Senior Purple Class Vocab Homework






















1. Choose any ten (10) vocabulary words from the list below and write sentences using them correctly in context and giving clues to their meanings.

2. Post your sentences as comments on Schoolsville using your first name, last initial, and section color to identify yourself.

I hope to make up your vocabulary test (on Tuesday, Sept. 27) using sentences from the three senior sections.

Here's the list:

Antebellum—before the war
Antithesis--opposition; contrast: the antithesis of right and wrong.
Autocratic—rule by a single person, dictatorship
Benefactor--a person who confers a benefit; kindly helper.
Asynchronous--not occurring at the same time.
Circumlocution—talking in circles; roundabout speaking

1. My grandmother is a benefactor to our church because donates money each week.
2. After meeting with the dean, the verdict was a three-day suspension.
3. The bad reviews online dissuaded me from buying the new camera.
4. Over the past week, the weather has fluctuated from high 80s to low 60s.
5. I went to the doctor in seek of medicine to cure my malady.
6. The detour we encountered on the way to the beach diverted us from our normal route, making our drive an extra two hours.
7. On Friday, the student body will convene in the gym for the pep rally.
8. In retrospect, an umbrella would have been a good idea for the rainy walk into school this morning.
9. The surgeon extracted the tumor with a steady hand that required a lot of concentration.
10. The medicine counteracted the effects of my headache and I was instantly feeling better.

The judge announced the verdict of the trial and the prisoner was escorted to jail.
I had to dissuade my parents from grounding me.
I live in the middle of my two best friends houses, so they're both equidistant from my house.
I had to extract the bad sentence from my paper.
I hate it when my grades fluctuate in stead of being consistent.
I frequently come down with a malady on test days.
Freshmen are such neophytes.
I always get lost when I drive, and I must divert my car.
Teenagers always talk hyperbolic.
The team convened to make a plan for the next game.

When my sister doesn't know what she is talking about, she talks in circumlocution.

The judge gave the verdict on the trial which was guilty.

My house and Annie's house are equidistant to the pool.

I tried to extract the story from her but she kept her lips sealed.

My brother always exaggerates his malady to some harmful and deadly disease.

In retrospect, I probably wouldn't have jumped off the bridge if I had known I would break my leg.

I tried to divert my moms attention away from my report card by doing lots of chores.

I tried to dissuade Meghan from wearing the dress because it made her look fat.

Bob's malady kept him in the hostpital for months.
Contrary to popular belief, bears are omnivorous.
The smell of her perfume permeated through the air.
The plane was diverted and forced to land because of an emergency on board.

7. A foul smell of expired milk permeated the whole building.
8. Vegetable prices at the farmer’s market fluctuate according to the season.
9. The traffic will divert through the side streets while the main road is being resurfaced.

3. My dance teacher’s mood tends to fluctuate day by day so we never know what to expect.
4. My parents tried to dissuade me from taking the back roads because, even though they are a much faster route, they are not as safe as the main roads.

During the dance routine, one dance member was asynchronous with the other members and that cost them the trophy.
The car door was extracted by the fireman making an attempt to save the passenger before the car lit up into flames.
The ancient blade found inside a ship wreck was innocuous and couldn’t kill a fly.
The advanced ice skater got a cold just before the competition, but her neophyte performance still managed to win herself a bronze metal.
The man whom everyone was nervous around turned out to be a benefactor who volunteers to feed to homeless.
The bright lights that shined against the water fall fluctuated back and forth between red , blue, and green colors.
I have always questioned whether or not my dog is an omnivorous animal because she tends to eat everything I wouldn’t eat including her own body waste.
Although both routes to go to the store are equidistant, I can drive there faster taking one route because there are no stop lights.
If photographers could predict the intermittent pattern of lightening, they would probably have better pictures of lightening during a storm.
By the time the girl proved the rumor to be false, the terrible story about her had already permeated throughout the entire school.

2. The members of the school board had to convene to discuss some crucial decisions for the school year.
3. The man always is always trying to dissuade anyone from an idea that does not benefit him is some way.
4. I knew that if we left our houses at the same time we would arrive at the party together because our houses were equidistant from the place.
5. I wiped the sweat off my forehead and was completely relieved when I read that the substance I swallowed was innocuous.
