifeguards like me, work long shifts of up to eight or nine hours during the day.

All of them are from California so as you can imagine they are relatively laid back. I always found them a tad odd in certain ways but what surprised me the most was when I found out everyone I work with is a Scientologist. I didn't have a problem with this, I just thought it was hilarious that all the time I worked there, I had no idea that I was working with people that belong to the Church of Scientology. I had never met a Scientologist so this struck me as interesting.

Kaleigh never fails to make people laugh and she would be the "funny" character of any novel. She has always been interesting in her choice of words and the way she acts. I think readers would find Kaleigh funny and enjoy reading about her. She would be found in a book about happiness with a happy ending.

I am not very fond of the older kids, they always whine and complain about every activity and are so boring and grumpy in the mornings. Basically all I do is sit in a room and watch people take safety tests, make sure they pass them, and then print their badges for them. Sometimes there is times where I won't have anyone taking a test for an hour or two. During that free time I go around and ask people if they need anything. If they don't need anything then I will take a couple snack breaks, read my summer reading or just talk to people while they do their work. I like working there because it is laid back but it is also a very successful business so everyone really likes to work there.

In the summer I'm a life guard at a neighborhood pool. There's always a lot of rainy days where without something to entertain ourselves with, we get really bored. If its really thundering and lightening then we stay indoors and play games like catch phrase or monopoly. If it's just raining and we're able to get in the pool we do more fun things. We play what we call "wipeout." we get all the tubes and rafts from the lost and found and put them in the pool. We see who can run the fastest across the rafts or stay standing the longest. We stack the rafts and jump off the diving board on to them and jump off the guard stand. One of my coworkers used one of the umbrellas from a table and jumped off the diving board like Mary Poppins. Ultimately, the umbrella broke so we didn't try that again; but it was fun while it lasted. Life guarding can often be quite slow or boring so these games and fun help pass the time.

An interesting setting for a story would be the welcome dance. Every year in the beginning of the year there is a welcome dance for the students to go to dance and have a good time. Everyone gets dressed up according to the theme which this year was blast for the past. Students form groups and come up with unique ideas that go along with the theme. For instance a group of girls dressed up as the spice girls and won the costume contest. This event is highly liked by the student body and everyone looks forward to it. The teachers put time in to monitor the dance. This dance also starts off the year. If this was made into a story you could talk about the process of making the costume and then the dance itself. You could also explain how they make awesome decorations to go along with it.

Eventually it grew on me and I really enjoy it now. What makes me enjoy it is the people I work with. My coworkers are real characters. Some of them are boring yes but most are down right great. One of my most favorite coworkers is a man named Josh. He has been working there for four years or so now. He stated out as a cashier and is now a manager there. He’s so quick and sarcastically funny, I just love it. About a month ago I answered a call coming into the store phone. It was hard to hear so I passed it off to another manager Mike. He had a hard time hearing it as well but after a minute or two he asked “Are you asking for Josh?” he then handed the phone to Josh and within seconds Josh dropped the phone and ran franticly into the back of the store. He came back out within a minute, crying and sprinting out of the store. He was gone for quite some time when Mike told us then Josh’s cousin had been shot in the head and was in critical condition. We all felt for josh, everyone, from the kids just starting to the people who have been there from the beginning. Josh’s cousin died within the night. We all mourn his cousin.

Kumon, a learning center for students, is an interesting place to work. Usually, the children I instruct come in whenever they would like to giving me free time at certain times.Usually during this free time, I fix the folders and the plans of the Kumon students, but when I have free time and I don't have work that I have to prioritize, what I do usually is go to the back of the center. The back of this center is filled with packets and papers needed for the children and computers so we could enter in all their work.I usually end up hiding in that back room and talk to the employees there and sometimes check my phone for missed calls or unanswered text messages. Although, I always bring a student's folder to the back so if ever my boss walks in, it looks like I'm doing something productive. In reality though, I'm just relaxing and catching up with my coworkers.

Part B: Letter C- For the past four years I have sat at the same lunch table with the same group of people. Though over the years some kids have left and some new friends replaced them. Though overall the table has remained the same, and so have the conversations. Everyday we all sit down and the same table hoping to get a good seat. If you are late to the lunch you may be tempted to move someone else's bag and seat so that you are not stuck at the lonesome end of the table. Once everyone has their lunch we all sit down and begin, what seems to be the same, conversation. No matter the beginning of the conversation, it will eventually lead to a hysterical and hypothetical story. While laughing you may find yourself guarding your lunch so nobody attempts to steal it. Though we may all seem to be mean to each other in a way, we always seem to have fun just talking and hanging out at our traditional lunch table.

This past summer I worked as a lifeguard and was promoted to shift manager. One of the other lifeguards I was working with that day thought it would be okay to drink while on duty. Once I became aware of this I had no choice but to inform our head manager. I am really glad I made this decision in hindsight, because later that day a toddler fell into the pool. It was necessary for the replacement guard to jump in and save the child. If the original guard were on duty, I am unsure if he would have been able to effectively save the child.

The DRM I usually work with is a woman who’s name is Doris. Doris is a very happy, energetic, and lively middle-aged woman. She is always available to help you with anything you need and give you advice and guidance. My favorite part about Doris is her accent, she has such a southern twang to her you can’t help but smile whenever she opens her mouth. I have never heard her use profanity when something happens, only funny words like “fiddlesticks” and telling me that certain difficult residents will keep her from meeting St. Peter when she dies I can never stay bored or upset when she works and I feel honored that I have had the opportunity to meet such a kind, funny, and truly caring woman.

Whenever business gets slow at Rita's we usually sit around doing nothing. However sometimes we clean, other times we play cards. But most of the time we complain. We complain about having to work on a rainy day or how our lives suck. It just seems like a common thing to do, complain. I usually complain about how hungry I am, which gets my co-worker, Steve, really agitated. He usually tells me to shut up and order something which by now he knows I'll never do, as he knows I'll never shut up. I really like my job and I love when it's super busy and everyone is moving around. But since the fall season started it hasn't been like that for awhile. I do like the slow days as well because that's when I get to really know my other co-workers. So yeah, that's what we usually do on slow days. We talk, eat and play games.

An interesting day for St. Marks High School would have to be the St. Marks spirit pep rally day especially for the seniors. Almost every senior participates and everyone is crazy and fun. The entire day is dedicated to being obnoxious and full of energy and spirit. Everyone is cheerful and happy. Especially our senior class, we are very spirited and enthusiastic. With it being the senior's last year, it is our job to show the juniors, sophomores, and freshmen what it takes to be a spartan and win the spirit stick.

A place at St. Mark’s that would be a natural but also interesting setting for a story would be the Spirit Day Pep Rally. During the pep rally, everyone in the gym is always very excited. There is so much yelling and cheering going on you can barely even “hear yourself think.” I think this would be an interesting setting because the excitement would almost definitely make a reader interested and want to keep reading. At the end of the pep rally, every student is anxious and waiting to find out which class will win the Spirit Stick. This type of suspense would make the reader want to find out which class wins and it would increase the feeling of suspense for the reader as well. Another reason that this would be an interesting setting is, regardless of who wins the Spirit Stick, there is usually a happy ending because every class has fun just being a part of the Spirit Day Pep Rally.

One event at St Marks that could be the setting of a story is Spirit Week and the pep rally. Spirit Week the story would chronicle the daily events and dress downs, culminating in the special Spirit Day and pep rally on Friday. Spirit Day is the best day of Spirit Week because it is the day on which the students have the most school and class spirit. The story of Spirit Week would narrate hour by hour each day of the week and take the reader through the pep rally in detailed description so that the reader felt like they were sitting in the gym with the rest of the student body. The pep rally starts with the classes running in to the gym and with introductions of each sport team. Each class then sings their class song and cheer. Finally at the end of the rally, Ms. Taylor announces the winner of the coveted Spirit Stick. Most years, the seniors win, but there is always a chance for an upset. Spirit Week is the most fun week of the school year. A story about this week would show a great and exciting part of the many St Marks traditions.

She talked down to all of the newly hired. Besides yelling at us in front of customers, what irked me most was her lack of handing out paychecks. I began to dread going to the work, I truly could not stand her. One day in August after I had finished my shift for the week, I found comfort in knowing I would not have to work for her much longer. The next evening, my boss had sent me a voicemail saying I was supposed be at work at that moment. I knew she was lying, calling two hours into my "shift." I called her back, and politely hinted that she I knew she was lying, because it was not on the schedule and stated two simple words gave me the greatest relief, “I resign.”

Senior Day Pep Rally wold be a great setting for a story considering all the things that go on during the day. This is one day that we will all remember for the rest of our lives, and that is why it is so special. Stories from today will be remember by many of us forever and i feel that this is a day where anything can happen. We all show our true school spirit and get very involved as a class, coming together to beat the juniors! This is what makes this a natural setting for stories and why it would be interesting. Anything can happen during pep rally and that's the fun of it, making it a perfect setting for the basis of many stories.

I reacted by saying "oh thats funny, they call you daddy. However, I did not even realize that it was dad cross dressed as a mom. The dad then grunted to me "thats because I am there dad", and then stormed out to never be seen again in the hardware store. This was one of the awkward moments I had working this summer.

To be honest, schools really are not that fascinating. Boring colors, drab scenery, and dull architecture make up the bulk of the building. However, that is only what you see. Underneath this seemingly everyday appearance is a network of tunnels and rooms. One interesting place at St. Marks is the theater, which contains multiple underground rooms. A great way this could be used as a story is during a disaster of some kind, a few students take refuge in the rooms and emerge to a changed world.

A place at Saint Mark's that would be an interesting setting for a story is the cafeteria. The reason I say this is because of all the different groups of people who together in one room. There are so many different conversations and things going on all at once. There could be something out of the ordinary happen, and you could show all of the different perspectives of that one event. Also the cafeteria seems to be the place where some of the more interesting things seem to occur in the school. That is why I would choose the cafeteria as the setting for a story in Saint Marks.

I like to take time to work out at the YMCA to get my mind off of stressful things going on in my life. I believe that dance and thorough workouts are the best way to get my mind off of things. Overall, I use my down time to spend time at home to catch up with my family and happenings in their life, and doing little things to satisfy myself.

Every single person has unique experiences throughout their entire lives that ultimately enable people to discover their true personality. Last year's pep rally, for example, was one, however, that emphasized my own personality. When we defeated the seniors last year in pep rally, every peer in my class acted like a bunch of 5 year old children, not even being aware of their inappropriate behavior. Then, in direct retaliation, the seniors took what was just a fire in the microwave and added gasoline to it through their own act of handling my class's wrongful way of expressing their emotions. In all of the chaos that ensued in last year's pep rally, I stayed calm and humble, not throwing things at the seniors or shoving people out of my path to touch the spirit stick. I felt horrible about this whole situation and so called "battle" that ensued in this pep rally. My point is, this pep rally only showed people what I truly stand for as a person: embodying humility and upholding integrity.

When I use to work at Walgreens, everyday many people would walk in that I did not recognize. However, there were few people that would come in every day and buy the same thing. I would stand behind the register and ring up people’s order, it was very monotonous. However one day in December, a man approached the front counter while I was working. He approached me, filled with rage and impatience. He slammed a receipt down on the counter and exclaimed, “I need a return! I am so sick of all this Christmas stuff!” Standing there stunned and not knowing what to do since it was only my third month of working, I called for my manager. My manager approached the man asking what she could do for the angry customer. Once again, the angry man yelled, “I need a refund!” followed by numerous curses. My manager seemed calm and collected, while I was fearful for my life. My manager asked for the receipt in the man’s hands, so that she could complete his request. The man just stood there demanding his money back, still holding the receipt. My manager once again calmly asked for the receipt, but he just refused and started calling her names. My manager replied,” Sir I am sorry but in order to get your transaction back, I need your receipt.” The man then cursed at my manager saying that he wished she would die, and how he will never use Walgreens again. As soon as he stormed out of the store, all the customers in the store and employees felt like they could breathe again. Later that day after everyone had calmed down a bit, I asked my manager if she was alright first of all, an why the man wouldn’t give her the receipt. She then told me that she was fine and it was not the first time something that that had happened. She saw the man had an old receipt and was hoping that she would just give him the $200 return without showing the real receipt; basically he wanted a free $200.

a.) From about 1-4 oclock Pat’s Pizza is usually slow, so I have to find something to do to keep me from going crazy. The cooks in the back will usually yell “Sidework!” and make a list of appetizers and bottles that need refilling and tape it to the table in the back. I grab my iPod and put on music so I’m somewhat entertained while weighing and bagging all types of appetizers like french fries, wings, and onion rings. I am so used to doing this task I know all the amounts that go into each appetizer off the top of my head. If there is leftover amounts of food, I will usually cook it up and eat it. It does not help that I get free food here, because when I’m bored I will just make some unhealthy food to snack on. When I’m done that, I’ll usually do homework. My boss told us that we are not allowed to do homework at work so I have to be sneaky and hide my books under the counter where the cameras cannot see. If he stops by, I have to quickly wrap everything up and put it away before he sees. This has happened plenty of times before, and now all my co-workers usually look out for one another and warn everyone when we see him pull up.

The cafeteria is one of the most interesting places in St. Mark's. The mix of people from different groups of friends and backgrounds makes for an interesting combination in one room. The chaotic nature of the lunch room would be something very interesting to write about. The room is almost like a maze trying to get some food and running into so many different people you usually do not see during the day. Its so much fun to be in the mix but occasionally it gets kind of annoying. I could definitely see the St. Mark's cafeteria line as a back drop for a really bad day of school where the character just cant find any food or when they do, they get run into by those annoying freshmen and their lunch ends up on the floor.

Jobs are a pretty sore subject for me. I haven’t really ever had a real job with a weekly paycheck and when I try to apply anywhere I never get the job. However the closest thing I have come to any kind of job is babysitting. I used to babysit for my Aunt and Uncle all the time until well I got fired. One night I was babysitting my two little cousins; both girls, one five and one three. As I was talking to the older one, Jenna the littlest one was screaming, “I never ever fall!!” while jumping on and off the couches and in the matter of 2 seconds she was on the hardwood floor gasping for the biggest breath of air ready to belt out the loudest scream I think I’ve ever heard a little kid cry to this date. Needless to say I was fired from that babysitting job. But on the bright side they are family, so hopefully I can work my way back to babysitting for them again.

Part B (B)

A scene from St. Mark's that could make a great tale to tell is the night St. Mark's won the State Championship in football and locked down their undefeated ("perfect") record. I remember the night vividly. I had seats right alongside the 50 yard line, so I saw pretty much every snap from a fairly close distance. The night was one I'll never forget. The feeling of knowing that your school has won the State Championship for the first time since 1978 and watching the team jumping up in down in a celebratory mood was something I will never for as long as I live forget. Middletown, the team the Spartans played that night, were clearly expecting an easy win (judging by the swagger and bravado of the players on the sideline), but this was not the case. A 12-0 "perfect" season is an ideal story, one that would truly exemplify what it means to have Spartan pride.

I work for American Hockey services (AHS) and the clients I work with are all under the age of fourteen. With my job you’re never with the kids long enough to actually learn all their names so you do what comes naturally and call them how you see them. The last camp I worked for AHS every kid had a nickname except for the two Astor’s because who would forget a name like Astor. One of my favorite kids that week was a ten year old that I called Tony the Tiger. I called him that cause to me he looked like a tiger with a blonde mane on his head, sharp looking teeth, and enough energy to take a gazelle down. With my job we get a handful of kids that return and expect me to remember them, which I do, just not by their real name. They will always be remembered by me by the nickname I created to remember them.

Ever since I turned fifteen I have had a job. I have had a few jobs and I have loved them all. I currently work at a tanning salon called Self Indulgence. Usually during prom season we are always busy and never have a minute to spare. Lately since the seasons are changing and it's getting closer to winter it is not as busy. Nowadays I'll be lucky if I have even twnety customers come in during my six hour shift. During the summer this was very boring because I had nothing to occupy my time other then the television. As much as I love TV it gets old after watching it for six hours. But ever since school started to pass the time at work I usually do my homework. I'm glad that it is not busy all the time because I get distracted very easily while doing my homework but since I am at work I have nothing better to do. I probably would get in trouble with my boss if I told her I was watching TV or doing homework, so shh don't say anything!
